On multiple occasions, beginning two months after we bought the vehicle (used), engine would die for no reason. loss of power steering and power brakes. would turn over, but not restart. after waiting between 10-30 minutes, vehicle would restart. happens at slow speeds, medium speeds and expressway speeds. inconvenient at slow speeds, very dangerous at highway speeds. sounds similar to other complaints regarding cpu/cpm overheating. dodge needs to recall this before someone gets killed! *tr

I was driving on the highway at 65mph, and the vehicle shut off completely. lost power steering, power brakes, everything. had 3 small children in the car and had to with all my power (i am 5'9 235 lbs) navigate the vehicle to the side of the road. i have found this is extremely common problem with this vehicle. many of the posts state is a manufacturing flaw of where the pcm is placed in the engine.

Steering problems related to linkage affected by brake resivoir leakage onto linkage to the gear box. fluid ate rubber off of the joints that look to be like that of a u-joint. the first time was a safety issue involving an oversteer situation and the underlying condition was not explained or repaired. the linkage was replaced. one year or so later the durango began to repeat the above situation on an interstate highway at speeds of over 65 miles per hour. again the linkage was replaced and the master cylinder {not including the resivoir} was replaced at my expense due to the age of my vehicle {or lack of warranty}. the problem still exsists because i have no job to pay for repairs or a different vehicle. i have replaced linkage x2 and master cylinder for this situation, also had axel hubs {sealed units} fail due to dry bearing, both sides front. oem replacement parts both failed due to dry bearings in less than 12 months. this also caused a dangerous condition at highway speeds. wobble and oversteering conditions. prior to these problems the rear sway bar links had disintegrated and were replaced. this vehicle has done no off road 4x4 action for as long as i have owned it. thank you !!

Car auto-stopped while conducting driving lesson for my 15-year-old stepdaughter. we were traveling 40mph on a country road at the time. she drifted off the side of the road, said the steering wheel was stuck. i told her to apply the brakes. she said she was and they weren't working either. we went through a stop sign and were very nearly t-boned by cars from both directions. my stepdaughter sensibly did as i instructed and pushed as hard as possible on the brake, managed to stop the car before plunging into the river in front of us. i had been having problems with the car for six months previous to this incident. two diagnostics reported that the vehicle was auto-stopping but not why this was occurring. a local mechanic suggested it was probably the gas gauge sensor in the fuel pump which made sense to me because everything but the gas gauge worked whenever the car auto-stopped. it would typically restart within 15 minutes or so. i assumed we had solved the problem when the mechanic replaced the fuel pump. i know now that the fuel pump was not the problem although i don't know what is wrong with the car. i have researched this on the internet and found there are hundreds of other people going through the same difficulties with 1999 dodge durangos. my wife, stepdaughter and i were very lucky not to have been seriously injured during the driving lesson. this situation needs to be addressed before someone is hurt (if they haven't been already). *tr

I own a 1999 durango and a 2001 dakota both have loose intermediate shafts. the steering is very loose in both trucks. i spoke with many owners of these types of trucks and all have the same problem may cause a serious accident when someone looses steering going 55 mph i think we should make this problem known before somebody gets in an accident and gets someone killed. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 dodge durango. the contact stated that the vehicle had stopping issues. while driving 70 mph, the vehicle stopped without warning. there was a loss of all electrical components, power steering, and abs. she had to pour cold water on the computer in order for the vehicle to restart and was almost struck by a semi-truck in the process. the contact was concerned for her safety and her life. the manufacturer would not assume any liability for the failures. a dodge specialist stated that this was a frequent issue. the current and failure mileages were less than 170,000.

I purchased a 1999 dodge durango from a private dealer last year. not long after the purchase, while driving the vehicle down the road at about 50 mph, the engine shut off...barely any brakes, unable to steer. this happened several times after that, eventually leading to me not driving it anymore. while researching what was wrong with the vehicle, i came across many other people with the same problem, same make, year and model vehicle. many were reporting their close calls with mva's due to the engine just shutting off and them losing control of the vehicle. this is obviously a wide spread and dangerous problem, that thus far, dodge has failed to recall. i, as well as many others, do not have the money to put in to the vehicle for computer changes and uncertain mechanical work to get our vehicles in safe operating condition. i believe it's time that dodge do a recall and fix this dangerous problem. *tr

I was approaching a red light and when i used the brakes my vehicle went over into the right lane, without warning. it didn't swerve or pull, it went!!! there was a vehicle in the right lane and if the driver had not paid attention, i would have hit that vehicle. i had to quickly turn the wheel to the left to regain control of vehicle and consequently ended up running the red light. luckily, i was not killed at that intersection and the driver in the right lane was not hurt, trying to swerve and get out of my way. *tr

Without any warning, and on 3 separate occasions my 1999 dodge 4x4, durango completely shutdown while driving. after the first incident, w/the abs and engine light on the vehicle was taken to a dodge dealer for service. it was found that a speed sensor needed replacing, this was done. approximately 4 days later while driving on new york ave. in washington dc, the durango again completely shut down, on this occasion and subsequent ones, no warning lights were shown, no evidence was given that vehicle was about to shut down. on the last occasion sept 17, 2003 it again shutdown while driving approximately 45 mph on leesburg pike in falls church va. unlike the other 2 occasions this time it would not restart, although the engine attempted to turnover. it had to be towed, where it is currently undergoing another diagnosic, currently i am awaiting a call from the service technician. additionally the car has 87,256 miles and 3 years old, the back windows are not working due to a failed power housing unit for the windows. the approximate cost is $500 for repairs.

I bought my dod durango in 99 with 18,000 miles from poway dodge (san diego, ca). i took it to the dealer in third month after buying it as it was almost about to roll over when turning in a turn. the dealer said this was okay, not to worry. so i kept on driving then it started annoying clicking noise that had been getting worse for over a year but the dodge in carlsbad had not been able to diagnose it. when i brought it in most recently, they were emphatic that it was my ball joint and that my life had been on the line for months! but no one ever noticed every time i brought it in for diagnosis. the dealer i use to go now sold the dealership in poway and thats why now no one wants to be responsible for it. the clicking noise still continues and is getting worse. it is in the rear of the truck and is described like a gear slipping upon dead stop and start not to mention even slow drive now. they told me they hear clear as a bell but cant diagnose w/o literally taking the entire rear of the truck apart and always tell me that it is safe to drive. i drive it with my kids in it. i would like to file a complaint against chrysler and against my dealer poway dodge for negligence.*ak

Poor steering, does not trail or drive without constant correction. replaced new tires and new alignment. also found vehicle was out of alignment when purchased from the factory and that it was not uncommon. this is a very hard vehicle to drive. *ak very poor quality steering. we have mostly purchased ford in the past and have an old 91 f150 that drives like a dream. we have been very disappointed in this suv. the suv is a 4x4 slt. everything else i have been very happy with. but when you work this hard to drive especially freeway miles or open road, it's too much. we didn't understand it at first, and then thought it was poor tires, and then alignment, finally we replaced everything and it is still poor. *ak

I own a 1999 dodge durango. i have had alot of trouble with it. at first when i would call or take it by the dealership, they would tell me that nothing was wrong. the first problem was with the steering wheel making a rattling noise between 20-30 mph. they first told me nothing was wrong it was tire noise. then i brought it back a week later and they replaced the catalytic converter. when it was still doing it a week later, i took it to another dealer and the steering column was found to be bent and replaced. not long after that i had trouble with the engine, when i would stop, the engine would idle down and almost stall. i stopped at a gas station and found i had no oil. i put in two quarts and called the dealer. they found the plenum gasket had a leak. i had that replaced for over $450. shortly after that i was traveling home on the highway and it hesitated and the check engine light came on. i took it into the dealer and they ran a diagnostics test and couldn't find anything wrong. i notice that the rpm's had started revving up and down while you were driving right after this happen. i called and questioned about it and they said to change the oil. it still did it after an oil change. while on our way home to ny, we had stopped and it stalled in the middle of the road and the check engine light came on again. when we got home i took it in and had another test done on it. they replaced the output speed sensor and said that was going to fix it. it still did the rpm thing after that, and they told me that i would have to pay for another diagnostics test. i have since, gotten a tune up and oil change, and it still does it. the check engine light keeps coming on and going off. i am sorry that this is so long, but i feel like i have tried everything and no one will help. my questions are, have you heard of anything like these problems before, are there any related recalls, and is there anything you can do to help get this resolved? i would appreciate any help! *nlm

While driving less than 600 from my house in my 1999 green dodge durango 4 door the power steering went out causing an accident with a parked car. i had the car had to be towed to the dodge dealership in warren michigan i was told that the power steering seal blew causing the loss of power assist steering. the loss of this type of failure as you know makes driving harder that a car without power steering at all. i ask the dealership to have dcc look into the cause of this failure which cause the accident without any prior leaks or loss of fluid. the investigation letter stated that a vehicle that was built june 23, 1999 and had 66,006 miles would have these kinds of failures. the vehicle was inspected less than 3000 miles prior when it was taken in for air conditioning core issues. the dealership did an inspection and found other leaks but did not find issue with the power steering pump. i have looked all around the vehicle and operator's manual which does not have this information that steering can be hampered when the vehicle is older than 50k miles. the cost of the work to get he suspension , ball joints, tie rods , control arms, you name it will be just less than $5,000 dollars. does dcc know people could be injured or killed by these kind of problems. i hope this will not go on unfound ears. keep up the good work!!!!! stacy scicluna, warren michigan 586-757-7947 . *nm

STEERING - LINKAGES

The subject vehicle purchased used when approximately one (1) year old, a 1999 dodge durango, 4-wheel drive 5.2l engine, has a failed power steering gear box. the symptom of failure is best characterized as an over boost. when the vehicle is parked on ice, or is jacked, engine running and the steering is turned with moderate force 2 to three inches in circumferential rotation the steering wheel will continue to turn for up to three quarters of a revolution without further input. the defect is more pronounced to the left, than the right. shortly before vehicle reached the end of warranty mileage (36k miles) vehicle was taken for service to a local dodge dealership (penske chrysler jeep dodge 4505 west 96th street, indianapolis, in 46268 phone: 317-872-6200). among the requested work items was the slight resistance (or pop) just right of center when turning to the left. in late 2003, after the reports of ball joint failures on dodge durango's i elected to closely inspect the ball joints and found some wear. the wear was not to the dodge durango manual limit, but i was uncomfortable with the wear, and the wear pattern evident on the front tires. all four (4) ball joints replaced with moog parts just prior to christmas 2003. when the vehicle was taken to the local firestone for alignment (firestone tire & service centers 8583 michigan rd, indianapolis, in 46268 317-876-3983) i was advised the steering gear was suspect of being failed due to the slow roll condition noted above. dodge dealership qureied as too part availability. my wife was told the steering gear was on back order. that the replacement part would be a new part number, and that there would be a minimum two (2) week wait. the nhtsa is encouraged to investigate steering gear box failures on dodge durango / dakota vehicles and correlate all steering related reports to ensure a systemic design or quality control defect is not evident on these vehicles.*ak

I was on my way to work one morning and was just down the road from my home when all of a sudden, my steering wheel just started spinning around in my hands, a bolt about 3-4 inches had worked it's way out of the linkage. i applied my brakes, but the truck was coming down a hill and i ended up at the bottom of a 20 foot culvert. luckily the vehicle didn't roll, or i probably wouldn't be here today. we had work done on it 6 months after we leased it (dec, 1999) and were told they had to remove the steering column to fix the heater--after the accident, they had no recollection of doing any such work and even tried to tell me that we had not leased the vehicle from them, they never had that vin# in their system. my insurance company investigated it and told me that over time, the vibration made the bolt fall out of the vehicle.

Grinding noises and uncontrollable pulls to the right made the vehicle hard to control, especially when travelling on the highway - this causes an extreme safety problem. brought the durango to auto mechanic, he told us the left front tie rod needed replacement. replaced tie rod end and found out left front wheel bearing is gone and is subject to seizure at any time. if this is not a safety hazard, i don't know what is because this front end suspension problem has the propensity to cause the vehicle to rollover when travelling on the highway or to tip on its side when driving upon back, city or suburban streets.

Current problem: ball joints and tie rods need to be replaced, although i complained several times about feeling there was a problem with the arms or something in that area, nothing was ever looked at because they could not produce same bump i felt, so they repeatedly told me there was no problem. when i took my durango for new tires on may 1, 2001; the tire place robertson tire in tulsa, said the ball joints all needed to be replaced and the left front brake was toast. since i did not put my concerns of the arms or ball joints in writing i have no proof that i had mentioned it to them the several times before when they performed other work on my vehicle. also, we had numerous problems with the abs brakes. we had to take it to the dealer 5 times before the problem was corrected, also i was told my brakes were fine on febrary 23, 2001 only to find out on may 2 they were not fine. the engine is using oil, which the dealer said is a gasket problem. the 4 wheel drive stays in 4 wheel drive even after taking it out. the left front window power window had to be replace early on because it was defective. transmission seems to start in 2 at times but then goes away. east tulsa dodge has fixed most of our past problems because it was still under factory warrenty. the ball joints and tyrods are not even under our extended warrenty we purchased. after reading your customer complaints, i am very concerned with the drive shaft problem, the air bag and seat belt problems and engine stalling problem. *ak

I was proceeding on a straight road on a bright, sunny day at about 45mph. i went to turn the steering wheel slightly and noticed that the tires did not respond. i turned the wheel again and there was no response. i immediately hit the brakes and the vehicle pulled to the right hand side of the road, stopping in the gravel on the shoulder. i called the chrysler 800 service number and explained the situation to a representative. a wrecker arrived 30 minutes later and the driver turned white as a ghost when he spun the steering wheel in circles without any response. he indicated he was thinking about buying a durango but not anymore. evidently a 3-4 inch bolt had come loose from the steering column somewhere under the dashboard and this is the only thing linking the steering wheel to the front wheels. if this is the case, this represents a fatal design flaw in the durango, and there should be an immediate recall. my son and i are very fortunate to be alive. having worked for ford for 10 years, i'm sure chrysler is aware of this defect, but has estimated they will pay out less in wrongful death suits than the cost of a recall. i am outraged that a vehicle with this type of design flaw could be manufactured.

I have a 1999 dodge durango with 54,000 miles that is already needing new front ball joints. the vehicle has started shaking at various speeds. this problem was diagnosed by a garage mechanic who is not connected to dodge. after checking with the local dodge service manager, who checked the ball joints, i was told the ball joints were within specification and that a new idler arm was needed. i have since replace all 4 tires and shocks but the problem still persists. i'm concerned that i am driving a safety hazard. *ak

There was a noise coming from the front end of the vehicle at various speeds and tire wear was abnormal. i took the vehicle to an independent repair shop. upon initial inspection, the upper and lower control arm ball joints were loose and needed to be replaced on both sides. the inner tie rods also had to be changed due to the loose ball joints. the total cost of repairs, even with my military discount was $950. the vehicle had only 65298 miles on the odometer when it was taken to the shop. luckily i noticed the problem before the ball joints separated and caused an accident. this problem put my life and my family's life in harms way. 1999 durangos should have been a part of the recall on ball joints. there is a nhtsa recall campaign id # 04v596000 regarding the upper ball joints. the vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall. however it is not included in the recall due to the vin. 1b4hs28z8xf577617. *nm

1999 dodge durango, same problem as the 2000 up. the recall was done on those but dodge has not been forced to recall the 1999's. we purchased our vehicle in august 1999, it never did drive good, wandering, we thought it might be the tires, and continued to drive until unable to go anywhere in safety. took the vehicle to larry miller 12/22/2003 they recommended replacing both inner tie rods, idler arms, alignment etc. cost of $796.00 this was approx 55,000 miles. since they would not warrant the car, we took it to a private shop russ' alignment in salt lake. and paid $779.00 2/4/2004. we replaced all 4 tires. we had this vehicle into alignment shops constantly, tire repair, balancing etc the tires were so badly worn in directions that should never have been on a vehicle. these things should have been done 30,000 miles sooner. i contacted chrysler and submitted the receipts the file # 13542683, phone # 1-800-992-1997 option #5. i spoke with brandy brandy instructed the durango was out of warranty and they had no requirement to compensation. when asked to put that in a written statement they refused and said it was in my file and they did not have to submit that information nor could i speak with a superviser. but that i would receive my original bills back in 7-10 days. this is a recent claim and have not received my original receipts yet. 5/18/2005

Purchased my 1999 dodge durango in july 1999. this vehicle has always been serviced at the local dodge dealership in little rock at the service intervals that chrysler recommends in their service manual. i started having problems with my durango at 51,492 miles with the check engine light coming on. i immediately took it in for service. the service dept. told me that the vehicle's computer said i had a blown head gasket along with #7 injector being bad. so a new platinum gasket, #7 injector and injector service was done at a cost to me of $814.72. at 52,085 miles the check engine light came on again. again into the dodge service dept. only to find out that now the engine computer is bad (pcm213) and will be replaced under dodge's 80,000 mile warranty. my thinking at this point was that if the computer was giving out false information at 51,492 miles then perhaps my $814.72 bill for a new platinum gasket wasn't justified. of course, the service dept. assured me that these repairs were indeed necessary at the time. at 53,628 miles i grew concerned about upper/lower ball joints being bad on my durango after watching a cbs news report. as i was planning a cross country trip for the holidays, i had the service dept. evaluate the balls joints before i left, and sure enough, my durango needed upper and lower ball joints and a right tie rod. because this problem can be so dangerous i was instructed not to drive the vehicle and had to take alternate transportation on my trip. new parts were ordered and the dodge service dept. replaced the upper and lower ball joints on both sides and a right tie rod arm at a cost to me of $952.10 plus a $57.82 diagnostic test to tell us these parts were bad in the first place. i feel that my vehicle is unreliable and not one that i can depend on in the future. these are safety defects that chrysler should have fixed at no cost to me. i cannot afford to repair this vehicle anymore. *la

Several months ago, i took my 1999 dodge durango in for a check engine light malfunction. the dealer informed me that the speed sensor was bad, and would need to be replaced. additionally, they also informed me that the inner tie rod ends were worn and would also need replacement. i was extremely shocked to hear this. at less than 38000 miles, this suv should not be experiencing problems with such a major suspension component. i asked the technician to show me what he was talking about and he proceeded to show me the amount of play in my front suspension due to this faulty component. when i inquired as to why there was no grease fitting on much of the front end, he replied thats the way dodge designs em and left it at that. i opted to perform the work myself so as to save the outrageous labor charges here in california, and also to ensure that a higher quality part was installed that included grease fittings. shortly after i completed the repairs, i began searching the internet for similar experiences from other durango owners. also to my surprise, i found a sustantial number of complaints about the front suspension on this suv, and also for models of other years. any auto manufacturer who installs non greasable suspension components on an suv designed to go offroad is simply engaging in cost cutting measures at the expense of their customers lives. i believe that my wife, family and i were lucky that this issue was identified early and there were no accidents or fatalities. it could have been much more serious. additionally, i am curious as to why a technician would even inspect the front end on a vehicle that was brought in for a simple electrical problem. unless the technician expected the damage and noting the milage on the truck, simply inspected the components on his own, i find it hard to believe that this would occur otherwise.*ak

I own a 1999 durango and was told that my upper and lower ball joints ( left & right ) along with the tie rod ends were worn out after i took it to the dealer because of tire wear and was told it would cost $1,400 to repair. this suv only had 65,000 miles on it and was never taken off-road. i am now aware that this problem is not limited to a few owners. i have been telling every durango owner i see about this safety issue ( many already have had the ball joints replaced ) and encourage them to complain to the nhtsa about this problem. *ak

I read about this in the newspaper, called dodge, and found out teh ntsb was looking into the problem.i purchased a 1999 dodge durango in february of 2000, and it had 45,109 miles on it. before i took possession they had to replace the ball joints (not sure if it was upper/lower or both). then in december of 2001 i was told they were bad, and it wasn't under warranty. they (forest lake dodge) replaced upper & lower ball joints on both sides, both tie rod ends, and aligned it. the total cost to me was $1,772.63. *ak i now have a problem with the stabilizer bar which has come apart on the drivers side; this fitting is like a ball joint. also, i think the front end is gettig bad again.
