I was traveling at 65 mph on 4 lane interstate highway. was on a bridge with no shoulder. engine suddenly lost all power. vehicle was coasting and slowing down rapidly. cars behind me were hitting the brakes to avoid rear-ending my vehicle as i attempted to make my way to the shoulder. once across bridge, i pulled to the shoulder. engine would turnover but would not start. towed to dodge dealership. dealer diagnosed problem as broken timing chain, which caused camshaft to stop turning. three exhaust valves were thus held open while the crankshaft continued turning, causing pistons to hit valves, bending valves and denting piston tops near edge of piston. complete new engine required. chrysler corporation is not forthcoming with an explanation for failure or a corrective action. there is no service bulletin per the dealer. i looked online at dodge challenger user forums, and found dozens of owners had experienced identical problem: at 35,000-45,000 miles, dodge challenger 5.7 l hemi with automatic transmission and mds (multiple displacement system) cylinder cutout activated, suddenly lost all power due to broken timing chain. this is obviously a design flaw that is a safety issue. the nhtsa should compel chrysler corporation to develop a corrective action and recall all dodge challenger vehicles with 5.7 l hemi engine immediately.

While driving at highway speed the vehicle made a pop sound and lost power. i was forced off the highway as there were no shoulders and had to push the vehicle across traffic to safety. the timing chain tensioner failed, resulting in the timing chain breaking. this resulted in damage to the upper portion of the motor, including all intake and exhaust valves, marring on the pistons and cracked heads.

On or about june of 2011 i was driving my car in ga, and the engine just shut off. after contacting the manufacture. dodge had the car towed to thompson dodge in thompson ga. i was told there by the head mechanic that my engine suffered a total catastrophic failure . they ( manufacture) decided to rebuild instead of replacing my engine as i had asked. then on thursday 11/22/2012 i was driving (60-65 mph) home to nj from texas. and the engine did the same thing. leaving me stranded. after the first time i was told that the timing chain broke. i find it hard to believe that a 2010 challenger will break 2 chains within 2 years. there has to be a underlying cause for this. please advise me and respond. i can be reached at [xxx]. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).*tr

While driving in stop and go traffic the check engine oil and esp light came on followed by four chimes and then car completely shut off and the steering locked. after several attempts, the car started up again and the codes turned off. approx 1 month later the same thing occurred. i was making a turn on a roundabout when the same thing occurred during heavy traffic and almost caused an accident. i took the car into the dealership and they said there was nothing captured on the computer. they replaced the key fob and said that this should fix the problem. 4-5 months later, i was in reno, nv. i was driving 20-35 mph and again check engine oil light, esp and four chimes and the car shut off again, the steering locked, and i coasted until i came to a complete stop and placed it in park, started car and oil and codes turned off. 24 hours later when driving home on the freeway in heavy traffic, the same thing occurred!!! i put on my hazard lights and let the car roll, came to a complete stop, placed car in park and after several attempts, the car started and codes turned off. the following day i took the car back to the dealership and again they said they could not find a problem with it, as nothing was recorded in the internal computer. i asked for the car to be kept until the problem was resolved. they were not able to duplicate it in that one week. i asked for a co pilot computer to be placed in the vehicle in hopes of capturing the problem when it occurred, as the codes turn off after car is started. dodge sent out a rep to inspect vehicle. after inspection they stated nothing is wrong with the vehicle, they cannot duplicate the problem, and there are no codes stored on the computer. i am now faced with driving an unsafe vehicle that shuts off on me in the city and most dangerously on the freeway with no set pattern and the manufacturer has done nothing to fix it!! *tr

My 2010 challenger srt8 with automatic transmission stalled when making a right-hand turn at approximately 5:00 pm on 9/5/12. engine was at normal operating temperature and the ac was running. i was travelling at about 35 mph and began braking to make a right turn into a service station. as i started into the turn at about 10 mph, the engine stalled resulting in loss of brakes and power steering. i was able to complete the turn and stop the car with hard brake pressure. no indicator warning lights appeared on the instruments. i put the car in park and restarted the car, but the transmission was inoperative. neither drive or reverse would engage. i did not notice any warning or alert lights indicating a malfunction or transmission issue. i stopped and restarted the engine again and the transmission engaged and worked normally. there were 6800 miles on car on 9/5/12. the vehicle was purchased 10 days ago, and tsbs were checked before the purchase. no mention of engine shutoff issues are listed on the nhtsa database of tsbs or recalls. i did not check customer complaints. if i had, an knew to check about stalls, i would not have purchased this vehicle. considering the severity of this issue, the number of complaints on this database, and the fact this issue has been going on for the last 4 or more years, nhtsa should initiate a defect investigation immediately. more than one person has stated on this complaint forum that this is a life threatening condition and hopefully someone doesn't have to die to get dodge to solve this problem. too late. check out complaint 10395526. apparently someone did. but the complaint doesn't show injury or death and it should be corrected. *tr

While driving my 2010 challenger rt 4.7l hemi on the ca 15 freeway at 70 mph the car suddenly shut down. the warning lights for engine and oil came on and i had to coast to a stop. steering and brakes remained operational and luckily i made it to the shoulder as the 15 freeway is extremely busy and fast. i had the car towed to a nearby dodge dealer where they informed me that my plastic timing chain guides had disintegrated and caused a blown engine. the car repairs (rebuilt engine) were covered under the 100k mile powertrain warranty but took 4 weeks to complete. the car had 54k freeway miles on it when this happened, was regularly maintained, and never showed any indications that a severe issue would have been forthcoming. i now question the longevity of the new rebuilt engine as same timing chain assembly parts were used during the repair. noticed there is at least one other identical report on the nhtsa website so reported on my incident. *tr

This is the second time that my challenger has stalled when making a right-hand turn; the first time was about a eight months ago. yesterday, i slowed to turn into my office parking lot. when i was making this right-hand turn, the engine stalled and i could not steer the car - almost hitting the curb. after putting the car in park, i was able to restart the car. *tr

While driving on the interstate my dodge challenger was traveling between 65-72 mph and a wind noise came through either the driver's side window of the left 1/4 window that does not roll up or down. this hollowing noise has been addressed 7 times and nothing the dealer has done has fixed it. i have been told it is my imagination, the car has no noises, it is not the rear-differential and might just be me. the weather stripping has been replaced, foam has been put in on the left and right side fenders via the wheel well and nothing has fixed the noise. on saturday of last week, we made a 120 mile trip to see family and the car was put in to cruise position and was set at 72 mph and the noise was almost deafening. i think this should be listed on the reports here and it is an ongoing battle between me and chrysler. *tr

While making a slow right turn at approximately 25 mph my vehicle stalled. the engine completely died and the oil light came on. the steering and brakes also did not function. i had to restart the car to regain control. it started back up right away as if nothing happened. although i do not remember the exact dates this has happened to me about 4 previous times. the dealership has no answers and they assume nothing is wrong because it doesn't show up on their diagnostic computer. if someone had been behind me or in front of me there would have been an accident. eventually, there likely will be. a recall needs to be issued on this problem and a solution must be found asap. according to numerous reports, this has happened repeatedly with 2010 dodge challengers. *tr

The vehicle stalled after braking at around 15 mph. the vehicle was able to be restarted, but unable to shift into gear. as mentioned by many others, this is a severe safety risk and needs to be looked into. my vehicle was towed to dealer and an ecm flash was conducted, but i am afraid of this issue reoccuring like so many others.

This is the second time in less than 30 days that the challanger r/t has shut off while making a turn at speeds of 25 mph or less. reference odi id # 10421234 / incident date of 08/19/2011. wife was making a left hand turn off of a busy street (40 mph speed limit, into my home neighborhood) when the car suddenly dies, steering & brakes go hard, oil pressure light illuminates, and she had to coast to a stop, put the car in park, press the start button (even though dash message said key fob not found), car re-starts, and she continued 1/2 mile to our home. i'm not comfortable letting my wife or kids drive this car when the probability of it dying is very possible. i just drove the car up the narrow mountain passes to big bear, ca (8,000 ft elevation) & back 3 days ago, and this could have caused a major accident if it had died and i had lost control on a windy mountain road. how many people have to be injured or die before someone forces dodge / chrysler to identify & correct this problem. car is going to the dealership tomorrow morning, where i expect to get alot of nothing, but atleast my complaints will be intered into the service system.

This is 4th or 5th time this issue has happened, have brought it to the dealer and they have come up with nothing. there are several complaints on nhtsa about this issue, as well as thousands online, yet the dealer states they are unaware of the issue. normal driving conditions, slowing down to make a turn and the vehicle completely shuts off and i lose power steering and power braking. the car becomes very hard to maneuver and stop. the car was stopped in an intersection, and thankfully the approaching cars were far enough away to slow down and stop. i then put the car in park and start it up and drive off with no other issues. this intermittent stalling is becoming a very dangerous issue and should be looked into further before someone is seriously injured, if they haven't been already.

My wife was driving the vehicle at highway speeds down an expressway. she exited and was applying the brakes as she approached a stop sign. as the vehicle slowed down to about 15 mph, the car abruptly shut off, without any warning whatsoever. when the car stalled, it became difficult to steer and brake, as the power steering and brakes were no longer functional. in order to restart the vehicle, she had to come to a complete stop, place the transmission in park, and then hit the start button. this was very dangerous, as there were other motorists exiting the expressway behind her. there are many other open complaints with the nhtsa for the 2010 dodge challenger srt8 - each describing an identical problem with random stalling. additionally, there are many very similar descriptions of this problem on dodge challenger owner group forums. i took the car to my local dodge dealership and just as other challenger owners have experienced, they were unable to duplicate the problem. they also acted as though they have never heard of the problem, even though many documented cases exist. i called chrysler customer care, and like the dealership, they refused to help. i spoke with two different representatives, and both of them claimed to know nothing about the challenger stalling issue, and refused to transfer me to another department that might be willing to investigate. this is a very dangerous problem and appears to be very common with this particular car. chrysler needs to address this issue before someone is hurt or killed.

I bought a 2010 srt8 dodge challenger a few weeks ago with just 50 miles on it. i now have approximately 800. on my way home from the dealer, the car stalled twice, both times while coming to a stop. the same thing happened yesterday and today, making it 4 times in less than a month. similar to others, my dealer said there was no evidence of the stalling in their diagnostics. 3 out of the 4 times i was in traffic, with the other time occurring in a parking lot. there was no warning when it happened. after each stall, i had to put the gear in park and restart. the motor starts with no hesitation after a stall. there are dozens of complaints. who is going to do something before someone is injured or killed? currently, i feel the care is too unsafe to have my wife and kids in the car while driving.

Car has stalled and shut down 3 times since purchasing it in 08/2010. all three cases the car had just completed a turn onto a busy highway where luckily i was able to coast it, with no power steering, to the side of the road. on all three cases, the only indication i had that the car shut off was that the oil light flashed on. i was able to restart the car easily the first time this happened, but the third time it happened, it would not shift into drive. it finally did it after the third time i tried it. i am very concerned with this problem. i am a female that loves her new car, but my husband is worried about me driving it on the highway if it keeps shutting off. this is a dangerous problem and dodge needs to get on the ball and figure out what is going on. we have an appointment first thing in the morning with the dealership, but after reading all of the complaints from everyone else, i have little faith they will be able to find out what is going on. dodge, please fix my car!

2010 dodge challenger srt8....vehicle stalls out when slowing down. this has happened now three times. once it happened while making a right turn into a parking spot and the other 2 times it has occurred on the road when slowing down to stop at a red light. oil light came on in one of the instances but i am unsure if it came on the other two. with complete loss of power this makes the car difficult to steer. on all three occasions, the car did start back up with the push button start, however it did crank over very slowly. car is going into the dealership tomorrow to evaluate this, however it appears that with other people who have have this happen, the dealer was unable to duplicate the problem. this is extremely dangerous and hopefully this can be remedied before anyone is seriously injured or worse.

2010 challenger srt8 automatic has stalled again for the second time. it has 4,820 miles on the odometer. this is the second time the engine has stalled. prior report 10354193. i had been driving for about 30 minutes and slowed to turn left into a driveway when the engine stalled. i placed the car in nutral and started the car without a problem.

Normal driving conditions, pull up to a stop sign to make a right turn and car just dies. lose all power, no power steering and incredibly hard to stop the car completely. this is now the 3rd time this has happened, going to the dealership to get it looked at again. this is incredibly dangerous if it were to happen when crossing an intersection instead of at a stop sign. ive read hundreds of reports like mine on forums and yet dodge is unaware of this incredibly dangerous situation?? i wont be taking my 1 month old daughter in this car...

Vehicle suddenly shut down in the middle of making a right hand turn under normal driving conditions. i was able to restart the vehicle and complete the turn without incident due to the alertness of the driver behind me. i did not notice which symbols, if any, lit up on the instrument panel. having a vehicle shut down for no apparent reason while driving is a very dangerous situation that could result in an accident.

I was making a slow u-turn and the engine shut off (stalled). this actually the third incident since purchasing the vehicle in december. i was pulling on to the freeway from a stop (under 10mph) and the engine shut off (stalled). also, i was slowing to a red light (under 10mph) and the engine shut off (stalled). i don't have the date and mileage of the first two incidents, so i've given the details of the third.

After exiting highway, engine stalled when traveling about 5 mph. was able to restart engine without incident. was not aware of any warning lights prior to incident. the following day, the same happened, after making a left turn into driveway, engine stalled without warning while traveling at 5 mph. was able to restart engine and continue.

Engine stalls when coming to a stop
08/31/20102000
Had been driving the car for approx. 1.5 hours, approached a red light and traffic in front of me had stopped abruptly forcing me to make a fast stop. not a full force stop but a quick reaction/sudden stop. then my car stalled out and the oil light came on. i put it in park and restarted the car. it started right back up. i put it in drive but it hesitated to move for approximately 3-5 seconds, then took off. the car had approximately 2000 miles on it. currently it has almost 3000 miles. this had happened once before this incident also as i was slowing down to make a left hand turn onto the street i live on. same thing, car restarted right up. that was with about 1000 miles on the car. i have an appointment with the dealership to see if they can detect something. however, i've read on some forums that it has been happening to these cars quite a bit in automatics 5.7 and 6.1 motors. my fear is that me or a member of my family, as well as some unsuspecting other driver will run into either my back end or from the side if if stalls again while making a turn across oncoming traffic. thank you.

I just bought a 2010 dodge challenger srt8 in june. there has been 4 different occasions where the engine completely shuts off. i brake to turn and the engine shuts down and i see the oil light come on briefly. luckily, i havent been rear ended. i took it to the dealership, after keeping it for a week, they came back and said they found nothing wrong with the car. in addition, the headliner for the sunroof hangs down and the dealership tells me that it is on national back order. i am not the only one with this complaint....does it take a person getting killed before dodge recalls these cars.

I just purchased a 2010 dodge challenger srt8, it has 1324 miles on it. today as i was turning in a road the car engine stalls! i had to put my car in park and restart it. after looking on car forums this seems to be very common with these cars. my question is, why hasn't a recall been issued for this problem by dodge. the dealership said it had not heard of this problem, i told him to go google it on the internet and he would find that it was a common problem.

My 2010 dodge challenger has randomly shut off four times in my past year of ownership. twice in braking situations coming to a redlight, and twice in parking lots at low speeds, thank god! until the vehicle has come to a stop power steering and brakes are not functioning properly so evasion of other cars, pedestrians, property becomes extremely limited. i am lucky this has not happened at higher speeds on faster roads, however i am aware of other consumers who have had this happen, and are now afraid to drive similar cars.

2 incidents in 2010 srt challenger of vehicle shutting off for no apparent reason. ist incident was after stopping at stoplight; oil light flashed briefly then engine shut off. 2nd incident was during a right turn into a shopping center; engine shut off just as pulled off the main road; did not notice any indicator lights as was concerned about vehicles behind me. both times car was able to be started (keyless pushbutton start) within one or two presses of start button. i have 1760 miles on the car and it has happened twice now. incidents separated by about 2 months (car purchased 2/2010). have read on forums about this happening to many other challengers. report to nhsta was recommended to another owner by dealer.
