 Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle would only go into reverse on two occasions. when the vehicle was turned off and restarted it worked properly. after the second incident the check engine light illuminated. the vehicle was towed to the dealership. they determined the codes needed to be reset. the vehicle performed properly for a short period of time and then it started having problems again. however, this time the transmission would not go into drive until the vehicle was restarted. the manufacturer has not been alerted.

 Transmission at 91,000 miles essentially exploded without warning. chysler refused to help me i also had to call them back to be informed of the denial. i asked for the name and number of the zone manager and was told i could only get that from the dealer. tom addis dodge refuse to identify the zone manager or give me his number. i was then informed the zone manager does not talk to customers, and unless i could produce reciepts for routine maintance from the previous owners (who i cannot identify) there was no discussion, eveb if i had that proof i was told due to the mileage there would be no assistance. i asked to see thier tsb's and the service manager refused to allow me access to them, stating she was concerned about my motive to read them.*ak

 As a precaution to other drivers.my 1996 dodge caravan 125000 miles,upon leaving a parking lot after a highway speed and city speed trip the vehicle would not move forward.a police officer waved me to stop.upon inspection of the passenger front tire we found the outer tie rod joint broke seperating at the ball socket causing the wheel to not move with the steering.by the grace of god it did not happen on the way with my family aboard.we were able the change the tie outer tie rod so we could return home.the other driver side outer tie rod was replaced the next day as a precaution.is there a recall about these tie rods? the replacement part from a aftermarket parts store appear heavy duty compared to the originals.the original part showed wear on the ball aswell as the socket.the repacement part has a grease fitting to lube the joint and the original does not.please contact me via e-mail if a recall exist or with questions.please inform the public to have these parts inspected before a problems occurs for them. thank you for listening and best regards /david derouen. *ak

 My transmission broke down on a highway no warning and i almost got kill, speeding cars behind me. my old trans in a 92 dodge caravan broke down 3 times and it cost me 9,000 and now my 96 dodge caravan the trans broke and i do nt want to pay thousands of dollars so i am planning to sew dodge for not warning on the trans problem and the new models re not better then the old, and i have proof that self destruct, in bad weathers or out of no where.*ak

 The transmission on my 1996 dodge caravan has failed again for the third time. it was replaced once in 1997 at 7,000 miles by chrysler. it was reconditioned in 2000 at 56,000 miles by chrysler. the most recent failure at 81,000 miles in december of 2002. chrysler refuses to acknowledge a problem with the transmission and refuses to perform any good will repairs.

 I have reviewed alot of websites and it seems there have been alot of transmission problems reported on this model of car. some could have led to accidents, while our car so far involves only transmission fluid leakeage and occasional noise. but, i am afraid this may be prelude to a full failure. it seems prudent to consider a general recall on the transmission since there seem to have been so many complaints posted on the internet. even our auto mechanic was well aware of the problem and suggested that we complain to the dealer and see if they would be nice enough to honor some type of compensation!*jb

 I have had to replace the transmission twice since i purchased it from the dealer. the first time was at around 45000 miles, and the second was around 55000 miles. i have the windshield wipers turning on and off by themselves, the horn stopped working and the air bag light went on. there is a loud wind noise under the car when you drive over 40 mph. the vehicle had approximately 29000 miles when we purchased it, and it has caused us grief ever since. we cannot trade it in, and get what its worth, because of these awful defects, nor do we want to put our children in jeopardy. i cannot drive out of my local area because i am afraid of the vehicle breaking down on the highway.*ak

 Airbag light came on and stayed on, no horn or cruise control. a few days later i read about chrysler minivans being investigated because of faulty clockspring assemblies. after reading that, i called our dealer and asked if there was a recall on it. none! this is definitely a safety issue. no airbag, no horn means dangerous driving conditions. we had to pay to have the part replaced. after reading through 96 complaints about this part on your website, i thought i would add my complaint. chrysler paid for our new transmission, but we had to pay labor. also paid for the new elect. for ac knob.*ak

 More than a dozen times this van will not start. dealership cannot locate problem, and usually it occurs from cold start, but has also occurred over 5 times while driving and this is not safe. also lost transmission sensor and that killed car while driving but has been replaced. chrysler is not helping and i am nervous driving my kids in this van. had it 2 years and have been stranded more than a dozen times. noticed others with similar unsafe situations and hope chrysler will address them soon.*ak

 I've started experiencing problems with my transmission about at 51,602 miles, the back-up lights were not operating when i was in reverse. the dealership notice that when i had my car in for service, they tried changing the lights with no success. then they realized there was a gap in the transmission, the technician was able to put his hand in the gap!! they pulled and replace valve body and seals. still, i was always telling my friends that my car was making strange noises with the transmission. around 72,000 miles i've started experiencing bigger change with my vehicle. it would not accelerate or change gear in second after i've pressed on the gas pedal, until it suddenly jumped to the third gear. very scary and annoying. i though it was weather related since it was in the middle of the winter in west virginia. after a while i've contacted my dealer in ansted they told me to have it check and deciced to replace the defective part. i was appaled since i have low mileage on my car, 74,000 miles. there is a long list of problems with my van, brakes pad and rotors, sway bar bushings, front struts( changed the first time at 12,000 miles) engine and a/c problems to name a few. i've been pretty patient with chrysler so far. i've called them this morning ref#8474912, to be told there is no such thing as a secret warranty, and since i was out of my warranty time frame i was regarded as less than a chrysler customer to my surprise. could you do anything for me please? thanks. *ak

 Transmission failed twice once at 38,000 miles and again 130,000 miles due to a harden pin that went into transmission , snapped off and failed. manufacturer used this hard pin instead of rolled type pin. consumer felt this was a safety defect because transmission failed without warning, and there were no replacement parts available.*ak consumer had taken vehicle to dealer due to putting it in park and it starting to roll, dealer stated everything was okay, however 7000 miles later transmisison failed, consumer went to put it in drive and there was a grinding noise, vehicle just stopped, transmission was replaced and 92000 miles later transmission failed again, consumer has had 3 of the same vehicles and they hav all experienced transmission failures, consumer is requesting reimbursement. *slc

 While driving at approximately 60mph caravan began to slow down to about 40mph and did not want to accelerate when gas pedal was pushed down. pulled off to side of road and put van in park. waited a few minutes then put van in drive and tried to pull back onto shoulder. van would not move and heard a squelling noise. put van back in park. tried again to pulle onto highway, this time it went into drive but seemed to be slipping or not fully engaged in gear. finally made it to a service station a couple hundred yards from where i pulled off of the highway. had van towed on flatbed to liberty dodge. upon initial inspection of transmission found dip stick not properly seated/sealed in transmission. liberty dodge suggested transmission be pulled and tore down for further inspection. when mechanic started to remove transmission noticed transmission mount busted loose from transmission case and transmission case cracked. mechanic finished removing transmission fron van and reported to service manager transmission would have to be replaced due to mount being busted and case cracked. van has only 44,292 miles on it. service manager and mechanic could not tell me what or how the transmission mount or case could get cracked. suggested maybe van had ran over something or hit a big pothole in road. dealership would not pay any part of the replacement cost of transmission because they said the factory warranty was only 36,000 miles and the van had over 44,000 miles on it. van was broadsided in may 1999 on drivers side. when it was hit it was parked. was knocked approximately 4 to 6 ft up over a curb and stopped in a grassy area adjacent to parking spot. had front door, front fender, door jam, replaced with realignment done. approximately $4,000 to $5,000 damage. wonder if this might have cracked the transmission case and it evevtually cracked enough to break the mount off and loosing all fluid then quitting altogether.*ak

 Transmission fluid was leaking out on driveway. took vehicle to dealer, and informed by mechanic that differential pin had worked loose. it was moving or swerling around inside & ruined differential/casing. had replaced transmission with a rebuilt one. *ak

 While traveling at approximately 35 mph a clicking noise came from under the van. i removed my foot from the accelerator and the noise softened. i then reingaged the accelerator to resume speed at this point there was a loud noise from under the van and i observed pieces of metal and fluid exiting the rear of the van. the transmission was disengauged and i coasted about 1/8 of a mile to and area were i could safety exit the roadway. *ak

 I received a radiator fan relay recall, could this defective relay help the major transmition seals fail? if so, is dodge/chrysler respnsible for the $1300 repair of the faulty transmision seals? if so, how do i file a claim with the manufacturer? the transmission repair shop claims the seal failure was due to extreme heat, he stated that the seals were very brittle, like dry noodles, nothing like the soft rubber that they should resemble.

 The transmission on this car gaves problem at about 3 months since purchase. we brought it and explained that there was something wrong, but they lied to us and said it was not. eventually, about a year and a half later, the transmissin finally broke and they had to replace it with a new one. after that the car continued to jerk violently wehenever we were going up hill and at 45 mph. we kept bring in it in for them to fix it, knowing that this might create other serious problems with the car, but they continued to refuse to fix it because the jerking motion was not quite as pronounced when their mechanic drove it. according to them, chrisler would not allow them to see the transmission unless it justified it by being completely out of commission. we had them try to service it one more time, but instead, they tried to fix other things in it and even tried to charge me for them. i did not pay because they did not fix the transmission and the other things adjusted had no relation to the problem. about four weeks after this service, i woke up to go to my congregation with my children, when my child informed me that the car was burning. i went to look closely and and saw what looked like a small candle light. i told my children to go inside the house as gas fumes could be leaking and the car could explode. i went up to call the fire dept,which took me about a minute, and by the time i got back, the car was already engulfed in flames. this occurred, without anyone turning anything on, be that ignition or electrical component. this is evidence of one of two things, the mechanic at fitzgerald either deliverately or neglectfully created the hazard when he looked and did the wrong repairs, or this was a factory defect that finally was ascelerated by the constant violent jerking motion created by the transmission ongoing malfunction,which went on for more than 3 years. we are now left without a car that was under warranty (100000 miles) and they refuse to help

 We had to have transmission rebuilt after it was determined that there was a major problem with it . i am not clear on the specifics of it because i know very little about transmissions, but i have all the paperwork on what exactly was done. anyway at roughly 42000 miles, we began hearing loud klunking noise coming from under minivan. had it checked and we were given the great news that it definitely was the transmission, and it was shot. contacted dodge and they stated it is out of warranty, so sorry. we took it to very good and respectable transmission shop and they rebuilt it for around 1000 dollars i believe. it just pisses me off that a transmission does not last past 40000 miles of normal driving conditions. and we had only owned the vehicle for less than a year. and that dodge says sorry, but your over 36000, so we cant help you.

 I purchased this new vehicle 3/99. i don't feel it is fair to pay so much for a new car only to have such a major component break after 3 years. in 2/99 i took the cr to the dealers for the annual inspection, and was told it needed $2,000.00 in repairs. one of the repairs was to service the transmission because it started to jump when put in reverse. i took the car to another mechanic whom i paid $1,400.00 for the work. a few weeks later, we were taking a 150 mile trip one way to take my nephew back to school. we got there and 50miles into the return trip i was on the pa turnpike when i heard what i thought was a siren. we looked around and saw no flashing lights. we started up an incline and the car started to slow down. as it did, the sound of the siren also started to deminish and i realized that the siren we heard was coming from my car. we were 100 miles away from home and had to have the car towed back to philadelphia. it was taken back to the mechanic who i paid for the repairs, and after he had time to check the problem out, i was told i needed a new transmission which would cost me $1,200.00. i am currently without a car, and still owe $10,000.00 on this vehicle. i do not see the justice in having to pay for a brand new car, only to have such a major component give after only 3 years on the road. for that, i would have taken my chances with a used car. my mechanic informs me that he has seen numerous dodge vehicles come into his shop with transmission problems. he told me that there is a band in the transmission that snapped, and he has seen this sort of problem on other occasions with dodge products. this is my second time contacting you regarding this problem, and i would appreciate a response. there has to be a way to protect the consumer from this sort of thing. i only buy us cars so that i can help in the effort to keep america working. if i have to just live with this loss, then i may have to rethink my next purchase very hard. *a

 Since we purchased our van in august of 1997, we have had many repairs and visits to the dealer. as of today, they have not fixed or diagnosed the brake problems. when coming to a stop or applying my brakes, a crunching sound occurs ,and i can feel it in the pedal. it is a fairly loud sound and the vibration is distracting because you lose your brake pedal for a period of 1-2 seconds. i have talked to other dodge caravan owners and plan to take a detailed survey on this matter, but, none to this point have had this problem. this leads me to believe this is a defect in the brake system or antilock brake computer system which is undetectable. this does not occur all the time, and not under the same conditions. this, also, leads me to the conclusion there is a major saftey defect here. i have had this to the dealer and they say they cant diagnose the problem. what am i supposed to do, get in an accident? i have asked that they recall my van, refund full purchase price or replace my vehicle with one similar to mine. this is not the only problem: today it was in for brakes and a blown engine head gasket. previously, catalytic converter/ blower motor/battery/ speed sensor and anti rattle bumpers that still havent corrected problem/fuel filter ground strap and fuel filler tube ground strap have been replaced. also, deglazed brakes, but still brakes squeak.finally, headlights replaced w/housing/lamp, and whatever else they have done to it while in the shop right now. it has been there since tuesday feb.02. this van is no way worth the hassles that i have been put through and i dont think anyone should have this many problems so early on. i have done extensive research on this model and have found atleast 100 complaints for transmission problems and other major repairs and undiagnosed problems with the engine. i think it is time someone stepped in and took a good look at this 96 vehicle because it is not up to saftey standards by a long shot. thank you.

 The left driveshaft interconnecting shaft on my 1996 caravan sheared at the outer edge of the damper weight. i was driving with my family, was stopped at a red light, and heard and felt a loud thump when i attempted to move the car when the light turned green. the car would not move. i looked under the car and saw that the left driveshaft (axle) was sheared. the car was towed and repaired at a dodge dealer. i could not get a satisfactory explanation from the service department as to why this had happened. i have kept the damaged part. the tuned damper weight which encircles the interconnecting shaft at about midpoint on the shaft had rusted and rotted out (etched) the circumference of the shaft, weakening the shaft and creating a stress fracture point which will shear under normal stress loads. the shaft is 27mm in diameter where it is not corroded, but at the cross-section where it sheared at the outer edge of the rubber cover of the damper weight, the shaft is corroded down to 21mm, more than a 22% reduction in shaft diameter! apparently the metal used in the damper weight is subject to severe rusting, and the rubber cover around the weight traps moisture. note: the tripod and cv joints are not damaged; the driveshaft assembly is literally broken in half. if this had happened while we were in motion we could have been injured or killed, particularily if i had been driving on the highway or making a turn with oncoming traffic. this is a serious safety issue. because it is caused by corrosion over time weakening the driveshaft, i am very concerned that driveshafts of this design (or lots using this combination of materials) will be breaking more and more frequently (approximately 6 years before failure?), causing accidents, injuries, and deaths.*ak

 We purchased our 1996 caravan new and we have had to replace the transmission 3 times (of those 1 time was rebuilt under manufacturer warranty) the last time we had rebuilt was in may 2003 and is already starting to act up again, it is slipping in first gear (between 10-35 mph). we have had the fuel pump replaced twice; we are now having problems with gasoline smell coming from under hood. the timing belt just broke this week. we have numerous oil leaks; we are averaging 3-4 quarts of oil per week; we had one mechanic put dye in the oil and he had us drive it for a few days and then checked it and stated there was 4-5 oil leaks and we would be better off to buy a new car; and we have been told this by several mechanics due to the multple problems we have had. we have also had several problems with air conditioner; and the serpentine belt broke several times under warranty and just had to replace it again this week along with the timing belt and cam seals. we had about 2 pages of of warranty work done and right after warranty ran out it went down hill from there. we also had to replace the clock spring and 6 months later there was a recall on the clock spring and now i cannot find my receipt. we are very unhappy with this vehicle and it has more problems than we can count and we very dissappointed that we paid over $18000 for a vehicle and had to put approx more than $4000 in unneccesary repairs that should have never happened. we have been told by several mechanics that the transmissions in these caravans are junk and there aer always problems with them and this doesnt seem very fair to us as consumers because we put out trust into dodge/chrysler corp and we ended up with a lemon. last year i sent an email to chryler and explained the problems and they basicly just blew us off, of course because it wasnt there problem now since the warranty was expired, i will say this i will never buy another chrysler product again.

 Transmission locked up and went out on my dodge caravan. we will need to have the transmission replaced in order to continue to drive this vehicle. luckily we were able to pull over for safety on a major highway. we always pay attention to the upkeep of our vehicles and service them regularly.

 The consumer states that while driving at highway speeds, he stopped at a rest area and the vehicle started smoking. transmission fluid started to come out of the fill tube. the transmission and the torque converter was replaced. *scc

 I detected a problem with the vehicle while still under warranty, however, the dealer did not make a concerted effort to locate the problem. the unusual sound during accelaration escalated to a strong vibration of the steering wheel, which again was not investigated by the dealership. the transmission problem was not detected until the oil leak was investigated (outside of warranty). chrysler was contacted after this incident as well as discussions with the dealership. i have been very disappointed with the vehicle, and the quality of the product, not to mention the poor treatment by both the manufacturer and the dealership. i will never buy another chrysler product.

 The vehicle was parked in a parking lot and another vehicle slightly bumped the caravan, which caused the vehicle to roll back 3 car lengths, resulting in damages, and may have caused injuries. manufacturer not notified as of yet. *ak

 Child seat shoulder harness james trapping child. attempts to loosen causes belt to tighten further. emergency release difficult to use with belts under tension.
