I was pulling out of my circular driveway steering left and the wheel base wouldn't turn. so i backed up and continue to go around the curve, once i reached about 200 ft off my driveway, my car come to a complete stop on it's own. i backed into my driveway dragging my passenger side front wheel sideways. once i got out to check what was going on, my tie rod end had become completely stripped off the rack and pinion. after further inspections, somehow the groves on the rack and pinion had wore down so much it allowed the tie rod to strip and release. i was so glad i hadn't been driving with my children on the highway, this would have caused my vehicle to flip and probably kill us. i know have to replace my rack and pinion and tie rod and just replacing the ball joints on this vehicle not a couple months ago. i am very frightened to drive it now in fear this will happen again.

I own a 2000 dodge durango, and it often will just shut down while i'm driving. i have owned it since october 2008, and this has happened 12 or 13 times. i receive a no bus signal on my odometer display. i have replaced battery terminals, and a battery. it seems to happen far more often in hot weather. it sometimes happens when i'm driving 65 mph on the freeway, and then the car shuts down and i lose power steering (very dangerous), brakes (even more dangerous) and the accelerator doesn't function. *tr

September 13, 2001 my husband curtis joyner was killed in a crash in hernando, ms due to poor wheel base structure and poor wheel balance structure of durango's of handling curves, was stated by accident reconstructing crew that's what caused the vehicle to rollover in curves. i hired attorney mcgraw of olivebranch, ms; who later stated he did not have the time to put into this matter, but was certainly a good case. i emailed dateline regarding this matter also. i say one night on their show where they showed how the durango's did not pass the crash in curves or on the road. *nm

After two weeks of purchasing our (2 years old @ that time)durango, as we were driving we heard a loud screaching noise, we found a piece that appearantly broke off, it had to do with the brakes we were told. later our transmission wasnt functioning properly, it needed new sensor. when steering it screaches (had problem right after purchasing) and its been getting worse, we took it to dealer and they flushed power steering fluid and we also had to have right ball joint replaced at the same time. when steering it still sounds bad. we had to replace the battery a year after purchasing one at the dealership and a month after that our transmission went out. dealer wanted to charge $3700.00. we took it somewhere else, hope to pick up today from shop will be paying $2570.00. *ak

The steering, suspension, and wheels suck!!! on my 2000 dodge durango.n feb. 15, 2003 while driving my durango, it totally lost control, causing me to side swipe one car, then cause damage to a second and third car. i continue to drive a vehicle that i do not feel safe in. with four children i can not afford to purchase another car. if i could get out of my contract with dodge and trade it in for a safer suv, i would. when riding i constantly experience my rear wheels sliding to my right; this usually happens whenever i ride over pot holes or bumps in the street, which is practically evey couple dozen feet in the city. my driving experience with my 2000 dodge durango is so unsatisfying. prior to me purchasing my dodge, i was the owner of not one, but two toyota camry's. i made the choice not to go back to the toyota dealer to purchase an suv. instead, as a token of my appreciation to my country. i thought it was best to purchase an american made vehicle; you know, keep the money at home. every day i questioned that theory. usually i'm not this harsh of a person, but when it comes down to my children's safety; well, i get pretty pissed. we limit our long distance traveling time. i totally do not drive when its raining, unless i absolutely have to. on highways i drive at least 5-10 miles under the speed limit; for fear of losing control. and to top things off i have this grinding type noise up and around my axle thing; that no one at the two dodge repair garages seems to know what it is exactly. i had my ball joints replaced twice. one month after i got brand new brakes put on, they started to squeak. i was told that the majority of dodge suv's brakes squeak, its just how the manufacturers make them; go figure. *ak

Upon arriving home from a family vacation, total trip of 200 miles, and towing an eighteen foot trailer, we suddenly lost all power steering ability on our 2000 dodge durango. that was a very scary experience. it is also a very premature part failure due to the fact that our durango has only 50,000 miles on it. we are currently awaiting the full replacement of the power steering pump due to the fact that the power steering pump shaft inside the pump suddenly and unexplainably broke. i am really glad that this did not occur during our travel on the major highways we had to take on our way home, especially since we had our four year old grandson in the vehicle with us.

I bought a new dodge durango in 2000 and despite taking good care of it i have had several problems. the first problem were the safty belts coming unclipped for no reason and then sticking open so they couldn't be reclipped. the middle seats the middle seats to not always latch completely down after being folded up, the headlight switch in the steering column has a short in it causing the headlights to go out while i am driving at night. i had to bring it in because the engine light came on and was informed that there was a defective part that the dealership had been notified in a bulletin. they replaced the part, but charged me for the labor. the latest problem is a power stearing problem that the dealership informed me that because of a leaky seal i have to replace the entire rack and pinion for almost $900. i feel that this is absurd on a car that is only 3 years old.*ak

STEERING - RACK AND PINION - RACK

When turining my 2000 dodge durango i heard a poping noise, my mechanic told me on 10/27/04 my ball joints were bad and that the whole sterring rack needed to be replaced. i called the local dealer and was told it is not covered under warranty, i then called dodge they advised the same. i looked on the internet and have found numerous complaints to consumer affairs. the repair will cost $1200.00, this vehicle has only 48,000 miles. from what i have read and the cbs news report it seems that dodge should have a recall for this problem before people start getting killed.*ak

On may 1, 2004 i went to a midas shop in the cincinnati, ohio area due to a bad left pull on the front of my durango. the vehicle has approximately 69,500 miles. my intention was to get an alignment. the technician notified me that my right front upper ball joint was shot and the right inside tie rod was shot. in calling for the repair parts, the technician notified me that the part would have to come from dodge. i checked with another mechanic that i use and the problems were verified. this mechanic contacted a local dodge dealer and was told that the whole front rack would have to be replaced. the estimated cost was $500 in materials. i expect expensive labor charges to be necessary due to the required time to replace this system. this is a financial burden and has caused me to wait to get the necessary repair. based on the information in odi #10061274 and ea03023, i am concerned about the effect on my vehicle and future safety concerns. the mechanic is currently searching for the part. also, since it is worthless to get an alignment with these parts bad, i am wearing out expensive tires waiting for this repair.*ak

While consumer was traveling 60-65 mph wheel shook violently. consumer was close to the right side of the road, and when he came upon an exit he took it and pulled to the side. when he got out and looked at wheel it had turned toe-in. consumer immediately called dealer, and had the vehicle towed. vehicle was repaired at cost of $2100.00. there was no mention of a recall or investigation. dealer replaced the wheel bearings, tie rods, steering column, and the steering rack. all those parts had to be replaced because of ball joint failure, and the wheel coming almost off vehicle.*ak

I have always had problems with my durango since about 12,000 (now have 68,000). replacement of ball joints, brake calipers, and continuous checks for clicking and vibration feeling in the steering column (mostly when turning left). now i am told that i must invest $750. for a new power steering rack. i don't mind paying for normal wear and tear, but this has not been right from the start. i believe there is something defective with the steering and front end. each time it is the left side with the problem. this just does not seem right. i have enjoyed my durango except for these front end problems. i am now to the point of selling at a loss since i do not feel safe driving my durango. the steering makes noises and has a funny response to the turning process. could you please review closer at least for those who will still be owning a durango. *la
STEERING - WHEEL AND HANDLE BAR

Engine has had a miss in it since we purchased the car. we have took it back to the dealer 3 times complaining, with the first one was before it had 2000 miles on the car. the dealership told us the first time that it would/did not show up on the computer until it had over 2000 miles on the car. so drive it until then, and if it still did it bring it back in. we brought it back in at 3,803 miles,7,596 miles and then at 18,275. at 7,596 miles they reprogrammed the car and told us to use unleaded plus gas instead of regular. it did no good to change the grade of gas. then we brought it back in at 18,275 miles with 4 different problems and they changed the fan clutch. the car still missed after this. the dealership told us at this time that they had 3 other cars with the same problem and that chrysler does not know what the problem is and can not fix it. as far as the clock spring, they were going to replace it, but chrysler told them instead to change out the steering column instead.*ak

Pulled into garage and car would not go into park, reverse, drive, etc. - digital gauge on the dash showed that the car was in gear 1. the car felt like it was in park although we had a difficult time turning the car off since gears would not work properly. even though the car was in park, it was able to be rocked back and forth as if it was in neutral.we had it towed away on a flatbed to the dealer since we were not able to drive it. we were told that a part snapped in the steering column. we've complained to dealer on two separate occasions (mileage 5963 and 14120) about the problems in the steering column portion of the vehicle - the service department couldn't duplicate the problem, and told us not to worry about it... it makes me wonder what would have happened if i was driving (with my two small children) when this part snapped??*ak
