This investigation originated from complaints received by the agency reporting instrument panel (ip) fires on vehicles that were recalled(recall 03v528) by daimlerchrysler (dcc) to correct a defect that caused ip fires.the recall corrected a defect caused by a certain capacitor on the ip printed circuit board (pcb) that could crack and overheat.the fire could occur without warning while the vehicle is parked or in use.the recall remedy was to remove the capacitor from the ip.ips used for vehicles produced after the recall (december 2003) did not contain the capacitor.odi has also received reports of fires in vehicles produced after the recall, which do not have the defective capacitor.dcc and its supplier for the ip have identified a different location on the pcb that may overheat.this investigation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea06-015) to further study this issue.

This investigation originated from complaints received by the agency reporting instrument panel (ip) fires on vehicles that were covered under a prior recall (recall 03v528) by daimler chrysler (dcc) to correct a cracked capacitor in the ip.dcc has now identified another condition that can cause overheating of an integrated circuit that controls interior lighting.this condition affects certain model year 2004-2006 dodge durango vehicles.dcc's march 6, 2007 letter to the agency states, under certain operating conditions, an integrated circuit located in the instrument cluster may overheat and result in an instrument panel fire.dcc will conduct a safety recall to inspect the cluster for damage and replace it if necessary.if the cluster shows no evidence of damage, it will be re-flashed [re-program the cluster] to prevent the potential for this condition.in addition, all vehicles will receive a wiring modification that directs the interior lighting to a portion of the integrated circuit with additional current carrying capacity.this recall covers 328,424 vehicles manufactured from 4/03/03 through 6/30/06.see nhtsa recall number 07v092 for details.

Bought this 04 durango with a hemi, in 2010. it has always had a problem with running rough or stalling after/during rain. something is getting wet? dealership tried to fix it a couple of times. it works fine after it dries. also there was a recall in 2004 for positive battery cable failure possibly causing fire. this vehicle was taken in to have the repair for this recall (#d40) in 2007. the same battery cable is now failing and is in the shop for repair. the battery cables are not available after market so they have been ordered from dodge. there is no provision in the recall to repair when the thing fails even after it was fixed. it started having all kinds of electrical issues so i brought it to repair shop (not dealership). dealership says they can't do anything. i did call daimler/chrysler recall center and they were very nice, told me to send in all the information to them for possible reimbursement. the recall is good for 10 years, and i believe it should be investigated further. this is 9 years later, but evidently the recall repair has failed.

Needing more info on just what does the gas cap do. so far i've had my engine light come on, and was told it was because the gas cap wasn't tightened. my latest discovery, i got in my vehicle, turned on the ignition, and the car eventually died, with no further turnover. i got out of the vehicle, thought of checking the gas cap, made a few turns, and got back into my vehicle, and, it turned over without difficulty. what other features does this item have that i should be aware of?

I own a 2004 dodge durango and let me tell you the problems i have had with it!! the radiator, throttle position sensor and brakes. the biggest problem is when it rains. the truck just shuts off, no matter where you are when this happens. you could be on the highway going 65mph and it just shuts down. i thank god that i haven't gotten in to an accident yet. it is so dangerous to drive it like that not knowing if when you re out and its starts to rain i head for home because i am so worried. i don't even let me teenage daughter borrow it in cause she is out and god forbid it starts to rain. when it shuts down there are no brakes no nothing. someone has to do something about this. there are so many complaints and no recalls on this part. that is insane!!!! someone somewhere is going to get killed!!! dodge - you have to do something!!!!! i will never buy another dodge again!!!

I have a 2004 dodge durango hemi 5.7 with 62k miles. i maintained the car well. i have two major problems: 1) while driving on the highway the checking engine light and the lighting rod light comes on and the car jumps out of overdrive and remains in 3rd or 4th gear. my temporary fix would be to pull over, turn off the car wait 3 seconds then restart. the check engine light stays on but the lighting bolt goes off and the car is able to shift back into high gear. 2) recently the while driving the oil light comes and the car stalls leading me to stare the car off the road without any power. this is extremely dangerous!! i have no fix to date.

2004 dodge durango slt 5.7 litre. 85k mikles after driving on highway for at least 2-3 hours, check engine and electronic throtlle control warning lights come one. happens everytime on the highway after 2-3 hours. turn off car, wait 2 minutes, and it starts up and only check engine light stays on until it recycles. now, the oil light comes on and the car shuts off in the middle of the road. after waiting 2 or 3 minutes and starting, ti is fine. mechanic says dodge needs to replace ecm / ecu. i see a lot of issue with this car stalling in the middle of the road. this is a dangerous issue that chrysler needs to be held accountable for.

While driving my 2004 dodge durango the speedometer functioned irradically and the interior lights would not go out. i pulled off to the side of the road, turned vehicle off, restarted and no change. continued driving home when smoke started coming out from under the dashboard on driver's side only, and the vents on driver's side. immediately turned vehicle off in the middle of the road-ran to a home. he grabbed fire exstinguisher-no flames under the hood - he disconnected battery. towed to garage, informed dodge had recall for dashboard fires, towed to dealer who told me defect was in the cluster, that was not part of the recall and no wires in the cluster were melted together, therefore it was not a fire. i called dodge headquarters, received a call on this date from stacey stating they had investigated which was to call the dealership and have it reviewed by their legal team and this did not fall under the recall

Purchased new 2004 durango limited 5.7 hemi: after 3 1/2 years and the warranty expiration, when driving in city traffic or highway and it starts raining the engine starts to hesitate violently, to the point it will stop.this occurs if the suv is parked in the rain and the engine is started. i have to wait for a few minutes then the engine will start, but have another heart attack as i drive down the road.. i have had fuse panel, engine wiring, ecm checked and no one can find any problems? the engine recently started missing and my scanner showed p0308 : i removed the spark plug, checked the coil, wiring, injector, spark plug ..all ok and erased the code: the engine has about 79,000 miles on it and is properly maintained and garaged at night.. a stalling engine in inclimate weather is a very very dangerous thing that dodge/chryler seems to be ignoring..the fact is evident that there are hundreds of dodge customers with the same dangerous problem i feel we should not be partners to dodge/chrysler's defective dangerous vehicles and intervention by our federal government based on the number of complaints should be implimented immediatly

Incident occured on a hot, humid day while travelling down the interstate at 70 mph. without any previous warning, the a/c, blowing at full capacity, just stopped; there was no sound from the a/c motor nor was there a burning odor. approximately 10 minutes later, i turned the a/c back on to find it was blowing extremely cold air on the low setting. i made several stops and everytime the a/c would work; however, the last stop and start i made the a/c did not work. the small town of natchitoches, la does not have a dodge dealership anymore; therefore, i took my vehicle to an independent reputable auto shop in this small town. the mechanic and owner of the shop said that he has replaced about 3 or 4 melted blower motor resistors. is this a common problem or is it a defect that needs to be addressed? it seems as though if something is melting that a fire could start and cause severe damage to the vehicle or worse, death to those in the vehicle.

2004 dodge durango 4x4 w/5.7 hemi engine. catastrophic engine failure: all service performed as per manufacturers specifications at an authorized dodge dealer. turned the ignition to start the truck and heard a loud noise. afterward, the ignition would not turn over and the vehicle made a ticking sound. had the truck towed to the dealer thinking it may be a failed battery. after replacing the battery (the service technician also suspected a battery) the car failed to hold a charge. upon further inspection on the rack the mechanic identified a significant hole in the engine block and a significant crack in the transmission to engine interface. the mechanic deduced that as an engine component blew, the force of which shorted the battery, the starter and cracked the transmission interface. after removing the battery, the terminal to the negative ground was dislodged, the battery was bulging at the sides, and the engine is dead. chrysler motor company says they have no prior knowledge of any problems with hemi engines, and given the car is out of warranty..sorry nothing they can do. this is a problem that exists and is documented on nhtsa and other public forums. the option presented by chrysler is $5500 plus labor for a re-manufactured engine. estimated labor is $1900. the dealer doesn't get much of a break from chrysler for this engine, but gets all the hassle for the shoddy work the company sells. this is a heavy duty truck, an engine should not die at 125,000 miles.

I own a 2004 dodge durango that has a safety recall on it in 2007-2008 for a potential fire in the cluster panel. i experienced a problem with the interior lights and hatch light not going and brought it to a dodge dealer to have it looked at. the service mgr told me that it was the cluster panel (which was the recall on this vehicle) that had to be done again. now chrysler no longer has the part and due the potential fire hazard the vehicle can not be driven (all stated in the earlier g07 safety recall. i have put 10 phone calls into the dodge cust service line and have heard no response from them. please let me know if you can be of any help or perhaps direct me to someone who can. i have 2 small children and this is my only means of transportation. thank you *tr

My 2004 dodge durango (5.7 l) shut off while my husband was driving it. we were making a left hand turn into a parking lot and the truck shut off. he barely missed hitting another car because the steering and the brakes went out. it took 4 tries to get the truck started back up. this has happened to me 2 others times when i was sitting at a red light, thankfully i was not driving. the truck also stalls out everytime there is a heavy rain. the check engine light has not come on so every dealership i've spoken to says that there is nothing that can be done about it, but they are aware there is a problem. i use this truck to drive my children everywhere and i do not understand how this problem has not been addressed. *tr

2004 dodge durango limited hemi engine. for no reason driving down road the suv will stop running at any speed, you lose all power steering and brakes, and are just coasting. happened 4 times in 3 months, no one at dodge knows why even though every site on the internet, shows this to be a problem on all the 2004's with no answers from dodge. then after 4th time went to restart engine and engine blew, a connecting rod snapped in half, which is obviously a forgery/metaligy issue. everyone one who has looked at this says so and is a common problem in all the 2004's. this was a $49,000 suv, and this is terrible, dodge just says $9,000. no comment. i'm sure people have died from the first issue, loss of power, without steering or brakes, but does the engine freezing like that, instantly, cause the weak connecting rod to snap. if someone there is doing there job, this should be recalled asap. i'm sure people are dieing over this and dodge does not care, will not fix,and will not even comment on. i have been trying since july. please help is there any way to see the other complaints that have been filed about this. i have talked to 14 other people with the same hemi engine, same year with the same exact problem, but had to find them myself searching the internet. it's an obvious problem, that's been proven, repeatedly, what can we do to change fix/this. thank you, tom *tr

Car sometimes starts without electrical response: turn the ignition on and engine starts but no electricity. driving on interstate 95 and all electricity to all panels and power steering shuts off. this happens often and results in having to coast to stop on the side of the interstate with little control of the vehicle. i have to restart engine several times before electrical response is restored. a tumbler kit was installed under warranty (service at pritchard dodge in ithaca, ny in april of 2005) to reset electrical circuit and it helped but never fixed the problem, but now problem is back and getting worse. i do not have the luxury to buy another car so i have used it, but now is too dangerous. *tr

I received a recall notice in nov/dec 2007 from dodge regarding a recall on my 2004 dodge durango. i immediately made an appointment upon receiving the notice and had it repaired on jan.2, 2008. the recall was for a wiring cluster behind the instrument panel , it would malfunction resulting in a fire. recently while on a camping trip with my children, brother and sister in law and my sister and her family the car caught fire. it had been parked since approximately 5:00 the day before. we woke up on sunday morning and were standing around the campfire and all of a sudden the horn on my car beeped. i immediately checked to make sure all the kids were accounted for and they were. my 12 year old son ran down and yelled back the car was on fire. i looked down and saw flames shooting form the windshield and the top of the car. none of us had a fire extinguisher but someone yelled grab the coolers because it had bottled water in there. we quickly doused the fire with water and extinguished it. the fire dept. came out and said they believed the fire started behind the instrument panel in the dash. i filed a report with my insurance and the adjuster looked at the car and totaled and concurred with what the fire dept. had said. i filed a claim with chrysler and their response to me was that your car is out of warranty,we're sorry but we can't help you. i am highly upset about this. if i had been driving this car when the problem occurred not only would i have not made it out but my four children(two of whom are in car seats) would have met certain death. i need your help investigating this. my car is at a salvage lot in greensboro, nc and this needs to be investigated. chrysler didn't even take the time to look at it. their response is not right and i should not be penalized for their negligence. i really need your help here. thanks so much! *tr

I bought my 2004 dodge durango in 2005 january with 666 miles on the truck. the first year i had no problems at all until about march 2006 i was driving from washington state to california when i notice the check engine light came on. i took it to the dealership and had it cut off in california. well, on my way back to washington state after a week i notice the check engine light came back on i took it back to the dealership for repair. the dealership cut off the light and told me there was a recall out on the 2004 dodge durango to fix the instrument panel. so i took the 2004 dodge durango back in to fix the recall problem and they said it was fixed. well, in the summer of 2006 i was driving my 2004 dodge durango when the lights starts to go off and on while i was on the highway. it was raining hard and then my check engine light comes on again, so i just left the light on. now i'm driving around in my 2004 dodge durango in the rain when i go to put gas in it when i stop. all of a sudden all my interior lights starts to go on and off with my headlights going off and on. the windshield wipers did not work so i cut the vehicle off for a minute. when i turn on the vehicle i could not move it out of park and all the lights was on. so, i left the vehicle there in a parking spot and walk back to work. i later came back to the vehicle about 2 hours later and i started up the vehicle and the gear shift worked. so i drove back to my office and use the computer to see if anyone else was having these types of problems and what do you know i'm not the only one. i took it to the dealership like i was told by headquarters and they gave me some paperwork to go to me local dodge dealership. the dealership made me pay for a diagnostic on my vehicle and said it was from water intrusion in the junction block and my warrant does not cover it. headquarters told me to open a blog and try to get a recall started. but in the mean time call your insurance company. lives are at stake. *tr

I purchased a 04 dodge durango 1-1/2 months ago. i was only given 1 key. they keyless entry and key are one. the keyless entry does not lock or unlock the vehicle. the prong that holds the battery down breaks off easily. if you try to manually unlock the vehicle it sets off the alarm.i am unable to lock my vehicle unless i set the alarm off. i have changed the battery, still doesn't help. i looked up on the internet and found this happens with this vehicle often because it is poorly made. i was told i had to pay $200 to replace the key and it will most likely happen again. there should be a recall on this item as it happens often and i am unable to lock my vehicle which makes it more likely for my vehicle to be broken into. the warranty does not cover this item, however i read on other cases that eventually this issue leads to the security system locking down and the vehicle not working. my issue has yet to get to that point but i don't want to wait for that to happen. please look into this issue as dodge refuses to be cooperative. *tr

I have found that my electrical system, specifically the alarm at the moment, fails periodically. the car has shut down while running before. took to dealership and was told that they could not duplicate. now the alarm is malfunctioning in that it goes off by itself the key won't shut it off, and turning the engine doesn't stop it either. further, the car is manufactured with a kill switch in the oem alarm. i have read many complaints similar to this on this vehicle with no satisfaction or acknowledgement from the manufacturer. i am the sole owner of this vehicle. the fact that the alarm/electrical system is oem and that the alarm can disable the engine poses a problem. the car recently fell out of warranty, admittedly, but the fact remains that there appears to be a letent defect in the alarm/electrical system that can be and is very dangerous. the first time the car shut off while driving my wife had our two small children aboard. luckily, she was on a surface street vice a highway at speed. the dealerships avows no knowledge of there being technical service bulletins (tsb) or the safety hazard this poses. the oem alarm problem hasn't caused any moving safety issues for me as i can tell, but since the car has shut off while in operation previously, i am drawing a novice conclusion that the two problems could be related. the alarm problem now is occuring daily several times a day. initially, the dealership insisted i buy a new reprogrammed key at over $200 to fix the problems. i believe that manufacturer tsb is 0802404. it is only a matter of time until someone is seriously injured or killed as a result of the shut off and possible alarm problems. check www.carcomplaints.com or www.dodgetalk.com to verify what i am saying as being a latent defect. *tr

Last year i received a recall notice for my 2004 dodge durango concerning an electrical component. i took the vehicle to berryville dodge in berryville,ar to have it fixed. they did the recall and when i picked up the car the driver door lock would not work along with the radio/cd/dvd/sat radio component. i complained they said to call chrysler. i called chrysler and they denied responsibility. they said it was coincidence! i went to 2 other dodge dealers and both said the same thing had happened at their dealership but they fixed the radio and door locks. the berryville dealer refused and chrysler refused to repair unless i paid for it.($80 for the lock, $600 for the radio). is there anything i can do about it? calling chrysler is a waste and the dealer wont do anything either. *tr

Electrical system - engine management software update - since update, several functions are not operating as they did when the vehicle was new. prior to the upgrade interior lights dimmed before shutting off, they no longer do, after the upgrade, the driver memory system that remembered seat and mirror positions, heat/ac settings and radio settings now functions differently .. also, not sure if this is related but the drivers door, when closed would not turn the interior lights off. the frustration is that there is no longer a mechanical switch to accomplish this so it appears that this process is software controlled. also within the past two weeks, the engine overheated for no apparent reason. to date, the problem has not recurred. *tr

When i got into my truck to take my husband to work the radio did not have any sound, but the power was on. as soon as this happened i knew it was going to be a repeat of what happened last month, and it was! soon after the airbag light came on and many other lights on the panel. the gauges started jumping up and down. after i heard of the recall we took the truck to the dealer, they told us this was fixed, obviously it was not. i agree with complaint# 10060005, i feel water is possibly getting into places it should not be, the dealer had already resealed the top of my truck because my driver's side door was leaking and water was dripping from my headliner!, not long ago after it rained water was coming in near the windshield on the passenger side, we called the dealer again, and they told us they fixed the problem the first time! (i have pictures of the water dripping in my truck!) i also have video of the control panel as i was driving, with the gauges jumping and lights coming on and off! i would love for dodge to see the video, and explain how this is happening. this truck is unsafe. i am driving my mother's toyota right now!! *ak

2004 5.7l hemi , 46000 miles, first stalled when driving 35 mph on march 12, pulled over and was able to restart. since then engine light comes on intermittently, car has now stalled multiple times at different speeds and driving conditions. also sudden rpm drop off at low idle. one thing is consistent, stalls leave no power steering or brakes, this is scary and dangerous !!! no accidents...yet going to call tomorrow to see if can get into dealership and have tsb applied. *jb

I was driving down the highway for about 3 minutes and i noticed the interior lighting was on. at this time my instrument panel started smoking. once this happened the gauges started acting crazy and the windshield wipers came on. the switch was not on and there were no lights in the dash. by the time i got to the side of the road the dash had black smoke coming from it. within 5 minutes the vehicle was completely engulfed with flames. by the time the fire and rescue got there the traffic on the highway had slowed considerably and the smoke was so bad you couldn't even see the highway. the vehicle was a total loss. there are a number of things that could have happened. thankfully no one was injured and my children were not in the vehicle. *jb

On several instances beginning approximately november of 2006 the interior lights would either stay on, or not come on at all. sometimes, upon entering the car, we would have to wait twenty minutes or more to get the lights to go out. a few instances, the lights would never go out and ran the battery down. eventually, no lights at all would come on and at one point you could smell something burning, but never see it. when approaching the jeff wyler dodge, and having our car serviced today (on 3-14-07), they had us pay for a diagnostics and stated that the instrumental cluster (sp?) needed to be replaced and the cost was close to $500.00. due to the price of the part, we decided not to have them replace it right away. tonight, while reading the news, i came upon an article on wlwt.com and found that if you are having an interior light problem (lights not dimming the way they are supposed to), to take your car to the dealer. i am very upset that somehow the recall is in the news, however a dodge dealership mentions nothing to us about it? i will be contacting the dealer again in the morning to discuss. *jb

I have had a 2004 5.7 limited dodge durango 2004 version and have consistent electrical problems. the first time the truck did not start when i was out of state. i needed to get towed to a dodge dealer and it took almost 3 weeks to fix. they stated that the electric system shorted out and replaced some system within the car. after getting the car back i had consistent problems with the air conditioning system, interior lights, radio system etc. they would work sometimes and not work most of the time. i took the truck to the dealer (bridge chrysler in new york) several times and they said there was no problem. after calling the main complaint line several times they asked me to bring it to another dealer in brooklyn.(bay ridge) the service manager dan worked with the service department for another 2 weeks to finally identify that the original time the truck died and was fixed they replaced the wrong part. the service department in brooklyn fixed the truck and i do not have major problems most of the time now but i was without the truck for over 6 weeks over the duration of the lease so far. there continues to be electrical problems with my truck but i do not have the time to leave the truck for another 3 weeks. *jb

On march 1st, 2007 we noticed that all the interior lights in our 2004 durango would not turn off. contacted the dealership and they couldn't take the vehicle until the 2nd. disconnected the battery, and re-connected it to take it to the dealership on the 2nd. the dealership had the vehicle until the 6th. my wife went to the dealership on march 6, 2007 to find out if they knew what was wrong, because they wouldn't answer their phones. when she got there she learned that there had been a fire in the service department over night. it was expected that our vehicle had caused the fire. i was completely surprised when i heard the news, but know that i have seen all the reports about similar incidents it doesn't surprise me at all. i am just glad this happened at the dealership, and not at my home. or even worse with my wife and kids in the vehicle. dodge needs to wake up and realize that there is a serious problem and notify people before someone gets seriously hurt or killed. *jb

We bought our durango in april 2006. it is a 2004 and just reached 40,000 miles. today when we drove it the dome lights came on like always when we got in the car, but then they never turned off. we thought maybe our switch or something was bad. we got home and parked it, then about 20 minutes later, we went to get into it and ....it was filled with smoke. the whole front of our car is burned...the dash, the windshield, the seats, the ceiling is all burned and hanging down with the wires all melted and burned. we are so lucky this didn't happen to us when we were in it, or that it didn't reach the gas tank and explode. we think probably the lack of oxygen inside of the car killed the fire before the whole car was burnt to the ground. anyway, i have no idea what to do. i am calling our insurance in the morning, but i can't help but think after researching the internet tonight and reading so many of these exact same reports that this is a dodge issue. i would be grateful to hear back from you . thanks. *nm

2004 dodge durango. initially interior dome lights would not automatically dim and turn off upon entering the car. lights would turn off by manually pushing button twice- once to dim/ needed to wait a period of time/ then again to turn off. this began 5 days ago. after back hatch was opened and closed, back hatch light stayed on continuously, this began 3 days ago. bottom of instrument panel/ heater area failed to illuminate on occasion. this began about 3 days ago. drove yesterday, driving fine other than these electrical issues. about 1 hour after driving car, horrible smell occured in interior- smelled like a cross between something burning/ melting and paint fumes. upon starting the car the windshield wipers started on high speed and the tow light was flashing- could not turn off wipers. more of instrument panel lights were out, electrical system seemed crazy. immediately turned off car, afraid of a fire. i've found other similar reports of 2004 dodge durangos and have had auto towed to dealer. initally they need to replace the circuit board as it is fried and then look at the tcm. this car is only 2 years old . *nm

Bought 2004 3.7l dodge durango jan 2004 .within year, check engine light came on. took it to arrigo dodge, wpbch, florida. left it for a few days, called to say it was ready. reason for failure - bad sensor. drove home, light back on.took it to arrigo. they kept it for a week. they explained that the harness (electrical) had a short, so they replaced it.got it back with the light on. they took it back into the shop for about 5 minutes then the service advisor took it back to say they just turned off the warning light. within a month my mechanic told me that there is a vibration in the motor. by the begining of 2006, the vibration got worse. eventually the vehicle broke down. by this time, my 75000 mile powertrane warranty had run out. my mechanic told me that there was sludge stuck in the oil pump screen and as such the oil was not circulating like it should.the night before i was supposed to take it to the dealership for diagnosis, i parked it in my neighbors driveway. woke up early, went to the truck opened the driverside door and immediately smelled / saw smoke coming from under instrument panel. all the warning and ignition lights were on and speedometer was cycling between zero and 10 mph. . i disconnected the battery, which stopped the burning. took it to dealership where they discovered that the module in the instrument cluster was burnt, and for the original problem , they found that the motor was ruined. as a result of all this i had to pay $800+ to fix the instrument cluster problem and my mechanic found a motor to replace mine at an additional $2500. i'm convinced the warning light was indication that something was wrong with the engine and had they not turned off the warning light, i would have paid enough attention to the vehicle to not wind up with a ruined engine. dealer told me that there was recall for a capacitor in the instrument cluster but the recall was done on my vehicle before i bought it. thus i had to pay for the repair out of pocket. *nm

Turned key in ignition and the dashboard lit up. there were even lights on the dashboard that i did not recognize. nothing worked: no ac, no gas gauge, no electric windows, no headlights (or any other lights), no speedometer, no windshield wipers. dropped durango off for service 2 days later, it sat in our driveway undriveable for those two days. chrysler reset a computer switch and informed us that the fix was temporary to get us through the weekend, for a monday appointment for service. dropped off the durango on 7/24/05 and today, 8/8/05 it is still in the shop. they had to remove a part of the computer and send it off to the manufacturer to be repaired/reset. we were told a week ago that the manufacturer doesn't have the part needed for the repair, because this has never happened before, and that it would be another week before the durango is fixed. at that time, we requested a loaner vehicle and was approved by chrysler for a loaner for a 10 day period. today is day number 7, and chrysler is predicting that the part may be delivered to them in the next few days, so maybe we'll have the vehicle prior to the weekend. at this the vehicle has been undriveable for 15 days....i'm looking into the va lemon law, and if the problem persists, may pursue that. if anyone else has had this problem we'd like to know about it. *nm

My 2004 dodge durango (vin 1d8hb58d84f166952) has had an intermittent electrical distribution failure. first incident occured 4 months after purchase. it is now 14 months since purchase, the vehicle has been in for repairs 7 times, and the cause of casualty remains undetermined. this is largely in part due to daimler chrysler's inattention to maintenance procedures. they attempt to repair the symptom rather than the cause. the electrical distribution shortcoming intermittently impacts the a/c, radio, console lights, and tody... the airbags. pending the turn of the ignition key determines which system is impacted. one only needs to turn off the car and restart it to move the gremlin to a different system. also, the mechanic at greenbrier dodge claimed this to be a new electrical system that operates off of buses. more importantly, he claimed that daimler chrysler has seen occurances similar to that of my own before. this is a fire hazard waiting to happen. or, if in a crash, will my air bag work? could i be driving down the highway and my console lights go out, hiding the status of my engine (i.e., oil low, etc)?

On 6/28/2004, my ac stopped blowing cold air, the airbag light came on and stayed on, and my gear shift would not go into park. i took it to the dealership and they fixed the gear shift. the ac not working is a result of an apparent computer problem that requires a software update. the software update did not fix the problem. i have taken my durango in for service 4+ times and the ac is still not fixed. it blows hot air at random. you cannot drive with the windows down because of the load noise. it hurts your ears and you have to immediately roll them up, same thing with the moon roof. the airbag light was repaired by replacing a module. the informed me that the computer was not communitcating with the airbag, resulting in the airbag light to come on. does this mean that the airbag will not deploy on impact if the computer is not recognizing that it has an airbag.*ak

My 2004 dodge durango has 55,000 miles on it. both keyless entry fobs quit working. the only way to unlock my truck is manually, via turning the key in the door. every time you do that, the alarm goes off. i researched this online, to find out that a lot of people have the same problem, even cars still under factory warranty. (those under warranty, said dodge wouldn't fix them). this is completely unacceptable. there's no reason dodge can't have a recall and fix this key issue. i just got off the phone with dodge customer relations and got nowhere. no help, no information on how to fix it, and certainly no recall. *tr

Following the throttle casing recall on my dodge durango 2004 slt 4.7 l a few days after i purchased the vehicle, my engine light came on...no prob per the dealer. following week i noticed that gas mileage was below 10mpg's which was abnormal but dealer stated that it would get better. a few days later while accelerating on interstate 80 the engine started bucking and chugging and the engine light came on and started blinking..... i pulled to the shoulder and turned off vehicle. i got the vehicle to the dealer and they found from the computer that the cylinders were misfiring. they pulled the plugs out of the block and noted rust and corrosion along with oxidation covering the sparkplugs and the extension tubes holding the spark plugs. they found that water was getting into the firing area of the sparkplug . however, it was said to me by the warranty manager from the northeast business center for chrysler that he had my photos sent to detroit and that engineers were now designing a deflector shield for these durangos which would somehow keep water from getting to places it should not be. as a certified safety professional, #9937, i investigate fatalities and injuries regularly. it is my job to try to arrive at the root cause of accidents and incidents. in this case, a service manager from corigliano dodge, believe other vehicles may have this problem and that it could be related...that is the water not being kept way from the innerds of the engine...could be related to the throttle cable getting water in it and when subject to freezing temps, it could stick causing an accident. water in an engine here got the throttle to stick when mixed with cold temperatures. it got my engine cylinders to misfire and what about steering or electrical fires. chrysler must have some oversight from your agency on this and please contact me so i can email digital photos to you that i took that day in the corigliano dodge of boonton , nj shop. *ak

On march 2, 2007 i got in my 2004 dodge durango limited (hemi) to take my kids to school, i noticed my radio had no sound, the power came on, but no sound at all was heard. after i drove about 1/2 of a mile the speedometer and tachometer gauges started acting erratic, jumping up and down, the radio came back on for a few seconds, then cut out again. the overhead temp control was jumping from 54 degrees to negative 40!. my airbag light came on and stayed on as well as the etc light. after dropping my kids at school, i have not drove this truck, with less than 41000 miles. after reading that fires have started in many other 2004 durango's, i would like to know why my truck has not been issued a recall, what are they waiting for? i can not put my kids in this truck. in october 2006 my truck was leaking from above my drivers side door (34713 miles), we took it to the dealer and they had to re-seal seams above my door as well as other possible areas water could be getting in, one week later my truck started stalling at stop signs, my husband took it do the dealer again (35050 miles) the dealer schaefer and strohminger dodge whitemarsh of course tells us that it is lack of maintenance (not true) and we need the throttle body cleaned ($169.00 and a tune up $182.00) yet just the week before when my truck was there they did the multi-point inspection report and checked that everything was fine. after doing research i found out the issue with the leak above my door was sent out as a customer satisfaction notification no. d10, dated march 2004, why didn't i get this notification? better yet, why didn't the dealer fix this before i bought it in sept. 04? what good is the warranty from them when everything is denied? i will never buy a dodge/chrysler vehicle again. i have had many vehicles and never had an issue with a dealer not honoring a warranty and fixing problems, this is ridiculous and unsafe. *jb

My 2004 slt dodge durango was serviced for a routine oil change @42000 miles and the dealership did a routine point check evaluation. on feb. 10, 2007 @ 10:45 am while stopping at a traffic light, the vehicle began to lose speed before coming to a complete stop, the engine stopped responding & the panel lights started blinking on & off, then a burning smell started & smoke started to come out of the drivers panel and i exited the vehicle before physical harm could be done to me. i called 911 and they had the fire department to respond. my vehicle was completely engulfed with flames before they arrived. the entire interior of the vehicle was burned beyond recognition. it was extremely unnerving to be a part of this,i had not had any problems out of my vehicle before this horrible incident. it is just unthinkable to realize that i have been driving my two kids in my durango every day for the past 2 years and thanks to the lord above that they were at home on this morning, while i went to pick up the girl scout cookie orders for my daughter, which were in the back of the durango when it went up in smoke. this incident will financial impact my family greatly. the car is now a total loss. *jb

While traveling we returned to the hotel from dinner approx. 9:10 pm local time. at 11:15 pm we were contacted by the front desk informing us our vehicle was on fire. going out to the durango a police officer was extinguishing a fire inside the passenger compartment. the fire department arrived and finished putting out the fire. the fire chief and visual evidence clearly indicated the fire started in the area of the instrument cluster. the fire destroyed the panel and center console, broke out the windshield and set off the drivers side airbag, and melted the interior trim and headliner as far back as the rear seat. the vehicle is likely a total loss. this appears to be the issue covered by daimler chrysler recall c43 but no notice of the recall has ever been received. the vehicle was bought used from a dodge dealer in summer 2005 and has been in the dealer for service at least once. *jb

June 23, 2006 my daughter bailey chapman was participating in the 2006 7-11 soccer tournament at the saginaw township soccer complex located in saginaw township, michigan. the soccer complex is located off of mccarty road between bay road and mackinaw. her team was scheduled to play at 7:30pm. we were instructed to be at the complex forty five minutes prior to game time. we departed our home at 6:30pm for the 10 minute drive to the complex. we parked in an overflow tournament parking lot to the east of the complex. the lot was located off of mccarty road between cabaret trail w. and fortune blvd. we pulled off mccarty road and parked at approx. 6:45pm. as i turned the vehicle ignition off, my wife and i noticed smoke coming from underneath the dash board. it appeared that the smoke was coming from the instrument panel. at that point, my wife and i instructed the two older children to exit the vehicle immediately. my wife assisted our 4 year old out of her car seat. once everyone had cleared the vehicle, i opened the hood of the vehicle to check for smoke in the engine compartment. i saw no smoke in the engine compartment. although, i did see a small amount of smoke coming out of the vents located near the windshield wipers. i then proceeded to the passenger side of the vehicle. at this time the smoke went from a white/grey color to black. my first response was to order my family to move away from the vehicle. i then called 911 at 6:48pm to report a potential fire in the vehicle. shortly after the call to 911, a round flame shot through the dash (behind the driver instrument panel) to the windshield glass. at this point i instructed my family to get as far away from the vehicle as possible. i made a second call to 911 to report that the vehicle was now on fire. the vehicle was entirely burnt within 10-12 minutes. *nm
