I bought the s.u.v march 14,2011 and 2 weeks later it stalled on the freeway after getting out of college about 4:25pm. heavy traffic, i taught i was going to get rear ended. its happen 5 x since twice on free way on 3 x in town.. i was never going over 35 mph when it accours..it just shuts off with no warning of anything. taylor dealers, which i bought the car from took it to there shop and they could not find anything no codes or any signs of problems with truck they had the truck about a month.. after the 3x it stalled i took it straight to san diego to the mechanic of taylor motors and they ran the codes again and nothing shows and they said nothing they can do because they need to see the problem or the stalling need to happen while they drive and it never happens. so on or about may 11, 2011 i called dodge corparate office and explained the situation and i explained its a serious safety issues they have a case management judy on it but no word since i explained and they can't get the truck to stall..they intructed me to take the truck to there dealership.. they can't find out the issue either, my trucks is still at the dealers while they try to figure out the problem but as of today they still can't figure out what could be the problem.. it seems that it happens on hot days or driving around a lot.. i explained that it happens periodickly... its really scary because it just shuts of with no warning or anything until u relize that ur pressing gas pedal and its not going. i seen online about this truck having problems in other states as well and no one has done nothing.. i hope there not waiting for a serious drastic accident to accour in order to recall the truck or fix the issue.. no car should just turn off without warning..i read some person had same issue and it was the coil to close to exhaust manifold. it causes coil to get to hot and shut truck off

I had a 2000 dodge durango and after driving for about 15 minutes i turned on the air and a sulfar like smell came through the air system. after pulling over and cutting the car off, flames came from under the hood. the car burst into flames and burned completely up. nothing was left but the metal frame. my insurance company couldn't give me any insight as to why this happened. i had about 133,000 miles on it. i wish i knew about this site before i lost my vehicle. i would've insisted that the dealership thoroughly check the car out before i ended up without a vehicle for 2 months.

I've held confidence in my 2000 dodge durango since i purchased it in 2003. in the summer of 2009, i was driving down a local road when suddenly the gauges on the dash board were not registering, the odometer read bus and the engine completely shut down in the middle of traffic. since this occurred without warning, i did not have time to pull over to the side of the road. i turned on the caution blinkers. there were many cars blowing their horns, waiting behind me on this one lane road. after a couple of minutes the engine started and i was able to drive. i thought this was a one time only occurrence. i had no prior problems with the truck. a few days later, i was driving on the interstate during rush hour traffic and the truck suddenly shut off again. omg, i was nervous, scared and really believed that i was going to die because someone would ram their vehicle into mine. what driver would suspect that my truck suddenly died while i was driving it? i thought about how i was going to get this vehicle safely to the side of the road without endangering my life and the life of other drivers. luckily i did it. my husband tinkered with the computer and noticed that when he reposition the computer the engine would start again. but i refuse to drive it until we purchase another computer. the car repairman said, even if we purchased another computer he could not guarantee that the vehicle would not shut completely down. the computer is overheating due to the location that the manufacturers have chosen. i will get someone to design some sort of heat shield or something to prevent the computer from overheating. to replace my current computer will cost $1100. i think the car company should take responsibility for this flaw and recall the vehicle. i do not want someone to get killed due to their gross negligence. i am not the only dodge durango owner who is having this same problem. please investigate this issue and get something done. preventing just one death is enough. *tr

I am the original owner of my 2000 durango slt 4x4, since the time of purchase in 2000. i had my vehicle in the shop for the rear roof a/c fan motor going on and off every time i am in the car while the a/c switch is off. i have all records and can contact the dealer for proof that this issue was reported, inspected and worked on numerous times and never resolved. 9 years later, and the problem still persists and has left me quite unhappy especially when this vehicle was my first purchase on my own and i'm reminded of the issue everytime i'm driving the car. i have no other complaints except for this a/c roof unit fan motor going on and off on its own for unknown reason. sometimes, it might stop if i play with the temperature and fan controllers on the front dash, but has not been specific. i have even spoken to the dealer manager where i purchased the vehicle within days and weeks and continued to months after numerous unresolved repair attempts to claim under the lemon law and the dealership guided me otherwise. even though its been 9 years, i still own the vehicle and really do wish to resolve this issue as i plan to continue to drive this vehicle for as long as possible as i do keep it routinely maintained and serviced. an additional inquiry or complaint is the awful oil sludge build up near and around the oil cap and reservoir intake where the oil is added. i was also informed by my mechanic that the headers were cleaned from sludge build up. i looked this issue up online at the dodge forums and this seems to be a very common problem. at this time, i have not had any other issues in regard to the sludge build up but my main concern is the rear fan since i cannot find any related information to repair this problem. please take the time into this rear a/c matter, and recommendations for the sludge prevention or maintenance, it would be greatly. *tr

V8-287 4.7l durango stalls without warning. doesn't matter if i am on the freeway or in city traffic. nothing specific that i can relate to the cause. immediately lose power steering. electrical seems to continue working. car will start back up fine after 5 to 15 minutes of sitting. happens in hot and cold weather, day or night. can go for weeks without stalling and then stall several times in a few days. yellow check engine light comes on, which the manual tells me is not an immediate issue. extremely unsafe and i fear for my family's safety. looked at dodge durango maintenance and repair forum on internet and found pages and pages of similar complaints. (http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com and http://www.topix.com/forum/autos/dodge-durango) through these websites it doesn't look like anyone can figure it out, including the dealerships, although the problem seems to be widespread. *tr

While driving, the oil pressure dropped to zero and the truck shut-off, never to be started again. when i had it towed to a mechanic, they told me i had a common problem with these vehicles. that being, engine oil sludge. i had changed the oil as my manual requested and still ended up with this problem. i am now having to purchase a new engine if i wish to drive it again. i owe almost less than it would cost to buy the engine. *tr

Dt*: the contact stated while at a stop with the engine idling, the engine began knocking and the needle of the oil pressure gauge dropped to zero. this was the third incident. the two previous occurrences were while driving at 45 mph. the steering tightened as the knocking began and the oil pressure dropped. on each occasion the vehicle was taken to an independent service mechanic. the manifold, oil pan and valve cover gaskets were replaced once and sludge build up was cleaned out twice. the service dealer and manufacturer were alerted.

Dt: the oil pressure failed while driving on the freeway. the consumer had taken the vehicle to the dealer and had the oil pump replaced three times. both heads have been replaced. the sludge has been cleaned out, and the engine still had no oil pressure. no leaks have been noticed. the vehicle can be driven for about 3 miles, and then the oil pressure will drop. *jb

2000 dodge durango, has sludge build up in engine. i have changed oil regularly ( 3000-5000) miles. i have had the oil pump replaced and now am having problems with oil pressure light. i have done research and have found that many owners of the durango's have had engine problems. one web site, www.consumeraffairs.com, has many of these complaints listed. i would like for dodge to take care of the problems. *jb

Whjile parked antifreeze spot started showing up under the dodge durango 2000. repair shop found 8 freeze plugs leaking on a vehicle with only 61,250 miles on it.
09/02/200460100107/28/2000
My 2000 durango, with 60,100 miles on it, had a scent of anti-freeze, so i took it in to the dealer. i was informed that the freeze plugs on one side of the engine were leaking. the parts were removed/replaced, and the old parts had corroded through. i was told i had better change the balance, because they could go at any time. when i asked how it was possible that these items could fail in such a (relatively) short period of time, the answer was sometimes that happens. i have worked on vehicles, and rebuilt engines, for over 20 years and this is the first time i have seen an engine with so few miles have this problem. i have 2 of the 3 removed parts (i was told the third crumbled when removed), and plan on pursuing dodge for a better explanation. *jb

I was drving on the highway with my wife, 2 children, a friend of the family, and my family dog, when the oil gauge needle dropped to zero, and the warning sound began to go off. according to the gages, i was loosing oil pressure. after a second, the gauges would return to normal. it was intermitent. after 2 minutes of this, i decided to pull of the road and check the oil level, it was full... i turned the car back on, the warning signal was gone, and the needle indicated that i had oil pressure. i went another 4 miles down the highway when i entered a single lane construction zone. this time the needle went to zero, indicating no oil pressure. i had no choice but to turn on my hazard lights, and drive 2 more miles @35mph to the next exit. once on the ramp, the car made a ticking noise, and eventually stalled. due to the lose of power stearing, it was difficult to stear. it was even more difficult to stop the car (lose of braking) my dodge durango had to be towed away. now i am told that it will cost me in excess of $4,000 to fix it. i was told by several mechanics that dodge had to design this engine with extremely tigh tolerances in order to meet the hp requirements. in doing so, it souonds like they neglected to perform the proper analysis required to determing the affect on proper oil circualtion. i changed my oil every 3-4,000 mi. how could this happen? after searching the internet, i found out that this was a common occurance amongst durango owners. i read one complaint after another. i some cases, chrysler would not cover the failure even if the owner had an extended warranty. my dealership won't recognize that their is a historical problem. they lost my business. even though my car is out of warranty, one would expect it to last 90,000 mi. without a catastrophic failure of this magnitude. this poblem should be recognized by chrysler....these motors should be recalled....sounds like a class action suite is in order. *ak

2000 dodge durang: i was driving on the highway with my wife, 2 children, a friend of one of my chilren, and my family dog, when the oil gauge needle started to bounce back and forth. it indicated that i was loosing presure and then return to normal. after 2 minutes of this, i pulled off the road and checked the oil level. it was full....... i turned the car back on, and the problem went away. i went further down the highway and entered a single lane construction zone when it started to do the same thing. this time it finally went to zero. having no where to go for 2 more miles, i had no choice but to drive to the next exit. i put on my hazrd lights, and drove 35mph while coasting as often as i could. once i got off the exit, the car starting to make a ticking sound (lifters) and eventually stoped running. my dodge durango had only 44,000 mi. on it. the oil was changed every 3-4,000 mi. the car had to be towed away. now i am told i need a completely rebuilt engine. it will cost me $4,000+ to repair it. after searching the internet, i found this problem to be to common. i cannot get my dealership to acknowledge such an occurance. even though my car is out of warranty, i feel that it should last more than 90,000 mi with the proper amount of scheduled maintenance. sounds like a major recall is in order. who knows, maybe even a clase action law suite will come out of it if enough people complain.*ak

On 8/7/02 my oil pressure suddenly dropped to 0. a dodge mechanic replaced the oil pump, which was under warranty since the vehicle had only 28,000 miles on it. on 8/19/03 my oil pressure again suddenly dropped to 0. my car was towed to a dodge dealership where an asst. service mgr. told me i would likely need a new engine. he said that although he had only seen this problem "one other time" my extended warranty might not cover it because it was caused by poor maintenance. i told him that i averaged only 10k miles a year on my car and had most, if not all, of my oil change records. his demeanor tells me that this won't be covered without a fight. my durango has 40,600 miles on it. through the internet i have learned that there are literally hundreds of people who've been stuck with thousands of dollars of unjustified charges because of dodge's failure to admit that the engines of some durangos develop sludge (apparently it's known as a smog sludge motor in trade terms.) when you check the following websites you'll immediately see the pattern: consumeraffairs.com, nhtsa.gov, carsurvey.org, or simply google "oil pressure durango" or "durango sludge"

Our 2000 durango with only 57k miles, had the check guages light come on. the engine temp went to hot, then to cold. after taking it into the dealer, i was told that the water heater needed to be replaced ($300), the soft plugs (freeze plugs?) were bad and needed to be be replaced ($1500) and there is an internal oil leak ($1,000). this is a 2000 model year, purchased in january of 2000 and only has 57,000 miles

2000 dodge durango. at about 69,000 miles the vehicle heater suddenly went cold and the vehicle overheated. i pulled over and checked under the hood. the vehicle lost all antifreeze. towed it home. the next day found that a freeze plug had a hole in it. after repair, found that the freeze plug had corrosion and actually rusted through. dealer said it was due to lack of maintenence. impossible, freeze plugs are not maintained and coollant has a life of 100,000 miles. in addition, a freeze plug should be galvanized/aluminized to prevent corrosion. vehicle has been repaired. however, because of this problem, i wonder if this is the reason that others are having vehicles blow up. i believe that the sludge is the result of the overheated oil and that is why the vehicles are blowing up. not because of lack of oil changes. after this problem, i have found that my engine idles slightly rough. this seems like a good indicator of blown seals causing oil leakage and of overly heated oil creating sludge.*ak

November 1, 2002 our 2000 dodge durango malfunctioned. it was towed into a dealership where an adjuster from our extended warranty company (north american) was sent. according to the mechanic at the dealership, an upper plenum gasket malfunctioned, causing oil to suck up into a part of the engine and burn up. we were told that the burned oil then dropped into the oil pan where it was then sucked up into the intake and became clogged. north american denied our claim stating negligence on our part. a representative with north american stated to me that they did not agree with the adjuster. we had to borrow over $4,000 to replace the engine in this vehicle. i have since found other people in the united states who are posting this same issue with dodge durango's (and not just the year 2000) consumer was asking how come there's no official investigation has opened regarding vehicle. consumer has found 20 plus similar complaints. *la

I have owned my 2000 durango since it was new, i have changed the oil regularly for the whole time, i have always done it myself. i recently brought the vehicle in for the ticking noise that i've been told since the vehicle was new, there is no concern when i changed the oil, it was always clean, no problems. well, it seems the engine oil had not been traveling through the motor and apparently damaged internal parts to the tune of $2700.00, when i looked it up online, i learned this has happened to nearly every 4.7 v8 that chrysler makes, my computer lit up with the exact same problems, everywhere. why is it that chrysler is not responsible for a motor defect that the consumer has no control over? all maintainance had been done on this one, and has been taken care of meticulously. i called chrysler for assistance, but the response was that of deny, deny, deny and refer the customer to the original warranty, the end! i believe chrysler should step up and be responsible for their incompetence! i for one would like my hard earned money back for this job, which took me 6 months to pay off to get my car back.

My 2000 durango slt was being driven by my son when the check gauges light came on. it was towed to a garage since they told us not to drive it. they proceeded to change the oil first, since the oil pressure gauge was jumping up and down. they then started the durango and revved the engine for a while. we then had it towed to our house since my husband is a mechanic. he was going to look at it and when he did he discovered that one of the rods were bent so this means the engine needs replaced. oil changes on my durango were done as scheduled by my husband, in fact he had checked the oil 2 days prior to the incident and went and bought a new oil filter and a new case of oil to change the oil. my son called dahmler-chrysler and they told him that there had never been any complaints made to them about the engine and that there was no recalls done on the vehicle. these checks were even done with us giving them the vin of the vehicle. we are now looking at having to spend $2000 for an engine and that is one with 60,000 miles on it and being rebuilt. seeing the other complaints on the websites that i have been to, dodge has to be at fault for a defect on the engine or oil pump which would cause the oil to gum up just sitting there and not being pumped through the engine to keep crucial parts lubricated to function properly. to be honest it makes me worried about going out and paying the money for another engine seeing that maybe next month it would end up tearing up again. i feel that dodge should do something about the problems with this engine in this particular vehicle before someone gets killed due to engine failure and the family of that person finds this information and dahmler-chrysler is involved in a class action lawsuit and that could be even more devistating the company than a recall on the engines that don't work correctly to begin with.*ak

Complete engine failure due to sludge. 41k miles. schedule a oil changes as per owners manual. the dealship performed the majority of the oil changes for which there were records (the last was just 2000 mi prior to failure) there were a few that were performed by me for which i couldn't produce the receipts of the oil and filter purchase. hence, no satisfaction was provided by either the dealership or chrysler. after researching the incident further, i have found that there are at least a couple hundred others with similar stories. obviously these engines run excessively hot under normal circumstances, thus producing sludge that builds up over time (collecting in the oil pan and obstructing the pickup filter in my case) that is not removed by routine oil changes. this smacks of design flaws to me.

My 2000 durango has started stalling while driving. steering locks up and is hard to pull over to the side of the road. has done this at multiple speeds and conditions of driving. mostly happened in stop and go traffic. no prior warning to it stalling or losing all power. once the vehicle is shut off it is hard to re-start again, at this time the battery, oil pressure, gas and temp gauges wont operate. i have had to wait up wards of an hour before the gauges will move and the car will restart. the gauge or dash lights never indicate a problem, not until the car dies will the check engine light sometimes come on. i have taken the car in and after 2 tries to fix it and $500 they said it was the computer. now after 3 weeks of waiting and more money spent, they say the computer was rebuilt? and it still would die and wouldn't restart. then they put in a new computer, i drove home, then never made it out of the driveway. does anyone know what might be my cars problem, being a single mom with 3 kids i now fear for their safety and the costs i am spending on this car. *nm

Engine failure oil problem orignal problem was fuel pump deal claims engine making noise and is also knocking. i have receipts from auto shop and over the counter for purchase of oil and oil filters nj dodge district mgr said it was not good enought this is a oil sludge issue we have kept up maintenance on the vehicle but chrysler will not cover the repairs under the warranty. other dodge owners also have same problem related to all dodge suv and dodge dakota trucks. i also feel that if dodge had change the oil they would replace the engine under the warranty. dt

While on vacation and traveling up to 350 miles from home, without notice the oil pressure light came on and we heard a loud noise under the hood. we began to lose pressure and immediately pulled over and mange to find the only gas station/convenience store for miles. we called a tow truck and the vehicle was towed to the the nearest dodge dealer ship which was approximently 35 miles away in morgantown, wv. after looking over the car the service manager along with his staff informed us that they could not understand the problem. they stated that they needed more time in order to try to figure out the exact problem because that had never seen anything like this before and because they were use to repairing caravans. we had to find a hotel room for the night for my wife and two children. the next afternoon we received a call notifying us that the right side of our engine was gone and that it would take $6,000 in order to fix our problem. we did decided to try to get a second opinion and contact demler chrysler prior to trying to pay for an engine replacement. when asked how could this happen, the dealer notified us that they did not know and that they had never seen this before accept in much older cars with hundreds of miles. we paid the bill for approximately $200 for them to tell us that our engine was gone, rented a car and made arrangements for aaa to tow our car back to maryland which again was over 350 miles away. the vehicle arrived at our home approximately a week later and we discovered that the dealership did not put our engine back together but placed all the removed parts in the truck of the car. we notified the manufacturer by e-mail of this problem. they notified us that they would research this problem. this was about a week ago. *ak

There was no warning, oil pressure light just came on and we lost pressure. then there was a knocking noise under the hood. we had it towed to herb gordon dodge, which said the engine was a total loss. i had to drive it homeand the engine light came on. i called fitzgerald to see if i was covered under warranty. they said bring it in, so i had it towed to the dealer. they said the warrranty wouldn't cover it because i could not produce 15 maintenance receipts. i had a full service engine flush at 32,727 miles. they did not care, but said they could give me a new engine at $6000 or a patchup at $4200. the service manager also offered to put me in contact with a company that will finance engines.*ak

Engine has had a miss in it since we purchased the car. we have took it back to the dealer 3 times complaining, with the first one was before it had 2000 miles on the car. the dealership told us the first time that it would/did not show up on the computer until it had over 2000 miles on the car. so drive it until then, and if it still did it bring it back in. we brought it back in at 3,803 miles,7,596 miles and then at 18,275. at 7,596 miles they reprogrammed the car and told us to use unleaded plus gas instead of regular. it did no good to change the grade of gas. then we brought it back in at 18,275 miles with 4 different problems and they changed the fan clutch. the car still missed after this. the dealership told us at this time that they had 3 other cars with the same problem and that chrysler does not know what the problem is and can not fix it. as far as the clock spring, they were going to replace it, but chrysler told them instead to change out the steering column instead.*ak
