PE08052CHRYSLER GROUP LLC09/02/200811/10/2008PRNDL MISALIGNMENT08V583000
In a november 5, 2008 letter, chrysler submitted a defect information report describing a defect condition that could result in prndl misalignment (i.e., incorrect gear indication) in approximately 20,300 model year (my) 2006 through 2009 dodge charger and magnum police vehicles built from may 17, 2005 through october 21, 2008 (nhtsa recall no. 08v-583, chrysler recall h37).according to chrysler, the gearshift cable may become disengaged from the steering column mounting bracket and cause an incorrect transmission gearshift position display.this could allow the vehicle to move inadvertently and cause a crash without warning.chrysler dealers will remedy the defect condition by installing a redundant locking mechanism to the gearshift cable and the mounting bracket to ensure proper retention and shift linkage function. chrysler uses a unique column shifter in these police vehicles.after pe08-052 was opened, chrysler inspected a my 2009 police vehicle and noted that though the gearshift cable appeared fully seated into the steering column mounting bracket, the cable retention feature (locking pin) was not fully seated.chrysler subsequently determined that if the retention feature is not fully seated, the cable may disengage from the mounting bracket, resulting in the shift linkage system not functioning to design intent with the potential for incorrect gear position indication via the prndl display.chysler's inspection of 59 my 2009 dodge charger and magnum police vehicles in september and october found 30 where the gearshift cable was not fully engaged to the mounting bracket.there are no reported crashes or injuries related to the defect condition to date. this investigation is closed.

Interlock brake lever broke. this is the piece that locks your car in park and you have to press brake pedal to release lock before shifting. car wont come out of park position. i have seen several complaints of this online for dodge and they are only willing to fix certain vin numbers. i would like mine to be considered being as it only had 30k miles when this happened. *tr

Transmission shifter interlock lever problem: i read there was a silent recall for this problem only for cars built between june and september of 2007. my car was built shortly before this period. my question is: why isn't there a recall for all vehicles having this problem? a dealership quoted me over $400 to replace a single pink plastic part with a small, frail hook (which is what broke off) that attaches to a small spring. i believe this is a defective part and a design flaw that warrants a comprehensive recall. i cannot explain to you how much this has upset me and would really like the nhtsa to take the appropriate action and issue a recall for all cars affected. thank you. *tr

I was driving home along with my wife from running errands when my vehicle shut down while driving at 45mphs per hour. i called aaa to come and tow my vehicle. they did just that and the service-contracted towing company for aaa dropped my dodge charger rt off to the auto repair shop that i'm accustomed to going. the mechanic told me that the battery was drained heavily from the engine problem. so he took out the old battery i had and put in a new battery. once he did that he tried to get the dodge charger rt to start but there was no luck. but eventually some electrical power was restored to a level in order for a diagnostic test to be performed. once this mechanic completed the diagnostic test he told me that the codes he received are identical to the recall problems associated with the 2007 model of the dodge charger rt. he told me that the 2007 model for this vehicle had the most recall problems for the issue that i experienced which were engine problems. he said that the engine problems were the second most recalled issue after the transmission problems for this vehicle. he told me that i needed to investigate about getting a recall complaint made for this vehicle with the manufacturer (dodge), because the engine problem justified the same recall issues that previous owners had with the model and year of this vehicle. please help me because i was told that the manufacturer warranty expired. *tr

2007 dodge charger r/t was parked in driveway. upon starting the vehicle, it would not shift out of park. the vehicle had to be towed to a repair center for diagnosis; however, it seems to be a common problem for chargers. there was a recall done for 05-07 charger/magnum/chrysler 300 lx model vehicles, for an issue with the shift lever. upon calling the chrysler corp. to see if the r/t model (with an upgraded engine size) would be covered under the recall, i was informed it was not. if the recall was on the base model, it should be recalled on all, as the basics of the car structure itself, and the basic parts used, would most likely be the same. if they admit to a defective part in the lx, do right by the customers, and allow the recall to encompass all models of the vehicle. *tr

The transmission shifter interlock lever broke resulting in the inability to move the gear shift lever out of the park position. i see that other cars that are very similar to mine, if not the same car as mine, that have had this problem have had factory recalls on this...... 2005-2007 dodge charger, magnum and chrysler 300 .....but unfortunately mine doesn't and i don't know why. *tr

2007 dodge charger was stuck in park. no other problems. found out that chrysler has a defective part in these cars called the transmission shifter interlock lever recalled on some models (notification code k39) . however, the other dodge chargers are not covered under the recall even though it has the same defective part. instead, they want to charge the consumer to fix the problem although it is well known that it is a manufacturing problem. (its a cheap plastic pink release button that goes out at any given time causing the car to be stuck in park) this is a widespread, well known, highly documented defected part that the recall only covered on few models not all models. this is a cheap and unethical move on chrysler-dodge's part to have the consumer bear the cost when it is not the consumer's problem. this needs to be recalled across the board on anyand all vehicles equipped with this cheap piece of plastic. instead since my particular 2007 dodge charger is not included in the recall, i am left to pay roughly $500.00 to repair it. really disheartening and pathetic when customers want to buy american but get this as quality!

I was making a left turn into an intersection when i could not excellerate to clear the intersection because i lost power going to my transmission which almost caused me to get hit by another car approaching the intersection...totally lost power to the transmission...could not go forward or backwards was wondering if there is any sort of recall for this, i felt like i could have been killed, the car gave me no warning what so ever, no warning lights ever came on indicating there was a problem...my husband followed me to the dealer later on in the day and i was told it was some sort of valve body problem and it would cost $680.00 to fix it...never been so scared in my life not sure if i chose the right components or not but it felt like the tranny to me...i got three or four blocks from the dealer and then my service engine soon light came on...if this is not something that's on a recall then some one can be killed...i think god was just with me...the dealer also stated alot of them were coming back for some sort of vacum hose problem, well if that many is coming back why they have not had a recall not unless its not being reported...maybe i can help save the next person from a tragedy and people need to be aware

The shift assembly that allows the car to go from park to drive has broken. called dodge and asked about a recall and they stated one has been issued but not for my car due to the time frame it was built. so no recall for my car. this is a major safety hazards cause it could slip out of gear or the brakes could fell or who knows else will happen. i need this fixed and not to happy with dodge due to they wont issue a recall for my car when i can look on the internet and find other cases just like mine and same year and make and model.

On the morning of october 16, 2009 my 2007 dodge charger did not notify me of any problems and the check engine light did not go on. i started my engine and proceed to change gears and it was lock. i did know what was wrong so after out-of-pocket expenses towing to the dealer-ship the mechanic said that it is broken gear shift mechanism then mechanic said, it was not my fault. it is a internal problem and there is no reason why it broke. to make matters more difficult for me the warranty that came with the car will not even cover this part. this is a defect in the car. what if was driving and could not shift back to park or reverse would i have had to been a accident and risk my life? to correct the failure it will cost me to pay close to $400.00 to replace/repair. let me remind you guys that i did nothing wrong with the car it is something that broke by itself. i take care of my car i service when needed and i only use to commute to for errands, work and home. this is a valid part and a warranty will not cover that? please review my complaint and consider the circumstances that the gear shift mechanism is a defected part on 2007 dodge charger. *tr

We own a 2007 dodge charger. car worked great until i tried to leave out of my garage. i turned on the car and the gear shift would not move out of park. contacted the dealership and was advised that we would need to have it towed in. we have the extended 72 month, 75,0000 mile warranty and the mileage at the time was 45,000. after having our car towed, the dodge technician explained that this part is not covered under our warranty and would cost $323 with parts & labor. one person even acknowledged that this is a common problem. so i've researched this defect and have seen numerous complaints online....and i am surprised there has not been a recall. we own 2 dodge vehicles and were considering getting a durango, but if this problem isn't resolved or at least covered by our warranty, we will consider buying another make of car.

Vehicle brought home and parked on 7/17 as normal. 7/18 around 4pm attempted to start vehicle and go to local grocery store. vehicle would not come out of park. called chrysler at 1-800-853-1403, was referred to local dealership at 1-800-992-1997. was told to remove the chrome bezel around top of console and remove the package tray on the side and push the square pink tab device inward to release the shift mechanism. did not work. then was told of a service campaign on similiar vehicles but when i gave them the vin i was informed mine was not included. started using google to search for similiar incidents and found them to be numerous. seems we have a factory defect here that is known and for all intents and purposes is a time bomb waiting to nap people at its first opportunity and leave them stranded. my car has 92,000 miles on it and as far as i can tell i am lucky to have made it that far. i will be on the phone with chrysler today.. 7/19, to give them an earful of my dis satisfaction with this whole scene.

Traveling out of state and recovering from total knee replacement. 2007 dodge charger sxt was operating without incident. stopped to look at yard sale and car would not shift out of park upon return. internet research shows this to be a common problem. car left on road at this time, while searching for alternative transportation to doctor for follow-up on knee replacement surgery. the reset for the shift lock will not work at this time.

My 2007 dodge charger will not shift from park. i have read many complaints online and this should be a manufacture recall issue. this is costing me 380.00 to fix and should be a dodge liability. the company is making money had over fist for a problem created by them.

We went to the movies and when we came out the car would not come out of park. no matter what we did the gear shifter would not move. we had to get a ride home. we called the dealership and they said this is a common problem with chargers and told us how to get into the gear shift mechanism so that we could get it out of park. this happens everytime it is put in park we have to take it apart. this needs to be recalled. we cannot afford to have this fixed on the car when it is considered a common problem. dodge needs to make their customers happy, we will not be recommending this vehicle until a recall is made to correct this problem. we feel it is poor salesmanship to not disclose this at the beginning of the sale. we have been dodge owners for the last 20 years but that is due to change without further help on this problem.

I drove my car to work and parked it. when i went out to my car to go to lunch it would not shift out of park. i had to remove the upholstery around the gear shift selector to get to the plastic peice that was causing the problem. i have to use a screw driver to move the broken peice so that i can shift the car, until i have time to make it to the dealer. i have done some research and found that this is a common problem with the dodge charger.

Shifter stuck in park. car drove fine, parked it at night, the next morning the car would not move out of park. researched the problem online, found a fix (to prevent calling a tow), and drove the charger to the dealer. i expected this to be covered under a recall (#08v583000). but it was not, called chrysler and they stated that my vehicle was not covered. how many times does this have to happen before the manufacturer will do something about it? admit to the problem, pay for the repair, and consumers would be satisfied. very displeased with chrysler/dodge. other problems manufacterer will not pay for, rotor/brake pads wearing prematurely/loud squeal, drivers window leaves starch marks on glass, abs light on, engine sputters.

I drove my car to the end of my road to pick my kids up from the bus stop. once i put the car in park to allow the kids to get in it would not shift out of park. i called a tow truck and when he arrived he removed the plastic console and showed me that by pressing a hot pink lever my car would engage. he was correct and i drove my car home. i contacted the dealership and they informed me that it would cost around $350 to have fixed since my warranty ran out less than one month ago. i do not feel that i should have to pay that after reading the numerous complaints listed on here. this is obviously shoty manufacturing and should be recalled.

I own a 2007 dodge charger. bigest piece of junk ever in my drive way. i was excited when the challenger came out, my daughter would get the charger and momma would get the new challenger. i can say, that wont be happening. in the three years i've had this car, i have had to spend several hundred dollars to have the transmission fixed from leaking fluid. a part i was told that was manufactured incorrecly, but no recall, i had to purchase the fix kit myself. within 6 months from this happening, the instrument cluster went out. loosing all electronics in the car. again, no recall another $600+ out of my pocket. now just this week the pink thinky has messed up. this left me stranded in any empty parking lot at work on a friday afternoon and my husband an hour away. thank goodness the mechanic shop i go to could tell me how to overide and get me home. of course i called the dodge dealership first, but low and behold the service department could not help me. the answear, i can send a tow truck. i do know there is an override but i'm not sure how it works. really! three things right there a recall should be issued on! this car should not have the problems it does without someone taking responsibility for correcting it. mitsibishi has dodge beat by along shot! 00 galant, was traded in for the charger with 260k miles on it, never spent 1 dime that was not for routine maintence, and it still ran, drove and handled like it did the day i bought it. but i just had to have the new dodge charger, big mistake on my part! there will never be another dodge anything in my driveway. i know dodge does not care, i'm just one out of millions but they should! dodge can go bankrupt totaly, and never manufactur another thing and my work would keep right on revolving!

07 dodge charger, with automatic transmission, and console shifter. the plastic piece holding the park gear release spring breaks off and the vehicle can then not be shifted into gear. this is an obvious engineering flaw that chrysler and it's dealerships are well aware of, and choose not to address as a warranty or recall issue. the vehicle i am involved with has only 46,000 miles. the problem is widespread enough that the aftermarket parts industry, speciffically dorman , manufactures and sells a metal replacement for this obviously defective and inadequate part.

I own a 2007 dodge charger rt with a hemi. the gear shifter is stuck in park. i contacted the manufacturer and was told there is a recall for this problem on police cars but that my vin number was not part of that recall. the manufacturer offered no assistance. the mileage is 88,125. it's funny i have the same problem that was found through a defect investigation conducted on more than 20,000 police cars. the problem was corrected in those vehicles and it should be fixed. the vehicles are built the same and i understand police cars need to be programmed differently with reinforced suspension and other features to do their jobs but its the same cable on my car that dislodges that's found on an officers car. i fixed my car. the nhtsa campaign id number 08v58300 (power train:automatic transmission:lever and linkage:column shift.) *tr

2007 dodge charger. consumer writes in regards to reimbursement for repairs *tgw the consumer stated when she returned to her vehicle, she was unable to get the gear out of park. the dealer replaced the shifter and cable. the consumer also stated the rear window was damaged due to a defective heating element in the defroster grid. it occurred when the window shattered on november 18, 2011. it was the second time she used the rear window defroster since purchasing the vehicle. the first use was in 2010. she has since realized during that first use, the heating element in the defroster grid malfunctioned through overheating which caused a brown spot on the rear window. the automatic rear window defroster timer failed to take effect causing complete drainage of the battery. *jb
