| This investigation originated from complaints received by the agency reporting instrument panel (ip) fires on vehicles that were covered under a prior recall (recall 03v528) by daimler chrysler (dcc) to correct a cracked capacitor in the ip.dcc has now identified another condition that can cause overheating of an integrated circuit that controls interior lighting.this condition affects certain model year 2004-2006 dodge durango vehicles.dcc's march 6, 2007 letter to the agency states, under certain operating conditions, an integrated circuit located in the instrument cluster may overheat and result in an instrument panel fire.dcc will conduct a safety recall to inspect the cluster for damage and replace it if necessary.if the cluster shows no evidence of damage, it will be re-flashed [re-program the cluster] to prevent the potential for this condition.in addition, all vehicles will receive a wiring modification that directs the interior lighting to a portion of the integrated circuit with additional current carrying capacity.this recall covers 328,424 vehicles manufactured from 4/03/03 through 6/30/06.see nhtsa recall number 07v092 for details. | ||||||

| Was driving down the road then came to my neighborhood --- the road was clear but the turn light up ahead had just changed --- so i had time to make my turn into my neighborhood but when i attempted to turn the vehicle just shut off the -- there were two oncoming cars the one in lead began blowing but the car could not be steered or anything. luckily the cars had time to stop --- so, i quickly put the vehicle in park and attempted to restart the vehicle. thankfully it started and i was able to continue to pull into my neighborhood. my 10-year old daughter was in the front passenger side and began to scream when she heard the horns blowing --- this could have been tragic---what is the problem and why are these vehicles still able to be sold. i just purchased this vehicle on saturday. then while in my neighborhood i called a friend we test drove the vehicle -- the haul/tow light was on then off -- the right rear light was off the on the way back to be park it came on again-- the passenger air bag light was on then a few minutes later it was off. in addition the vehicle shut off again twice while turning the corner onto another street in the neighborhood. | |||

| On nov 11, i used my 2005 durango ltd, 5.7 hemi for errands. it is very lightly used. i parked it in my driveway and on nov 17 i went to load it for a trip. i found it filled with an acrid smoke. i air'd it out and began looking for the cause of the smell and smoke. the next morning we found that the main wiring block located in the drivers side kick panel had melted down, very many wires had melted and the cover had melted to the panel and carpet. i called dodge that day, they said they would have the case mgr call me by the next evening. but of course that was actually business days so monday evening they called me to verify my address? i asked if this was the case mgr and she said yes and was calling to verify my address. of course i told her we gave the address on friday and it is the same as when i bought the vehicle and on all of my records. she said she would have an inspector call me. he called on the 23rd and inspected it on saturday 11/26/2011. he took alot of pictures and said would file the report the next week but had no control when dodge would call me back or if dodge would do anything about it. this vehicle is in excellent condition, with low miles and a documented service history. when i first bought it was held at the first dealer i brought it to due to the check valve recall. it is in the gas tank and was malfunctioning and causing gas to fly back out when filling the tank. it has been doing it again lately for about the last month. the inspector said that a recall had been performed on the dash panel which had caused fires. i told him i had no knowledge of ever getting that work done, unless it was before i bought it or they did not tell me of the repair when it was done. he said good i had all of the windows shut or it may have ignited (and burned my house down with us in it). now i have a $35000 6 yr old, great looking boat anchor! *tr | |||

| The multi function switch in the steering column fails and causes the wrong turn indicator lights (both on the dash and on the exterior) to activate. for example, when pushing down on the stalk to indicate a left turn the right turn lights are activated. so, if you are in a left turn lane and you try to indicate that you are turning left the right indicator lights will activate and confuse the other drivers and could cause a very dangerous situation. | |||

| On 4 occasions my vehicle has shut off while trying to turn on a intersection at a low speed. all fluids are in the correct levels and no fault lights appear. the vehicle does start normally after a second. the incidents are sporadic however are concerning because it could cause an accident. this appears to be a common issue with this type of vehicle an many have complained. the dealer can't do anything because they cannot recreate the problem and computer does not show fault code. i tried contacting dodge customer service about it but they are not willing to help. | |||

| My 2005 dodge durango v8 hemi, several months back, started losing all power while driving including power steering and power brakes. i would have to try and coast to a stop without being involved in or causing an accident. the durango would then restart and run fine. this has been increasing in frequency over the past couple of months with it occuring twice yesterday, march 29,2010. this is becoming a serious safety hazard and will undoubtedly cause an accident. it has occured while turning, slowing down for traffic, and while accelerating through an interesction. i have called dodge on several occasions with no answer as to what the problem is or that they would fix it, as it is an obvious safety concern. there are many sites with other owners voicing this same thing happening to them and also list that this was brought to dodge's attention in the past and they didnt feel that it was important enough for them to issue a recall to get the problem fixed. i only hope it doesn't cost soimeone's life for them to admit that it is of concern to them | |||

| When putting gas into the tank of my vehicle, it spits gas back out. at the same time, we are getting surges in the speed of the engine, seems to be more frequently when speeding up from low rpm. the internet is full of instances of this same problem, but my dealer says no recall pertaining to this matter. they are replacing the gas tank at no charge, but say that i must pay for a diagnosis and a replacement sensor for the surging. they claim that neither problem is a recall, nor covered in my expensive extended warranty. i am being charged close to $300, including rental car. | |||

| The complaint i have is about the wireless remote key for the 2005 dodge durango. the remote stopped working after a short period of time. i notified the dealer and i was advised i needed to buy a new key. i opened the battery compartment and noticed one of the contacts from the battery to the actual circuit board had broken off. i fixed that problem by using adhesive buy now the key is not programmed. dealership wants to charge to solve that. i did a little research and found out i am not the only one with the problem. there is a lot of people that had the same issue. that is why i believe the wireless remote keys are defective and something must be done about it. thank you. if you have any questions feel free to contact me. *tr | |||

| I have a 2005 dodge durango limited w/ hemi. we purchased this vehicle used w/ 26,000 miles on it a year and 4 months ago. i have experienced several problems w/ it: broken remote keys-the remote locking devices on both keys are now dysfunctional due to the solder that holds the battery in place breaking. i cannot lock/unlock vehicle from outside and when it is locked from inside prior to exiting, upon re-entry, the alarm sounds until key is put into ignition and vehicle is started. the amount of money to replace these keys is outrageous!!!! windows shaking while rolled down-anytime any of the windows are rolled down they shake violently w/ in their casing. there is also quite a bit of wind noise heard when windows are rolled up completely. had dealership look at it but they could not determine there was a problem. navigation system-the main knob has become almost dysfunctional. it seems that it is sticking out farther than it once had. with out use of this knob, the entire nav system is virtually unusable. seatbelt cover-drivers side plastic dust cover where seatbelt goes into seat came off and the plastic around it has a crack in it. there is quite alot of dust building up inside the seatbelt mechanism. liftgate screws falling out-this has happened a dozen times regardless of how many times they are tightened. it is the screws that hold the plastic on the inside of the liftgate-where the closing handles are located. broken pin on accelerator pedal-dealer calling this a push nut pin and it is what attaches the accelerator to the arm. dealership certain it is a part malfunction however chrysler refusing to repair. underside steering wheel radio control-the left button that changes the pre-set radio stations as well as which disk is playing in the cd changer is sticking. if you just barely touch it the stations/cd's change continuously. in order to get it to stop, you must depress it very hard while moving it back and forth. *tr | |||

| My husband & i purchased a 2005 dodge durango with a hemi about a month ago. about 2 weeks ago (may 11, 2005), i put the durango in reverse (i was in a stop position), and the engine just died out. i put it in park and started the engine again. i drove to my mom's to pick her up. again i was in a stop position, put the durango in reverse, and the engine died out again. after i dropped off my mom, i immediately took the durango to the dealer. they kept it there and tested it for several hours. nothing happened. they could not verify my complaint. they did tell me, however, that the computer needed to be re-programed. this past saturday, my husband & i drove the durango to kona for the day. while driving up a ramp at one of the hotels, the engine died out again! first thing monday morning (5/23/2005), i called the dealer's service dept. and explained what had happened. (i spoke to sherri) they checked with their service manager, who along with the mechanic, called star. they told them to insall a co-pilot. they (the manager, service advisor and the mechanic, along with myself) do not think that makes any sense. the durango just dies out, and the co-pilot would only make sense if myself or my husband had the time to press the button before the truck died out. in this case, the truck just dies out, so we don't have the time to press the button first. i'm afraid that the truck will die out while driving and will cause an accident. | |||

| 2/27/07 purchases: 2/27/07 problem: engine light serviced: 3/06/07 repaired: egr valve, 3/09/07 problem: engine light serviced: 3/12/07 repaired: ignition coil. 4/06/07 problem: engine light/vehicle cut off/ serviced: 4/17/07 repaired: short out cam and crankshaft sensor. due to vehicle having rough idle , needle jumping/vehicle shaking, vehicle shut down at stop lights. (5/01/07) returned vehicle to service due to shutting down when backing up/rough idle. (5/17/07) vehicle shut down on the expressway in front of a semi-truck, i didn't know if had shut down until the wheel became difficult to control. i coasted up the exit ramp and the vehicle start right up. dealership requested to take the vehicle to another service center for repairs. (5/18/07) took vehicle a dodge dealership, in which ,they stated that the vehicle has intermittent problems which were hard to detect. diagnoses of the problem would be difficult. also, stated this was the second vehicle in their service department with the same problems. to no avail they found nothing.*ak | |||

| Dt: when coming to a stop vehicle died. once at a stop sign. vehicle died was when the gas applied. there were no dash lights when the vehicle diesd this was a 2005 vehicle. there had been 4 stalling problems. the vehicle idles in high and whines. the idle is not all the time. vehicle has been in the dealership for repairs 3 or 4 times. the climate was not a factor. the vehicle had contiually had ongoing problems. the dealership tried to fix the stalling problem. the computer has been reset , and an idle switch was added. right now consumer is waiting for the tools from chrysler to fix the recall part. the consumer called in advance for an appointment. dealer kept the vehicle all day, but they vdidn't have the correct tools.*ak | |||

| On july 8, 2005 at 6:30 am, i opened my car door to go to work and there had been afire inside the car during the night, causing extensive damage to the interior. had the car towed to my state farm approved repair center. after repairs were started, the cause of the fire was determined by the repair shop to be a wire under the seat that was for electric seats which is not an option in my car. dodge was notified and they said to stop repairs until they sent an inspector to look at car. he came the following week and determined dodge was not at fault and sealed the file and was told to retain a lawyer if i wanted to find out why, otherwise too bad. i found a recall on 2001 dodge rams that was for the same exact problem and 2 reported such fires in 2001 durangos. my case is not an isolated incident and dodge refuses to take care of the problem. the nhtsa id is 01v253000. obviously dodge did nothing to correct the problem and has not recalled the 2002 dodges. please help me. valerie davis. *nm | |||

| My wife was driving my daughter to pre-school, and she was crossing and turning at an intersection. suddenly, with no warning, the engine quit, leaving her with no brakes and no steering. luckily, she drifted to the curb, but if the traffic had been heavy, she and the baby could have been badly injured or killed. i experienced the exact same problem one day later. i immediately called my dealer, the dodge dealer in bellevue, washington, and told them about the problem. they told me to bring it in immediately, since they said there have been at least fifty similar problems with dodge hemi engines. they fixed it by flashing the chip in the computer. this is a very serious problem, and a recall needs to be announced as soon as possible. *nm | |||

| Tl*- please refer to nhtsa action number : ea05018 .the contact purchased a 2005 dodge durango on or about march 2005 with an odometer reading of 10 miles. the contact stated that on february 15, 2007 a fire began on the vehicle's dashboard. the vehicle was driven early in the morning, then parked for 2 hours. the contact went out a second time, and that waswhen the fire was noticed. the vehicle was towed to don weirs reno dodge on february 16, 2007. an investigator from dodge was ask to inspect the vehicle. the vehicle was stored at the dealer from february 16, 2007 to the present. the contact received a call from the investigator on february 20, 2007 regarding the fire. a representative from daimler chrysler called on february 26,2007 who said that it was not an aftermarket defect, but a manufacturing defect and would be covered under the warranty. the contact was faxed a letter from daimler chrysler, in which daimler chrysler agreed cover the cost of the repairs to the vehicle if the contact agreed to not to pursue this matter in court after repairs were done, and to exclude daimler chrysler of any additional liability. the contact filed a complaint against daimler chrysler because of this letter. the current and failure mileage were both 35,000.*ak | |||

| Dt: the airbag light continued to come on. the vehicle has been to the dealer numerous times. there have been no crashes. this was a brand new vehicle. repairs were done on the ignition switch and instrument cluster. this was thought to be related to the reason why the air bag light continued to come on. the air bags had not deployed. the light for the passenger's side airbag and the driver's side continued to illuminate intermittently. the vehicle is currently at the dealer for this problem. *ak updated 12/27/05. *jb | |||

| Dt: the vehicle caught on fire on august 3, 2005. the interior dome light was stuck, and that was the only indication there was a problem. the fire department came and put out the fire. , it originated from dashboard around steering column. the dealership was suppose to have specialist come out, but they have not looked at it yet. *ak | |||
