I bought a 1999 dodge durango slt 5.2 ltr engine as of 3 to 4 yrs ago, and in some cases like mine, it absolutely does mean it can be an absolutely unreliable & absolute dangerous vehicle!!!!! ..everything that can happen, has happened to this vehicle. engine stalls out, the front differential exploded on the highway 4 miles after i had to put in 4 wheel drive & almost caused me to wreck,i had to replace the whole front differential axles.. the back (rear) breaks have never worked since i bought the thing, the exhaust manifolds got so hot that the bolts that connect it to the manifold pipes burned off and is now, and has been sitting for a month since i can't keep it together. right now all three of my front brake lines have rotted into, at the connector from the master cylinder that sends the fluid to the front 2 wheels!!.. that's just the start of all of the terrible danger that it poses to me and other drivers on the road. this vehicle should be considered a complete recall of the 1999 dodge durango slt. the dodge manufacture should not get by with this. its almost like selling a device to get hurt in. i paid over 4,000.00 for this durango, just to spend that much more money and the chance of getting hurt or worse while having it rebuilt where it is suppose to be safe. ....other things that have stopped working also.. motor oil & transmission leaks & slips, windows (2 of them) have stopped working up & down, glove box latch broke, ash tray broke off, rear hatch will not open, hatch wiper shorted out, front end tires spraddle out like they are going 2 different directions, the paint finish has completely faded from the hood & starting in other places, starter solenoid clicks 10 to 30 times before it will crank the engine...there is more also!.. this is not a safe vehicle!! i have never had trouble like this with any other automobile in all of my 45 driving years. *tr

Warm weather the engine quits. 3 time within two weeks driving 65-70 mph on highway while pulling a boat all 3 times. the problem is the pcm on the passengers side of the engine compartment. gets to hot and shuts the engine down. no brakes, no steering! this problem is documented in dodge forums thousands of times with everyone quoting the exact same issues with nothing being done nor any fixes that will work.

My 1999 dodge durango would shut down and all the gauges would go to 0. lost power steering and power brakes. my wife almost had a t-bone crash with a semi truck in orem, ut. after doing my research, it is obvious that dodge failed in their responsibility to the consumer. the pcm (powertrain control module) goes bad in specifically the 1999 durango's and below are a bunch of testimonies that it is a common problem. this is dangerous and someone could end up dead. - http://www.automotivehelper.com/topic91464.htm - http://www.carsurvey.org/viewmorecomments_review_41149_4.html - http://www.carcomplaints.com/dodge/durango/1999/electrical/vehicle_shuts_down_without_warning.shtml the below website will show that this is the biggest problem with the 1999 dodge durango. http://www.carcomplaints.com/dodge/durango/1999/electrical/index.shtml i just spent over $1,000 replacing my pcm to fix the problem. mor importantly, my wife and kids almost got in an accident. i would like to see this recalled, as it could potentially cause death or injury. this problem should be fixed by dodge as a recall, not by the consumer. *tr

My dodge durango (1999) started stalling at random times two summers ago. it took me many trips to the dealer and alot of research on the internet and a yell fest with the dodge field rep. but i got it fixed. they had no idea what was wrong with it, it is the pcm(power control module).....finally convinced them they didn't want a lawsuit on their hands if my family was killed due to this major defect in durangos, mainly 1999 from what i have read. pcm replaced, no problems with stalling since. *tr

Transmission went out suddenly. we noticed it making a whining noise when shifted into reverse. this stopped when shifted into drive. after approx. two days the noise stayed in drive. changed the fan belt and checked other minor things. read manuals and suspected trans trouble, took it in and it needed to be rebuilt. the pan was filled with pieces of metal. we also had to have the left upper ball joint replaced at 55,548 miles, this was going on a long time and caused significant tire wear.

Durango has given transmission problems including high rev before shifting, and rough shifting in general.problem will always occur if allowed to idle for a few minutes before resuming movement. has appeared to slip on occasions. pinion broke with vehicle in no apparent strain with very slight acceleration on take-off- caused major rear end damage as well as ruining one rear axle. contacted dodge concering problem since part broke was 1.5 inch thick steel which broke so smoothly, it appeared to have been cut. part should have been with vehicle 50 years from now when it is in a junk-yard! was informed that since vehicle was out of warranty, that nothing could be compensated for. fortunately, this did not happen on the open road, or my wife and children could have been injured or killed. i feel dodge should at the very least reimburse us for this problem as well as the transmission woes!

Engine lost oil pressure first at 39933 miles while the car was still under warranty. the dealership changed the oil pump and advised us of sludge build up in the engine. the same problem at 63025 miles along with a transmission overhaul. the dealership at which we purchased the truck replaced the oil pump again, advised of sludge build up and overhauled the transmission under warranty. they also checked on the cost of a new engine but chrysler would not cover it, so they simply replaced the oil pump. same problem for the 3rd time at 73825 miles, less than 12 months and 12000 miles later. the service department at the dealership admits that replacing the oil pump will not help. they need to clean the sludge out for it to run better but even this will not solve the problem. unless the entire engine is taken apart and soaked clean or chrysler supplies a new engine, we will always have this problem. regular oil changes were completed on this vehicle. after the first oil pump the dealer advised that i using synthetic oil, which was done. after the 2nd oil pump was replaced the dealer said that the synthetic oil would not make any difference. *nlm

Transmission in my 1999 dodge durango has begun to slip and its pulling hard. it won't go into 2nd or 3rd without me depress the gas pedal. i've tried transmission fix lubricant, changed the fluid and filter, and tuneup. i've been reading from several websites that people are having the same problem with the transmission and dodge won't do anything about it. people work too hard to have their vehicles maintained and getting a rebuilt or brand new one will cost thousands of dollars that normal people like myself don't have. is it anything you can do about this so that people like myself can have a peace of mind knowing that the transmission is in working condition and its safe. *tr

1999 dodge durango-so many problems with this vehicle. had to replace the computer due to overheating-common problem i hear. now the upper and lower ball joints are bad and need replaced or my tires could fall off? lots of information that this is an extremely common problem and very very dangerous. other years of derange have been recalled because of ball joints being bad. i have not had an accident yet and am hoping not to. can't afford all these repairs for things that seem to be a common issue with this vehicle. *tr

I own a 1999 dodge durango, and like many, almost scary amounts of other dodge customers, am having numerous issues with this vehicle which provide extreme safety hazards to the drivers and occupants. one of which is an upper ball joint issue, which was recalled on the 2000 model year, but not other years with the same design flaw. another of which is the automatic transmission not shifting properly, or at all rendering the vehicle 'in neutral' at times while in traffic. also, a problem, which is starting to occur involves the vehicle to shut down out of nowhere in traffic, leaving the driver to try to navigate this beast to the side of the road without power brakesw/steering etc. if you search the internet, you will find literally thousands of people with these problems, severely endangering every man, woman and child who occupy these trucks. dodge dealers constantly give owners a runaround and deny they have heard any other claims of these problems. these trucks are unsafe! chrysler needs to know that, and do something about it! *tr

I have had repeated problems with my '99 dodge durango that started with the engine light going on in september 27, 2005 and is now the need for a new cpm. the car intermittent stalls while riding down the road at 55mph or after idling at stop light & turning left (power steering goes out and car blocks intersection/traffic) - no bus appears on mileage, everything shuts off. seems to happens on days when the environmental temperature exceeds 75 degrees and disappears once car has sat (wherever it stalled) for 20-30minutes. no diagnostic code appears when put the car is put on the computer and i was advised by more then one dealership that the problem had to get worse and produce a code before dealership or anyone else could diagnose the problem. now that the 8 yr federal powertrain warranty has expired for me, it seems the problem is &always was that the powertrain control module (pcm) is malfunctioning &needs to be replaced. this major component is covered thru 8yrs/80,000 mi by federal law but even though problem began prior to 8th year, because this problem was not diagnosed until after my 8 yrs had been exceeded, it is now my $800-$1200 bill to pay (since sept '05, have replaced most components of coolant system, intake manifold pan gasket, head gasket &still have problem with alignment/ball joints& repeated window modulator problems). *tr

I purchased a 1999 durango in jan of 2000. i have had numerous problems including rebuilding the transmission. my biggest complaint is the engine sludge and spark knock. i have had the oil pump and screen replaced twice as well as the upper intake gaskets. it is my understanding that the upper intake gaskets leak internally causing oil consumption, spark knock, and eventually oil sludge and engine failure. chrysler should do something about the thousands of vehicles that are experiencing these issues. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated that the engine malfunctioned in the vehicle as early as june first of 2005. the vehicle was taken to the dealers and left with them for one week to under-go diagnostic testing. the dealer determined through the testing that the problem was pertaining to the fuel pump and replaced the part. the vehicle began to experience more problems concerning stalling and all the warning lights illuminating. the vehicle was taken back to the dealers who replaced the water pump. one week later, the vehicle experienced similar problems including water dripping from the bottom of the motor. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who replaced gasket of the water pump. the vehicle stalled while driving on the highway during morning rush hour traveling at 30 mph. it was towed to the dealer who determined that the #3 cylinder had no compression, the coolant was coming out of the freeze plug, transmission fluid was dripping and the motor was shot. there were no further services done to the vehicle due to the extensive costs.

I have a 1999 dodge durango with 73,000 miles. we had the transmission replaced and other major repairs done to it last year. since then it has given us nothing but trouble. this car is our family car so we travel everywhere with the kids in the back. it has stalled and died on us often. at times on the freeway in the middle of traffic and other times in the middle of intersections. the power steering goes and so do the brakes. i have been lucky so far in avoiding accidents. the mechanics can not find out what is wrong with it so nothing is done about it. the fuel lines have been checked and replaced and so has the fuel pump and the same problem continues. *jb

In january of 05 had to have both upper and lower ball joints replaced, control arm, front brakes and new tires as a result of bad f/e suspension. now today the speed sensor (and i am hoping that's it) has gone out on the transmission. i have had two window motor failures, a sudden drop in oil pressure causing the truck to stall and there is something wrong with the electrical system. there have been many complaints in regards to these failures and the dodge durango and although they have recalled other dodge trucks for these issues - they have yet to have recalled the 1999. i have contacted dodge since january of this year regarding this issue and they responded telling me that they hadn't had enough complaints to issue a recall. i find this hard to believe seeing all the complaints made to nhtsa and to consumer affairs in regards to this year and model. i also believe that the dodge dealer i bought this truck from (used) sold it to me knowing of these problems - although this i doubt i could ever prove. i am thankful that the front wheels stayed on as long as they did as i have read of the ball joint issue causing wheel separation. this could have been a deadly situation for my family (4 small children - we rely on this as our only transportation) and i hope that the problem is fixed but have serious doubts. *nm

At christmastime our transmission began acting up. we believed the harsh winter weather was causing the problem bc once the engine heated up, the vehicle drove just fine. at any rate, we took in to be serviced in march and had the 4x4 rear differentials flushed and serviced and the fluid changed. while it was in for that repair (at a dealership) they called and said the 2 front ball joints needed to be replaced. we knew about the recall, so asked them about it, but it just figures our vin was not included. so, $1600 later, we went and picked it up and seemed to drive just fine. well, then 3 wks. later i was driving to the grocery store. i was stopped a red light, and when it turned green i went to go and it just barely accelerated. luckily, the red light was right in front of the garage we normally use. i was able to turn the vehicle around and get it to where i was parked in front of the garage. i went in and told the mechanic what happened. the truck was in the shop for 2 wks. it needed a new transmission after having just been serviced! it cost $3300! over the past 2 months we have spent $4600 in repairs on a vehicle that we are still paying for! i am irrate! we even bought the extended warranty when we purchased the vehicle 5 yrs. ago, but now with 108,000 miles it's not covered any longer (warranty only went to 100,000). 2 yrs. ago i was involved in an accident with durango where the front drivers side wheel popped off after another vehicle hit it. we don't believe he could have hit it with enough force for that to happen if it had not been defective to begin with. his wife even spoke to me about this last christmas after the recall came out. i am fed up with this truck and i want dodge to know it.

We purchased this vehicle from v & h ford inc, marshfield, wi. in june 2003. the next day after i got it i started it & it started to squeal. my husband noticed transmission fluid leaking as well. we took it back to the dealer, we were told that the fan clutch & serpentine belt were shot, as well as a little leak in the transmission. they put some kind of sealer on it & continued to leak. (also during all of this time, our rpm's kept jumping.) after the 3rd time, they said they did a factory authorized repair & put what was referred to as a cock ring in it to seal it. this seams to have taken care of this. then when the truck was put in reverse it kept clunking, the u-joints went out next, then the latch broke on our glove box. meanwhile the rpm's keep jumping, it has been back in the shop a total of probably 7 to 8 times so far. our service engine light came on & flashed the code of fuel injector #8, when it was put through the diagnostic test, however we are learning this is still not the problem. last weekend i was going to put the truck in the garage. i put in drive, and it took off on me without me even touching the gas. it has done this several times now while on the road. now for the past week, when you leave a stop sign, it will shift once and stay at about 3000 - 3500 rpm and will not shift until you are ready to stop. when you try to stop the trottle sticks and the truck wants to go. we are at loss what to do. we have obviously purchased a lemon that it a hazard to be on the road. to trade it in or try to sell it outright seems to be a crime, because we know the horrible things wrong with it. i am certain that it is only a matter of time before my husband & i and our 2 children are seriously hurt or killed by the spuratic behavior of this dangerous vehicle. please advise us what to do. is there a lemon law or any thing that can help us. meanwhile, we are stuck making payments on this . *ak

Pcm failure. was driving on highway at 75mph when i lost all power( i.e. steering, brakes, etc.) and the engine died. tried restarting and the odometer flashed a warning code. 30 minutes later it started. i only got about two miles away and it happened again. contacted local dodge dealer and they said that it was a fairly common thing but since my warranty was over that i was on my own. a week later i was driving it and the same problem happened. this time i ended up in a ditch because i lost the ability to stop and steer. i replaced the pcm and the problem was resolved. it should have been covered by dodge seeing that there are over 300 cases alone that people have put on the web about this exact issue. does someone have to die or something for dodge to take credit for their mistake? 4 months ago the abs system went out as well. again, found that 100's have reported this same issue to dodge. *tr

Gear shift can be engaged without depressing the brake pedal. it appears that this can be an issue for safety. the rear windows when open at a speed of 50mph create a wobbling in the steering ability as well as discomfort to the ears. also, the rear windows retract all the way into the door which appears to create a possible hazard. the third seat does not appear to lock in place is there any hazards associated with the seat collapsing in a front end or rear end collision?

I've been complaining of abnormal noises coming from my 1999 dodge durango since may of 2003, to 2 different dodge dealer service departments. the steering is loose and the tires wear unevenly no matter how many times i have them rotated. after a very scary road trip where i almost veered off the highway several times, i brought the durango to a private mechanic. they immediately detected the problem of faulty ball joints and a bad rear axle and differential. when the mechanic called dodge to order parts, he was told that this is a common problem with durango's and the parts were in stock. repairs consisted of new upper and lower ball joints, new front tires (with alignment) repair and rebuild rear axle and differential. this was all paid for by me personally because my extended warranty expired in june 2005. however, i believe it would have been covered under the warranty if in may 2003 the dodge mechanics would have figured out what the problems were. *nm there was a water leak at the right rear window. updated 04/10/06. *jb

Problem: rear axle pinion bearing fails, causing damage to pinion gear and ring gear. at each repair attempt, bearings, cups and seals are replaced, repairs have lasted about 2000 miles, 500miles and twice at under 100 miles. the problem has been addressed 4 times, once at a dodge dearlership other than the one where we purchased the vehicle and 3 times at the purchasing dealership. the last repairs included replacing the rearend housing, now though, within 100 miles, the problem has returned. at last tear down of the rearend, the pinion gear's teeth were chipped. this fact is what scares myself and my wife, a complete failure of the pinion gear at highway speeds could be disastrous. we have contacted the manufacture about the numerous repairs and failures through certified mail, my only contact with them is to say they received the notice and then the purchasing dealership's service manager called to voice his hostilities to us as to why we went over his head with this! i feel this problem is a possible safety issue and needs to be addressed, we are having to drive the defective vehicle because we have no other available vehicle.....it is scary.

*ak
