| Since we purchased our van in august of 1997, we have had many repairs and visits to the dealer. as of today, they have not fixed or diagnosed the brake problems. when coming to a stop or applying my brakes, a crunching sound occurs ,and i can feel it in the pedal. it is a fairly loud sound and the vibration is distracting because you lose your brake pedal for a period of 1-2 seconds. i have talked to other dodge caravan owners and plan to take a detailed survey on this matter, but, none to this point have had this problem. this leads me to believe this is a defect in the brake system or antilock brake computer system which is undetectable. this does not occur all the time, and not under the same conditions. this, also, leads me to the conclusion there is a major saftey defect here. i have had this to the dealer and they say they cant diagnose the problem. what am i supposed to do, get in an accident? i have asked that they recall my van, refund full purchase price or replace my vehicle with one similar to mine. this is not the only problem: today it was in for brakes and a blown engine head gasket. previously, catalytic converter/ blower motor/battery/ speed sensor and anti rattle bumpers that still havent corrected problem/fuel filter ground strap and fuel filler tube ground strap have been replaced. also, deglazed brakes, but still brakes squeak.finally, headlights replaced w/housing/lamp, and whatever else they have done to it while in the shop right now. it has been there since tuesday feb.02. this van is no way worth the hassles that i have been put through and i dont think anyone should have this many problems so early on. i have done extensive research on this model and have found atleast 100 complaints for transmission problems and other major repairs and undiagnosed problems with the engine. i think it is time someone stepped in and took a good look at this 96 vehicle because it is not up to saftey standards by a long shot. thank you. | |||

| While driving at approximately 60mph caravan began to slow down to about 40mph and did not want to accelerate when gas pedal was pushed down. pulled off to side of road and put van in park. waited a few minutes then put van in drive and tried to pull back onto shoulder. van would not move and heard a squelling noise. put van back in park. tried again to pulle onto highway, this time it went into drive but seemed to be slipping or not fully engaged in gear. finally made it to a service station a couple hundred yards from where i pulled off of the highway. had van towed on flatbed to liberty dodge. upon initial inspection of transmission found dip stick not properly seated/sealed in transmission. liberty dodge suggested transmission be pulled and tore down for further inspection. when mechanic started to remove transmission noticed transmission mount busted loose from transmission case and transmission case cracked. mechanic finished removing transmission fron van and reported to service manager transmission would have to be replaced due to mount being busted and case cracked. van has only 44,292 miles on it. service manager and mechanic could not tell me what or how the transmission mount or case could get cracked. suggested maybe van had ran over something or hit a big pothole in road. dealership would not pay any part of the replacement cost of transmission because they said the factory warranty was only 36,000 miles and the van had over 44,000 miles on it. van was broadsided in may 1999 on drivers side. when it was hit it was parked. was knocked approximately 4 to 6 ft up over a curb and stopped in a grassy area adjacent to parking spot. had front door, front fender, door jam, replaced with realignment done. approximately $4,000 to $5,000 damage. wonder if this might have cracked the transmission case and it evevtually cracked enough to break the mount off and loosing all fluid then quitting altogether.*ak | |||

| The horn on my 1996 caravan has stopped working; the air-bag warning light stays on all the time; the cruise control system is starting to fail.*ak i saw the report that there have been complaints on newer models. i think the range of model years needs to be broadened. i have also seen reports of other 1996/1997 models with the same problems on internet auto repair web sites. | |||
