On multiple occasions, beginning two months after we bought the vehicle (used), engine would die for no reason. loss of power steering and power brakes. would turn over, but not restart. after waiting between 10-30 minutes, vehicle would restart. happens at slow speeds, medium speeds and expressway speeds. inconvenient at slow speeds, very dangerous at highway speeds. sounds similar to other complaints regarding cpu/cpm overheating. dodge needs to recall this before someone gets killed! *tr

I bought a 1999 dodge durango slt 5.2 ltr engine as of 3 to 4 yrs ago, and in some cases like mine, it absolutely does mean it can be an absolutely unreliable & absolute dangerous vehicle!!!!! ..everything that can happen, has happened to this vehicle. engine stalls out, the front differential exploded on the highway 4 miles after i had to put in 4 wheel drive & almost caused me to wreck,i had to replace the whole front differential axles.. the back (rear) breaks have never worked since i bought the thing, the exhaust manifolds got so hot that the bolts that connect it to the manifold pipes burned off and is now, and has been sitting for a month since i can't keep it together. right now all three of my front brake lines have rotted into, at the connector from the master cylinder that sends the fluid to the front 2 wheels!!.. that's just the start of all of the terrible danger that it poses to me and other drivers on the road. this vehicle should be considered a complete recall of the 1999 dodge durango slt. the dodge manufacture should not get by with this. its almost like selling a device to get hurt in. i paid over 4,000.00 for this durango, just to spend that much more money and the chance of getting hurt or worse while having it rebuilt where it is suppose to be safe. ....other things that have stopped working also.. motor oil & transmission leaks & slips, windows (2 of them) have stopped working up & down, glove box latch broke, ash tray broke off, rear hatch will not open, hatch wiper shorted out, front end tires spraddle out like they are going 2 different directions, the paint finish has completely faded from the hood & starting in other places, starter solenoid clicks 10 to 30 times before it will crank the engine...there is more also!.. this is not a safe vehicle!! i have never had trouble like this with any other automobile in all of my 45 driving years. *tr

I bought my 99 durango 3 months ago & the ball joints are popping & something in the rear is squeaking like an old matress & the brakes already need replaced & the ac doesnt work. my concern is the number of complaints i have seen regarding accidents from the ball joints breaking & not being able to steer. if this has been an on going issue with vehicles that have low mileage there should be a recall & dodge pay for the repairs when peoples lives are in danger. do you really want another toyota issue?

When driving at highway speeds the engine will suddenly shut off losing power steering and brakes. after sitting for 10 to 30 minutes it will restart and run for an additional distance until shutting off and repeating the same symptoms again. it will sometimes perform normally for days until once again quitting for no reason. multiple components have been replaced without correcting the problem. dodge denies there being any problems with the vehicle but there are many instances of the same condition being reported on internet sites from around the country.

Early generation dodge durango (98-01) has abs problems, causing abs to shut down, leaving the brake pedal very low. i have researched this to be a very common problem and the vehicle was never recalled on this. fix to problem seems to only be a complete brake system rebuild, with aftermarket parts to fix the problem and not have it return again. i have heard that some people have lost their lives due to this problem and i think it should be addressed even though these vehicles are old, they are not safe and need to be recalled for the owners and everyone safety around them. *tr

We have had a litany of problems with the abs system, the last one being in october 2008. the mechanic replaced a sensor and it was fine until 1/8/2009. while driving the car the abs motor switched on and wouldn't turn off, even with the engine off. dobbs auto had to disconnect the unit and tried to order the new module, but it backordered until january 30,2009. i now have to drive the car without any abs brakes and it will cost over $900 to replace module. since it is backordered the mechanic believes that is an indication of a defect with module and thus i think it should be replaces by dodge, no cost to me. when i notified dodge they told me one of their mechanics would have to look at it. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 dodge durango. while driving approximately 40 mph in rainy weather conditions, the vehicle did not stop when the brake pedal was depressed and he crashed into a vehicle. the vehicle would not stop even after the contact repeatedly applied pressure to the brakes. he stated that if the braking unit was functioning normally he would have had ample time to avoid a crash. after close inspection of the vehicle, he noticed that the brake assembly pin that connects the master cylinder to the braking unit had severe corrosion on the inside, which caused it to fracture. the vehicle failed and was completely destroyed. the manufacturer sent an investigator to inspect the vehicle and it was discovered that there was no recall for that component; therefore, they could not assume any financial responsibility. the contact has pictures of the failed component. the failure and current mileages were 106,599. updated 11/12/08 *bf the tow truck driver found a half inch thick piece of steel on the floor below the brake pedal. as it turned out, a half inch thick piece of steel pin that connected the brake pedal to the master cylinder had sheared off. updated 11/13/08. *jb

1999 dodge durango experienced problems with control arms and ball joint failures.*mr the consumer had all the ball joints replaced in late 2003 after hearing incidents from the media. in late 2004, the consumer was involved in a minor low speed accident and the left control arm assembly including the left ball joint were replaced. (the consumer did not state if there was damage to the vehicle). after the repair the consumes wife started to hear a popping sound, the vehicle was returned to the dealer but no problem was found but they did check all the bolts and tightened to specs. immediately after picking up the vehicle the noise was still there. the consumer inspected the vehicle himself by removing the left front tire and wheel assembly and found the cotter pin installation poorly done on the upper ball joint. the consumer then found the lower control arm assembly which had previously been repaired to be poorly done as well. the brakes squeaked, but the consumer declined the repairs. *jb

I have been reading the existing complaints, and would like to add mine. i just had a failed wheel bearing on the driver's side of my 1999 dodge durango repaired. the service manager stated that he didn't know if or when the right hand side one would fail, but also that both lower ball joints were defective. the cost of just the wheel bearing repair was expensive, but the ball joint repair would be nearly double that. our problem is that we just cannot afford the repairs on this vehicle. in the past six months, we have had to replace a faulty transmission sensor and the wheel bearing. we now have learned of the ball joint failure, as well as the failure of the air conditioning system, plus a rear wheel abs sensor that failed. all told, we are now facing over $2000 in repairs, this after spending $1500 for the prior ones. i have seen over 500 complaints about the ball joints on this year of car. please force a recall before someone gets seriously injured. thank you. *jb

Brakes on 99 durango do not work at times. other times the brakes work fine. it seems that when the road is wet or high humidity the brakes do not work. it is a very scary feeling to hit the brakes and not have any response. after a 1 to 2 second delay the brakes finally engage. i have had to swerve to the shoulder on numerous occasions when trying to stop on the freeway so as to not hit the car in front of me. i have replaced the brakes and rotors at my cost and the problem persists. the biggest problem is that you never know when the brakes will work and when they will not. i am not a mechanic, but i wonder if it is in the abs system. reading this forum it appears that many others have experienced the same problems. *cb

Poor brakes with the 2 wheel abs system at dodge durango 1999. the breaking power is mainly on rear tires, and when they lock up the abs system release the brakes which result in an not acceptable braking length, especially at slippery surface and/or bad tires. this is due to the combination of 2 wheel abs system togheter with the main braking power on the rear tires, i have had my vehicle checked, it is in good working condition. this is a major safety issue at the durango, poorly designed braking system. i have not had an accident yet due to this, but i am afraid it might happen even though i drive extra carefully because i am aware of this problem.*ak

Traveling on the freeway in rush hour traffic when suddenly i had no brakes, steering, and all gauges were flatlined.it was rush hour traffic so i was able to muscle the steering to get into the break down lane and used the emergency brake to come to a safe stop. shut the vehicle off and called the dodge dealer. after about 5 minutes the vehicle restarted and all systems were operating correctly. my husband took the vehicle to the dealership. i explained what happened and thanks to a persistant tech they feel the problem has been rectified. the temp that day was in the 80's and i had the air conditioning on with the traffic moving slowly. they feel that the idle air control motor which should normally be in the teens was operating at 54+and barely moving then when the compressor kicked on for the air conditioning it caused the motor to overheat and stalled the vehicle. the dealership worked very hard to help resolve this problem and if this is the answer than hopefully what he found will help other technicians who are having durango's brought to them with the same problem repair the vehicle. i really cannot express enough how hard the technician worked to help me with this. he went so far as to take the vehicle home one evening to see if he could get the same problem to happen again. *ak

Beginning in january of 2000 of brakes have malfunctioned. we have experienced our brakes not working at all causing us to run through red lights and past stop signs. our back brakes have locked up on us on multiple occassions causing us to have to swerve to avoid causing wrecks. on multiple occassions we have left black skid marks on pavement due to back brakes locking up. these breaking problems have happened at speeds varying from 5 miles per hour to 65 miles per hour. this vehicle has been in for repair on the brakes on 7 seperate occassions with repairs ranging from cleaning and adjustments to changing of calipers. on 1/14/200 the dx was brakes dirty and needed adjusted. on 2/3/00 dx calipers not working. 3/23/00 calipers replaced. on 11/10/2000 brakes were cleaned and adjusted. we picked up our vehicle today 1/13/01 for repair on brakes. we complained that again brakes are locking up and failing. the brakes were again cleaned and adjusted per technician. from the date of purchase our rear latch has not locked. 1/14/2000 dx rear lock assy failure. 2/3/00 assembly replaced. 3/23/00 the dx was accuator . 10/17/2000 accuator replaced. 1/13/01 technician made another internal repair in ac/heater system. on 10/17/2000 we notified berry motor that we were smelling our firecracker smell and smell noticable when air conditioning on because it would bring smell into vehicle. no dx noted at that time. 11/10/2000 vehicle in for overheating problems. dx. gasket leaking. we recently experienced overheating again. today's (1/13/01) dx thermastat failure and warped thermastat housing. we have many things go wrong with this vehicle; however, our biggest concern is the brake malfunctioning. we have been told by the dealership that the new anti-lock brakes our made out of a new material which is effected by dirt. they state that when these brakes get dirty, it will cause them to not function correctly. *ak

*cb

When i pushased my 1999 dodge durango the brakes was nosiy...took it back to the dealer.they charged me $90.00 to do a brake service.after the brakes was used a couple of times they started making nosie again...took it back and dealer stated that it was the pads and they could not do anything about it. well after that i was fed up with them and took it to a goodyear shop where they replaced the brakes.(stopped the nosie) and also found out the upper ball joints was bad along with the shocks...so they was replaced costing me $1,300.00. so much for the extended warenties that i purchased with the vehicle..the dealer also charged me for fliud after two sensors went out that was located inside the transmission..wich the warenty was to cover the drive train..this vehicle is a 1999 dodge durango 4x4....new tires had to be purchased because of ball joints was bad causeing tires to wear wrong

Abs light & brake warning lights come on intermittently while driving, when lights were on brakes were touchy. and forget trying to slow or stop when it's raining. front driver side control arms, ball joints, and bushings replaced. upper and lower a-arm bushings have been replaced several times due to noise in front end. dodge dealer could not diagnose this noise or any problem when we took it to them. after two days of it sitting at the dealer we mysteriously had a badly leaking water pump. when we decided not to have the dealer complete the repair they made us pay them a diagnostic fee of $78.00! two sets of brand new brakes squeaked annoyingly after repeated attempts at lubrication and cleaning, rotors now need replacing. rear passenger, & front driver power window motors replaced, twice for the rear one. bad brakes & bad suspension did not mix well when you're a mother of four very active kids. sometimes i was scared to drive . the cost has become ridiculous and at times unreasonable. *ak

1999 dodge durango, bought new, has 53,000 miles, i was driving on a highway on 4/22/05,check gauges lit up on dashboard, oil pressure gauge went to zero, car still drivable, pulled over after 3-4 miles into turnpike service area, checked oil stick and it read full, continued additional drive to destination of approx. 5 miles and dropped off at nearby dodge dealership, their diagnosis is sludge in engine and oil pump has to be replaced and the entire engine will have to be replaced, they suspect lousy maintenenace by car owner regarding oil changes, i have documentation that car was well maintained, on a internet search, i found that hundreds of durango owners have experienced the exact problems with this type of vehicle. in addition, i have experienced other problems with my vehicle: replaced window moter, replaced leak in cooling system thermostat, replaced switch assembly for a/c heating unit, replaced brakes and rotors on front.*ak

I have had to replace my ball joints on my 1999 dodge durango twice in three years. i also found out today that i needed a new hub assembly. i know there are lot of people experiencing similar problems with this vehicle and want to know if there is anything that can be done to have daimler/chrysler fix this problem. i also, know that there is a recall for 2000-2004 models, but what about 1999 models. it seems as though similar problems exist with premature aging of the ball joints and other front end components. *ak

2 weeks ago i had the rear brakes lock-up under less than moderate pressure. the dealership adjusted the brakes and charged me 35.00. then on 5-15 they locked-up again with the same amount of break pressure. there is virtually no warning except the brake pedal is a little stiffer. after the brakes were adjusted i did notice that my mileage increased almost 2mpg (so it's obvious they must have been draggging) i contacted chrysler customer service and they said it was a vehicle maintence problem. the vehicle is less than 2 years old and less than 16,000 miles so it shouldn't need any rear brake adjustment. the rear are self adjusting anyway. i feel that this is a major safety concern especially since i transport my wife and child in this vehicle. chrysler said my complaint was the only one which i understand i may have lemon brakes on my vehicle. i commute on the capital beltway everyday and have locked-up the brakes at around 55 to 60 mph a few times. i hope this issue is taken seriously because my wife is afraid to drive this vehicle any longer. thank you for your time. paul d. allen. *ak

I was driving on a local city streetwhen the driver in front of me braked hard because the car in front of him decided to turn into a driveway immediately following an intersection. i of course braked hard and the brake pedal in my 1999 dodge durango broke and went all the way to the floor, as it turns out there is a pin that goes through the brake pedal arm and the head of it (the part that actually applies the the brakes) broke off. i hit the people in front of me damaging their trunk and the front of my durango. there was not extensive damage to either vehicle, although it did puncture my radiator and all of the coolant ran out. so at this point the vehicle can not be driven. still have the broken pin and it's obvious that there was a flaw in it where it broke. *ak
