Vehicle shuts down without warning also losing power steering, brakes etc. may or may not start after 15 minutes or so. have had grandkids with me on 2 separate occasions, one being sitting in 90 degree heat for over an hour and vehicle wouldnt start, waiting on tow. another time vehicle shut down and had to jump lanes and coast to get to side road to stop. very, very dangerous situations many times! havent drove it since. sitting in driveway around 3 months. abs has also gone out.

We experienced within 1 week of purchase (march 2011) the frequent stalling out, along with total loss of power brakes and power steering that has been reported by hundreds of 1999 owners. the problem occurs in primarily hot summer weather, but has also occured in spring and fall weather with any temps over 70 degrees, although less frequently.the actions required are to raise the hood, wait for the unit to cool (or cool it artificially with cold water or ice pack) until the vehicle will restart. over a year period of experimenting, i have lessened but not cured the problem. all the solutions are related to increasing the airflow to the cpu/pcm area, which chronically overheats due to its location. if dodge would recall the 1999 model, i can imagine either of two solutions at minimal cost. (photos of my solutions are available.) if the air guard to the passenger side of the radiator has the top half removed, then it is simple to install an intake tube or shaft to direct air thru the grille to the pcm. a plastic, easy installable unit would be the lowest cost solution. failing this, the relocation of the pcm with a mounting bracket kit and a harness extension would allow placement of the unit in a cooler location (like right behind the new grille opening). my wife loses all braking and steering power assist when the engine stalls, sometimes when turning across oncoming traffic. this is a severe safety issue. it has occured at least twice a week in hot weather for a year now, and on may 28th, 2012, it occurred 6 times within 40 miles during a 120 mile trip.

I was driving on the highway at about 55 miles per hour when all of a sudden my vehicle just shut down. no steering or brakes. after waiting about 15 minutes it fires right back up. this has happened numerous times since then when temperatures outside get above 78 degrees. today it stalled as i was waiting to turn left at a very busy intersection and had to be pushed while cars are still trying to pass and go around me. i had my sister and our 5 kids in the car. this is very dangerous and i have read on different websites numerous complaints of this same thing happening. somebody could be seriously injured when you lose brakes and steering at high rates of speed.

I was driving down the road, and the vehicle just shutdown. i check my gauges, and noticed that a no bus code was showing, and that the fuel tank indicated there was no fuel. another driver behind me assisted me in pushing the vehicle out of the road, because the vehicle would not restart. after sitting there for 20 -30 minutes, trying to restart the vehicle, it finally started. the fuel gauge showed almost a full tank of fuel and everything seemed to be fine. before i could make it home, it shutdown on me again. this is an ongoing problem, my vehicle has shutdown on me six more times, and now it is parked in my driveway. i have been very lucky, and i am not going to push my luck by driving this vehicle. i have heard about problems with the new front suspension on this model durango, and yes, i replaced the ball joints on my vehicle which would give me a couple more years before having to replace them again. is toyota the only auto maker stepping up being responsible for their product? comon man !!!!!!

I own a 1999 dodge durango it started stalling out and stopped running at random times. my wife almost got rearended aat a traffic light. it stalled out on me on railroad tracks. if i get out and wiggle the wires to the ecm/pcm it starts back up. when it stalls out or dies no bus reads on the odometer.

I own a 99 dodge durango, 5.9 liter, the events to the failure were stalling while driving on freeway, at stop, in intersections, without warning. when attempting to restart, dash cluster would not function, read no bus on odometer, and show i had no fuel on gas guage. also when it would stall i would lose brakes and power steering, making it hard to get out of the way of traffic or move to the side of the road. the first time it happened i had my wife and 2 infants with me on the freeway doing 65 in the middle lane. not only unexpected, extremely dangerous. since then i will not allow my family in this car. things that were done to correct the issue were fuel pump, cap and rotor, plugs, wires, crank sensor, and pcm. i have reciepts for all work and parts. old pcm not available due to core.

My 1999 dodge durango turns off anytime the tempature gets above 85f. this happens in stop and go traffic and even driving at 70 mph. when this happens you loose all control of the car. i have replaced the pcm but it still keeps happening. one day someone will rear end me and my children.

99 dodge durange v8. this vehicle is a piece of crap. the car stalls without warning whenever it wants without warning. this is very dangerous for my family to ride in anywhere especially on the freeway. dodge needs to do a recall on this vehicle as it is hard to tell how many fatalities have occured from this reason. sometimes the car will run for 25-30 minutes before it shuts off and seems the car has to cool before it will start again. the code shows no bu5 but it will not run a code.

My 99 durango while driving just looses all power and shuts down i have replaced the battery, air idle processor. the stepper motor and a new alternator. my vehicle still will not stay running, i have children and need to get then to and from school, i feel very unsafe because i do not know when this is going to shut down. i have read alot of other complaints with the same problem with the same year vehicle on auto beef.com. this is obviously a manufacturer defect and dodge needs to take responsibility before this ends up in very serious accidents possible death. *tr
