I was driving down the highway when the vehicle powered down without notice. i lost my power steering and the powered brakes. it would this randomly without any warning. turns out it was the computer, and the mechanic said that dodge is notorious for the computer failing. the computer is very close to the engine, and this causes the board to warp and connections to break. these cars need to be recalled, and this issue needs to be addressed, or it will get someone killed.

While driving on a highway at speeds of 60-65 mph, with my child, my vehicle's engine died without warning, without indications of imminent failure, no symptons or signs of stress. the dash lights and alarms did not send notification until i was already coasting down the side of the emergency lane. while trying to steer the suddenly nonpowered steering wheel thru traffic i began to worry if we were going to make it to the side without hurting anyone or damaging any vehicles. at the time i was just thankful to have made it home with my child in one piece but soon i realized this story could have had a much worse outcome. the vehicle's ecm was faulty and resulted in an electrical issue that caused the entire system to temporarily shutdown without notice.

I was driving on the highway at 65mph, and the vehicle shut off completely. lost power steering, power brakes, everything. had 3 small children in the car and had to with all my power (i am 5'9 235 lbs) navigate the vehicle to the side of the road. i have found this is extremely common problem with this vehicle. many of the posts state is a manufacturing flaw of where the pcm is placed in the engine.

Vehical dies at stop light. i push it to the side of the road to invaestigate. vehical engine cranks but doesnt fire. on odometer display it says no bus. fuel pump not coming on when ignition is turned on . i walk to parts store and buy fuel pump relay ,or circiut breaker. put it in , fuel pump comes on engine starts . wife is driving it two days later . vehical dies in busy intersection . nice people push her off the road way. she calls me , i tell her to take circiut breaker to parts store and get new one. she replaces breaker ,shes on the road again. so now i do some reading find out circiut breakers just get hot stop working , cool down and work again. so some thing is drawing too much current. replace the fuel pump and filter , big pain in the you know what. vehical dies two days later. nice man pulls me off the road. i leave vehicle sit for an hour . vehicle starts back up. so i just go on vehicle dies on me all the time. fast food lines ,busy intersections, it dies every where , every temp. i dont let mommy drive it anymore. i dont trust it to carry my baby anymore. i cant sell it . i have read about people having same exact problems . they say replace fuel pump ,did it. replace computer , did that. sevaral years ago dealer ship put new computer in cost me $1200. all for a problem simalar to this one. vehicle died at stop lights , but started up right away. i have replaced so many parts , every thing is new. i cant trust it . its very unsafe . i cant knowingly sell it to some body. thanks dodge.

I was pulling a boat to the lake when the vehicle just cut off , i lost all power such as power steering ,power brakes .this could have cause a major accident ! once i got on the side of the road and opened the hood i moved around the wires on the computer , i heard the fuel pump engauge and then i started it . it ran a few minuites and did it again ! both times their was a bus error on the odometer . as i have studied this problem ,computers (pcm) are overheating and causing connection problems . this is going to cause people to have accidents and get people killed ! dodge needs to fix this problem ! there are many !

When driving at highway speeds the engine will suddenly shut off losing power steering and brakes. after sitting for 10 to 30 minutes it will restart and run for an additional distance until shutting off and repeating the same symptoms again. it will sometimes perform normally for days until once again quitting for no reason. multiple components have been replaced without correcting the problem. dodge denies there being any problems with the vehicle but there are many instances of the same condition being reported on internet sites from around the country.

My durango randomly dies during operation and on several occasions has endangered lifes of civilians.
05/18/2011173000
This has happened on numerous occasions. while driving, especially in extremely hot or extremely cool situations, the vehicle engine shuts down unexpectedly. first symptom - check engine light. second symptom (3 seconds later) - fuel gauge from half full to empty. third symptom (immediate) - low fuel warning light. fourth symptom (2 seconds later) - low fuel warning light. fifth symptom - engine shut down at highway speed. completely lost vehicle control. no power steering, no power brakes. muscled car to the side of the road and barely avoided an accident. could have been easily killed. problem appears pcm-related, but from what i've read, numerous people have paid $1,000 for a new pcm only to have the same results. this is a serious problem and has been reported thousands of times on the internet. i hope somebody does something with dodge on this before a child is killed when the truck dies at highway speed.

Warm weather the engine quits. 3 time within two weeks driving 65-70 mph on highway while pulling a boat all 3 times. the problem is the pcm on the passengers side of the engine compartment. gets to hot and shuts the engine down. no brakes, no steering! this problem is documented in dodge forums thousands of times with everyone quoting the exact same issues with nothing being done nor any fixes that will work.

1999 dodge durango shuts down, electronically, while driving in warm/hot weather. this is directly related to the pcm and/or it's location. very dangerous, even life threatening if on the freeway. dodge does not recognize the problem, or safety issue, so forums and consumers are left to resolve this very huge problem. only seems to exist on dodge durango's with the years 1999 and 2000. problem can be resolved, for freeway use, with modifications to the vehicle; a 3-4 inch tube from the grill to the pcm. no fix, so far, for local use on hot days.

I own a dodge durango that is the worst vehicle i have ever purchased. it suffers from shut off when it wants to syndrome and the company won't even acknowledge that the problem exists even though it is the number one complaint about this particular model on the internet durango sites. to make matters worse they don't even know what causes it to do that therefore making repairing the vehicle impossible. it is basically a death trap as when the engine shuts off so does the power steering and the brakes!!! the odometer reads

Same as all the others, my dodge durango gets hot then shuts down. as it stalls, if you look at the digital odometer it will read no bus and the digital thermostat reads 141 degrees. after sitting anywhere between 5 and 30 minutes it restarts and runs fine for a while before doing it again. after much research i found it was the computer needed to be replaced. there's a company out in florida that will send you a remanufactured one for about $500 and it's 4 bolts to change out. come on dodge, why can't you fix this mess?????

I own a 99 dodge durango, 5.9 liter, the events to the failure were stalling while driving on freeway, at stop, in intersections, without warning. when attempting to restart, dash cluster would not function, read no bus on odometer, and show i had no fuel on gas guage. also when it would stall i would lose brakes and power steering, making it hard to get out of the way of traffic or move to the side of the road. the first time it happened i had my wife and 2 infants with me on the freeway doing 65 in the middle lane. not only unexpected, extremely dangerous. since then i will not allow my family in this car. things that were done to correct the issue were fuel pump, cap and rotor, plugs, wires, crank sensor, and pcm. i have reciepts for all work and parts. old pcm not available due to core.

There was no warning signs leading up to the problem. my 99 dodge durango has shut down on me twice in the past week or so. i have been to many websites and heard from many that this is a common problem with this car. no one really knows what is wrong. i have heard that the ecu is too close to the engine's heat and cause's it or the wires to short out especially in the summer heat. one it shuts off it will start again but it seems it needs a bit to cool down. i have not done anything to fix it yet cause i hear there is no solution. i have purchased some heat shielding tape and sheets to put around it but have not received them in the mail so have not tried it yet.

1999 dodge durango - ingine stalls during driving, relates to computer overheating. i had the computer replaced but the problem returns. vehicle very difficult to stop or turn d/t power loss. last occured in oncoming traffic lane while turning. computer returns no codes but odometer displays no bus. engine compartment is way too hot for this component so i do not expect anything to work except re-routing the wiring and mounting the computer outside the engine compartment. i have tried improved air flow and insulation but it simply gets too hot. i cannot stress the level of risk this problem presents. had this occured while i was pulling a trailer over one of my usual camping routes i would not be reporting this nor would anyone else in the vehicle because losing the engine on a canyon edge would make the vehicle impossible to stop. i refuse to drive the vehicle as this has now happened even on quick trips on slow flat roads. this failure has occured 5 times now and is predictable. hot weather, 5-15 minutes of driving, all components hot in engine compartment, let it all cool down and vehicle can re-start. odometer blinks 4 times and returns no bus fault. computer will not return a code and so is not covered under its warranty for replacement. this is not a question of if but when a class 1 mishap will occur.

Dodge durango 1999 engine just dies while driving gauges drop engine stalls, then hold on and pray that nobody hits you, i have had the pcm replaced at the dealer $850.00 only for it to start the same problem 5 weeks later, i have taken it back to the dealer they say it shows no error and without it being down they are unable to test any further. this is very dangerous. i have spent over $1300.00 and many hours on the side of the road. this needs to be addressed by dodge! i have been lucky to avoid numerous accidents.

The dodge durango 1999, stalls completely with no warning or reason. after a brief period of time (5 minutes) it runs again. there is no apparent problem when scanned or is serviced. the inminent danger is that when it stalls everything locks and if you are driving on a highway it is potential risk to the driver and the passengers.
05/20/2010173000
My 1999 dodge durango turns off anytime the tempature gets above 85f. this happens in stop and go traffic and even driving at 70 mph. when this happens you loose all control of the car. i have replaced the pcm but it still keeps happening. one day someone will rear end me and my children.

Owner of dodge durango 2 weeks ago my car stopped all of a sudden on the highway, i waited at least 15 minutes thereafter car started again. truck allowed me to make close to my home, before stopping again. although this time i waited 30 minutes before vehicle would started again. i finally arrived home parked the vehicle in the driveway. next morning truck started but could not make it out of my driveway, it continue to shut down. i decided to have it towed. repair station installed fuel pump, partial injection cleaning and idle, i drove the truck for 1 hour parked in the driveway, woke up next morning truck would not start, few minutes later started up again, i took truck to repair shop but they were unable to id any problems.thereafter, truck stopped again, i decided to tow to dealership whom replaced crankshaft sensor, tune up and full injection cleaning for 950.00 but truck still continues to stop, now dealer tech has stated pcm needs to be replaced which will cost 800.00 this is totally insane, based on all the $ spend, it could have been a down payment on another truck. dodge daimer chrysler should be held responsible for all repairs and through investigation, especially since no one can identify root cause, also not to mention occurences are jeopardizing people lives due to the vehicles continues to cease working at any given time.

Back in the summer of 2008 i was having issues with my 1999 dodge durango shuting off for no reason. i did some online searching and found the pcm,ecm unit was over heating, after cooling it with an ice pack for 5 minutes the car would start again. after 3 months i finally bought i rebuilt pcm on ebay, they programmed the unit for my car and it ran better then ever. well today 6/4/2010 don't you know it did it again but this time the unit is completely dead, i still have the old unit and popped that in and wow it started. we need to fight dodge on this to relocate the pcm on the firewall near the battery where it stays cool. all the heat from the engine is blown to that side of the car causing this issue. how to do we get dodge to fix this like others have said someone will get hurt and i hate to trash a car with only 74,000 miles on it.

I purchased a 1999 dodge durango and the vechile shuts off when driving without notice. it is unsafe and dangerous. this happens everytime the vechile is driven. i have invested thousands of dollars to fix and not even the dealer can fix. i have replaced the pcm, sensors, fuel pump to no avail. the vechile is just sitting in my driveway, i cant do anything with it.

Tl* the contact owns a 1999 dodge durango. the contact stated while driving at speeds of 45 mph, the vehicle began to idle roughly. the warning gauges began to fluctuate sporadically and the vehicle then stalled. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who was unable to duplicate the failure but advised the malfunction may have potentially been caused by a computer malfunction. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileages were 167,000.
04/15/2005110000
Pcm is located on the right fender well. thie radiator fan also blows onto the right fender. the extreme heat causes the printed circut board inside the pcm to warp when it gets hot and causes the engine too stall. once the printed circut board cools and flatten outs it runs fine until it gets so hot that it warps again. i was able to duplicate this problem by using a blow dryer on the pcm. when it got hot the engine stalled. as soon as it cooled it restarted. i resolved the issue by covering the pcm with a heat deflecting insulation wrap and by also running an air duct from the grill directly to the pcm. the problem could be solved by creating some electrical pigtails that would allow you to relocate the pcm to the left fender away from the direction of the radiator fan heat.

1999 dodge durango completely shuts down without warning. this seems to happen when the vehicle has warmed up. we replaced the crank position sensor, still the same problem. reasearch and diagnostics point to the pcm module. there are 94 other complains at the following site: http://www.carcomplaints.com/dodge/durango/1999/electrical/vehicle_shuts_down_without_warning.shtml this is a huge safety issue, the truck completely shuts down, if this is not addressed someone is going to get serisouly injured or killed, i am afraid to put my children in this vehicle now. its impossible to predict when it will happen, at 55 on the highway it could be a life and death situation. please do the research ont his problem, this should be a recall, someone is going to get hurt, just from the brief amount of time i have researched i have found an abundance of complaints for the same problem.

1999 dodge durango slt 8cyl 5.9l automatic- vehicle died without warning -replaced battery - died again -replaced battery - checked alternator - checked pcm - check gauges light coming on as battery voltage too low - air bag light intermittently turns on while driving, cycling the beeping on and off, randomly. frustrated as have been to several mechanics and no one seems to know how to fix these issues. want to be sure airbag isn't going to randomly activate. concerned with vehicle suddenly turning off while on highway. *tr

Same problem as hundreds of others, 1999 durango shuts off, has been doing it for about 1 month now. no particular rhyme or reason as to when it is going to happen, as it will do it while sitting still or going 55 mph. getting the no bus reading in odometer, usually restarts within several minutes. i can not let my wife or teenage son drive this vehicle. have replaced battery cables, disconnected electrical connections going into ecm and cleaned, and made sure same connections are tight. will probably end up replacing ecm, but not too confident about the outcome. now that winter is coming, this may get scary !!! *tr

Durango shut off without warning, while driving, multiple times. once shut off on freeway in heavy traffic. power steering did not work. could not turn away from other vehicles. only thing that worked was the brakes. shut off at least 4 or 5 other times in parking lots, usually after initial start. sometimes started right back up, sometimes took up to 30 minutes to start again. battery had good charge. no delay to start, just shuts off without warning. we do not drive it on the freeway anymore for fear it will shut off and cause an accident. timing for the failure is unpredictable. husband tried to replay the circumstances and make it shut off, didn't shut off. blinkers work intermittently. have not tried repairing it yet. did some research online, seems many people have this same problem with the same vehicle and none of the usual remedies work. i am planning to take it to the dealership, but am hesitant to waste money on something they don't know how to fix. diagnostic tests for others have been negative. this problem has occurred several times and began about 6 months ago. freeway incident was around may this year. *tr

99 dodge durango slt 5.9l engine. after purchasing this car in feb. 2008, while i was driving it just shut down. no warning was given. this started happening several times a day while i drove it. i had to have it towed in by the man who i was buying it from to go to the mechanics. they tried numerous times to find the issue. finally after dealing with not having the car on & off for three months, i found out that others got the same error code i did in the odometer window which said, no bus. it was then towed again, and i wrote the mechanic a note telling them that i found out that others had the same issue. thousands & thousands. their car shut down at any moment. the last time my car shut down on me was while i was on the interstate going 65 mph. it just shut down completely, no warning. we were almost in a near fatal accident. thankfully the car swerved and some people stopped and helped me push it off to the median. once at the mechanics, i received a call stating it was in fact the pcm, it was replaced and then the car did not do this any longer. that is a expensive part to replace. now again one year later this same car is at the mechanics again for the pcm being replaced. i just handed them $450 ( total $800) to get it. he had my car for 6 weeks before determining that the pcm had failed once again on this car. dodge needs to take responsibility for this. i do not understand why they would dismiss such a road hazard. while a great car in looks, it is not safe on the road. we need something done about this. i have children who ride in this car and can't afford to buy a new car at any moment. they need to recall the 1999 dodge durangos and reimburse those of us who have had to replace this pcm causing the car to shut down. there are too many people out there with the exact same problem for this to be continued to be ignored by dodge. sabrina fowler *tr

I have a 1999 dodge durango which has stalled while driving numerous times. the first time i was in stop and go traffic and it died. 3 minutes later it started back up and ran fine. then, a month later while traveling 65mph on the freeway it died again. luckily i was in the right lane and was able to coast to the shoulder lane. after 10 minutes it started up again and ran fine. a week later i was driving it and it suddenly died again. this time it took over 2 hours to get it started again. it died again 10 minutes later. another 15 minutes to get it started again and it died pulling in to my driveway. i am afraid to drive this vehicle, and don't know what to do to fix it. i was told by a mechanic it might be the fuel filter, and when i looked for the part online, i came across a website with hundreds of consumer complaints for the same problem. people are afraid to drive this vehicle since it is a safety issue that it will just die unexpectedly irregardless of where you are driving it or how fast or slow it's going. diagnostic tests reveal no error codes, people are being told to try changing out several different parts on the vehicle, at great cost, with no consistent success at solving this problem. i cannot afford to spend money guessing what the problem may be, and it seems dodge is well aware of this problem with 1998-99 dodge durangos across the country. all seem to think it is a manufacturer defect in design of this vehicle, as the pcm is located in a very high heat location under the hood which seems to fry the pcm as well as numerous other parts it is running in conjunction with. link to site with complaints listed: http://www.carcomplaints.com/dodge/durango/1999/electrical/vehicle_shuts_down_without_warning.shtml. *tr

Http://www.automotiveforums.com/t91464.html i have a '99 durango with ~45000 miles. recently it has been breaking down on me. i feel it lose power until it dies all together. after about 20 minutes it will start again. this has happened 5 times. when it happened today, i was going about 30 mph, when i felt it lose power. the speedometer went to '0 - the 'check engine light came on', the 'fuel pump' light came on (like it does when you run out of gas), then i had this odd message on the odometer that said no bus. this time i had it towed to pep boys w/o trying to crank it with the hopes they can get a code. i told them about the no bus message but they did not seem to know anything about it. i have found this mentioned on a few bulletins boards but not with much info. i think perhaps a service bulletin from dodge said something about this. does anyone have any ideas as to what no bus' means and perhaps if this is the cause of me breaking down. what can i do to get it fixed ? please help. .thanks! *tr

I purchased the 1999 dodge durango 2/8/09. the truck ran good for one week. then it would just stall with no warning and a no bus error would flash on the odometer. after about 20 minutes the truck would start back up. but that is unacceptable. it has been stalling every week since may 12, 2009. it quit 8/11/09 and it was stuck in traffic with no where to go. it took one hour and 15 minutes for the truck to start back up. dodge needs to be held accountable for this issue. if you just take 3 minutes and google no bus signal on odometer of 1999 dodge durango you'll spend the next 3 days reading all the complaints with no solution to fixing the problem. i am a single parent and i depend on this vehicle to get back and forth to work and the doctors. i have had the diagnostics run on the truck and it doesn't even read. they don't know about it unless they're in the truck with you when it happens or there within 15 mins of the truck stopping. all this money for cash for clunkers and couldn't even drive it to a car lot if i wanted to. it wouldn't start. i am very upset and angry and feel that dodge has dodged another bullet. never will i buy a car from dodge/chrysler/jeep again, because they are not being responsible. believe me, they are aware of the issue. just don't give a *^$! *tr

1999 dodge durango faulty electrical/computer operations. vehicle intermittently stalls while driving. vehicle has stalled when starting from a stop (0-5mph), at cruising speeds (55mph) or randomly while driving in the city (25-3mph). replaced pcm and issue subsided for 2 years only to begin again. dealership stated the recurrence was due to faulty abs control unit, replaced in aug '09, only to have same issue occur again 2 days after retrieving the vehicle. previously car would restart after engine had time to cool down. since pcm was replaced, issue has become twofold - intermittent stalling and intermittent not starting. drove the car to school, returned home, car sat for 1 hr, go to leave, car wont start. engine cranks, plenty of battery (all electrical works) but engine wont turn over. since april, this exact same scenario has occurred half dozen times - after driving the car for some period of time and then letting it sit, only to leave and it will not start - wait for 30min-90min, and car starts. the last two times this occurred, waited for more than 2 hours and car wouldn't start so had the vehicle towed to dealership. this appears to be a common complaint with this make/model and yet manufacturer continues to turn a blind eye to consumers as well as turning their backs on the dealerships. i have been the sole owner of this vehicle and purchased it new to my specifications (internet order) and have followed the scheduled service/maintenance to the letter. 11 year old vehicle in nov, with 151,000 miles - they don't make them like the used to. *tr

I bought my durango last year and it has left me and my kids stranded on road many times in very dangerous situations because of no shoulder to pull out of way of other drivers, it shuts down without warning, loses all power, restarts in 1-30 minutes but will shut down again within a few miles especially on hot days. first replaced fuel pump then relay switches and problem still continues, nothing ever shows on the diagnostics. three mechanics have been unable to figure it out but i still had to pay for their time so here i am with only one vehicle that i still owe money for and can't depend on it to get me anywhere. i drive everyday in fear that my car is going to stall and get me or my kids killed. *tr

I was on the highway and my vehicle shut down. when this happened i was doing 65 m.p.h. and lost control of the steering and braking which almost resulted in a crash with my toddler in the vehicle. i finally got some help from a passer by to get it off of the road and let the pcm cool down and it started again. this happens whenever it is above 70 degrees out side. i have contacted dodge and they will not warranty this problem nor recall it. we need help. i have found over one hundred cases of this happening and dodge will do nothing about it. please help before some one gets killed if they haven't already this is serious. a new p.c.m. cost between 800.00 and 1200.00 dollars and the same thing keeps happening. the other thing on the 1998 and 1999 durango is the oil pump screens are to small and keeps ca]using engine failure in the same manner as the problem above. please investigate you are the only ones that can save a life. thank you. *tr

My vehicle for many weeks would shut down while driving especially on hot days with no warning. gauges would freeze. i would stop my vehicle and either have to wait 20 mins. the vehicle would go till died again, often the next stop, or braking during a turn. almost impossible to brake or steer even driving 55mph. almost causing accidents. my mechanic said it was the computer, the computer had no history, take it to a dealer. during that weekend while driving about 10 miles died 5 times in 100+ temp police stopped to help. sent me to hospital with heat exhaustion and temp of 102.9. next morning drove vehicle to dealer. dealer diagnosed as fuel pump. i paid for repair and drove off with vehicle. i drove less than 3 miles and 2 more times the vehicle died. dealer sent tow truck. next mourning dealer claim car is fine running 5 hours in shop. i insisted take on road in heat. when shut hood died. dealer npw calling pcm bad not computer. i was told had to pay for pcm as well that fuel pump was bad anyway. i asked for old parts was told do not return core parts? i had asked for replaced part return. i paid and left. after contacting owner of dealership next day. one week later refunded for fuel pump not pcm. *tr

While returning home from a family vacation, my 1999 dodge durango lost completely lost power and shut down. luckily i was able to pull off the road. after several minutes of trying to start the car it started up. a few minutes later it shut down again. again, after a few minutes it started and i was able to drive the last 20 miles to get home. after unloading the car, i tried to start the car with no luck. i noticed the odometer display read no bus . i told this to the mechanic and he thought the crank sensor was the problem. it still shuts down after the repair. the car has shut down a total of 4 times and i still haven't found the repair solution. i think it is the computer. it gets too hot and shuts the car down. this is extremely dangerous and i can't believe dodge hasn't done a recall on this before now. *tr

We recently purchased a 1999 dodge durango slt from a private party. this is a well maintained vehicle and has no history of problems. within a few days of having this vehicle it began to stall for no apparent reason. this would be at 65 mph or stopped. if you wait 5-20 min it will restart. we have had this car looked at and have replaced the crank sensor to no avail. while doing an internet search it appears this is not a new problem and many other owners are experiencing it as well. the mechanics get no code from the stall and no one can pinpoint the problem. we are frustrated and pretty unhappy to find out this is a recurring problem with this vehicle. this is very dangerous as everything locks up when it stalls. *jb

My 1999 dodge durango stalled on the highway for the fifth time today. after the first two stalls i took it to a garage. they told me they could not get a code off of the computer and it could be one of three things, the security cutoff, the ecm or the fuel pump. they replaced the security cutoff and gave me troubleshooting steps for the next time. unfortunately, those steps include listening for the fuel pump, which you can't hear when you are stalled on the side of the highway. so, since the computer won't pop a code, i'm left with choosing either of 2 $800 repair jobs and hoping it works. i've been looking on dodge bulletin boards and this seems to be a common problem that they won't admit to. one of the boards said i should report it here so you could keep track of it. *jb

In january of 05 had to have both upper and lower ball joints replaced, control arm, front brakes and new tires as a result of bad f/e suspension. now today the speed sensor (and i am hoping that's it) has gone out on the transmission. i have had two window motor failures, a sudden drop in oil pressure causing the truck to stall and there is something wrong with the electrical system. there have been many complaints in regards to these failures and the dodge durango and although they have recalled other dodge trucks for these issues - they have yet to have recalled the 1999. i have contacted dodge since january of this year regarding this issue and they responded telling me that they hadn't had enough complaints to issue a recall. i find this hard to believe seeing all the complaints made to nhtsa and to consumer affairs in regards to this year and model. i also believe that the dodge dealer i bought this truck from (used) sold it to me knowing of these problems - although this i doubt i could ever prove. i am thankful that the front wheels stayed on as long as they did as i have read of the ball joint issue causing wheel separation. this could have been a deadly situation for my family (4 small children - we rely on this as our only transportation) and i hope that the problem is fixed but have serious doubts. *nm

Several months ago, i took my 1999 dodge durango in for a check engine light malfunction. the dealer informed me that the speed sensor was bad, and would need to be replaced. additionally, they also informed me that the inner tie rod ends were worn and would also need replacement. i was extremely shocked to hear this. at less than 38000 miles, this suv should not be experiencing problems with such a major suspension component. i asked the technician to show me what he was talking about and he proceeded to show me the amount of play in my front suspension due to this faulty component. when i inquired as to why there was no grease fitting on much of the front end, he replied thats the way dodge designs em and left it at that. i opted to perform the work myself so as to save the outrageous labor charges here in california, and also to ensure that a higher quality part was installed that included grease fittings. shortly after i completed the repairs, i began searching the internet for similar experiences from other durango owners. also to my surprise, i found a sustantial number of complaints about the front suspension on this suv, and also for models of other years. any auto manufacturer who installs non greasable suspension components on an suv designed to go offroad is simply engaging in cost cutting measures at the expense of their customers lives. i believe that my wife, family and i were lucky that this issue was identified early and there were no accidents or fatalities. it could have been much more serious. additionally, i am curious as to why a technician would even inspect the front end on a vehicle that was brought in for a simple electrical problem. unless the technician expected the damage and noting the milage on the truck, simply inspected the components on his own, i find it hard to believe that this would occur otherwise.*ak

Vehicle stalls out while in motion at any given time. came very close to being rear ended by a tractor trailer. it is always a guarantee that after putting gas in the vehicle it will stall out apporx. 2-3 miles afterwards, sometimes for over 45 mins. at a time. vehicle had (2) diagnostic reports done in which the first stated the intake manifold gaskets needed replacing and the throttle body needed cleaning. this was not true, since both were completed, vehicle continues to stall out while driving in general traffic or stopped at a traffic signal. the second diagnostic done stated nothing was wrong, however, after describing to the dealer the multiple problems, they suggested that the pcm needs to be replaced. after reviewing the complaints on this sight that are similar to the one that i have , it appears that this could be either the (pcm) or (central computer module/pick up plate) that is the problem. *nlm dealer currently working on replacing the pcm, but i will also question the (central computer module/pick up plate) to see if the two are in relation to one another. i pray that this will resolve this problem as i fear that i am driving around in a death trap because of the multiple close calls that i have had in this vehicle while stalling out in the most dangerous places. *nlm

1999 5.2l 2wheel drive dodge durango. my wife was driving down the road when the car suddenly died. a nobus indicator came on the odometer and the power brakes and steering of course failed to work since the engine had quit. this very nearly caused an accident and forced her to sit dead in traffic for 10 minutes before the engine would restart. it happened three more times before she could get home, but fortunatley at stop lights and stop signs.

1999 dodge durango (5.2l v8) car has stalled numerous times in heavy traffic and light traffic at speeds up to 75 mph as well as at a stop light. stalls are unpredictable and very dangerous. my wife cannot operate the vehicle when it stalls due to the loss of power steering and boosted brakes. it is extremely difficult to steer and stop when this occurs. the fault is due to a defective pcm (engine computer) which overheats in high ambient temperatures (>75 degrees). repair shop could not initially determine nature of failures and quoted a very high priced repair that would 'probably' fix the problem. i have determined that pouring ice water on the computer cools it sufficiently and allows the vehicle to start up after about 5 minutes. replacing pcm costs $300 for diy or >$600 from a repair shop. manufacturer has made no attempt to replace or recall this item.
