Defect SummaryCertain replacement k&n fuel performance kits, p/nos. 57-1509, 57-1511, 57-1511-1, 57-1517, 57-1517-1, 57-1527, and 57-1530. also, a small percentage of these kits were sold under the mopar performance parts brand name (p/nos. p5007069 and p5007070). all kits were manufactured from april 20, 1999, through september 23, 2004. these assemblies were manufactured as replacement equipment for certain dodge pickup trucks and suvs. a small piece of material from the tube wall could be sucked into the engine throttle body, which could cause the throttle to become jammed in the open position.
Consequence SummaryA jammed open throttle could cause unintended acceleration of the vehicle, possibly resulting in a crash or increased stoping distances when braking.
Corrective SummaryK&n will provide owners with a free repair kit along with repair instructions. the recall began on april 20, 2006.

While driving down the road at approximately 40 mph, the engine of my 2000 dodge dakota truck, 4.7 liter v8, just quit. the result was a complete loss of power steering. power assist for the brakes quit after two attemps at brakeing. i coasted to the side of road and stopped. i restarted the truck and check engine light came on. the next day, the check engine was not on. a week prior to this occurrence, the power train control module was replaced under warranty. at that time, only the check engine light was coming on. it would go out in the next day or so.

Have a dodge dakota-it had a leaky head gasket; when brought in for repairs chrysler warranty will not cover because they say there is sludge in engine due to lack of oil changes; i have changed oil and i don't see how a lack of oil changes would cause a leaky head gasket anyway. paid extra for extended warranty; chrysler people very rude. i bought this truck used and have had it for 2 years, 30000 miles. had engine oil tested and anti freeze was in the oil, explained this to warranty people and they still refuse. i called them twice and they told me not to call again. i want my money back for the extended warranty and i want chrysler to know that they have rotten products and i will never own another one. *ak

After following all manufacturer suggested servicing and oil changes, my husbands '00 dodge dakota started making rattling noises in the engine. the vehicle has never been off road and has been very well taken care of. so we took it to the dealer for a diagnostic and repair. apparently the engine needs to be replaced! it only has 60,000 miles on it! i am baffled that this could even happen as most of today's engines last roughly 150,000 to 200,000 miles! none of the repairs fall under the warranty and the lemon law time period has lapsed. we are furious about this! i will write every possible source and enter complaints. we would be thrilled if others would like to join us in a class action law suit. i cannot believe that dodge does not stand behind their product. but then from what i have read, i am finding their product is not worthy of being stood behind. what a rip off!

Timing cover housing that also houses water pump and thermostat, has poor casting quality where coolant enters housing from lower radiator hose resulting in erosion of material and ultimately leaks out radiator fluid. after speaking with chrysler corporate, they are not willing to furnish pars for repair or labor to complete repairs. even with having information that an average of 24 parts per week across u.s. are being ordered and replaced they are not willing to act upon this problem. i feel that i should not be responsible for repairs that need to be made due to poor product quality for engine components that are essentially non-consumable. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 dodge dakota. immediately after purchasing the vehicle and driving approximately 55 mph, all of the instrument panel indicators illuminated. the vehicle then began to shake and the contact placed oil in the vehicle. he restarted the vehicle and it began shaking even worse. he turned off the vehicle and called the dealer. the dealer retrieved the vehicle and gave the contact his original vehicle back, but did not return his money. the current and failure mileages were 130,100.

The 2000 4 wd dodge dakota with the 4.7 engine that we own and bought new (last time...) had an oil pump failure at 60k miles. the dealer had the vehicle for a week to repair the problem citing sludge build up and lack of maintenance as the reason for the failure and the reason for the longer than quoted repair time. originally the quote was for 6-8 hours plus the cost of the pump which also came in higher than quoted, we ended up paying more than twice the quoted hours for the replacement of the pump. the sludge build up problem bothers me because it is reported all over the internet with other people having this problem in the 4.7 magnum engine. the dealer told me that the pick up tube of the pump was blocked with sludge, hence the oil pump failure. well that in it self is all understandable however, why does it make sludge...? three years prior to the failure while changing the oil i happened to have discovered a slimy sludge build up in the oil fill spout on the engine, asked the service folks at the dealer about this condition and the reply was yes, this is a known condition, come in for the retrofit to cure this moisture problem in the 4.7 engine. the service dept did indeed install this baffle and cap and i asked then if there were any other problems associated with this condition. no was the reply. so, my contention is that the aforementioned oil spout sludge problem went hand in hand with the sludge build up in the engine and caused the failure. i feel that the oil pump failure on this vehicle is not acceptable given to miles on this, a well maintained engine and i would like for chrysler to pay for the repair fully and to investigate the reliability and failure trend in this engine and sludge making tendencies leading to these failure. rad. *nm

There has been a failure of the oil pump in my 2000 dodge dakota sle with the 3.8 liter engine.... 60k miles, out of warranty...!! 60000 miles !! the dealer service dept claims that it was due to sludge build up of the pick up tube of the oil pump. i changed the oil often and use a good quality synthetic oil... no way sludge could be built up due to the oil. i have seen other instances of this engine having been known to make sludge on the internet... great...!! in a related matter, i had the oil filler tube replaced about two years ago as it was sludge up... the service fellow replaced a baffle and cap on the filler tube.. there was a considerable amount of sludge build up on the inside of the tube assembly. are the two related..? i would like for dodge to pay for the oil pump replacement if they knew before hand that this engine indeed makes sludge. *jb

I bought a 2000 dodge dakota brand new from nelson auto group in marysville, ohio. the truck is less than 3 yrs old and only has 55,000 miles on it, which 95% of them are highway, and the engine went bad. i took it back to nelson's and they said the motor might need to be replaced due to somethings they found when it was hooked up to a machine. they are not really sure what exactly is going on until they tear it apart and really looks inside. they say it will cost a couple of hundred dollars to do that, and probably a couple hundred more to fix. if i just wanted to replace the engine on a truck that is less than 3yrs old, it will cost $4,624.00. the service department said they contacted the diamler-chrysler representative and they are not willing to cover the repair or even help with the cost. i contacted the diamler-chrysler corporation myself and was told that a decision was made and they won't discuss it any further. the customer service person i spoke with (sandy norris), said she wouldn't let me speak to anyone else regarding the issue and disconnected the call. it is very troubling that we as consumer allow this type of inferior product to be sold to us. then be told that unless we buy more of a warranty they won't back anything. dt
