On 21st brakes started making a loud noise without any warning. on monday before getting it to the shop i had no brakes. brake calipers locked up and over extended l rear hardware fallen into drum and damaged shoes & contaminated brake fluid. just had the rotors and pads done less than 6 months ago.

I was having a pulsing sensation with my brakes. when i brought it in to the garage and they test drove the truck the rear tires completely seized.

Severe shaking of truck when applying the brakes and brake pedal going to the floor at times when applying the brakes. when taken to the dealer, because of an extended warranty, i was informed i would have to pay for the repair. they knew of an ongoing concern regaurding this problem and never notified owners about it. i consider it a safety hazard because the vehichle shakes so badly you have to stop braking in order to get it to quit. there are times on the highway you have to use the brake. i thought the truck was going to roll over one time. when the brake pedal went to the floori almost rearended somebody infront of me.

2005 and early 2006 dodge dakota's equipped with the 8.25 inch rear axle have a defective brake design. they utilize a single spring between the rear brake shoes which creates varying degrees of brake shuddering upon application. in addition many of these trucks are equipped with defective axles which contribute to the shuddering problem. in late 2005, dodge issued a tsb to their dealers on how to correct these problems. this was soon superceded by tsb 05-002-006. i purchased a truck with both the defective brakes and defective axles in august of 2005. i was never notified of either tsb by chrysler corporation. i now understand that since my vehicle is over one year old that i am responsible for much of the cost of repairing these factory defects to an important safety system. dodge issued two tsb's and began installing a properly designed rear brake assembly on all new dakotas built after january 2006. i believe that dodge should issue an immediate safety recall for all affected 2005 and early 2006 dakota trucks and repair them for little or no cost to the owner. this problem has undoubtably increased the risk for serious accidents due to diminished braking power and driver reaction to the pulsating pedal on hard braking. in addition, numerous owners have probably paid for unnecessary and ineffective repairs since the symptoms of this design defect mimmic those of out-of-round brake drums.

2005 dodge dakota shakes when brakes are applied above 50mph. dealer turned rotors at 9000 miles, stopped problem for a couple thousand miles. started again at about 12,000miles, had rotors turned again. still had issue at 21,000 miles, front rotors replaced.the new rotors were fine for a few thousand miles, but started shaking again at about 26,000 miles. this has been an ongoing issue, truck now has 60,000 miles (and 3rd set of rotors) and still shakes.

There's an existing tsb (chrylser/dodge 05-002-06 supersedes 05-004-05) that covers the repair of the rear axle shafts and braking system. there was a defect in the design of the parts that can cause the rear wheels not to brake and can cause the driver to lose control of the vehicle at highway speeds. dodge issued the two aforementioned tsbs to correct the issue, but it wasn't widely performed. lots of 05 and 06 dakotas with the defect are still on the road.

2005 dodge dakota with brake shuddering at highway speeds. this is a problem reported by numerous owners, as is evidenced by searching the internet. the dealerships do not take ownership of the problem even though dodge first issued a technical bulletin on this problem in november of 2005 (bulletin 05-004-05) and updated it in may 2006 (bulletin 05-002-06). in some instances, the issued bulletin requires the vehicle rear axles to to be replaced. *tr

Shutter and pulsating when applying the brakes. has been back to the dealers several times. they turned rotors and problem was not corrected. they said there was no fix at that time. truck was returned again and they replaced a rear axle, rear brakes, and re-surfaced the front rotors this corrected the problem for a short time, the truck now has less than 15000 miles on it, and is unsafe to drive at speeds over 35 mph,so it is seldom used. *tr

Rear brake juddering (shaking) causes the truck to bounce in the rear which, if happening suddenly, can cause the operator to lose control of the vehicle. the rear drums on the '05 dodge dakota are too small and heat up and warp, which causes the rear brakes to be much less effective at helping to slow the vehicle. chrysler motors released a tsb related to the rear braking system, but only owners within the first 12,000 miles of their vehicle's life are eligible for the free repair. *tr

I have a 2005 dodge dakota slt. i purchased it in 10/2005. i have had problems with this truck since i first bought it. recently i had to replaced the tire rods, sway bar and linkage, brakes, calipers, and rotors. two days after i had all of these things fixed i noticed that the truck was still shaking and making a lot of noise. when i brought the truck to dodge i was informed that the rear axle in the truck needed to be replaced. i was told that when the truck was manufactured the wrong size axle was put in the truck. this caused all kinds of problems. i was told that other parts are damaged and need to be replaced and repaired.(rear brake shoes, front disc rotors) i was told that the axle part is covered under warranty but i have to pay the $100 deductible. i was told that everything else that is damaged (due to the axle) and requires repair and replacement is not covered because it is considered normal wear and tear. i was given a quote of somewhere around $400. (depending on labor) my complaint is simple, i am being forced to pay for damaged parts on my truck that are directly caused by the manufactures error. a problem that can be proved to be the manufacturers fault. i was sold a vehicle that had the wrong axle installed. which then caused additional problems. when i bought this truck i was under the impression that the manufactures made the vehicle properly. they did not. they sold me a truck with the wrong part installed. not only is this wrong but there should be some kind of an investigation into this. if the wrong size axle is in my truck, there are other trucks that also have the wrong size axle installed. it is dangerous and suspicious. i think it is even safe to say that it is fraud too! selling trucks that have the wrong parts installed and then making profit from the repairs and replacements. sounds like fraud to me. *tr

2005 dodge dakota 4x4 v-6 purchased new. recurrent brake issues starting immediately after purchase, five visits to the dealer, each more involved then the last, culminating in having all brakes replaced (supposedly) with rear axles included (bent from factory we were informed). the violent pulsating is back again exactly the same as before and getting progressively worse. this cannot be an isolated incident as we were informed by a tech that the rear brake replacements were shipped in a vacuum sealed clamshell with carboard backing! this truck is literally getting to the point where i will not let my wife drive it for fear that she will be hurt in a panic stop situation. it is scheduled for another visit but is now past warranty... my interest is in whether there are other complaints such as this and if there is a recall pending... *jb

I have a recurring brake vibration on my 2005 dodge dakota that started at approximately 12000 miles. the dealer who is doing everything he can has replaced rear axles, drums, brake pads, front rotors, turned drums, changed wheels several times. it has been in the shop at lease 7 times and the problem still exists. i wrote letters and phoned chrysler several times and they don't seem to be interested. this is a safety issue and there will probably be a crash. *jb

At 1 k i noticed a vibration when i applied the brakes. at first i thought it was my front rotors. took it to dealer. they checked it out and they replaced the rear brake shoes. it was good until about 4500 miles. the vibrations started again. during interstate driving if i had to apply the brakes suddenly the vibration was very violent. took it back to dealer. told me that they would have to order new brake drums. at 5700 miles the new drums were installed. the vibration was still there with an additional popping sound when i applied the brakes. took it back the next day. can you believe that the new drums were warped? the dealer put the original drums back on. they contacted chrysler and they want to balance the tires. *jb

On going incident. under normal conditions with any load in truck bed it takes over 200 feet to stop from 60 mph. if you add a load or trailer or both the stopping distances increase to well over 300 feet & there was brake vibration coming from the rear. to address the vibration problem dodge came out with a technical service bulletin (tsb), #05-004-05 rev. a, to address the vibration problem. bulletin complied with which amount to refacing the front discs & rear drums,& replacement of the rear linings. at time of pick up the brake pedal had to be pumped 2 or more times to obtain braking action. upon re-inspection by the dealer they found that one of the automatic adjuster lock down spring had become loose. re-attached, it solved the pumping of the brake pedal going to the floor. however, the once firm brake pedal is now too soft and no amount of pumping will provide a firm feel. the dealer tried to call dodge technical services. they advised that could not find an answer or reason for the problem. at the present time i'm having to deal with this problem as the work was done while i was on a trip to illinois and i live in georgia. my local dealer here in georgia is not an acceptable. the dealer in illinois is well aware of the problem & we will going there in late july & they will be checking out the problem. i contacted dodge customer services & was advised we do not have any technical information here & are quite unconcerned about the whole problem & cannot help you. brief history; prior to the 2005 introduction of the revised/updated 2005 dakota the previous models had 4 wheel disc brakes that were not causing any problems. for 2005 dodge changed from the 4 wheel discs to front discs & rear drums. i will be moving from georgia to illinois in the near future & have already made six trips towing a 5' x 8 u-haul trailer and have experienced many occasions that the factory installed brakes fade excessively to almost no brakes. *nm

My 2005 dodge dakota 4 door pickup started to shimmy very bad and i had a hard time controlling the truck while braking on steep downhill highways in virginia and west virginia. i told the dealership when they resurfaced the rotors that they would not last through virginia and west virginia. my truck only had 9,400 miles on it. this is the second problem i have had with the braking system on my truck. if i have not had this problem in the past i could have had a serious accident on a 4 lane highway at highway speeds on these steep grades. resurfacing the rotors or drums is not the solution, but is going to make the problem more serious due to the fact that when these parts are resurfaced they take away metal from the rotors or drums which makes these parts heat up even faster in this situation. these parts need to be replaces. i would have thought that the braking system on a new truck would be taken more serious than just resurfacing the rotors. but i guess dodge is trying to repair the brakes the cheap way, until someone gets hurt or killed due to the brakes. then dodge will maybe take a look at this problem. *jb

2005 dodge dakota tilt steering does not work, brakes shuddered. *ts ***no answer required*** it was determined that the problem was not the brake but that the rear axle had been milled incorrectly causing the brakes to shudder and vibrate. the consumer was involved in an accident in which the brakes shuddered and locked up. as a result he rear ended another vehicle. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and the brakes were checked. neither the technician nor the computer found any problems with the brakes. the consumer traded the vehicle in for another 2005 dodge dakota. *nm

When braking a highway speeds, the braking system has a severe shutter. i have taken it to the dealership and they could not find any issues. they did, however, turn the front rotors. the problem is in the rear brakes. i can tell when the front has a problem. it is a different feel. my 2001 dakota had exactly the same issue and they could never find a problem with it either. the dealership says it is normal. the anti-lock brakes in the rear are what causes the problem. they know of no way to fix it. i put in the number of failures that there have been 481 failures, since that is how long i have had the vehicle and it occurs daily. it was extremely rare for it to happen until it had about 15,000 mi. on it and i can work the brakes and get it to stop if i don't have to stop fast. i had the worst issue this morning coming to work. i had a vehicle run a stop sign and i had to do a panic stop from 65 mph and the truck shook so bad i did not think it was going to stop. i have just gotten frustrated and lived with this problem, since i get told it is just normal anti-lock brakes............not likely!!!!! also, i noticed there is a daimler/chrysler service bulletin on this problem. it is #0500405 dated 05/10/2006. since my last experience with the dealership, i have just stayed away, so i have not been told about this service bulletin. *tr

Purchased my new dodge quad-cab dakota in aug 2005. immediately noticed the truck would shake when brakes were applied, especially at about 50 mph. some new vehicles can have brake rotor and drum rust and i assumed that that may have been the problem. but after 3000 miles on vehicle, i took it to the local dodge dealer to have them diagnose the problem. i had waited to take it to the shop so the oil could be changed at the same time. i also wanted to allow ample time to wear-in the new shoes and rotors etc. dealer ordered new front brake rotors on nov 8 2005 and rotors were replaced on nov 22 2005 with truck showing about 3600 miles on odometer. dealer informed me when i picked up the truck that the problem was not yet fixed and that rear brake parts were being ordered. the shimmy and shake when braking at around 50 mph is serious and would cause safety concerns under certain conditions such as slick or rough roads, as applying brakes causes a bouncing sensation as if you were traveling on a washboard road (series of small humps or bumps). it is upsetting to me that this new vehicle is sold with the factory being aware that this problems exists on these vehicles. it is fraudulent to sell a defective vehicle such as this and knowing the problem exists. unsafe while braking at moderate speeds. *nm

I own a 2005 dodge dakota which i purchased in august. within the last two weeks, i've experienced severe brake shutter. when this happens, the vehicle does not feel safe. i brought the vehicle to the dealer i bought it from for service on the brakes. i received a call from the service advisor the same day stating that they cannot do anything to fix the brake problem. he also stated that dodge is aware of this problem and is working on a kit to remedy it. this statement leaded me to research who else may be experiencing the same problem. to my surprise i found that this problem has been known, by dodge, for at least six months. they have a tsb #05-004-05 for this problem. i have read many complaints by other dakota owners about their frustration with resolving the brake problem. they've had their trucks in the shop multiple times for the same problem with no resolution. i understand their frustration. when you experience the shutter when applying the brakes, it is frightening. vehicles should not make you feel unsafe, especially a new one. why can't dodge remedy this problem and why if they have known of this problem, why did they not inform me of this when i bought this truck two months ago? i do not feel safe driving this vehicle and all the dealer can do is let me know when dodge has issued a kit to fix the problem. so much for customer care! *nm

Purchased 2005 dakota quad cab on 9/30/05. immediately noticed pulsating or shuddering of the brakes when applied at higher rates of speed & when braking on an incline. visited dealership on 10/13/05 & rear drums were turned. visited dealership again on 10/21/05 with the same problem. they found no problem. brakes progressively worsened & returned again to dealership on 11/15/05. dealership ordered parts & we returned to dealership on 12/14/05 & rear brake shoes were replaced. several months passed & brake shuddering returned again. visited dealership again with same complaint on 9/19/06 & the dealer replaced rear brake shoes, brake drums, & rotors. not two months later, the same braking problem returned. after taking the truck in to the dealership on 5 separate occassions without a resolve, we filed for our rights under the florida lemon law. daimler chrysler set up an appt with dealership to have technician look at our truck. they found nothing wrong with our truck other than a bad tire. the technician did not drive the truck under the conditions that i described to them. we took the truck to sears to have the tires looked at & there indeed was a flat spot on the right front tire. i questioned why there would be a flat spot on a tire that had only 24k on it without any explanation. we had the tire replaced & also had the front end aligned. in the meantime the brake pulsation only continues to get worse. i have called daimler chrysler again to request another review of our case & we now have to take the truck back to the dealership & this time stay with the tech and drive with them to identify the pulsating brakes. we are trying to be patient with the process but it is getting very trying. there is definitely something defective with the engineering of this make and model of truck & it is time that chrysler take responsiblity for it. i only hope that they correct the situation before someone gets killed because of it.

I have only had this truck for 2 and half months, only 3800 miles on it. i noticed it was shaking real bad when applying the brakes. i took it into the shop and they had it for 4 days and they told me that they had a tsb that the rear axles and drums needed to be replaced. so they did that and gave it back to me and i had to take it back the same day, because they did not fix it. so.. then they had it for 9 days and i had told them that i was getting real upset about this and the manager look me in my face and asked me what was i going to do about it. you have real good people selling your trucks. but any way. when i was finally called 9 days later, they told me that dodge had to re design the rear plate. there has been a lot of things done to these trucks and nothing is fixing them. look at how many people are having trouble. i also call chrsyler and they never returned my call...i called twice. they refused a loaner or a rental. told me i had to drive it the way it is...maybe until sometime in november...who knows...i don't feel safe driving this truck...i will not put my kids in this truck. i will never deal with waldorf dodge again and i will never buy a dodge again. so much for the consumer there..we have to deal with there mistakes....someone help.........oh yeah i asked for them to buy the truck back and they told me that first they have to may sure it can be fixed so that would beable to resell it...now what kind of service is that....have had it in the shop 2 times now

The brakes shake horribly and have since about a 11,000 miles, the dealership refuses to do anything about, replaced a faulty caliper i ordered in january in july. i believe the reason i was not able to stop fast enough in the accident in october was because the brakes failed to grab completely. i would not be such a big deal my this dodge dealer treats me as an ignoramus, they did offer to upgrade my brakes for only 250 a side, which seems silly since it was still under warranty at the time. it still has the $100 ded warranty for 100000 miles. *jb

I had been noticing some major pulsating (to the point i thought i was loosing a tire) in the front end of my 05 dodge dakota when i stepped on the front brake so i had the brakes looked at by meineke muffler. they showed me how the dust boot on the calipers were deteriorating and that the rotors were turning blue from over-heating. they suggested i contact dodge to see if there were any recalls or if it was covered by my extended warranty. my truck has 24k miles on it. i contacted dodge regarding the warranty and they said that only the calipers would be covered even though the defective calipers caused the premature wearing of the rotors and brake pads. the brake pads still had at least 50% wear on them. my truck is currently at stevens dodge in milford ct. tomorrow will be 2 weeks since i brought it there and supposedly they are still waiting for the parts to come in. according to their service dept the parts are not on back order but they still aren't in. this truck is supposed to be able to tow up to 7,000 pounds but with the brakes failing after only 24k of normal driving (mostly highway miles) i can only imagine what might have happened if i towed things with it regularly. *tr

I bought a 2005 dodge dakota on feb of 2005. from the very start i had a bad vibration in the front end of the vehicle under heavy braking. we first took the vehicle after 2000 miles to have it look at. dodge could not fix the problem so i took it back another 7 times before i asked for replacement under the ohio lemon laws. dodge contacted me in early october wanting to look at the truck again but before i could bring it back in, i got in a accident that was a direct result of the non working brakes. after the accident, which put a women in the hospital, my wife took the truck back to get fixed and the dealer threw her out. we later learned that dodge, during some recall work, notified it's dealer network not to do any more work on this vehicles brakes. this forced us to go hire a lawyer to sue for compensation. all along i was still driving this dangerous vehicle. i got a call from the lawyers on may 30 telling me that i should contact the dealer and sell the vehicle back. i did just that, the dealer lied to me, told me he did not have the paperwork yet, which he did, and not to call him. he said that he would contact me when he recieved the paperwork. in the meantime my wife got in a accident june 14, again because of the faulty brakes and put another person in the hospital. now the lawyers want me to fix the truck again and hurry up and sell it back to dodge, so they can get their money. they said that i should not pursue anything else. dodge should not be able to trample over me like this. this isn't right somebody should be out there protecting the rights of the average person. do i have any recourse? *jb

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 dodge dakota. while driving approximately 15 mph downhill with the brake pedal depressed, the vehicle shook violently. she pumped the brakes to relieve some of the shaking. the dealer repaired the vehicle the following day per the technical service bulletin. the repair consisted of resurfacing the brakes and drums, and the brake and brake pads were replaced. after a few months, the failure recurred. the manufacturer was notified and stated that the failure was not related to a recall; however, it was a safety concern. they were unable to assist. the current mileage was 66,000 and failure mileage was 10,000.

At 470 miles, my 2005 dodge dakota club cab developed a bad shimmy/vibration whenever the brakes were applied. the dealers service department determined that the rear brake drums were defective. they replaced them under warranty and several days later the problem returned. they machined the rear drums and put them back on the vehicle. at 1472 miles i had to return to the dealer again. the same vibration upon application of the brakes had returned, only worse. they confirmed the problem and machined the drums one last time. this fix only worked for a few more days. the shimmy/vibration was gone, only to be replaced by a loud thumping noise from the rear end whenever brakes were applied. at this time, the vehicle had just over 1700 miles on it. i returned to the service department on 13 september 2005 and the service team made 6 more attempts to remedy the problem, including brand new drums, machining of same and trying drums from another 2005 dakota in their inventory. nothing worked. the problem is worse than ever. they had the vehicle for 10 days and could not fix it! it was returned to me still defective on 22 september 2005. i sent a certified letter to daimler chrysler customer center on 23 september 2005 notifying them of my intent to invoke my rights under alabama lemon law section 8-20a. i want a full refund. this is ridiculous! *jb

We bought a new 2005 dodge dakota quad cab v-6 from magnussens in aburn california. when parking from our return trip 200 miles away we noticed a rubbing noise, almost as if the tires are rubbing. made an appointment with the dodge dealership in our area for july 19th. they inspected the truck and said that the serpentine belt and tensioner would have to be replaced. this, if not fixed could cause lose of power steering, ac etc. as stated in the owners manually. however, they could not perform the work until they called chrysler corp and get authorization. this took 1 week. i called magnussens of auburn to let them know. did not get a follow up. didn't even get the report card on the business the were so anxious for us to get and fill out regarding there service. sport chrysler repaired the truck. also at this time the brake lines were adjusted the brake hoses were extremely tight, this could cause the brake lines to abrupt. see other complaint regarding rotors, and suspension. *** wc
