Defect SummaryOn certain sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks equipped with four-wheel drive (4x4), if moisture leaks into the front suspension upper ball joint, evacuation of the lubricant and corrosion of the joint may cause the joint to wear over an extended period of time. this could cause a clunking noise in the front suspension, which may not always be heard by the vehicle occupants.
Consequence SummaryExcessive wear in the upper ball joint may allow it to separate, which could result in loss of control of the vehicle.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace the front suspension upper ball joints. this safety improvement campaign began on december 21, 2004. owners can contact daimlerchrysler at 1-800-853-1403.
NotesThis action is deemed a safety improvement campaign and is not being conducted under the safety act.

Defect SummarySkf is recalling 2,805 hub units, part no. br930361, sold as a service part for 1997-2004 dodge dakota vehicles and 1999-2003 dodge durango vehicles equipped with 2-wheel drive & rear axle abs. due to a specification error, the rotor pilot for the hub unit may be too long. this results in the wheel to not be seated fully against the hub flange face during mounting.
Consequence SummaryImproper seating of the wheel can result in excessive vibration, brake rotor noise, difficulty removing the wheel after installation and operation of the vehicle, and possibly wheel-end separation during vehicle operation. should wheel-end separation occur, the driver could loose control of the vehicle, possibly resulting in a crash.
Corrective SummarySkf will notify owners and replace the defective hub units free of charge. the recall began on november 5, 2008. owners may contact skf vsm north america customer service at 1-800-644-8999.
NotesSkf's recall no. skf pro 08-029us/ca.this recall only pertains to aftermarket skf hub units and has no relation to any original equipment installed on dodge dakota or durango vehicles manufactured by chrysler.customers may contact the national highway traffic safety administration's vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (tty: 1-800-424-9153); or go to http://www.safercar.gov.

Daimlerchrysler corporation (dcc) is recalling the target population of approximately 600,000 my 2000 through 2003 durango and dakota vehicles with four-wheel drive to replace the front suspension upper ball joints with redesigned parts that do not have the joint integrity concerns and have substantially improved joint retention capacity (nhtsa recall no. 04v-596).though dcc does not admit to a safety-defect in the subject components, odi believes that the facts in this investigation show otherwise.because of the low rates of separation incidents in the remaining subject vehicles, a safety-related defect has not been identified in those populations and further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that no safety-related defect exists in those vehicles.the agency reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.for additional information, see the attached closing report.

In july 2003, odi opened pe03-032 based on 4 consumer complaints alleging separation of an upper ball joint.complaints alleged an unexpected collapse in the front end and in some occasions the ball joint separation is alleged to have resulted in the wheel, brake rotor, and steering knuckle separating from the vehicle.since opening the pe, odi has received 23 additional complaints related to ball joint separation. daimlerchrysler has identified a wearout concern in the subject ball joints that is believed to occur after water intrusion evacuates the joint lubricant.daimlerchrysler does not believe the condition poses an unreasonable risk to safety because the suspension design in the subject vehicles significantly reduces the likelihood of joint separation.over 99 percent of the failures are related to worn ball joints (e.g., noise complaints).daimlerchrysler revised the repair procedure in august 2003 to allow the upper ball joints to be serviced separately from the upper control arm and reduce repair costs. daimlerchrysler changed the supplier of the subject ball joints from trw to new castle machining & forge for my 2000 vehicles.my 2000 durango vehicles account for 25 of the 37 separation complaints.the upper ball joint was redesigned in my 2003.this investigation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis to further assess the alleged defect in my 2000-02 durango vehicles.

I have notice a clunking sound in the front right of my durango for some approximately six months. i recently brought it to my mechanic who stated it would need to have the upper right ball joint replace. it was brought to my attention that this issue was recalled on other 2003 durango, however, my vin number was not included in the campaign (04v596000). this issue appears to go beyond the cut off for the recall since review of the complaints indicates numerous other similar issues.

There is a recall for defective ball joints on the 2003 dodge durango, but when i called dodge my vin is not included. i am having my ball joints replaced by a repair shop today as i was told that they are in very bad shape and i am risking having them separate while driving which could result in the wheel falling off in a high speed situation causing a crash and possible injury or death. i feel that if this recall is only for some of the same year and model of my vehicle then they should at least have them all called in to have the dealer inspect them for safety. it is going to cost almost $1000 for me to have this repair made. but that is small price to pay to ensure the safety of me and my family. i have heard this complaint from many many other owners and repair shops for this vehicle and feel it should be looked into.

Front end problems with m 2003 dodge durango. have had steering rack replaced, inner & outer ball joints replaced as well as both upper control arms. steering went out on my wife while making a right hand turn. both inner tie-rod ends snapped out and car lost complete steering control. car ran into parked car causing substantial damage to both vehicles. because of the low speed no injuries occurred, had this happened at highway speed. i could have been killed along with others on the highway. what are you waiting for? for a fatality? does it take the life of human being to save money to have this problem solved? please do something, i will never never buy a dodge automobile again and if i see someone making this mistake or looking at dodge i will advise them of all the problems that dodge has and are not willing to back their product. buy a foreign car!!!! *nm

I have to stop far away from a vehicle fear of running in the back of their vehicle. it doesn't seem to want to stop sometime, this has been happening for awhile now alot recently. it cuts off on me if i get in the highway so embarrassing and when that happens i only can take off slow. which causes me to exit the highway and not get back on. i had bought a car vacuum and it stated smoking on me, i was using the socket in the arm rest. i have alot of problems when i use the a/c or heat it cuts off on me and it stalls to take off,it's scary for me and my kids. it rams by it's self and it acts as if it's gone cut off and most of the time it do. it make this putting sounds when it's going to cut off or even when it stops on me. the dealer replace the cadillac converter and my oxygen sensors. i also got a tune up and two of the fuel injectors replace new parts, that i paid for myself. it feels like my front suspension is messed up i had my brakes checked and they are not bad, but you can feel it when you press on the brakes something is not right. *tr

Front ball joint making a clicking sound. in 2005 got a recall letter. called dealer and they said the recall didn;t effect my vehicle. called several times in the next year to see if the recall was on my vehicle yet. the dealer told me no. vehicle kept making clunking noise. at 100,00 miles i pulled in my driveway and the wheel feel of at the right ball joint. tow truck couldn't tow the vehicle due to being all wheel drive. i called chrysler and they told me it wasn;t their problem. i had to hire a mechanic to replace the ball joints in my driveway. tires have worn terrible and truck kept coming out of alignment. i kept good rotation on the tires but couldn't keep the inside from wearing. i do have the defective ball joints. *tr

Power steering rack failed at 73,000 miles. unacceptable that the steering would fail with only 73,000 miles!! paid $900 to have repaired. this was 6 months ago. now they are saying our wheel bearings are failing and are not covered under the recall that was put in place back in 2004. even though the mechanic told us that our wheel would fall off if we didn't have it fixed. that should fall under the category of the recall for the wheel hub. *tr

I noticed my tires were not wearing evenly and i felt and heard a clunk noise every time i back out of my parking spot at work. the dealership inspected and said that the upper and lower ball joints of the right and left wheels of my 2003 dodge durango must be replaced. i see there are recalls for all previous year durangos but not the 2003??? the dealership refused to pay for my replacement. i replaced the left side as they were actually broke, my right side still needs to be replaced and are loose and near failure. i request that dodge reimburse me for the repair as well as replace for free the right side. i would also like two new tires as they now need to be replaced due to the uneven wear and tear. *tr

2003 dodge durango was purchased from a local dealership in wickliffe,oh in april of 08. the vehicle has been at the dealership needing to be serviced in excess of 7 times, from the bushings being replaced to the check engine light repeatedly coming on with the dealerships inability to fix it . i have been in a rental car more than i have driven the vehicle that i purchased from the dealership. there was an evap code as they so eloquently stated so they allegedly fixed that only to find that the check engine light still continually comes on. every time that the problem was supposedly resolved, i was back at the dealership within 2 to 3 days with the same problem again. the management there stated and admitted that they simply can't fix the vehicle therefore they are going to get me out of it so they even had me to pick another vehicle which they said would fit perfectly and should not affect the payment that i have in place right now. i have been hearing about getting this replacement vehicle for over 3 months with no result. the vehicle is not safe when driving on the highway and hitting a bump because it feels as if the front end is going in two different directions. my wife wont drive it, we are scared to put our kids into it and i need your help right away. *tr

Front suspension - drive train - locks - axle - power steering pump vehicle has had consistent front end grinding noise since 30,000 km's. ball joints have been replaced, front axle spyder gears have been replaced. previous 1998 durango had same problem - fix was front wheel bearings. 2003 durango - dealer says that it doesn't require replacement. noise and grinding only happen at slow speed turns left or right. from stop to light acceleration to hard left or right turn, new noise from rear axle - limited slip unit now getting louder. axle oil and limited slip additive have been replaced with factory chrysler oil additive. indicative of same problem with 1998 durango that i had, when rear axle pinion bearing was heavily scored. in that incident the same maintenance was done, but repair was out of warranty by 3,000 km's and chrysler only paid 50% of repair of $700.00. oil changes on complete drivetrain was $590.00 (4x4 with skid plates). this appears to be a metal fatigue problem in combination with engineering specifications that are too wide in tolerances, which allows failure of components to compound problems and create longer term damaging results. ever since dodge trucks went to maintenance free front axle bearings (you can't pack bearings with grease), poor limited slip tolerances in rear axle, and transfer case that's electronically operated, the drivetrain and front suspension components have excessive loads and poor quality components. both durangos that i've owned have had 5 wheel alignments (constant pulling to the left) and no off road driving. strictly highway and city driving. i purchased factory extended warranty on 2003 durango which i highly recommend. so far, out of pocket expenses have been minimal, but durango spends too much time in the shop and is very inconvenient to have serviced constantly. never had issues with warranty parts or dealer not doing warranty recall work. *jb

Sludge build up occurred in the dodge durango.*mr the dealer informed the consumer that there was sludge in the engine and that it was as a result of neglect which then voided the warranty. the consumer explained that the vehicle oil had been changed numerous time by non-dealer mechanic. the dealer nor manufacturer provided any financial assistance. the consumer had the engine replaced by a local repair facility. the consumer's vehicle was making noise in the front end. *nm

When driving my 2003 durango at times it feels like the front wheels are locking up and the truck begins shaking badly. i have had it in the dealership and they say they can't find anything wrong. i also have been hearing strange noise from the front right right tire well. also, my glovebox started hanging down and when i asked the dealership to fix it they charged me and told me that the warranty would not cover it. we don't use the glove box, so the problem was not caused by misuse. at 20,000 miles the warranty should have covered the problem because it is obviously a defective part.*ak

I am currently experiencing a thumping or throttle on the vehicle when i step on the brakes. it occurs in the front of the vehicle on driver's side. i have had the brakes replaced , but this noise still occurs. i have been advised by r&s strauss mechanic that it appeared to be the ball joint/arm. he has encountered many durangos experiencing this problem and advised to seek dealer for repairs since he wa s aware of the accidents that have occurred. wanted to notify your office and other drivers if experiencing similar problems. it appeared that this defect needed to be recalled.*ak

While driving my 2003 durango and started noticing some vibration in the front end so i took the vehicle in to get it checked and it appears the lower ball joints are bad. this is after i had the uppers replaced due to a recall. i am not sure how long these parts are guaranteed to last but i know i have much older vehicles that still have the original parts in them. sounds like they should have recalled more than just the upper ball joints. i am going to have them replaced but i think a failure after such a short time should also be investigated for a possible recall, perhaps checking the whole front suspension would be wise before someone is killed because something falls off the car. *nm

We noticed popping in the front end took durango to dealer they replaced the lower control arm assembly, few months later it started popping again ,we took it back to a dealer and they had to replace both lower control arm assemblies. it has been about 4 months and it is popping again plus they sent us the recall on the upper ball joints. i am scared to let my family ride in this vehicle i believe it has serious problems in the suspension system that have been trying to fix two times and now this will be the third time and theres not even 30000 miles on it. *jb

My wife was driving on the highway, and noticed that our 2003 dodge durango was pulling to the right. 10 minutes later, the lower ball joint completely separated, the upper ball joint snapped off, the axle separated and the wheel fell off while making a low speed right hand turn. the durango then continued to steer to the right and into a parked car, totaling the parked vehicle. the durango pushed the parked car into a wall. so far, nothing has been done to fix the failure, and my dodge dealer is giving me a hard time about warranting the part and subsequent damage. *nm

The reason i am filing a complaint is because the nhtsa has not updated their website according based on a voluntary recall by dodge. there was in article on msn.com today that described a recall of certain dodge durango and dakota models because of a problem with the front/upper ball joint. the nhtsa website lists 4 related defect investigations of this same problem, however all investigations were opened and closed in 2003 and there is no mention of the latest actions by dodge. this website should be updated so people wanted to find out more information and specific models of recalls can find that information.*jb

I bought a used 2003 dodge durango on 2/28/2004. it ran fine for a few days. the front end was not performing as it should. this only has 27,000 miles on it so i thought it needed an alignment. i made an appointment at my mechanic as alignments are not covered under warranty. the day before i was to take it to him the cbs news showed a story on dodge durango's and the upper ball joints. i asked our mechanic to check these also. he found the left side worn and the right side was to the point that it needed to be replaced. i called the dealer ship that it was purchased at and of course they head mechanic stated they knew nothing about it. after my husband mentioned the news story and what our mechanic found, they still tried to say it must be the bearings. the service department was very rude to him even thought it was under warranty. he insisted they be replaced. my husband was a mechanic buy trade so he knows what he is talking about. i feel sorry for the people out there that are not aware of this. our appointment is on 3-9-04. we will of course take the car back to the independent mechanic to inspect they replaced what was wrong. we have been dodge owners for over 20 years and i can not believe something this serious is being hidden by them. they have lost my vote of confidence in reliability. they did not check the durango prior to selling it, otherwise they would have seen the problem immediately. i am afrid to drive my own car for fear of something bad happening. this is a very serious matter and after reading all the complaints from 2002 and on, why is this not being addressed with chrystler? we rely on your service as an independent and we need your backbone in making this a recall issue. please take this as serious as we all do. thank you. *ak

Dodge durango 2003 brought october 2003. on october 21, 2004 while on my way to work (a local high school), a woman fell asleep and hit the durango from behind on the passenger side. the vehicle crossed the oncoming lane of a two-lane minor highway (rte 187) and went into the front yard of a home and hit a tree. speed limit is 35. the front passenger nose of the durango impacted with the tree. the damage to the vehicle was deemed totaled by the other driver's insurance company (state farm). the item we wish to draw to your attention is that the damage to the car involved the suspension rod, which came off and up through the front passenger seat of the carand through the roof. had anyone been sitting there they would have most certainly been skewered. thankfully, i had just dropped my children off . my 16 year old normally sits up front. one should note that the front tire came off the vehicle completely as well. the shoulder part of the seatbelt did not lock and my upper body was allowed to bang around. i spent 4 days in the hospital and was out of work for 5 weeks. i am still only on light duty due to the condition of my knee and the post concussion syndrome i am having. the way the durango came apart seemed unusual, especially the rod throught the floor and seat. we wanted you to be aware. we have pictures of the vehicle after the accident.*ak
