The subject vehicle (sv) population includes my 2005-2006 vehicles built between march 2004 and december 2005 manufactured with a trw supplied headlight switch assembly (hsa).the hsa was the primary focus of the investigation; earlier and later vehicles utilized different hsas.consumers complain that the headlights in the subject vehicles do not illuminate when the hsa is turned on, or that the headlights extinguish while on (subject failure).no other driving lights are affected.the front marker, tail, and instrument lamps operate.also, the high beams can be illuminated by holding the turn signal stalk in the up position.as reported by consumers, turning the hsa off and on typically corrects the failure.initially the failures occur infrequently but they become progressively more frequent with age.chrysler has indicated its intention to offer of an extended lifetime warranty on the hsa, so that consumers with this problem can have their hsa replaced at no charge when they begin experiencing the subject failure.commencing sometime in early 2013, chrysler will send letters to sv owners notifying them of the lifetime warranty.the sv headlight system design is essentially the same as that described in ea 05-009, which involved headlight anomalies in earlier model chrysler minivans; refer to it to for additional information.the subject failure is caused by friction between the plastic cam and metal surfaces of the electrical contacts in the hsa, which results in the production of plastic particles (debris).analysis shows that debris can collect on the electrical contact that controls the headlights, resulting in an open circuit and preventing the headlights from turning on.subsequent operation of the hsa may temporarily displace the debris, at which time the headlights operate correctly.lubricant was applied to the plastic cam beginning in december 2005, reducing debris production.consequently, subsequent failure levels were lower.the report counts shown above include only those that involve the subject failure.reports involving other failure modes which were identified have not been included either because they were not safety related, or if they were safety related, because there was no defect trend.the single crash event listed in the failure report summary table above involved a deer strike allegedly due to loss of headlights in february 2006.no injuries were reported in this crash.an april 2004 non-crash incident (

To date, odi has interviewed several complainants who confirmed that the headlights fully extinguish, and remain extinguished, on an intermittent basis.in most cases this occurred while the vehicle was in motion.the occurrences do not show a repeatable pattern, and the problem occurs at a low frequency, typically one or more weeks between failures.for this reason most complainants have not attempted diagnosis or repair of the problem, so the cause is unknown, and the problem continues to occur.in the cases where repairs have been attempted, which consisted mainly of headlight switch and body control module replacements, mixed success is reported.in interviews complainants advised odi that they can usually toggle the headlight switch, or turn on the high beams by actuating the column stalk (pulling it upward), when the headlights unexpectedly turn off.complainants report that toggling the switch is usually effective, and the high beams have always been available when the column is used.during the course of the interviews odi was able to obtain a few suspect headlamp switches for further evaluation.no verifiable crashes or injuries have been identified in the vehicle owner complaints (voqs).chrysler notes that its complaints also include allegations of dimming or flickering of the headlights in addition to loss of headlamps, and that their analysis of available data indicates a declining trend occurring in the field.chrysler data reports two alleged crash incidents; one where a consumers vehicle lost forward lighting and struck a deer, and one where a consumer alleged their lighting stopped working, causing them to depart the roadway and drive into a ditch.a minor injury is alleged in this second incident.both incidents occurred several years ago, and neither allegation has been confirmed by odi.odi is upgrading this investigation to an engineering analysis (ea11-010) to continue its analysis of the alleged defect and its consequences, which will include additional analysis of consumer reports, their frequency and trend, and chrysler's technical information for the headlight system and its components.additionally testing will be conducted to evaluate possible root cause(s) of the alleged defect, and will include analysis of suspect components collected from the field, and/or assessment of subject vehicles that have reportedly experienced the condition.

Headlights go out while driving. after tracking down the culprit it's the headlight switch. it can cause the headlamps to go out entirely while driving. i have repaired it myself but this design flaw can happen at any time. an inexperienced driver can panic and cause an accident. out of all the american cars i have driven this is the biggest law of concern i have found. the need for sight at night is important. do to cost or replacement people may not fix when needed putting a lot of cars on the roads with intermittent lights. *tr

During the night while i was driving, the headlights went off, then blinked on, then off again. after fiddling with the headlight switch, the lights came on and stayed on. this problem has recurred several times since then. it results in an extremely dangerous situation: one is driving at night and suddenly one's vision goes black. the mind at first does not always immediately realize what is happening, and so the human reaction time to an already dangerous situation is not always quick or appropriate. from what i've since read on vehicle forums, many other owners of 2005 dodge caravans have experienced the same problem. a recall should be issued immediately before a serious accident occurs. remember, a caravan is often used to transport children.

Recently purchased the vehicle used. driving at night the head lights flickered then turned off. i manually turned the headlight switch off and on several times when the lights finally came on. this could have been fatal on the interstate or foul weather conditions. i could duplicate the problem intermittently since the first occurance. i went on line and found numerous complaints for dodge caravans with the same problem.

Head lights when turned on did not light after the engine was started and the head light switch turned to on position. switching between high and low beam did not turn on the high beams. holding the turn signal/ dimmer level in the flash position kept the high beams on. turning the car off and on caused lights to work properly sometimes, but not every time. driving over a bump in the street caused the lights to turn off one time. after the bump turning the engine on and off and also the light switch did not cause the lights to come on. after approxamately three incidents the head lights functioned properly on three more daylight trips. the car is not being driven when head lights might be required.

I was driving home and all of a sudden the headlights went out, i was able to get them on by manually using the high beams, but if i let go of the high beam shift, the lights went out. this happened about 10 times in 20 miles. it did it again yesterday on september 28, driving home and i am too scared to drive at night any more which is a problem as it is getting dark earlier. i was driving along and the headlights just went out. i could pull the high beams on which is an issue as i live in a small city but as soon as i let go of the high beam switch -- no lights. also the high beams would go to low and back to high intermittently. i am so scared to drive my car.

I have a 2005 dodge minivan, the headlight would go off while driving, the head light won't turn on unless after few minutes if trying. i went online to see what is the problem with my car, i found out that many people own dodge minivan have the same problems as i have. this is not safe for both the driver and the cars that is on the same road at night. if so many people have the same type of problem with the same kind of the car model, then we really should be ask the manufacture to recall this type of vehicle since many complainers has bring back their cars to the dealerships and they can not fix the problem.

This is 2005 dodge caravan i bought new from a dealership in august 2005.for the last three months i've been having serious problems with my headlights.often they will not turn on at all while vehicle is not moving and a few minutes later they do work.more then once headlights have stoped working while i am driving and it takes between one to ten minutes for the lights to turn on by themselves.during this time the parking lights, dash lights and flashing high beam light do work.i consider this very serious problem for the safety of the driver and the passingers and my opinion is that this is a manifacturer malfunction.

In july 2008 both headlights went out while driving at night. turning the headlight switch off and on caused the headlights to turn on. this occurred occasionally for the next 2 years with increasing frequency. during a trip to annapolis in oct 2010, the headlights would not turn on. manipulating the headlight switch did not turn them on. the high beam will turn on when the stalk on the steering column is operated and the headlight switch is on and the motor running. internet searches suggest this is a common problem with this model and the headlight switch or drounding is the cupprit.

Both headlights went out numerous times and would come back on a couple of seconds later; bumps did not affect it and neither did jiggling the headlight switch or ignition switch; it just happened sporadically with no apparent reason; very dangerous, and according to internet is a huge problem with many other caravan owners; please do something before it kills someone if it hasn't already thank you

The headlights intermittently shut off, or won't work at all on my 2005 dodge caravan. the issue started nearly 2 years ago. i had it into the dealer for the issue but the lights were working at that point. a few months after the warranty expired, the problem became more frequent. today, the headlights rarely come on. the parking lights work fine, just not the headlights. if i pull back the dimmer switch, the high beams will come on but as soon as you let go of the switch, they shut back off. i've seen thousands of complaints of this exact issue on other consumer based websites. this is truly a safety hazzard and should result in a recall.

The power locks stopped working. i feel that this is a safety concern since while driving down the road with my children they could open the doors. it is supposed to lock automatically but i can't even manually lock it. also the headlights randomly shut off while driving.

I have a '05 dodge caravan that has the headlamps shutting off during morning and evening use. sometimes, the lamps blinks on then off, or several blinks. i have had to pull off the road when this occurs, flipping the switch to the off/on position. sometimes the switch activates the lamps, in others, as in this morning, the lamps stayed off and i risked being pulled over b the local police/sheriff personall.

2005 caravan: headlights are intermittent just as everyone else is describing. i went shopping tonight around sunset. when i got to my vehicle to return home the headlights wouldn't work. after 5 minutes of switching on and off, they finally came on. at some point during my 3 mile ride home the lights went off on their own. this is very dangerous!!! the headlights do this all the time. there is a website where 30+ people have reported the same problem: http://autoforum.classifieds1000.com/dodge-grand_caravan/2005_dodge_grand_caravan_random_headlamp_issue

Healdights will not turn on or will spontaneouly shut off while driving at night. if the headlight switch is toggled on/off several times they may continue to work again. the most recent occurence happend when i was driving through a mountain pass at night. this is an extremely dangerous situation on the 2005 dodge caravan yet the dealerships have no idea on how to correct the problem.

Letter from senator kohl on behalf of constituent re problem with dodge caravan (respond directly to constituent) dot/i#2010-1105 *tgw the consumer stated auto manufactures shouldn't have direct control over the operation of automobiles once in the consumers possession. the consumer stated his vehicle was designed where the dimmer switch operated a relay that did the actual switching and caused a noticeable delay. which meant the consumer was unable to dim the headlights if suddenly faced with oncoming traffic. the headlights themselves operated through another relay and he had to have it repaired when the lights started going off and coming on while driving at night. *jb

2005 dodge caravan, headlights just go out a night for no reason. also at times, when you turn the headlights on they do not come on. other times when you turn them off they do not turn off unless you turn them on and off a few times. this started about 7 months ago, now it is becoming a real safety issue. i contacted dodge and they advised me to bring the vehicle in for evaluation and they will run diagnostic tests or i can just have the switch replaced. they advised me that this does not happen often with this vehicle. *tr

The headlights do not always come on when switched on. it sometimes takes several or many many tries to make them work. occasionally, the headlights turn off while driving for no apparent reason and is not always noticed until we are on a dark street. this is very dangerous and i have found forums with many other similar complaints for this make and model. http://www.topix.com/forum/autos/dodge-caravan/t5ihkiqmtbk2hcua7 i believe it is a defective switch that should be recalled. *tr
