I was traveling about 35 mile per hour on a sunny day, dry pavement, temperature was about 78 degrees. a car about 30 feet in front of me had stop to turn. i applied my brakes and they seem to grab and lock and my car would not stop. at that point i was approximately 20 or so feet from the car in front of me i hit the brakes again, felt the car surge forward and then the brakes totally totally locked up and i hit the car in front of me. during this time the brakes made a loud clucking noise and was squealing extremely loud. the police record shows 20 feet of skid marks. this was scariest experience i have had in my life knowing that my daughter was in the car with me and my brakes would not stop, eventhough i had plenty of time to stop. i have had my 2000 dodge durango for almost 3 1/2 years, during that time i have had the brakes and replaced and less than 3 months ago the drum and rotors replaced. i am definitely a maintenance kind of person when it comes to my truck. there have been about 3 occassions in the last 3 1/2 years when i felt like my brakes were about to give. the first two resulted in service work on my brakes. the final one as you can see resulted in an accident. i have contacted my insurance company notifying them that other 2000 dodge durango drivers have experienced the same problems. my car is currently in the shop and my insurance company is going to have a brake specialist examine my brake system. the dodge company really needs to look at what this issue with the brakes in the 2000 dodge durango since this definitely does not appear to be an isolated incident. i am know considering trading in my durango as soon as i can get the funds to put down on another vehicle.*ak

I have had my 2000 durango in to the dealership (when it was under warranty) for spongy, loose, pulsing braking, noise from the suspension, & a chirping/squeaking sound (alternator like) when it is cold outside. the suspension noise was corrected with new spacers in the leaf springs (which they admitted were a problem). i was told that the pulsing in the brake pedal was normal for the durango & not to worry about it. they did a balance & told me it took care of the problem. it didn't. they could not duplicate the chirping (after 2-3 visits) although it happens for me every day. now we are out of warranty after reading many of the complaints for the same problems here, i'm just waiting for something to happen. will my children be injured as a result? this vehicle has 32k miles which are 99% highway is in cherry condtion. i've decided to take it to a private mechanic (napa) & pay for his opinion on the rotors, ball joints, arms, brakes, water pump/alternator, etc. once i've paid for his opinion, how do we get dodge to pay for the repairs ...since they won't own up to any of the problems. is there going to be a recall on the rotor/brake problem or the ball joint/arm problem? my brakes usually last at least 60k miles & i have never had problems with suspension on any of my new cars. then, i'm getting rid of it.*ak

While driving nb on southwest highway in palos the light changed to yellow, then red, i applied the brakes and the vehicle was slowing down as normal. suddenly the brake pedal hit the floor as if the hydraulics fluid had been let out of the brake system. the abs and brake light went on and i could hear the anti lock system making noise. i pumped the brakes quickly and car stopped in just enough time to prevent an accident. i pulled to the side of the road and opened the hood to inspect the fluid levels, they were perfect, no leaks either. i restarted the car and the abs and brake light went out, the brakes do not appear to be working correctly however, i will have a mechanic check them out on friday.

While driving at road speed southbound on nc state road 1922, and approaching a stop sign at the intersection with nc state highway 98, i noticed a sudden and nearly complete loss of braking power accompanied by brake pedal travel to the floor. no visible fluid leakage exists, nor are any diagnostic lights illluminated on the vehicle's dashboard. replacement of the brake master cylinder was done, and the failure persisted.. the failure is persistent and occurs with every use of the brake pedal. the consequences are greatly increased stopping distance with pedal travel to the floor even under moderate foot pressure. diagnosis by certified dodge mechanics after consultation with chrysler indicate a failure of the abs accumulator. failed part is available for analysis. no additional work has been completed at the time of this filing.

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 dodge durango. while driving 25 mph, the vehicle began driving roughly and smoke appeared under the hood. the brakes stiffened when the brake pedal was depressed. the contact eased off the brakes, but they failed completely. more smoke appeared under the hood. the contact attempted to pull the vehicle over, but lost control. she heard two snapping noises under the hood. she applied the emergency brake, which stopped the vehicle. the passenger opened the hood and noticed flames in the engine. they called the fire department and a report was filed. the engine fire spread to the passenger compartment of the vehicle. a few minutes later, the vehicle was engulfed in flames. there were no injuries. prior to the fire, repairs had been made to the engine because it would stall and overheat. the contact brought the vehicle in for service the day after the vehicle was purchased in november of 2008. the current and failure mileages were 124,000.

While driving 55 mph on the highway i depressed the brake pedal to slow down and the pedal went to the floor and abs lights came on. thinking the system needed to bleed i had that done. i drove the vehicle home , and found it very difficult to stop when needed. i had the following parts replaced: master cylnder, brake power booster, abs system, rear wheel cylinders ,and had the lines flushed. i still have absolutely no brakes! there was no brake pressure at all. the pedal went straight to the floor with no resistance. took truck to mechanic, and they could not find the cause of the problem. so it still sat with no brakes. *ak

My wife was travelling at 65 mph on a clear day, on dry pavement when traffic reduced speed ahead of her. she slowed by gradually applying the brakes. while applying additional brake pedal pressure, the vehicle continued to slow down, but not at a rate sufficient to prevent a collision. the 2000 dodge durango 4x4 is equipped with abs, which did not actuate at any time while attempting to slow. prior to the collision, the brake pedal was pressing as firmly as possible. the vehicle was taken to a local dodge dealer where the brakes and abs were checked. the initial response was that vehicles with abs do not stop the same as vehicles without abs; if pressure is gradually applied, the anti-lock feature will not activate. the brakes must be released and then applied rapidly to activate the abs. the dealer stated that the abs is operating properly but the front rotors were out of round. the rotors were causing the brakes to grab, causing the abs to activate. the front brake pads were replaced with oem pads, and the front rotors were resurfaced. following repairs, my wife and i tested the vehicle to determine whether the initial condition of failure could be duplicated. during this test, the abs was activated several times. it should be noted here that the abs had never been activated in the 14 months of ownership prior to this test. i had my wife drive the vehicle to determine whether, under similar 'simulated' conditions, she would activate the abs, under sufficient brake pedal pressure. she was able to activate the abs each time the gradual increase in brake pedal pressure was applied. we believe there is still a reliability question of the abs on the dodge durango and that the vehicle may fail to reduce speed sufficiently to avoid a collision under conditions which should pose no safety concern and we are questioning the safety of continuing to drive our 2000 dodge.*ak

Approximately 20 occurrences of anti-lock brake failure in hard braking situations, resulting in one accident in 2002. as the brakes are applied, they will cut out and a humming noise can be heard from the motor/front of the vehicle. sometimes the braking will kick back on after a moment or two, other times the brake pedal must be released and reapplied in order to achieve normal braking. on the may 2, 2003 incident, i was attempting to stop at a red light, traveling 25 mph, clear and sunny day, 52 degrees. the light changed quickly and i began braking. as i depressed the brake harder, the brakes seemed to give out and i heard the humming noise. the durango slowed to about 2-5 mph but maintained that speed, even with the brake pedal fully depressed. as i was about to roll into the intersection, i released the brakes and quickly reapplied them. the durango shot forward briefly, but the brakes then kicked in normally and i was able to stop all forward momentum. most of the above incidents have been on sunny days, dry conditions with an average air temp of 60 degrees. we have mentioned this to the dodge dealership that maintains our vehicle and the braking system was inspected. they stated that the brakes were operating within specs and that with abs, there will be a pause as the abs kicks in. my wife and i have both had prior vehicles with abs and have never had this situation before. *nlm

My husband was driving our car and was approaching a red light,at 20 miles per hour. as the light changed to red he pressed down on the brakes and it did not slow down any, he proceeded to go through the light applying more pressure to the brakes which failed him. he left tire marks on the road for about 37 ft and ended up hitting a vehicle and in the end there were 4 vehicles total. i have researched on line and have found out that there have been problems with the rear brakes on dodge durango's that were made in 1999. our durango is a 2000 but was manufactured in december 1999. we feel that in light of this info, we should have recieved some form of recall letter from the dealers which we have not as yet. we are not sure of the total cost of the accident as yet, so the figures are just quotes so far. *ak

I have a 2000 dodge durango r/t with factory 17 wheels. it was purchased from rusnak dodge in pasadena, california with those wheels on it. after several years of poor braking experience, with the abs system activating prematurely, and several times at the dealership without a fix, a mechanic accidentally discovered the problem. there is no available selection in the software of the on board computer to allow for 17 wheels. all of the selections are for the 15 wheels that come on the standard model. the dealership was able to correct the problem by measuring the circumferance of my tires, calculating how many times they rotate in a mile, and creating a setting for the 17 wheels. the vehicle stops far better now. i am concerned about other drivers who would have no way to know this, because i am a 27 year veteran fire department captain and paramedic, and respond to traffic collisions quite regularly.

Warped front brake rotors are causing severe vibration in the brake pedal. dealer does not recomend resurfacing because there is insufficient material and thinning the rotors will compound the problem. dealer says replacement parts will last just as long based on driving habits. napa sells rotors with a lifetime warranty. the rotors from the factory are a safety problem that dodge is passing off on the customer. no well maintained vehicle should need to have new rotors installed at just over 20,000 miles.

The galt fire protection district has 2 dodge durango's 4x4. during an inspection of the brakes, it was discovered the brake line on the front left wheel was rubbing the chassis. the metal brake line near the caliper was worn more then half way through the wall of the brake line. upon inspecting the other side it was discovered the right front brake line was also worn. i inspected the other dodge durango and discovered it was also warring in the same place. failure of the front brake hydraulic system will reduce the vehicle's braking ability as much as 70%. in my professional judgment, this problem is worthy of a formal investigation and a recall, if others dodge durangos are found with this problem. the galt fire protection district's affected vehicles are as follows: 1b4hs28n2yf255795 with 36,101 miles and 1b4hs28nyf255796 with 42,888 miles thank you brian marriott fire mechanic galt fire protection district. *la

The brake line to the front driver's side wheel cylinder is directly under the battery. this line does not have any kind of protective shielding to prevent battery acid residue from depositing on the line. i have had this line, and the battery, replaced once by the dealer at 26468 miles. now the dealer does not want to replace the brake line again at 36500 miles. this is being blamed on a faulty battery, that would be prorated. they say corrosion on the brake line is not a problem. it seems like potential brake line failure is a hazard to me. my wife drives this vehicle daily and this is the good family car. i've never had a vehicle that did not have a shield of some type under the battery to prevent this type of corrosion.*ak

I carried my vehicle to sears automotive shop to have my brakes checked because my brake pedal was spongy. the mechanics checked my truck and said my brakes were fine, but i had a bad master cylinder. they didn't touch anything, but they told me to take it to the dealer because it's under warranty. carl gregory checked the brakes and came to the same conclusion, the master cylinder was bad. they ordered the part and it was in the next day. they put the new master cylinder on and my brakes are still spongy. my brake pedal continues to go almost to the floor before they start braking. i am still trying to get the problem fixed.*ak

On october 26th at approximately 3:40pm my wife, carrying our six children, was driving our 2000 dodge durango on chicago's lake shore drive when the right front wheel popped off. fortunately there wher no injuries related to this potentially fatal mechanical breakdown. our durango has less than 75,000 miles on it. it is our understanding that many dodge durangos have experienced this problem however, neither dodge nor the nhtsa has done anything about it. *ak
