Defect SummaryVehicle description: mini vans equipped with integrated child seats. the shoulder harness restraint on the integrated child seat can become difficult to extract when the safety belt latch plate becomes contaminated.
Consequence SummaryThis can cause difficulty in releasing a child from the restraint.
Corrective SummaryDealers will clean the latch mechanism. an extender will be added to the emergency release anchor for the child seat safety belts so that the release clips are more visible and accessible to the operator in the event that the retractor mechanism can not be unlocked. in addition, an instructional owner's manual supplement card will be provided.
NotesOwner notification is expected to begin november 30, 1998.owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact chrysler at 1-800-992-1997.also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236).

 Child was in integrated child seat and seat would unbuckle, but the straps would not retract so child could get out of seat. this has happened twice. took vehicle to dealer, and dealer indicated a cable and/or internal parts have broken. *ak

 Seat belt keeps retracting, and consumer had to get a knife to cut belt because it would not retract. there is a recall on the intergrated child seat on these vehicles, and consumer is having the same problem. *ak

 The child belt retrector catches child's hair, and pulls it into the spool for the seat belt, causing hair to get stuck in spool, causing pain to child.

 Integrated child seat wont retract when pulled out. weatherstripping on drivers door fell off found out the drivers door was not aligned properly. constant belt noise especially during wet conditions. dealer must repeatedly tighten them. brakes pulsate when applying them. replaced numerous components on rear brakes. fuel tank would not read fuel level correctly. dealer had to replace fuel tank, fuel pump, and other components and said the fuel tank was bowed. dual sliding doors have to be repeatedly adjusted because they become difficult to slide. driver's side window regulator broke for no apparent reason. right rear child safety seat had hole in the buckle. replaced battery once.installed child safety belt extensions due to recall. van is now back in shop for unknown problems, will not start.

 The built-in css latching mechanism would press up against the child's crotch area, causing the child to be in pain or claims to be hurting child. took vehicle to dealer to have mechanism extended. was refused due to federal regulations. *ak

 Consumer had recall # 98-v-185-000 repaired yesterday. the dealership added emergency release clips which helps to release them. but when pulling up over child's head the belt gets tighter on the child's chest, not completely releasing. *ak

 The child's safety deat does not accomodate a child under 3 years of age--the buckly mechanism is too close to the groin of the child, causing pain and discomfort. also, the latch mechanism often gets obstructed by food/crumbs and will not release.

 Retractor failed to operate when consumer wanted to remove child from the integrated child seat. belt would continually tighten . consumer had to cut the belt to remove her child. dealer notified and informed consumer that the parts have not arrived since 14-sep-98. mfr. notified, and continued to inform consumer that the parts would be in ; but no date could be given. part has finally been repaired. *ak *ml

 The police department had to cut the harness straps to get the child out of the intergrated css because the more one would try to get the child out of the intergated css, the more the harness straps would tighten up. *ak

 Consumer was driving 50 to 55 mph and the transmission locked up, causing the vehicle to stop instantly and the occupant was pushed in the the windshield. also abs brakes pulsated under heavier braking applications/child safety seat locked up, and it was nearly impossible to get 2-year old out/heater hose developed a hole and leaked/replaced power window fuse, and driveshaft broke, vehicle lost control, driver sustained injuries. *ak

 When the child is in the intergrated css the harness straps tighten up and is unable to unlatch. *ak consumer states that food debris was what was clogging up the area where the child safety seat buckles in and causes harness to tighten and not release, consumer feels this is a poor design for a safety feature designated for small children. *slc

 The harness straps on the child seat with the clip can not be adjusted. the clip rides too low on the child's stomach. the child can slip through the harness. will be taking vehicle to dealer to adjust the clip or harness straps. *ak

 Integrated child safety seat comes with no locking clip; when leaning forward, occupant's shoulders comes out of shoulder harness. tt the consumer had contacted the vehicle dealer and many other sources to find a solution to the child safety seats, but consumer couldn't. consumer concluded that either the seat was defective or installed it incorrectly. what ever the cause, the child's life was in danger. consumer also stated that the problem would be resolved if there was a harness tie clip that would keep the shoulder locked together. *yh
