Defect SummaryCertain passenger vehicles equipped with 2.7 liter engines and mk25e braking systems may exhibit inadequate clearance between the rear brake tubes and the exhaust gas recirculation tube. contact between the brake tubes and exhaust gas recirculation tube over an extended period of time may cause the brake tubes to wear through and cause a brake fluid leak.
Consequence SummaryThis can result in a decrease of braking force and the potential for an engine compartment fire.
Corrective SummaryDealers will inspect the rear brake tubes for damage and replace them free of charge. a clip will also be installed to secure the brake tubes to the right front shock tower to maintain proper clearance to the exhaust gas recirculation tube. the recall began on june 26, 2006. owners may contact daimlerchrysler at 1-800-853-1403.
NotesDaimlerchrysler recall no. f18. customers may also contact the national highway traffic safety administration

 1. in october only 5 months after buying my '06 charger i noticed a lot of noice coming from the brakes. 2. in november i took it in to the dealer and they said everything was fine that it mainly should happen when it gets colder. 3. i took it in last week in march and told them that it has been 75 degrees and up and that they still make noice at any speed. they said that there is nothing wrong with my brakes. after looking at other similar cases i am now assured that this is a big problem with other vehicles like mine and that they need to fixed!!

I purchased a 2006 dodge charger brand new in march 2006. ever since then there has been problems. i have taken the car to the local dodge dealership where the car was purchased. i had been experiencing problems with the brakes not stopping and squeaking and the fact that i could be accelerating up to about 20-30mph and the car would not go any further. the car is showing signs of transmission problems. these problems lead me to the dealership which was where the car was purchased. the service department said i needed brake pads and nothing else was wrong, which i got brake pads from a different business. the car still continues to do the same thing with the problems with the transmission and the brakes. i see there was no results with going to the dealer so i contacted the corporate chrysler customer assistance # and they advised me to take the car back for a diagnosis, i advised them that i previously done that and there was nothing found. they told me there was nothing they could do because the dealer would need to recognize the problem. *tr

About 1 year ago as i was driving along interstate 95 the instrument needles all went to 0 or far left then went back to normal immediately. as time went on this occurred more frequently. about six months later as i was driving at night the needles dropped off and the head lights went off and stayed off until i switched from the auto position to the manual on position. the next time it happened i was at a stop light and the car cut off in the middle of the road. i called a police officer because i thought i might get rear-ended. after about 5 minutes the car started but ran rough. just this past weekend while driving at night in a parking lot the needles dropped off, the headlights went out, and the breaks malfunctioned.

Disk brake noise. i have had this car since it was new, and have had frequent problems with the brakes, mostly inb the front axel. the dealer replaced the front rotors and pads at least 2 times i believe, and recently a few months ago, i changed the front pads again to try to get rid of the squealing noise. i have purchased oem brakes and rotors from the dealer, and last time i replced them, i used a brand from a local auto parts store. it seems that i the brakes stay quiet for a little while after they have been cleaned and services, but soon start returning to making a horrible squealing noise anytime the brakes are used. after several trips for this at two different dealers, and reading up on the manuactures web forums, it looks like this has been happening to a lot more people than just me. i feel there must be a design or manufacturing issue that needs to be addressed to correct this type of chronic problem.

Brakes have locked up x3. vehicle almost skidded into the back of another vehicle @ 40mph. afraid to drive vehicle. had it checked out by dealership & repair shop, nothing wrong. repair shop did note brake squeak and vehicle shaking even at low mph during test drive- he had just put new rotor and brake pads less than 3mnths ago! vehicle also has a noticeable 'kick' or 'jarring' when driving- even at 5-10mph in parking lot when accelerator pedal is not even pressed. i am very afraid to drive this car especially w/my child. this is my only vehicle and as a single mother and educator -safety, security, and reliability is important. *tr

At 12,500 miles took vehicle to dodge dealer complaining of the front brakes squealing. they told me the rotors were warped, probably from going though a puddle when they were hot, which i had not done. i had to pay to have the rotors turned. still squealed. ended up having to buy new rotors and pads for front. now, the rear squeal so bad i am embarrassed to drive it. will end up having to replace the rear brakes. *tr

I purchased a 2006 dodge charger in august of 2006. the first couple thousand miles i would hear my front brakes grinding, thinking it would go away i kept driving the vehicle. the grinding noise from my brakes continued to get worse so i took my vehicle to the dealership with 8000 miles on it. the dodge dealership told me the noise was normal but they would lube and clean the pads. that didn't help at all so i took my vehicle back to the dealership a week later in which they still told me the grinding noise is normal and there are no safety problems with the brakes. i know have under 10,000 miles on my charger and the grinding noise is getting worse. i'm very concerned about my families safety in the vehicle ,i know the noise is not normal and i believe the dealership knows that too. *jb

My brakes on my dodge charger se with the 3.5 l v6 have been squealing. it first started one day when i was driving and slowing down to a complete stop at a intersection. as i getting very close the intersection i heard a squealing like a school bus, so naturally i assumed it was a older vehicle with bad brakes. i kept driving residential neighborhoods with no other cars present and again when i came to stop at a stop sign the squeal was present. i only seemed to get the squeal when slowing to a stop. also the brakes sometimes make a moaning sound especially when you come to slow down. good example is if you are backing into a parking space and press the gas too much, you naturally press the brake to stop and then will ease off of it. i get the moaning sound going in reverse motion and forward motion. i let me dealer know who said that my vehicle was past 12,000 and that i would simply have to deal with it. this makes no sense for a new car to be doing this. *jb

I've had a 2006 charger rt for less than a year. for a couple of months the brakes began squealing and feeling like there grinding at times when i stop. each time i visited the dealership i was told that the noise was normal because the brakes and brake pads were metallic. i recently took a trip up in the mountains, coming down i couldn't even use the brakes because the car began shaking and pulsating rapidly i could barely hold onto the steering wheel, luckily there weren't any other cars around. after checking out this website and charger forums i'm definitely going to demand that my rotors be checked and fixed. *nm

Poor brake system on the dodge daytona rt 2006. my vehicle only has 27,000 miles on it and my rear and front rotors are shot. i have replaced the brake pads once already. dodge is saying that this is common and is not taking responsibility for this. to have this fixed will be approx $700. this appears to be a problem with several buyers of this vehicle. i have reviewed messages on www.chargerforums.com with people complaining about the same problems and dodge does nothing about this issue. *tr

First as everyone else has experienced the brakes started to squeal. then around 30,000 miles when brakes were applied at speed around 60 mph the steering wheel began to vibrate. later followed by extreme motion in the wheel from left to right and eventually the brakes began to cease during acceleration. had the rotor resurfaced and new pads. 8,000 miles later steering wheel doing the same thing and when i took it to the dealership they said my tires were bad and nothing wrong with the brakes. i find this hard to believe as the exact same problem happened before ending up with a bill around $1,000. so now i am waiting for the breaks to get so bad that they will actually service the problem. i am so disgusted with this and don't know what course of action to take. *tr

Squeaky brakes/rotors i have been reading for the last several months about 2006 daytona r/t owners complaining about squeaky brakes. i too have suffered from this problem. i bought my gmg daytona in may of 2006. my brakes started to squeak in august 2006. i brought my car in three times to have this problem rectified. each time i received answers from the dealer similar to the ones i have read here. finally i was forced to write a letter to the dealer. january 8, 2008 i received a quick reply and the vice president of t he dealership agreed to look at the problem. they replaced my rear brake pads and rotors. on the way home from the dealership the brakes began squeaking as bad as before. i was quite dismayed. i telephoned the vp of the dealership, whose reply was basically we did what we can, we changed your brakes, their as good as new, and if the squeak, well then that's what they'll do, and we are basically done with this.... i find this totally unsatisfactory. good luck selling a $25,000 car with screaming brakes. i have thought of invoking the lemon law, as even though the car is safe, the brake issue could severely impact my resale value. i have finally broken down and bought hawk ceramic pads which i'm going to have installed. this to me does not seem the way this issue should be solved. i don't buy the hi-po brake sell that we are getting from dodge. i think the pads are substandard, and perhaps so are the rotors. this should not be the case on a car for which i paid $32,000. i love the car, and would hate to have to ditch it because of the brakes. *tr

We purchased a 2006 dodge charger rt brand new in 4/2006. at approximately 8000 miles we started hearing the brakes squeal. it came and went but at 12k we took the car in for service. we were told nothing was wrong. i told the service manager that i knew there was a pretty big issue with the brake squeal because i had done my research. we took the car back in and they replace the brake pads and resurfaced the rotors. the brakes started squealing again immediately. i was then told that it was normal and that since asbestos was outlawed that all brakes are made with more metal so they will squeak. you and i both know that that is not true i have owned many vehicles and there brakes don't squeal. i was then told my wife drives the car to passively and the brakes are heavy duty and the car needed to be stopped more aggressively. i tried to do the panic stop thing but it is dangerous and of coarse it made no difference. our last contact was that they were aware of the issue, had no resolution and they would call when they did. the dealership has since gone out of business. this has got to be a safety issue. you cannot run around with your brakes squealing and have confidence that there is not something wrong. chrylser knows that this is an issue and i want to lodge a formal complaint. i was told that i need to call the corporate representative and complain to them. which i will do. however what happens to me or my family if the brakes fail. the dealer ship has kept all the parts they replaced and the service records can be retrieved of the vin. i hope that at least a record of this issue is being kept and maybe it is time to force chrysler into a recall and permanent repair to the brakes. thank you *tr

I purchased a 2006 dodge charger r/t used, with only approx. 4,500 miles on it. after driving it the remaining part of the winter (dec thru feb) and into the warmer months, i noticed that my brakes started to squeal when i would brake to slow down from up to 50 miles per hour. i had contacted the dealers service center and had them inspect the brakes and all i received was the explanation that the brakes glazed over and the only thing to do would be to turn the rotors which would have cost me over $200. i went elsewhere and had the front rotors turned for less money, however, after approx. 3 weeks the squeal came back. prior to owning this vehicle i owned a pontiac grand am whose brakes never squealed even when aftermarket brakes and rotors were put on. it would appear to me that a car of this price, would not have brakes that squeal after less than 7,000 to 11,000 miles being driven. *tr

I own a 2006 dodge charger r/t that has a recurring brake problem. there is a noticeably loud sound coming from at least 2 and possibly all 4 wheel wells. when the parking brake is engaged i have intermittent slippage before the car settles. and finally, when attempting to brake i receive occasional shuddering in the car. i have attempted to take the car into three separate dodge dealerships in the dallas texas area on seven different occasions and on six of those trips was informed nothing was wrong with the brakes. on my fifth service trip a brake job was performed, but has had no effect in fixing the problem. on the subsequent two trips i was again told that nothing could be found wrong with the brakes and that the noise was normal. this problem began at the 11,000 mile mark and has been deteriorating since then (currently at 27,000 miles). if nothing is done soon, i feel that i will need to unnecessarily and unjustly purchase an entirely new brake system for my car to ensure my driving safety. *ak

I purchased a new dodge charger r/t + rt on 7/29/06 from westoaks dodge in thousand oaks, ca. starting at around 1500 miles, i noticed a squealing sound from what sounds like the front passenger wheel. this sound seems to happen on a consistent basis when braking lightly. i waited to see if the problem would go away. the problem persisted and so i brought it into westoaks dodge service department on 10/16/06. after westoaks inspected, they returned the vehicle to me in the same state and told me that the brake noise is normal and they would not service the car unless daimler chrysler approved. i then submitted my problem to dodge customer support at http://www.dodge.com on 10/17/06 and received the following reply on 10/24/06 (paraphrased): unfortunately, given the many variables involved, we are unable to diagnose your vehicle's problem via email. we recommend contacting your authorized daimlerchrysler dealership to arrange an appointment for proper diagnosis and repair. if you have been working with an authorized dealership but the problem is not yet resolved, seeking a second opinion from a different dealer may be a viable option. senior staff representative chrysler group customer assistance center reference number: 15560270 email case number: 1546160 basically, to me this sounds like another exercise in futility and to waste time and money bringing my car in to another dealer to hear the same thing. my conversation with the other dealer in my area has not added to my confidence. as a business owner myself, i know that i must stand behind my products or i will not be successful. consumers are much too sophisticated to be told that a problem is normal when they can find many comparable products without this problem. if i told my customers this i would not be successful for very long. please help me in resolving this matter. *nm

Front rotor warping and front rotor premature deterioration. i took my 2006 dodge charger daytona in at 600 miles with premature rotor gouging. i was told by keene dodge in jarrestsville md that this was normal. i believed and told them no way it was a normal problem with a vehicle. they took the car back to their service area. after a short visit to the service area i was told by the service writer that nothing was wrong with it. i was not happy, but what is one to do in a situation where one is blown off. i drove the car the way it was and kind of ignored the problem. well it got worse as the miles went by until while braking the car had shaking at highway braking along with pulsating. i took the car to cook motorcars of aberdeen md and at first was told this was a normal situation. i again objected. i made an appointment. my car now had 7900 miles on it. i dropped the car off while i was at work and called around 1pm and was told that the rotors were indeed warped. the service writer told me that they tried to turn the rotors and when they did there was not enough metal left for safe braking. they replaced the rotors, with the same kind that was on the vehicle when i purchased it. i belong to the dodge charger forums and there are 100's of charger owners having the same problems and are being told this is normal. here is a link to my thread on the forums and you can read all the complaints that i have gotten. this needs to be addressed because there are dodge charger owners who are paying for this apparent defect on our cars. http://www.chargerforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23835 i want the public to know about this complaint as chrysler needs to address this and address this now. *nm

I was approaching a stop light and applied my brakes to stop. i felt my brakes slipping as if they were pressing fully to the floor not stopping my vehicle. in result i rear ended another vehicle and that chain reacted hitting another vehicle. i took my vehicle to a brake specialist and they diagnosed the problem being the brakes needed replaced and 2 rotors needed resurfaced. my vehicle is a 2006 model. i've made the dealer aware of what happened and they said the problem will be fixed upon their diagnosis as well. *nm

 1. in october only 5 months after buying my '06 charger i noticed a lot of noice coming from the brakes. 2. in november i took it in to the dealer and they said everything was fine that it mainly should happen when it gets colder. 3. i took it in last week in march and told them that it has been 75 degrees and up and that they still make noice at any speed. they said that there is nothing wrong with my brakes. after looking at other similar cases i am now assured that this is a big problem with other vehicles like mine and that they need to fixed!!
