Defect SummaryCertain replacement k&n fuel performance kits, p/nos. 57-1509, 57-1511, 57-1511-1, 57-1517, 57-1517-1, 57-1527, and 57-1530. also, a small percentage of these kits were sold under the mopar performance parts brand name (p/nos. p5007069 and p5007070). all kits were manufactured from april 20, 1999, through september 23, 2004. these assemblies were manufactured as replacement equipment for certain dodge pickup trucks and suvs. a small piece of material from the tube wall could be sucked into the engine throttle body, which could cause the throttle to become jammed in the open position.
Consequence SummaryA jammed open throttle could cause unintended acceleration of the vehicle, possibly resulting in a crash or increased stoping distances when braking.
Corrective SummaryK&n will provide owners with a free repair kit along with repair instructions. the recall began on april 20, 2006.
NotesThis recall only pertains to replacement k&n fuel performance kits and has no relation to any original equipment installed on dodge vehicles manufactured by daimlerchrysler.customers may contact the national highway traffic safety administration's vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (tty: 1-800-424-9153); or go to http://www.safercar.gov.

Vehical dies at stop light. i push it to the side of the road to invaestigate. vehical engine cranks but doesnt fire. on odometer display it says no bus. fuel pump not coming on when ignition is turned on . i walk to parts store and buy fuel pump relay ,or circiut breaker. put it in , fuel pump comes on engine starts . wife is driving it two days later . vehical dies in busy intersection . nice people push her off the road way. she calls me , i tell her to take circiut breaker to parts store and get new one. she replaces breaker ,shes on the road again. so now i do some reading find out circiut breakers just get hot stop working , cool down and work again. so some thing is drawing too much current. replace the fuel pump and filter , big pain in the you know what. vehical dies two days later. nice man pulls me off the road. i leave vehicle sit for an hour . vehicle starts back up. so i just go on vehicle dies on me all the time. fast food lines ,busy intersections, it dies every where , every temp. i dont let mommy drive it anymore. i dont trust it to carry my baby anymore. i cant sell it . i have read about people having same exact problems . they say replace fuel pump ,did it. replace computer , did that. sevaral years ago dealer ship put new computer in cost me $1200. all for a problem simalar to this one. vehicle died at stop lights , but started up right away. i have replaced so many parts , every thing is new. i cant trust it . its very unsafe . i cant knowingly sell it to some body. thanks dodge.

When driving at highway speeds the engine will suddenly shut off losing power steering and brakes. after sitting for 10 to 30 minutes it will restart and run for an additional distance until shutting off and repeating the same symptoms again. it will sometimes perform normally for days until once again quitting for no reason. multiple components have been replaced without correcting the problem. dodge denies there being any problems with the vehicle but there are many instances of the same condition being reported on internet sites from around the country.
05/18/2011173000
This has happened on numerous occasions. while driving, especially in extremely hot or extremely cool situations, the vehicle engine shuts down unexpectedly. first symptom - check engine light. second symptom (3 seconds later) - fuel gauge from half full to empty. third symptom (immediate) - low fuel warning light. fourth symptom (2 seconds later) - low fuel warning light. fifth symptom - engine shut down at highway speed. completely lost vehicle control. no power steering, no power brakes. muscled car to the side of the road and barely avoided an accident. could have been easily killed. problem appears pcm-related, but from what i've read, numerous people have paid $1,000 for a new pcm only to have the same results. this is a serious problem and has been reported thousands of times on the internet. i hope somebody does something with dodge on this before a child is killed when the truck dies at highway speed.

1999 dodge durango - ingine stalls during driving, relates to computer overheating. i had the computer replaced but the problem returns. vehicle very difficult to stop or turn d/t power loss. last occured in oncoming traffic lane while turning. computer returns no codes but odometer displays no bus. engine compartment is way too hot for this component so i do not expect anything to work except re-routing the wiring and mounting the computer outside the engine compartment. i have tried improved air flow and insulation but it simply gets too hot. i cannot stress the level of risk this problem presents. had this occured while i was pulling a trailer over one of my usual camping routes i would not be reporting this nor would anyone else in the vehicle because losing the engine on a canyon edge would make the vehicle impossible to stop. i refuse to drive the vehicle as this has now happened even on quick trips on slow flat roads. this failure has occured 5 times now and is predictable. hot weather, 5-15 minutes of driving, all components hot in engine compartment, let it all cool down and vehicle can re-start. odometer blinks 4 times and returns no bus fault. computer will not return a code and so is not covered under its warranty for replacement. this is not a question of if but when a class 1 mishap will occur.

My 1999 dodge durango began jolting while driving with sudden loss of power, including steering. this has happened multiple times while driving on the highway and is increasing in frequency as the weather is warmer. i was able to coast to the side of the highway, but being as there was no shoulder, i ended up in a ditch. if this were a freeway and i were in the left lane, i am not sure i would have made it to the right shoulder without an accident. the car was towed to a mechanic where it started immediately. they said it was most likely the battery. i replaced the battery and the car continued to die. i am in the medical profession and am on call for emergencies. if the car were to die while responding to an emergency call, imagine the impact on other lives. also, if the car were to die on a freeway, the result could be fatal. the car is at a mechanic currently and they have 'no idea' what is wrong with it. i have since been avoiding freeways and taking side roads with reduced speed limits out of fear that the car will quit on a freeway. the odometer reads 'no bus' during the incidents and will start up again after it 'cools' for a few minutes. this now happens 2-3 times per week and, quite frankly, the next time it does, i may just leave the car where it dies.

My 1999 dodge durango just stops running but usually starts back up again. my wife usually drives this car with our 3 children and presents a very dangerous problem if it stops running at the wrong time. there are many complaints on the internet about the same problem with this model. i feel that dodge needs to investigate this problem and find a solution for its customers. *tr
07/28/20091185001
1999 dodge durango has continuously stalled in heavy traffic. engine, electrical shut down with no notice. no codes appear. we have replaced camshaft and crankshaft sensors, replaced and rewired starter but problem continues. this is a very dangerous occurrence and we have missed near (possibly fatal) accidents. someone needs to step in and assist owners before a fatality occurs. thank goodness the semi truck driver who was traveling at 45+ mph saw our stalled vehicle and was able to move. imagine the scene if it had stalled on a railroad crossing! *tr
07/26/20091000001
1999 dodge durango constantly stalling out. my wife was stuck sideways in the middle of a busy intersection today after pulling out and the vehicle died during acceleration. has happened a number of times and apparently is happening to a lot of the same year durangos. simply go to carcomplaints.com and review the number of similar incidents. there is little to no warning. we have seen a difference in the frequency of the occurrence when it is raining or has rained. it does it more frequently when it has. it is very sporadic, so we never know when it is safe to drive or not. if there are any warning signs, we would know to use extra caution prior to driving it that day or take other forms of transportation. i certainly hope no one gets killed while this is happening and i hope it is not one of my family. please investigate this situation! *tr

1999 dodge durango 4 wheel drive engine will stall and will not start for 10 to 20 minutes. gauges are inoperative. no bus message displayed on odometer. stalls in traffic. freeways almost got rear ended a bunch of times ...please help before we get killed. *tr

1999 durango stalls randomly without warning. recently while traveling on the highway with my wife and two kids it stalled at 60 mph on route 15 in connecticut. it was everything i could do to keep the truck on the road and get it restarted. the results could have been catastrophic. i will no longer let my family ride with me in the vehicle. i have done some searches on-line and am shocked to see hundreds of post about the same problem and no resolution or acknowledgment from dodge. i feel there needs to be a recall and corrective action. of course if dodge doesn't know how to fix the problem it's very difficult to do a recall. they should therefore buy the vehicles back from the current owners. *tr

Here is a copy of my complaint that i emailed directly to dodge: i have done alot of research and have found that the dealers do not know how to fix this problem and there are numerous web sites with fellow 1999 dodge durango owners who are experiencing the same problem and we are looking for your recall to permanently correct the matter. your dealers have not been able to correct the problem at any price. when the outside temperature of where ever you live gets warm, the vehicle will stop with no warning and you lose control of your vehicle. the dash says no bus where the mileage usually is. it is unpredictable and dangerous to drive this vehicle although i love everything else about it. i am sad to see that there are several years of consumers asking dodge for help with this problem and yet there is no answer from you. please explain to me what you can do about this. i do not want to be a statistic about driving a 1999 dodge durango and dying from it. please do something. i can't drive the vehicle in the spring or summer but don't feel right about trying to sell it and pass it on to someone else who doesn't know any better. i am sure that you are very aware of this problem and can find several web sites with consumers asking for help and reporting similar problems just by googling 1999 dodge durango but here are a few links for you to visit too. http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/complaints/results.cfm http://www.carcomplaints.com/dodge/durango/1999/electrical/vehicle_shuts_down_without_warning.shtml please do the right thing and offer your consumers the help that they need. this is not an isolate problem and you are surely aware of it. i will await your answer about a recall that will correct this. *tr thank you, leah

1999 dodge durango. bought used in 2003 w/70k miles. before it hit 80k the motor had blown and lost all power while driving down i-95. no warnings. towed to garage and needed top end rebuilt due to lack of lubricant in the top end. private warranty company covered half the cost claiming my lack of maintanace. just before 100k it would lose oil pressure when warmed up and the vehicle came to a stop. took it to garage and they replaced the oil pressure sending unit claiming it was blocked with sludge. within 500 miles the motor blew again. had entire motor rebuilt with new top end and bottom end, new bearings etc. flushed and changed oil every 3k miles from then till it reached 125k miles. once again while stop at toll booth vehicle lost oil pressure but would come back up when i applied a little throttle. tried to pull off the road but within 100 feet the motor started banging and then lost power and shut down. towed it back home and checked oil. dipstick showed nothing. 2 days later when i checked the oil the level was good. oil must have gotten trapped in the top end and caused the bottom end to be unlubricated and fail. what a poorly designed engine. vehicle sits in my backyard with another blown motor. thanks chrysler. *tr

This truck should be recalled!! deaths will occur with this and probably already have. will start researching that with insurance companies! the durango shuts down without warning. you have no control of the vehicle when this happens. the oil pressure drops to 0 and the truck then attempts to stall or does stall. if the truck cools or you bet cool air on the pcm, then the oil gauge jumps back up to 40 and the truck runs fine. have had the oil checked and there oil is running though the engine as it should be although the gauge says 0 and the check gauges light and check engine light comes on. this truck a safety hazard and a liability to whomever is driving. we still owe $3500 on it and it now makes a nice yard ornament. - this is a serious safety issue for all of us drivers. we shouldn't have to bite the bullet on this one. driving is dangerous enough without driving a durango that shuts down continually and without notice. you lose your power steering, power brakes and it's hard to navigate or even get a truck this large to stop. we have the 4x4 with the 5.9l engine. it's a tank that i used to love until it became too dangerous to drive. dodge does not want to take any responsibility for this and every dodge dealership you call acts like it's the 1st time they have heard of it. with the thousands of posts that are on the internet, i find that hard to believe. dodge needs to take responsibility for this. buy back our trucks or at least give us a large enough rebate on a new vehicle. but they do need to take responsibility. please contact me. these trucks are too dangerous to be on the road. www.carcomplaints.com lists 62 complaints and there are many many more. *tr

My wife has a 99 durango 5.9l 4x4 with 175,000 miles. about three weeks ago immediately after a standard tune-up the vehicle began reading multiple misfires and a p1391 error code. i recheck everything and use the scanner to reset all of the trouble codes on the truck. next thing you know - everything is running fine and there weren't any error codes registering. next day my wife drives the truck and calls me later in the day and says just suddenly stopped working while she was driving the truck down the road

The car cuts off while it is driving at various speeds, including highway speeds and with no warning at all. after a few minutes it will usually start back up. there were no injuries but if it was to cut off while driving and going around a corner it could easily run off the road or into oncoming traffic. i have read about lots of other drivers or this same type of vehicle having the same exact problem. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 dodge durango. on eight or nine occasions, while either idling or driving between 25-35 mph, the vehicle has stalled in the middle of traffic. sometimes, the vehicle will immediately restart and other times, it takes a half an hour before restarting. the vehicle has been to the dealer on three occasions for this failure, but they have been unable to duplicate the failure. the failure mileage was 100,000.

I purchased a 1999 dodge durango from a private dealer last year. not long after the purchase, while driving the vehicle down the road at about 50 mph, the engine shut off...barely any brakes, unable to steer. this happened several times after that, eventually leading to me not driving it anymore. while researching what was wrong with the vehicle, i came across many other people with the same problem, same make, year and model vehicle. many were reporting their close calls with mva's due to the engine just shutting off and them losing control of the vehicle. this is obviously a wide spread and dangerous problem, that thus far, dodge has failed to recall. i, as well as many others, do not have the money to put in to the vehicle for computer changes and uncertain mechanical work to get our vehicles in safe operating condition. i believe it's time that dodge do a recall and fix this dangerous problem. *tr

I am the owner of a 99 dodge durango slt since 12/31/98. about 14 months ago it started dying on me without any apparent reason. i have had it serviced 7 times at 2 different dealerships. all with the same result, temporarily fixed. the last 2 times being the worst. each from a different dealership. i have been driving on the freeway at 70 mph and had it die. this shuts all power steering and braking down. luckily, i've been able to avoid being rearended or hit as i coasted to the side of the road. i stopped driving with my wife and kids in the truck, in case of being hit. the service depts have: checked connections, replaced speed sensor unit, central timer module, crankshaft module and are now telling me i need to replace the pcm. have seen on the web that this is not an isolated incident. i love the truck, but it's inoperable by most standards. *tr

Intake plenum gasket failed. over a 1 month time and only 60k in mileage. oil is sucked out of the engine like a straw. i see dodge has a service bulletin about the issue but this really is a defect since it has happened to a whole hell of alot of people. next is these crappy balljoints. i had one fail 2 jears ago with only 49k in mileage. i went to the dealership to find that they only have a recall on 2001-2003 which is assanine since the same control arms and ball joints are used in the 1998 and 1999 models too. the property damage involved is the damage to my vehicle from a defective gasket or engine design.

During all driving conditions during the last 6 years and while being driven on the road my 1999 dodge durango periodically shuts down. the engine, power steering, and power breaks fail and the vehicle exhibits a no bus in its odometer. after stalling this way it will restart after 10 minutes to an hour. the shutting down at freeway speeds is dangerous; however, after repeatedly taking the vehicle to different dodge dealers they can not properly diagnose or solve this life threatening problem. *tr

I was driving on the expressway and my dodge durango began to stall. i put on my hazard lights immediately. cars began to swerve to avoid me. i tried to pull off to the shoulder of the road but the engine cut off and then the brakes would not work until i tried to restart the car in neutral. i could not restart the car for 20 minutes. when the car did start i proceeded home. the car stalled three more times on the way home. *tr

1999 dodge durango 4x4 bought in sept. 07, within two weeks lost of oil pressure during highway driving just over 150 miles, oil pressure goes to zero and engine light comes on. had to put 4.5 qts of oil. later on during the trip the speedometer quit working unless going above 50 mph. also at the same time the abs light and brake light illuminated and stays on. going to start with replacing the speed sensor on the transmission. hopefully this solves the abs and brake light problem. *tr

I have had repeated problems with my '99 dodge durango that started with the engine light going on in september 27, 2005 and is now the need for a new cpm. the car intermittent stalls while riding down the road at 55mph or after idling at stop light & turning left (power steering goes out and car blocks intersection/traffic) - no bus appears on mileage, everything shuts off. seems to happens on days when the environmental temperature exceeds 75 degrees and disappears once car has sat (wherever it stalled) for 20-30minutes. no diagnostic code appears when put the car is put on the computer and i was advised by more then one dealership that the problem had to get worse and produce a code before dealership or anyone else could diagnose the problem. now that the 8 yr federal powertrain warranty has expired for me, it seems the problem is &always was that the powertrain control module (pcm) is malfunctioning &needs to be replaced. this major component is covered thru 8yrs/80,000 mi by federal law but even though problem began prior to 8th year, because this problem was not diagnosed until after my 8 yrs had been exceeded, it is now my $800-$1200 bill to pay (since sept '05, have replaced most components of coolant system, intake manifold pan gasket, head gasket &still have problem with alignment/ball joints& repeated window modulator problems). *tr

I am a 99 durango 5.9 owner, experiencing the same problems with the stalling/no bus signal. so far we have replaced the crank sensor, the engine auto-shutdown relay and the front oxygen sensor with out any success. spoken to two dealers, they play stupid, bring it in next week and we may have time to look at it. (nice customer service). after about 20 miles or the temp gauge reaches 210 degrees it dies. if i sit for 10 minutes with the hood open it will start right back up. so sad when the manufactures play so stupid, we don't know what the problem is. maybe they should read this web page. i was thinking about trading it in on a new dodge, let them deal with the problem but after reading these comments i am thinking twice about that. *jb

Car stalls. my car stalls while i am driving or at a stop light, just idling. it has stalled on the freeway, which is very dangerous. before the car stalls the battery voltage sensor and the fuel level indicator goes all the way down. then the odometer starts blinking and saying no bus. the autoshops i have been to do not know what no bus means. i have to turn the ignition off and on several times before the battery voltage and fuel indicator go back up. it takes anywhere from a couple seconds to 20+ minutes for the car to finally start. sometimes it won't start. the check engine light comes on, when the car stalls. but once the car starts, the light goes away. i have took the car to several mechanics. they ran diagnostic testing on it. the obd found no problems. my injectors and everything are working fine. pls help. these is one of several problems w/ these car. coolant leaks, ball joints always going out. i fixed these problems several times. i am tired of this car. *tr

I purchased a 1999 durango in jan of 2000. i have had numerous problems including rebuilding the transmission. my biggest complaint is the engine sludge and spark knock. i have had the oil pump and screen replaced twice as well as the upper intake gaskets. it is my understanding that the upper intake gaskets leak internally causing oil consumption, spark knock, and eventually oil sludge and engine failure. chrysler should do something about the thousands of vehicles that are experiencing these issues. *jb

Car stalls, idles erratically and stalls when falls below 500 rpms. a/c blows hot air when idles falls below 1000 rpms. this has been happening for months, no rhyme or reason, no codes. sometimes so bad that car stalls as soon as you let off of the accelerator to go around a curve. when will a recall be issued? there is obviously a problem. dodge needs to step up to the plate. does someone have to die before its fixed? do a search on the internet. complaint are everywhere.

We recently purchased a 1999 dodge durango slt from a private party. this is a well maintained vehicle and has no history of problems. within a few days of having this vehicle it began to stall for no apparent reason. this would be at 65 mph or stopped. if you wait 5-20 min it will restart. we have had this car looked at and have replaced the crank sensor to no avail. while doing an internet search it appears this is not a new problem and many other owners are experiencing it as well. the mechanics get no code from the stall and no one can pinpoint the problem. we are frustrated and pretty unhappy to find out this is a recurring problem with this vehicle. this is very dangerous as everything locks up when it stalls. *jb

I have a 1999 dodge durango with 73,000 miles. we had the transmission replaced and other major repairs done to it last year. since then it has given us nothing but trouble. this car is our family car so we travel everywhere with the kids in the back. it has stalled and died on us often. at times on the freeway in the middle of traffic and other times in the middle of intersections. the power steering goes and so do the brakes. i have been lucky so far in avoiding accidents. the mechanics can not find out what is wrong with it so nothing is done about it. the fuel lines have been checked and replaced and so has the fuel pump and the same problem continues. *jb

Dt: the contact owns a 1999 dodge durango that experienced an excessive oil consumption problem. the oil was disappearing nearly every 500 miles. there was no smoking or any type of leaks. the contact felt this was a mechanical problem. the vehicle was using four or five quarts of oil rapidly. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic shop for inspection. the mechanic replaced the intake manifold. the upper plenum and throttle body was removed to determine the leak site. the gasket that was supposed to seal the intake of the engine block had apparently not adhered to the bottom on the intake and along the engine. the mechanic noted that chrysler made some design corrections, but the cylinder heads will collect and blow over into the engine, and eventually will be expelled from the vehicle on the ground or burned out. it could collect eight to ten quarts before expelling. the repair was made , and a gasket was replaced. this was the second time it was replaced. the gasket did not necessarily fix the problem because the gasket did not permanently adhered to that area. they retracted it due to hot and cold temperatures, and could not adhere as needed. the contact has another 1999 dodge durango that experienced this problem. also, there was a pinhole on the air conditioner evaporator that allowed the freon to escape and enter in to other durangos. *ak

Without any warning, and on 3 separate occasions my 1999 dodge 4x4, durango completely shutdown while driving. after the first incident, w/the abs and engine light on the vehicle was taken to a dodge dealer for service. it was found that a speed sensor needed replacing, this was done. approximately 4 days later while driving on new york ave. in washington dc, the durango again completely shut down, on this occasion and subsequent ones, no warning lights were shown, no evidence was given that vehicle was about to shut down. on the last occasion sept 17, 2003 it again shutdown while driving approximately 45 mph on leesburg pike in falls church va. unlike the other 2 occasions this time it would not restart, although the engine attempted to turnover. it had to be towed, where it is currently undergoing another diagnosic, currently i am awaiting a call from the service technician. additionally the car has 87,256 miles and 3 years old, the back windows are not working due to a failed power housing unit for the windows. the approximate cost is $500 for repairs.

The right rear window motor had to be replaced since it abruptly stopped working. but the real problems are with the car all of a sudden dying while driving normally on the road, causing the power steering and brakes to fail making it almost impossible to steer out of harms way if you find yourself admist a lot of traffic. once the car dies it usually starts right back up again after a few minutes, but it has become so unpredictable that i'm afraid to take the vehicle back out on the street! the milage now is at 48000 and the problem started occuring at around 40000 first rarely but now more frequently.

Our engine ceased after having repeated problems with the oil pump, we were called liars by the dealership and diamler chrysler. they don't seem to want to take responsibility for anything. when i took our durango in because the front end kept pulling to the right after we paid $5200. for our motor to be replaced, i was told we needed new tires and a front end alignment. so i took it to another place to have the work done, since my confidence in the dealership was gone. only to be told they could not allow me to take the car back out on the road with my children in the car, do to the ball joint. he said it would take one pothole and i'd probably roll my car, another $1200. later and i could have my car back. what is up with this? they allowed us to risk our lives driving this vehicle, and diamler chrysler seems to care less about all the problems with this suv, how many people out there are spending money to keep fixing this vehicle and trying to make the payments. we got rid of a car so we wouldn't have to make repair payments and right into a nightmare. when is someone going to do something about the problems with this vehicle, and i think we should be reimbursed for all the repairs that they knew about and did nothing to fix. it's not fair to the public to have to dig in their pockets to fix a mistake that diamler has known about and refuses to do anything to make it right for the consumers! we are the people that purchase your product, you should be more supportive rather than calling people liars!! you well knew that the problems with this vehicle and yet you continue to sell them, with no regard to the consumers that drive their families in these cars, we could have been killed, what would have happened then, or would that have been our fault as well.

Check guages light comes on, oil pressure gauge goes to zero then back. had fuel gauge do the same. took into dealer and dealer attributed to wires and did a wiggletest. vehicle had no more problem with fuel gauge. several weeks later the check gauges and the oil gauges did same thing. took to dealer and they stated it may be oil pump. after removing oil pan, dealer stated to much sludge in pan and had extended warranty send an adjuster to check out. dealer then took engine apart to find that sludge was through out the engine but no damage to bearings or vital parts. warranty company western diversified declined repair stating that to infrequent oil changes. warranty stated that even with proof of oil changes that this is an oil breakdown problem and not their problem. dealer stated now that it was our responsibility and wanted us to pay for a new engine. consumer refused and fortunately got to trade in vehicle towards purchase of a new one. only after reviewing nhtsa website did we realize that we were in a no win situation and luckily got out from under the vehicle. this is a problem that dodge obviously knows about, i am waiting for this company to do the right thing. we have shown our commitment to the company by buying several vehicles the least they could do is pay us the same respect!!!!!!!!

Several time my overdrive light has come on and then has shut off in the last year. the dealer has told me that there is nothing they can do unless i bring the truck in while the light is on. one day in july on my lunch hour i was sitting in the drive thru getting lunch and my overdrive light came on and wouldnt shut off. the transmission light came on and the temp gauge shot up in the red zone. i immediatley parked the vehicle and called roadside assitance. the vehicle was towed to the dealer. the dealer called me and told me theire was nothing wrong. they siad you must have pushed the overdive light by accident. i dont think so i told them. they said they put the truck on their machine and it told them the lights and guages never showed they lit up or overheated. impossible. im afraid im going to get stranded again with my child. my airconditioner doesnt cool well and they say it cools fine. my truck is currently in the shop due to the paint is lossing its clearcoat. love the durango but very disgusted.

I noticed the problem while doing my first oil change on the vehicle. i always check all the fluid levels when i do an oil change and noticed that the antifreeze level did not register on the radiator dipstick. i didn't think much of it since i hadn't checked the levels of anything since i bought the used vehicle because the dealer assured me that it was given a certified 135-point inspection. well after that i have checked the radiator fluid level on a regular basis (approximately every two weeks) and have found it to be low every time. i don't know where it's going. there are no traces of antifreeze on the garage floor and i don't see any visable leaks anywhere. i also can't detect the smell of burning antifreeze in the exhaust fumes. i took the vehicle to my local dodge dealer on 12/2/99 and they could not detect any problems and had no answer. they put a dye in the antifreeze to be able to detect a leak using a blacklight at a later date. i have gotten on internet newsgroup web sites and have found other people that have experienced similar problems, some worse than others. they are also saying that dodge knows it has this problem with it's larger engines. well, that's all i can tell you for now. thanks.

Upon idle, the temp guage exceeds 210 and causes ac to blow hot air. after accellerating ac cools again but vehicle continually overheats and causes ac to blow hot. dealer said it is flaw in the durango and later version '99's have been upgraded already. is there a recent tsb on this?

We purchased this vehicle from v & h ford inc, marshfield, wi. in june 2003. the next day after i got it i started it & it started to squeal. my husband noticed transmission fluid leaking as well. we took it back to the dealer, we were told that the fan clutch & serpentine belt were shot, as well as a little leak in the transmission. they put some kind of sealer on it & continued to leak. (also during all of this time, our rpm's kept jumping.) after the 3rd time, they said they did a factory authorized repair & put what was referred to as a cock ring in it to seal it. this seams to have taken care of this. then when the truck was put in reverse it kept clunking, the u-joints went out next, then the latch broke on our glove box. meanwhile the rpm's keep jumping, it has been back in the shop a total of probably 7 to 8 times so far. our service engine light came on & flashed the code of fuel injector #8, when it was put through the diagnostic test, however we are learning this is still not the problem. last weekend i was going to put the truck in the garage. i put in drive, and it took off on me without me even touching the gas. it has done this several times now while on the road. now for the past week, when you leave a stop sign, it will shift once and stay at about 3000 - 3500 rpm and will not shift until you are ready to stop. when you try to stop the trottle sticks and the truck wants to go. we are at loss what to do. we have obviously purchased a lemon that it a hazard to be on the road. to trade it in or try to sell it outright seems to be a crime, because we know the horrible things wrong with it. i am certain that it is only a matter of time before my husband & i and our 2 children are seriously hurt or killed by the spuratic behavior of this dangerous vehicle. please advise us what to do. is there a lemon law or any thing that can help us. meanwhile, we are stuck making payments on this . *ak

1999 dodge durango---while out driving during the hotter months, the truck would just shut down while i was driving. the brakes stopped working, the steering wheel stopped working and the odemeter read no bus. when i finally stopped the car by running into a curb, it would not start for another 30 minutes. finally got it started and two miles down the road, it happened again. after talking to other durango owners, i was directed to change the pcm. well that is a $1000.00 job. it was explained to me that the pcm box over heats because of where it is placed under the hood. that section where the pcm box is is not receving any air flow to keep it cool. the cooling fins are nested too close to the body of the truck. this is a manufacturing problem and should be recalled . this is a safety issue, because you cannot control the car when it shuts down. you also have no warning that the car is getting ready to shut down. the first time it shut down my kids where in the car with me and we were on a very busy expressway. we were almost rear-ended. and we almost rear ended the car in front of us. please, please i beg dodge to check into this. i know that there have been several complaints on this truck because of this issue. i hope it does not take someone's death before the company steps up and takes reponsibility for the manufacturing of this vehicle.

All of a sudden one day when we had a heat wave, our 1999 dodge durango decided to just stall out when he was in the fast lane on the freeway and almost caused him to get rear ended and another time for an accident to almost occur. this happened with no notice at all. then, three other times it stalled in the middle of the road after picking our kids up just trying to get home. this is so dangerous and dodge says its a problem with the pcm. the more i read, the more it is obvious that it is a safety concern and needs to be fixed by dodge, not all of the owners that are lucky to be alive!

99 dodge durango slt 5.2 318 motor blew. only had 105,000 miles on it changed oil and did upkeep right on schedule. this pile crap has been nothing but a lemon since we bought it. first it started shutting off while driving, had to fight tooth and nail to get dodge to replace pcm, i did the investigation to figure out the problem because they did not want to pay for it and tried really hard to stretch this out to where i would not have warranty anymore. they wanted to send us off with a black box after they supposedly fixed problem but didn't. now my motor blew! we have taken motor out and it looks all burned up...what a complete piece of crap..so angry that dodge refuses to step up on these obvious defects that are their fault not the poor consumer who paid way to much for this lemon of a vehicle. also have to replace all ball joints, because the 99 should of been included in the recall!!!! thanks for nothing dodge!!! i will never buy american again, this was my first time of straying from nissans and toyotas,,,never again. *tr

My dodge durango (1999) started stalling at random times two summers ago. it took me many trips to the dealer and alot of research on the internet and a yell fest with the dodge field rep. but i got it fixed. they had no idea what was wrong with it, it is the pcm(power control module).....finally convinced them they didn't want a lawsuit on their hands if my family was killed due to this major defect in durangos, mainly 1999 from what i have read. pcm replaced, no problems with stalling since. *tr

In the last 4 yrs i have to replace the engine 2xs @$2500 per episode. despite regular oil changes, the oil pump is the first to go. i have repair men look at me like i do not change the oil because the oil is burnt to the pump. they have to clean the oil trap and replace parts. then less then 3 months later, that engine goes. i end up having to replace the whole engine. the first time it happened was at 51,000 mile. i contacted that company and they send sorry, you're past the warranty next, it happened at 75,000 miles. and, on the second experience, i had to replace the oil pump a 2nd time w/in 3 months because when the technicians started my vehicle and the burnt-type oil in the oil trap went back into the engine clogging the pump. thus, they made me pay for that too. please note i may be off on the date below. *nm

1999 dodge durango, bought new, has 53,000 miles, i was driving on a highway on 4/22/05,check gauges lit up on dashboard, oil pressure gauge went to zero, car still drivable, pulled over after 3-4 miles into turnpike service area, checked oil stick and it read full, continued additional drive to destination of approx. 5 miles and dropped off at nearby dodge dealership, their diagnosis is sludge in engine and oil pump has to be replaced and the entire engine will have to be replaced, they suspect lousy maintenenace by car owner regarding oil changes, i have documentation that car was well maintained, on a internet search, i found that hundreds of durango owners have experienced the exact problems with this type of vehicle. in addition, i have experienced other problems with my vehicle: replaced window moter, replaced leak in cooling system thermostat, replaced switch assembly for a/c heating unit, replaced brakes and rotors on front.*ak

Oil consumption was in excess after oil change. changed oil and checked it after approximately 400 miles and found it was a quart low. watched it close and it was consuming oil fast. took it to dealer and was told the intake manifold seal/gasket would need to be replaced. called a mechanic and he told me that this was a common occurrence with the durango, he did one every couple of months! even the dealer mechanics says they saw this quiet often. one mechanic told me that the seals were made out of a paper like material but now used metal type so the problem will not recur! this is a know defect in this engine. there are several complaints of this nature when i searched on line. the cost is $675.00 + tax. i feel i should be helped with this know engineering defect. this is a very costly repair! *jb

While driving about 70 mph i heard a loud noise coming from under my 1999 durango, i took the vehicle to a local firestone, they discovered that the drive shaft had fell from it's housing, so i then took the vehicle to a transmission shop, cottman. the shop informed me of the following, the yoke and the bolt that retained the drive shaft in the transfer case had broken off some how, due to this occurrence, the transfer case was damaged, because all of the oil leaked out. also in 2003, had to have the ball joints replace and, also the engine head because the vehicle was burning to much oil and damage the heads.*jb

Purchsed a 1999 dodge durango in fall of 1998. when truck was two years old, oil pressure guage went to zero repeatedly. i immediately took it to dealership. was told the oil pump needed to be replaced. i had the work done. over the course of two years the guage would intermittenly go to zero. had oil pump checked. it was deemed to be okay. shop could not duplicate problem. during the last 6 mo.s problem continued more often. took to shop. i was told it was an electrical problem with the oil pressure guage. on one occasion, truck abruptly quit while i was going down a hill. kind of a scary experience! the shop replaced a fuel pump. on feb. 28.2004, truck's oil pressure guage went to zero, a loud noise was heard, and truck,s engine quit.(while i was traveling at 60 mph.) engine is history. my truck now has no trade-in value. after reading about identicle complaints on this web site, and consumer affairs' web site, it is obvious to me that dodge has a problem. i believe that this problem could even result in injury or death. i know that i will never purchase another dodge and will tell everyone i know about my experience i have had for three years with this truck. thank you.*ak

I purchased my 1999 durango in march 2001. in dec 2003 i had to get the driveshaft rebuilt. the velocity joint had worn out. then in jan '04 i was traveling about 65mph on an interstate just outside of town. my check engine light came on. i started to here a knocking sound along with feeling like there was a cylinder down. i got my truck towed back home and replaced the disributor cap since the points were worn. didn't take care of the problem. towed my truck to my mechanic. after checking several items he determined that cylinder 1 and 8 were not firing. he also checked the oil. it had gunk in it and told me that the manifold gasket and/or plenum gasket had failed and the oil looked like it was mixed with antifreeze. i then had checked to see if anyone else had experienced problems of this kind. i was suppressed to find out that there was 30 to 40 similar complaints like mine on your website alone where the engine had failed with the oil gunking up. i have not had the oil pump checked but since reading the complaints, assume that this had some cause to the problem. my truck only has 72000 miles on it. i agree that the 5.2 engine that dodge had put in the durango is junk as well as everyone else. it is a shame that dodge does not stand up behind the engines it builds. if you have this many people with problems, then it is time to do something about it. i am going to trade this off as soon as my mechanic can get it running. i will back up the next person that happens to buy my now piece of junk when they have to take it back to dodge. i will not buy another dodge product!!! *la

Purchased my 1999 dodge durango in july 1999. this vehicle has always been serviced at the local dodge dealership in little rock at the service intervals that chrysler recommends in their service manual. i started having problems with my durango at 51,492 miles with the check engine light coming on. i immediately took it in for service. the service dept. told me that the vehicle's computer said i had a blown head gasket along with #7 injector being bad. so a new platinum gasket, #7 injector and injector service was done at a cost to me of $814.72. at 52,085 miles the check engine light came on again. again into the dodge service dept. only to find out that now the engine computer is bad (pcm213) and will be replaced under dodge's 80,000 mile warranty. my thinking at this point was that if the computer was giving out false information at 51,492 miles then perhaps my $814.72 bill for a new platinum gasket wasn't justified. of course, the service dept. assured me that these repairs were indeed necessary at the time. at 53,628 miles i grew concerned about upper/lower ball joints being bad on my durango after watching a cbs news report. as i was planning a cross country trip for the holidays, i had the service dept. evaluate the balls joints before i left, and sure enough, my durango needed upper and lower ball joints and a right tie rod. because this problem can be so dangerous i was instructed not to drive the vehicle and had to take alternate transportation on my trip. new parts were ordered and the dodge service dept. replaced the upper and lower ball joints on both sides and a right tie rod arm at a cost to me of $952.10 plus a $57.82 diagnostic test to tell us these parts were bad in the first place. i feel that my vehicle is unreliable and not one that i can depend on in the future. these are safety defects that chrysler should have fixed at no cost to me. i cannot afford to repair this vehicle anymore. *la

We have several complaints about our 1999 dodge durango. we have had the pcm go in 2003, luckily my wife did research and found out there was a recall and it was covered. the front suspension ball joints are blown and now our dealership has informed us that we need to spend $5100.00 to repair the engine due to the oil pump is blown. the engine will seize if my wife attempts to drive the durango. there just seems to be a common thread here since most of the complaints i have read about are the same complaints we have. *la

Purchased durango in may 02,and performed regular maintenance on it.on 11/20/02 my family and i were on our way to michigan and the check gauges light came on and the oil pressure dropped to 0,the motor started to knock.we were on the ohio turnpike,(with 5 children),and had to find a place to pull over before the engine would blow.this was odd with only 46300 miles on the motor.luckily we were next to an exit,we pulled over and called the chrysler garage, they said do not drive the vehicle any further your oil pump is more than likely bad.the garage told us that there had been sludge build up in the motor which clogged the pickup tube which made pump fail, all do to lack of maintenance.the oil pump was replaced and got the vehicle back on 1/9/03 at the price of $350.90.the vehicle stil had a tapping sound coming from engine and the mechanic told me it was the lifters and it would go away.in october 2003,my sister and i were packing the car to go to my aunts funeral 250 miles from home,i started the car to go, we heard a knocking noise from the engine and the check gauges light came on and the oil pressure gauge dropped to 0,so we called the garage again.they said to bring it in they will replace the oil pump again. the vehicle had 55626 miles on it at the time, and they told us that there was still a problem with sludge in the motor from lack of maintenance.they told us they flush the motor with clean oil over and over for two days to remove any sludge, fixed my car free of charge and this time i had it back in a week.january 18,03 at 11:00 pm i was picking up my husband from work and the check gauges light came on again and oil pressure gauge was at zero.the garage said to bring it in and they would once again change the oil pump, free of charge, but still continue to tell me that there is still probably sludge in the motor, due to lack of amintenance and that they may not have gotten all it.the mileage now stands at 58300. 300 miles away from the next oil change.*ak

While driving 60 mph on the florida turnpike in miami, the check engine light came on, the oil presure gauge dropped to zero and all power to car was lost. no steering, braking or control of any nature over the vehicle was possilbe. this i may add occurred while heading for a toll booth.while still coasting i tried to restart the engine in an attempt to regain power to the steering and brakes, the engine would not restart. i tried to apply brakes but could not depress the brake pedal it was as if i were pushing on a concrete wall. after going through the toll booth i tried to steer the car to the right shoulder, i could only move the steering wheel about 1/2 inch, luckily this was enough to allow the car to gradually make it to the shoulder. i coasted to a stop about 1/4 mile or more past the toll booth. fortunately traffic was light as it was a sunday afternoon and i made it to the shoulder without incident. i tried to restart the car again and it would not crank. i did have electrical power to the lights and emergency flashers. i raised the hood and checked the oil level, it was fine, the motor was not excesively hot, in fact the temperature gauge never went above normal operating range. the car is at my mechanics now being checked for possible problems. i did not take to the dealer as i do not trust their honesty nor work, after all they built this inferior death trap called a durango. i truly beleive this car is unsafe, no car should loose complete steerage and stopping ability under any conditions. i was traveling at 60mph in a heavily congested city without the ability to steer or brake a 2 ton hunk of steel. how lucky was i and other motorists on the road to be alive and uninjured? *ak

Engine lost oil pressure first at 39933 miles while the car was still under warranty. the dealership changed the oil pump and advised us of sludge build up in the engine. the same problem at 63025 miles along with a transmission overhaul. the dealership at which we purchased the truck replaced the oil pump again, advised of sludge build up and overhauled the transmission under warranty. they also checked on the cost of a new engine but chrysler would not cover it, so they simply replaced the oil pump. same problem for the 3rd time at 73825 miles, less than 12 months and 12000 miles later. the service department at the dealership admits that replacing the oil pump will not help. they need to clean the sludge out for it to run better but even this will not solve the problem. unless the entire engine is taken apart and soaked clean or chrysler supplies a new engine, we will always have this problem. regular oil changes were completed on this vehicle. after the first oil pump the dealer advised that i using synthetic oil, which was done. after the 2nd oil pump was replaced the dealer said that the synthetic oil would not make any difference. *nlm

My 99 durango has a defective engine! my oil pressure gauge dropped to zero while driving on the expressway so i pulled off and let the motor cool down and checked the oil. after letting the engine cool off for a while i preceded home. after about 10 miles back on the road the check gauges light came on, the oil pressure had dropped to zero again, and i could feel the truck slowing down without letting off the gas. i pulled off the next exit and the motor knocking like someone was slamming a hammer on the heads. the dealer said to have it towed in so they could look at it. after 2 days the dealer called me back and said i needed a new long block. i and asked how a motor with only 50,000 miles on it could need a new block. the dealer's response was the engine had some sludge in the oil and in his opinion thought it was due to lack of maintenance. it took everything i had to keep from going off on this guy for accusing me of not maintaining my $30,000 truck! i do the oil changes, air filter, and fluid level maintenance myself because i don't trust some of these guys that work at these dealers. it's my $30,000 that's why i do my own maintenance! i called chrysler's 800 help line and explained what happened to the guy who took my call. he listened, but sounded very un-interested as he asked a few questions, put me on hold as he called the dealer where my vehicle was. after 15-20 minutes he came back on the line and said he was sorry, but there was nothing he, nor chrysler could do to help me because the dealer told him that he thought it was due to lack of maintenance. my wife called chrysler later and she explained the story to the lady that took her call. her response to my wife was this: if you can produce receipts for all the maintenance maybe we will change our minds. my wife told the lady i do all the maintenance, no other service shop, and she told my wife that owners that do their own oil changes are not dodge certified mechanics. *la

I own a 1999 dodge durango. last year we began having oil pressure related problems. we were driving and the pressure would drop to 0 and we would have to stop the car and have it towed in. first they changed out oil sending unit, next they couldn't duplicate the problem. the next time they claimed it was due to lack of maintenance (changing our oil every 3,000 miles). yes we did change our oil. we had our engine flushed several times. it still produces sludge even right after the oil is changed. it is now sitting in our driveway because we do not have the money for a new engine which it requires. the thing is that we began looking on the internet to try to diagnose the problem ourselves and there are literally thousands of others that own dodge durangos with the same problem. is there not something that we can do? we were even given a free extended warranty for all of our problems of course until our original warranty ran out and now they say that our warranty will not be honored due to this. this is the same story as many many others. thanks for your time. *la

My husband and i purchased our 99 dodge durango in september 2002, used from a honda dealership. a few days after we drove it off the lot, the oil pressure gauge began to drop to 0 rapidly, then back up to 40, then it started stalling and hesitating after restart. we called the dealer, they said to bring it in, so we winged it 20 miles to the shop, where they had it in service for a few days. they said it was the oil sending unit and oil pump, so they replaced it at no charge to us because it was within the 30 days. so a few weeks later the truck did the same thing, so we took it back, the dealer called the manufacturer and had the truck towed to the nearest chrysler dealer. this is where they replaced the engine at 65,500 miles, which the honda dealer paid for. i had the vehicle less than 1 month, and had to have a new motor, well that was 10/28/02 that they installed the motor, and now my truck is back in the shop 10/25/03 for another motor. this is because the dodge dealer says sludge caused malfunction in the engines ability to suck oil into the screen. of course they blamed me, saying that i did not change the oil enough, i provided them with some of my receipts, and my log of oil changes i did myself every 3 to 5,000 miles. they are refusing to cover the cost and said i have to get an attorney. i told them i was aware that durangos with 5.2 and 5.9 liter engines have oil pump and screen problems, again they refused to acknowledge and turned me away. now they are threatening to charge other charges like storage of the vehicle until my attorney decides what to do. *la

I own a 1999 dodge durango. i have had alot of trouble with it. at first when i would call or take it by the dealership, they would tell me that nothing was wrong. the first problem was with the steering wheel making a rattling noise between 20-30 mph. they first told me nothing was wrong it was tire noise. then i brought it back a week later and they replaced the catalytic converter. when it was still doing it a week later, i took it to another dealer and the steering column was found to be bent and replaced. not long after that i had trouble with the engine, when i would stop, the engine would idle down and almost stall. i stopped at a gas station and found i had no oil. i put in two quarts and called the dealer. they found the plenum gasket had a leak. i had that replaced for over $450. shortly after that i was traveling home on the highway and it hesitated and the check engine light came on. i took it into the dealer and they ran a diagnostics test and couldn't find anything wrong. i notice that the rpm's had started revving up and down while you were driving right after this happen. i called and questioned about it and they said to change the oil. it still did it after an oil change. while on our way home to ny, we had stopped and it stalled in the middle of the road and the check engine light came on again. when we got home i took it in and had another test done on it. they replaced the output speed sensor and said that was going to fix it. it still did the rpm thing after that, and they told me that i would have to pay for another diagnostics test. i have since, gotten a tune up and oil change, and it still does it. the check engine light keeps coming on and going off. i am sorry that this is so long, but i feel like i have tried everything and no one will help. my questions are, have you heard of anything like these problems before, are there any related recalls, and is there anything you can do to help get this resolved? i would appreciate any help! *nlm

Dt: the vehicle is 1999 dodge durango. the consumer needed the tires replaced and he had an independent mechanic check the ball joints at the same time. the mechanic told him that the front top and bottom ball joints were going bad, this was in 12-2004. the consumer knew there was a recall on similar vehicles. he contacted the manufacturer and they told him that his vehicle was not included in the recall. the consumer had to get the engine replaced because of a sludge problem. the engine blew up because of the oil pressure had failed on the vehicle, on 7-17-05. about 3-4 months prior the consumer had the oil and oil filter changed; and the bearings replaced. on 7-19-05 the engine was replaced. he had them check the ball joints again on 7-20-05. they told him that they would be afraid for him to drive it off the lot. consumer feels that the manufacture should replace this at their expense. *nm

The vehicle dies when coming to a stop, this has happened twice approximately 2 weeks apart. both times when it happened the gas gauge went to the empty position then after trying to restart after a few minutes the gauge started reading again and the vehicle started and ran fine. we took it to the dealer and all they did was let it sit there and idle to try to verify the complaint. they told us that there was nothing wrong with the vehicle. *nlm

My engine died with 44,000 miles due to sludge build-up dealership says i did'nt change my oil but i did and i have reciepts. i have all my paper work where i took it in for repairs for the guages going off and oil pressure dropping, having to put 2 qts of oil every 200 miles, knocking in motor, and now my warranty is out i have a blown engine. dealership refuses to accept any responsibility. my power windows and quit working in the summer could not roll down windows and the air condition was not blowing out cold air . gas tank strap broke with a full tank of gas & was being held on with only 1 strap, gas tank was hanging down. i have several more minor gripes but the main thing now is the engine. i have read over some consumer complaints web sites and it seems i'm not the only person having the same problem. dt

Had continous problem with the oil pressure guage flucuating, vehicle had been maintained, oil was always checked and changed when needed, told by mechanic faulty filter, said was no leaks but had to add oil at times. when it probably shouldn't have needed to, there seems to be a definite problem with this year and type of truck due to all the information found on the internet, dodge/chrysler should own up to their reputation and come clean, i will never buy anything that has to do with this company ever again. i was driving home with my daughter on the turnpike, the oil gauge kept dropping back and forth then all this tapping and loud noises from the engine, i pulled over and had to be towed home and was told i needed a new engine, you could see a hole, i got no satisfaction from the dealer or from the zone representative, she parroted the dealer and due to my financial status at this time i cannot afford nor do i believe i should have to put out a cent. this vehicle definitely needs to be investigated i believe it to be a lemon of a vehicle. dt

Fortunately there was no accident. i attribute that to using synthetic oil instead of regular oil. the oil pressure guage dropped to 0 then would go back to normal. this happened several times. i hope i got it into the dealer in time. the dealer thinks i did. the dealer claims the problem is sludge caused by too infrequent oil changes. i changed the oil within the guidelines listed in the owners manual. plus, synthetic oils are not subject to the same sludge problems as regular oils are. dealer dropped the pan, replace the screen and oil pump and cleaned as best they could. cost $809. this is the first vehicle i've owned (33 years) that has ever had a sludge problem. there has to be something in the design of the engine that contributes to this problem. dt

Drove vehicle from phila, pa area to scranton area for ski weekend. experienced no problems during this trip or previous to this trip. return ride back to phila area, oil pressure gauge began to fluctuate to zero then normal. it did this several times before hearing a ticking under he hood at highway speeds, pulled to the side of the road and engine shut down. vehicle had 28,800 miles at the time and six months left on 3/36 warranty. district manger for chrysler placed a restriction on the warranty due to excessive slude found in the valley of the engine. vehicle owners manual has two maintenance schedules for oil change, every 3k or every 7.5k; i produced maintenance records for oil changes every 7.5k. i have since found several tsb's on this vehilce regarding oil consumption, etc. i finally had the vehicle towed to the phila area where murray dodge in conshohocken, pa replaced the engine for $5.7k. the oil pump and oil pick up tube were covered under warrantee, but not the long block. it is distressing that the manufacturer will not warrant the repair even with maintenance records. i have found an article in a syndicated newspaper column which indicates that chrysler is at fault for having a mainteance schedule of 7.5k miles in the owners manual, the article also mentions a possible ventilation design flaw which causes condensation and sludge to build up. tsb # 9923 is in regards to oil seepage past the engine oil filter adapter plate gasket. my mechanic indicated to me that this may cause a ventilation problem with this engine. tsb#090699 is in regards to engine oil consumption due to intake manifold pan gasket oil leak. tsb# 090500 is regarding oil consumption due to leak also. i am uncertain if this is an engine problem or an oil pump problem. when i asked customer relations at chrysler, they indicated there were no reported problems with this engine. scranton dodge and murray dodge service managers also denied any problems with this engine.*a

As in many other cases listed on your site with this vehicle, my engine was found to have sludge, which blocked the oil pump (presumably) and the engine failed. i have proper maintenance records, yet the warranty company (american financial) maintains that i did not change the oil. one month prior to the failure, i took my vehicle to duluth dodge (the original dealer) complaining of fluctuating oil pressure. they replaced the oil pressure sending unit, and my engine failed 3,000 miles later (the oil was changed the day before i brought it to the dealer, and the recommendation is to change it every 7,500 miles). the warranty company promised to have the oil tested to resolve our dispute, but after numerous contacts with them (both verbal and written) they never did. therefore, i paid over $5,000 to have the engine replaced. i believe other models of vehicles with this engine (the 5.2 liter, or 318 cid) have similar problems. due to the large number of failures listed on your site alone, i believe this to be a major defect with the engine.*ak

Vehicle burned excessive oil prior to engine seize and we were told this was normal because of the volume of miles traveled on the vehicle. this was after a routine oil change at kenwood dodge. as usual we inquired as to any factory recalls. on our way to new hampshire to attend the funeral for a relative, my husband checked the oil as usual and it appeared to be fine. no oil was added at this time. after entering new hampshire in the town of pembrooke, the check gauges lite illuminated and then the oil pressure gauge dropped to 0. we immediately pulled into a local autozone car care store and my husband then checked the oil. the dipstick showed approximately 1.5 quarts low and so after setting for a short while of about 35 minutes and replenishing the oil, we proceeded on the rest of the journey. after traveling approximately 20 or so miles on the winding back roads my husband noticed an erratic, loud knocking sound coming from the engine. he then pulled the durango to the side of the road whereby the knocking was so loud your could not hear eachother talk. he then noticed the oil pressure dropped again to 0 and immediately shut down the engine. it banged loudly at this point as smoke spewed from the right front side of the truck. we had the durango towed to bonneville and sons dodge in manchester nh and the concurred the engine had seized. they had stated that the oil as well as the radiator fluid had leaked out and this was untrue as we had several people inspect the truck prior to their diagnosis and saw no external views of any fluid leakage. the radiator was full and the dipstick was seized in the engine block. the dealer as well as dodge said this was due to lack of oil changes. the oil was changed every 5-7 thousand miles regularly and was only three thousand miles past due from it's last change. i can't in my wildest dreams immagine this is the result of oil that was in the block at the time. we did find out however that this is common.*ak

The dodge durango was purchased in oct'1999. heading east on i-20 when we heard a clicking sound from the front end of suv. the clicking got louder. as we tried to accelerate to exit the s.c. highway, the clicking turned into a rattle and the suv began to stall and eventually quit. we had three children on board (19 months, 30 months, & 7 yrs). after waiting approx 3 hrs for family to arrive from ga, we had the suv towed to augusta dodge. their initial findings were that jiffy lube didn't replace the oil after the oil change we'd received just before getting on the hwy. dodge then said we had a hole in our engine. neither proved to be true. nationwide insurance concluded that the problem was mechanical. dodge admitted that they have 40 1999 v-8 engines backlogged in atlanta alone. we've discovered via mechanics that dodge's v-6 & v-8 engines are gumming up, resulting in a need for valve jobs, etc. this confirmed jiffy lube's observation that the oil seemed to be gumming up. suggesting a problem w/ oil pump. *ak

In september, a noise that i had thought to be a wind noise was identified to me by a passenger as engine knocking. the truck, which had been in to the dealer numerous times already for other issues, was brought to the dealer for checking. we were advised, contrary to the manual's suggestions, to try a higher octane fuel. the noise did not go away and we brought the truck back in in early november. we were told that there was a ftsb coming from the manufacturer. after a number of days they called and told me nothing was coming up and to take the truck back home. i did not hear from them for some time and the knocking was getting worse so i returned the truck for repairs. repairs were attempted twice after this with nothing correcting the problem. i just called the service department today to let them know that i was hearing the pinging again and i was told that the tsb they had expected 2 months ago was still supposed to come out and they want me to wait. this was their response when i told them i was tired of bringing the truck in for this repair and i felt that the truck was becoming more and more damaged as a result of the pinging. *ak

1999 dodge durango. multiple problems with vehicle. 6,000 miles freeze plug; 48,691 tie rod end outer, serpentine belt; 63,851 transmission speed sensor; 66,002 miles ball joints front upper; 68,175 miles ball joints lower.*ak consumer paid out-of-pocket for each incident. i had extended insurance that was paid for when truck was bought, but was not given any information about it. never recieved any info from fedelity insurance about extended insurance. during investigation, by myself, to report incidents to daimler chrysler discovered on bill of sale that extended insurance had been paid for. contacted daimler chrysler and fidelity insurance. daimler chrysler reimbursed for parts of tie rods & upper ball joints; they refused to pay for anything else and claimed it was due to consumer's failure to maintain vehicle. fidelity insurance would only refund up to a year from initial report of 08/04/04. refused to reimburse for anything before. submitted all documentation to fidelity, but have yet to recieve any reimbursement. final incident on 09/04/04 has not yet been addressed by daimler chrysler nor fidelity insurance. truck has had multiple incidents of needing service -- all of which should not have to be replaced under 68,000 miles. dodge refuses to take responsabilty of defective parts and vehicle. i have read multiple incident on-line of other durango owners and mine is minor compaired to some. everyone has had to replace ball joint, but multiple people have had to replace transmittions a number of time. i am stuck with a defective vehicle that if not gotten rid of will cost me thousands of dollars. my truck is paid off as of 10/2004, extended insurance is up at 72,000 miles. i am unable to afford buying another car that is appropriate to my family situation.

While driving at 60 mph, vehicle began to lose power and lurch. shortly after, smoke began to appear from center console and hvac ducts as engine stopped running. vehicle was safely maneuvered onto shoulder and stopped; by then heavy smoke was pouring from center console area and hvac vents. driver bailed out and watched from the side of the road as interior completely filled with smoke. vehicle was towed to mechanic, subsequent examination determined underbody sound dampening mat had been ignited by overheated catalytic converter. burning underbody mat subsequently caused extensive thermal damage to center console, carpet, and hvac ducts inside console. root cause of catalytic converter overheating was attributed by dealer mechanic to possible intermittent connection of coil wire, allowing excessively rich fuel/air mixture to be passed to catalytic converter. *ak

I don't who else to go to, dodge durangos need a recall on several issues. ball joints for one, plenum gasket, and the computer brain system is junk and dodge will not take any responsibility for these issues. these trucks cost too much money to have the issues they have. these are lemons and once you buy it your stuck with it. i have owned mine a little over 2 months and i think i have been able to drive it a total of 3 weeks, not all in a row. it is junk and how can i resell junk? i don't want to have someone come back to me because i sold them junk, but i can not afford to own this vehicle. something should be done.*ak

We have been told by our local dealership that the ball joints are worn, and are excessively wearing our brand new set of tires. we are very upset that dodge is not doing anything about this obvious problem. we have never had a vehicle with so many issues before, the intake gasket, the abs sensor, the seal on rear axle, a seat belt that wouldn't work, and now this. very unhappy with the vehicle as a whole.*ak

*la

Oil pressure dropped to zero and engine stalled. luckily i was on a side road going very slowly. the vehicle was towed to a dodge dealership where the manifold was removed revealing sludge covering everything inside. chrysler claim problem caused by lack of maintenance. the vehicle has had regular oil changes according to the owner's manual which is at 7500 miles as i do all highway driving. chrysler will not replace under warranty and say we need to replace the engine. after having the car towed home and looking at the block it is obvious that there is not enough drainage in the block. there are pockets all along the inside where oil could not possibly escape unless the car was literally turned upside down. these engine are defective. all durango owners need help to ensure that chrysler replaces all of these lemons. please help us.*ak
