04V596000DAIMLERCHRYSLER CORPORATIONfrom 01/07/1999 to 12/31/2002V (Vehicle)59270712/21/2004ODICHRYSLER GROUP LLC12/21/200412/21/2004
Defect SummaryOn certain sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks equipped with four-wheel drive (4x4), if moisture leaks into the front suspension upper ball joint, evacuation of the lubricant and corrosion of the joint may cause the joint to wear over an extended period of time. this could cause a clunking noise in the front suspension, which may not always be heard by the vehicle occupants.
Consequence SummaryExcessive wear in the upper ball joint may allow it to separate, which could result in loss of control of the vehicle.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace the front suspension upper ball joints. this safety improvement campaign began on december 21, 2004. owners can contact daimlerchrysler at 1-800-853-1403.
NotesThis action is deemed a safety improvement campaign and is not being conducted under the safety act.

Defect SummarySkf is recalling 2,805 hub units, part no. br930361, sold as a service part for 1997-2004 dodge dakota vehicles and 1999-2003 dodge durango vehicles equipped with 2-wheel drive & rear axle abs. due to a specification error, the rotor pilot for the hub unit may be too long. this results in the wheel to not be seated fully against the hub flange face during mounting.
Consequence SummaryImproper seating of the wheel can result in excessive vibration, brake rotor noise, difficulty removing the wheel after installation and operation of the vehicle, and possibly wheel-end separation during vehicle operation. should wheel-end separation occur, the driver could loose control of the vehicle, possibly resulting in a crash.
Corrective SummarySkf will notify owners and replace the defective hub units free of charge. the recall began on november 5, 2008. owners may contact skf vsm north america customer service at 1-800-644-8999.
NotesSkf's recall no. skf pro 08-029us/ca.this recall only pertains to aftermarket skf hub units and has no relation to any original equipment installed on dodge dakota or durango vehicles manufactured by chrysler.customers may contact the national highway traffic safety administration's vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (tty: 1-800-424-9153); or go to http://www.safercar.gov.

Daimlerchrysler corporation (dcc) is recalling the target population of approximately 600,000 my 2000 through 2003 durango and dakota vehicles with four-wheel drive to replace the front suspension upper ball joints with redesigned parts that do not have the joint integrity concerns and have substantially improved joint retention capacity (nhtsa recall no. 04v-596).though dcc does not admit to a safety-defect in the subject components, odi believes that the facts in this investigation show otherwise.because of the low rates of separation incidents in the remaining subject vehicles, a safety-related defect has not been identified in those populations and further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that no safety-related defect exists in those vehicles.the agency reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.for additional information, see the attached closing report.

In july 2003, odi opened pe03-032 based on 4 consumer complaints alleging separation of an upper ball joint.complaints alleged an unexpected collapse in the front end and in some occasions the ball joint separation is alleged to have resulted in the wheel, brake rotor, and steering knuckle separating from the vehicle.since opening the pe, odi has received 23 additional complaints related to ball joint separation. daimlerchrysler has identified a wearout concern in the subject ball joints that is believed to occur after water intrusion evacuates the joint lubricant.daimlerchrysler does not believe the condition poses an unreasonable risk to safety because the suspension design in the subject vehicles significantly reduces the likelihood of joint separation.over 99 percent of the failures are related to worn ball joints (e.g., noise complaints).daimlerchrysler revised the repair procedure in august 2003 to allow the upper ball joints to be serviced separately from the upper control arm and reduce repair costs. daimlerchrysler changed the supplier of the subject ball joints from trw to new castle machining & forge for my 2000 vehicles.my 2000 durango vehicles account for 25 of the 37 separation complaints.the upper ball joint was redesigned in my 2003.this investigation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis to further assess the alleged defect in my 2000-02 durango vehicles.

On october 22nd 2004 i took my 2002 dodge durango in for routine service, an oil change, tire rotation etc. it had been riding rougher than normal and i had noticed that the tires were wearing unevenly so i asked them to look it over and see if there was anything wrong. upon examining the vehicle the mechanic found that both upper and lower ball joints needed to be replaced along with the control arm. my vehicle has only 38316 miles and had to put nearly $1000 for something that should not have worn out that quickly. had i not gone in for routine maintenance at that time something far more serious could have happened and to make matters worse i now need to replace my tires.*ak

When i purchased this car i had concerns that it had either been in a accident or a flood. i wrote to the attorney generals office, and asked to cancel my contract because i felt that i had been deceived. i felt that there weren't any other options for me, i was now stuck with a lemon, and i hoped and prayed that the car would last until i could afford to pay for it. when i purchased tires , i was informed that the ball joints had completely shredded the insides of my tires on the front end, and had to be replaced immediately . i contacted a dodge dealership and was informed that the upper ball joints on the front-end were recalled, and replaced in 2004, which was two years before i purchased the car in 2006. i feel that since dodge has had this car on more than two occasion because of the frontend, (the dealership which repaired the car after accident has lost their license to service dodge vehicles) i was regularly using this vehicle to drive my kids to school. i am a single parent, and can't afford to have their defect corrected. i am afraid to drive the durango long distance.. i have written a letter of complaint with the chrysler office in michigan, but have not received a response. i have also attempted to reach the customer service line with no results. *tr

I have 45,000 miles on my dodge durango. ever since i bought the car new i have not been able to keep the vehicle aligned. i have gone through several sets of new tires. i recently had the ball joints replaced. firestone tire dealership told be the wheel was ready to fall of dodge fixed it under warranty but made it sound like no biggie. my car was still making a bad noise when i turned and then it started doing it when i drove straight. i was then told my wheel bearings were completely shot...they were worst on the right side the same side that my ball joints were in the worst shape. i paid to have the wheel bearing replaced. then i took my car to firestone to get it aligned and they told me my upper control arm on the right side was shot and it was not holding the alignment. so no i have to have this replaced. i feel there is more than just ball joint problems with the durango and dakotas and i would like you to look into the whole suspension and front end and see what is going on with these cars... *nm

Noise and knocking sound coming from front end while driving, could also feel the knocking thru steering wheel. took vehicle to goodyear to have tires rotated and was told by them that all ball joints were worn and would probably fail soon, possibly causing and accident. called dealer and they said they would replace the parts under warranty (only 28,000 miles on vehicle), but couldn't guarantee that they wouldn't have to be replaced again in 30,000 miles. contacted dodge and found out there was no recall on this problem and there was not enough evidence of a problem to support a recall at this time, but that is not what i read on the internet.

Over a period of time, i noticed extensive noise in the front end of my 2002 durango. it got worse and was most prominent when striking potholes or changes in the surface elevation when driving or moving the vehicle. at 35,000 miles i took it in to the selling dealership for a check up. i was concerned about the ball joint situation, as it was quite a public affair. the front end noise became so loud that it sounded as if someone was striking the undercarriage with a sledge hammer.*ak it was determined that all four of the ball joints, upper and lower, had failed, were worn out. they were all replaced at no cost to me, as the repair was still under warranty. i just wanted to report this, as the upper ball joints are not the only problem with this suspension system. i trust that the newer ball joints, not trw, were placed on my vehicle. if this is a repair that must occur every 36k miles or so, this will get expensive. thank you.

2002 dodge durango slt 2wd: ball joints were replaced after recall was issued, however about 6 months after they were replaced, the exact same noises began occurring again. took car to dealer with the complaint and they denied the new ball joints were worn. upon getting new front tires installed at sears (about 3 months after the dealership inspected the joints) they inspected the car without being asked (it is part of their service) and on the report they issued, it said the ball joints were indeed worn. the recall notices i have read about the replacement of the original ball joints state that if the joints fail you can lose control of the vehicle, so obviously i am in fear that my car can fail at any given time. i am writing this to make it aware that i have already had the recall replacement, but fear that the replacements are also defective as indicated by an independent, unsolicited inspection. *nm

I have a 2002 dodge durango that is experiencing every problem that is known with dodge ball joints and brakes. apr-2004 i have been experiencing while driving, the steering wheel freezing while turning left and the steering locks at 20-25mph. i took the truck to greenfield dodge and informed them of the problems, also the problems with the front brakes. they noted that they test drove the vehicle found the lower ball joints to have excessive play (.075). the service group informed me that this incident was not covered under my warranty. after several hours they finally decided to replace the part. they informed me that the car would be ready at 7:00pm that evening the car would be ready. after waiting several hours i made arrangements to get to the service shop, where they told me that they never brought the car in because other things came up. i had no way to get home so i had to rent a car from the dealer ship. the next day i picked up the car and had to pay $30 for the rental and $108 for my deductible. regarding the brakes. i decided to have the brakes fixed at midas because i was not happy with the service at dodge. the mechanic at midas removed the pads and the caliber and informed me that the pins that go into the caliber were stripped. he stated that this is a common thing that they have seen with the dodge trucks. they had to tap and install a heli-coil. i picked up the car and had to pay $30 for the rental and $108 for my deductible. the entire fee for the brake service with the additional parts that included a heli-coil kit and service came to $292.13. the two day experience left a very bad taste in my mouth and wallet.*ak

I manage the fleet for the fbi jacksonville division and while servicing one of our vehicles, an 02 2-wd durango, noticed that the front suspension made a creaking noise when i lowered the vehicle back to the ground from our frame lift and inspection of the suspension revealed that the upper ball joints were worn out. they had about 1/4 inch of play and the vehicle only had 30,000 mi. on it. the boots were not torn nor has this vehicle been used under severe conditions. we only have one other 02 durango and it is a 4wd but at 22,000 mi. the upper ball joints are showing some wear/play. after having to actually jack the vehicle up in the dealer service lane and show them the play they replaced the control arms under warranty on the 2wd and i haven't taken the 4wd one in yet. this has to be a defect, either the joints didn't get any lube when manufactured or they have a problem with the materials to cause them to wear so quickly. i didn't get the old parts so i can't say for sure. i have not seen any recall on these, i believe there is one on the later models for a similar problem. when i take the next one in i will see if they will let me have the original control arms but i'm doubtful they will. i consider ourselves lucky to have caught this before it caused an accident.*ak

Failed ball joints: arm, upper control had to have the above parts replaced on 2002 dodge durango at 36956miles on the vehicle. heard a clunking noise when turned the wheel one direction, which prompted me to take it to the shop. when vehicle was purchased it had been a demo and had 28179miles.i'm sure they replaced the bad ball joints with the same model of balljoints therefore i'm affraid they are going to fail again. i have a 1 year old daughter and the vehicle is used to take her to and from daycare as well as to transport me to work.i am scared to drive my car and am looking into trading it off for a ford.

I have noticed strange sounds eminating from the front suspension of my dodge durango since october of 2003. initially i assumed these sounds were from cold shocks since it first occured with the onset of cold weather.*ak after seeing the story on cbs, i am now concerned about the ball joints. i would like to have the ball joints checked but i am afraid to have the dealership check them.

I own a 2002 dodge durango with 35,000 miles that has always been properly maintained. i have already had the dealer replace 2 worn ball joints last week, i've had the brake pads replaced twice, and one rotor on one side (in front) turned, and i am still hearing strange noises. i would like an investigation done on my vehicle, as i am driving my daughter and myself around everyday, and my factory warranty is about to expire. its obvious daimler chrysler is not concerned with saving peoples lives, as i have just witnessed the march third evening edition of cbs news with dan rather. i am rather concerned that the transportation safety administration has let daimler chrysler get away with not recalling these problems considering the large amount of complaints with these suspension systems. please help me and contact me. thank you. email me at jcookie100@earthlink.net or phone me (858)220-0419. im not real sure what to do at this point. thank you. signed, a concerned parent and driver.*ak

Took my vehicle to dealer for routine service. when i went to pick up the vehicle, i was told that the ball joints were in such bad condition that they could not release the vehicle to me without replacing them because of the potential for an accident. they said that the replacement parts were backordered because of so many similar situations and that it might take a week or more until i received my vehicle back. the vehicle had roughly 20,000 miles on it and it was still under warranty. if this is such a common and hazardous problem, why no recall? *ak

With just over 16k miles on my 2002 dodge durango, i noticed my front passenger side tire wearing badly on the outer edge. upon jacking the vehicle under the lower control arm, i found that the upper ball joint had excessive looseness when the tire/spindle assembly was shaken. i also found slightly less play on the drivers side. the upper controlarm/ball joint assemblys were replaced under warranty but i am concerned of whether this will happen again in another 16k miles.how can i be assured the dealer replaced the parts with an improved version? the worn tire due to this obvious defect is incidental damage according to the dealer and is not covered under the warranty and so i must replace it myself. i am not happy about this either.*ak

2002 dodge durango: both upper ball joints replaced at 18,000 miles. dealer initially refused repair citing no problem found. i had to prove the ball joints were defective by jacking the vehicle and demonstrating excessive play by moving the wheel that was off the ground. only then did the dealer admit the ball joints were defective and replaced them. you need to know there are more durango owners out here with defective ball joints. in my opinion, they should last 100,000 miles+, not 18,000.*ak

I purchased a 2002 dodge durango in june 2002. my durango started squeaking and popping at about 17,000 miles. i have complained of squeaking and popping in the front-end. every time it was brought to the dealership for repair, they never found anything wrong and said they could not hear the squeaking noise, but as soon as i drove off the lot there it was as sure as it was when i brought it in. i would tell them that they needed to drive the vehicle in order to hear it squeak. my durango got to the point where the front-end felt like i had every little control of the vehicle. not to mention it felt very unsafe to drive. it would also squeak without even driving it. all you had to do was get out of the vehicle and it would squeak. on october 2, 2003 i had no choice but to bring my vehicle in again because it was beginning to feel to unsafe to drive. at that time they discovered that both the right and left upper control arm ball joints had excessive play and needed to be replaced. *jb

Had to have the upper ball joints/control arms & lower ball joints replaced on my 2002 dodge durango sxt 4x4 under warranty due to failing pa state safety inspection. the vehicle had 27k miles on it at the time. the veh now has 40k on it & i'm experiencing a knocking noise coming from the frt end again. a private shop stated that the the lower ball joints have excesive movement & must be replaced again. i took the veh back to the dealer & theye stated that they will not cover them under warranty again due to the mileage. this veh is only 17 months old with 40,000 all hwy mileage & was never taken off road. this is unacceptable in my opinion & a severe safety issue if the ball joint does separate. *ak

Purchased durango new jan 2002 in kentucky. within 6 months dodge recalled it to replace whole back axle assembly (dodge stated it was too small for durango). since owning, when putting into reverse the transmission hesitates, and the vehicle barely moves (dealer stated could not find any problem). in alaska the check engine light comes on when going from warm garage into cold outdoors, stays on for a week (dealer could not find anything wrong). loud pounding noise when traveling above 40 mph with back windows down. durango has less than 20,000 miles and back seat shows considerable wear where seat belt latch contacts seat (poor design/placement of latch). *ph

SUSPENSION - REAR - SPRINGS - LEAF SPRING ASSEMBLY
03/31/200660000209/09/2004
No specific events lead up to this failure. this is simply a defective, poorly manufacturer's part. i was lucky to avoid a serious incident in this case, others may not be. the main leaf of the rear leaf springs break at the front eye which is where it mounts to the frame. if this happens, the rear end is free to move back and forth as much as the shackle will let it, effectively allowing your rear axle to steer the rear of your vehicle wherever it may choose (read: very dangerous.) i replaced the leaf spring with the issue (the driver's side) with a dodge oem part ($175 for the part, 1.9 labor hours according to the dealership if i were to have them replace it.) i'm a very competent mechanic, so the labor hour inquiry was just for my records. upon completing the correction to the side with the failure, and during the test drive, i experienced literally an identical failure on the opposite side. again, i was lucky to be driving slow and paying attention enough to notice the issue before it turned into a serious incident. i have both defective leaf springs in my possession. they are both off of the same vehicle, a 2002 dodge durango with just 60,000 miles. this vehicle has never been used to tow, haul, or complete any other strenuous activity. this is a very serious safety issue, when just one breaks, the rear end has enough movement to steer into the car next to you. if both were to break, this could very possibly lead to a chain of failures resulting in a serious incident. *nm
