Defect SummaryOn certain pickup trucks, sport utility and passenger vehicles equipped with 42rle automatic transmissions, the cup plug that retains the park pawl anchor shaft may be improperly installed. if the shaft moves out of position, the vehicle may not be able to achieve 'park' position.
Consequence SummaryIf this occurs and the parking brake is not applied, the vehicle may roll away and cause a crash without warning.
Corrective SummaryDealers will inspect the transmissions and install a bracket to ensure the park pawl anchor shaft is retained in the proper position. the recall began on november 28, 2005. owners may contact daimlerchrysler at 1-800-853-1403.

PE05027CHRYSLER GROUP LLC05/16/200511/03/2005ENGINE STALL
On may 16, 2005,odi opened preliminary evaluation pe05-027 to investigate complaints of engine stalling in model year 2004-05 dodge durango suvs and ram 1500 series pickups equipped with the 5.7l v8 engine.information provided by daimlerchrysler during pe05-027 indicated that a large percentage of the complaints are related to an idle undershoot condition that may cause the engine to stall during turning maneuvers.in february 2005, daimlerchrysler revised the powertrain control module software in production vehicles and issued a technical service bulletin (tsb 18-013-05) releasing the new software as a service remedy for the idle undershoot condition.the bulletin was superceded by tsb 18-013-05a in april 2005.daimlerchrysler believes that the failure rate for stalling while driving due to the idle undershoot condition is low and that the bulletin has adequately addressed the problem. since pe05-027 was opened, odi has continued to receive complaints from owners of the subject vehicles who allege experiencing engine stall incidents under all types of driving conditions.in some instances the stalling has continued after the vehicle received the service bulletin repairs.this investigation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea05-018) to further assess the scope, frequency, and safety consequences of the alleged defect in dodge durango and ram 1500/2500/3500 series pickup trucks.
EA05018CHRYSLER GROUP LLC11/02/200508/29/2007ENGINE STALL
Analysis of the complaint, field report and warranty data shows that the majority of stalling incidents in the subject vehicles appear to be related to the engine calibration concerns that daimlerchrysler addressed with service bulletins releasing revised pcm software.analysis of the complaints and odi's survey of owners of vehicles that received engine management software updates under tsb #18-013-05 show that these stalling incidents have the following characteristics: - they occur at low speeds, often during parking lot ordriveway maneuvers; - they occur during decelerations, such as braking for a stop sign or traffic signal; and - the operator is almost always able to immediately restart the vehicle.when compared with other safety defect investigations and recalls of conditions that result in stalling during low-speed deceleration with immediate engine restart possible, the failure rate in the subject vehicles is low.analyses of complaint and warranty data also show a declining trend.accordingly, this investigation is closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist.the agency will continue to monitor complaints and other information relating to the alleged defect in the subject vehicles and take further action in the future if warranted.see document file for additional information regarding this resume.

The vehicle will automatically engage itself into 4-wheel drive mode. the incidents usually happen at low speeds. although, the incident can, has, and will happen at higher speeds. when it occurs at low speeds, the vehicle will accelerate slowly and refuse to turn. when the incident happens at higher speeds, the vehicle will seemingly lock the tires and if not handled correctly the driver can lose complete control of the suv. this particular defect seems to be a common issue among dodge durango 2nd generation owners. many say the dodge dealerships are skeptical on what exact repair is necessary to fix the apparent safety issue. durango owners experiences with technicians show many times they reportedly point the finger at various high dollar repairs. some have had success with replacing the transfer case motor but some who have pursued this repair have again reported the same issue after the repair was completed. originally, the safety concern was extremely rare. recently, the problem has become more consistent. it is a definite safety hazard as it can cause complete loss of control of the large vehicle. *tr

First incident happened at a low speed coming into a turn. i did some research online and found that most durango owners had luck with fuel system cleaning and/or egr valve replacements. i did both, and the vehicle ran fine up until today (2 months later). there were previous investigations for recall services a few years back, but they were closed out. i hope dodge decides to open an investigation again.. i do not want to be paying $200 every 2 months for fuel cleaning services. this is ridiculous. *tr

Car stalled unexpectedly on freeway exit for no apparent reason with loss of power steering and all functions. had to coast to a stop and luckily no other cars were behind us. additionally, car fuel tank valve does not stop gas when fueling and causes gas to surge out of tank when fueled and onto vehicle. reported this problem to dodge and they said this vin no. wasn't covered by recall.

2005 dodge durango stalls and power steering seems to go out when making a sharp right turn. the vehicle has done this 5-6 times over the last two weeks. there have been several close calls in getting rear-ended by a car behind us. the dodge dealer can't seem to find anything wrong!

My 2005 dodge durango spill gas whenever it near the end of filling creating a major fire hazard also now when ever i am coming to a stop of a slow down the vehicle stalls which kills the power steering and brakes. totally unsafe and when you call chrysler they say there is no problem. i am not going to pay for repairs that are clearly recall items. the web is littered with the same complaints and no one cares. *tr

Bought 2005 durango 12/05-needed several transmission services---dealer stated low transmission fluid causing engine light to come on (9/06), stalling 3/07, at least 5 times-low transmission fluid blamed, stalling 2/08--4 times in high traffic areas, again blamed low transmission fluid. differential leak in 3/07, now rear gear shot with a $900+ price tag and the warranty was only 3 years/36,000. (news to me--in 2005 they were advertising 7 years-70,000 on drive train). *tr

Similar to other reports given to nhtsa, my 2005 dodge durango stalls at slow speeds while turning the vehicle. to date, no damage has occurred. the occurrence is intermittent, as it has happened approximately 4 times within the past 8 months. dodge service reps are unable to repeat the problem and offer no solution.

We purchased a 2005 dodge durango used march 11, 2006 with 16,568, miles on it. on march 13th two days after we purchased it and 16,614 miles later (48 miles later) the truck broke down on the highway! we had the truck towed in to earnhardts dodge, find out the ring gear and pinion set needs replaced, differential side bearings - all axles replace (includes case and side gears if necessary) this is quoted from all my receipts. 2nd time around (july 18,2006) - now has 24,795 miles on it, rear end issues again! again this is the repairs - seal, axle shaft oil - replace all other axles-right. brake pads, disc brake-both sides rear replace due right rear axle seal leaking contaminated pads, rotor has fluid burned into the surface. replaced right axle seal and brakes. also had to replace watts link sway bar, replaced bell crank and links. replaced both rear stabilizer bars again. 3rd time (january 10,2007) - now at 38,051 miles replace seal, axle shaft oil, replace all other axles - replace seal, drive pinion oil replace all others. 4th time, (january 29,2007) now at 39,329 again, replaced bell crank, watts link. 5th time (july 16,2007) - 52,058 failed bearing in rear diff, need to replace ring & pinion and all bearings- cost - $1,474, (why would i want to pay this much when they haven't been able to fix this problem?) told them to put the truck back together, we can't afford to fix it. 6th time - now after researching this vehilce, we found out, earnhardts dodge/hyundai in gilbert arizona (same placed we purchased it at) january 17,2006) (now 6 repairs) noticed the durango had rear differtial leaks, they replaced seal, drive pinion oil and all three parts - then returned the vehicle to stock when it was finished at 16,614 miles! just 48 miles before we purchased the vehicle!! *tr

I have an 05 hemi durango limited with 3,300 miles on it. since new the vehicle has occassionally died when making low speed turns. the dealer has informed me that the pcm flash provided by dodge has not corrected the problem and they are still working on a fix. overall the vehicle has stalled five times. i have also filed a similar complaint for my 05 ram 2500 with the hemi engine.

I purchased my 2005 dodge durango, 5.7l hemi, used from a dealership. a check engine light came on and i took it in for service and they flushed my transmission fluid and said that if it did it again they would try replacing the selenoid in the transmission. after that, the engine would just shut off while driving - mostly when i was just starting out, but one time it just died (no warnings) when i was doing 70 mph down the highway! now my car is starting to buck (feels like you hit something) at @ 45 mph - not when accelerating, stepping on the gas or decelerating, but rather when staying at a steady rate of speed. i have young children, my husband works out of state, and i fear for our lives every time we drive this vehicle! it is my only form of transportation and i have a loan on it! i have read hundreds of complaints about these same type of symptoms. i want to know why dodge has not done anything about it! the federal government bailed them out before, now it's time they take responsibility and recall these cars and get them fixed before people start dieing! they are blatantly ignoring a known problem!

This has been an ongoing issue with our durango. the first time it happened was about one month after i bought it used with approx 60k miles on it. it is totally at random. i'm always able to pop it into neutral and start it back up again as if nothing ever happened. the biggest problem with this is not only that the engine totally shuts off(as if that isn't a huge issue initself), but that the power steering/power brakes go out as well making the possibility of an accident a huge issue. it has always had a stutter when driving. after taking it to the dealer, being told they couldn't replicate the problem or pull any codes. in order for them to find the problem i would have to pay them to locate their defect. at this point dodge needs to resolve this since i am not the only one experiencing this huge safety issue. i urge everyone to also submit this problem to the nhtsa.

2005 dodge durango stalls several times a week at low speeds, while braking, turning, parking. this has happened on curves, sending us into oncoming traffic since power steering goes out. this has happened in a school parking lot several times, creating a hazard. no particular date, as many incidents have occured. taken it in to dodge twice for service and they tell us that nothing is wrong. obviously they are wrong as this has been reported before. we want this fixed. we like the truck otherwise. it would be great if we felt completely safe in it, but this is hard to do when it stalls with no warning.
03/05/200832000
The vehicle stalls out at low speeds. so when you are at a stop light or slow down to turn or are in a parking lot, it stalls. when this happens, you can't steer because that only works with the car running. this started right after the 3 year warranty was over and has continued through today. they also didn't fix the recall item and i have fuel spills every time i set the nozzle on automatic and it is supposed to shut off. it does not shut off because the guage is defective. now i have a spot under the fuel fill that was eaten away by gas and it is now rusty.

Vehicle stalled out while slowing and turning into parking lot, vehicle stalled after backing down driveway stopping and starting to put into drive, vehicle stalled while pulling to a stop in a parking lot, check engine light has come on and went off several times by itself and the last time by having an advanced auto worker pull the code and clear it. the code states the problem is a transmission fluid pressure sensor. i just purchased this vehicle and of course it is just over 80,000 miles on it now. the vehicle is a 2005 dodge durango. i called a friend who is a mechanic to see if he could fix the problem due to not having the money to take it to a dealership. the friend has told me that dodge has had a lot of these types of problems with the durango. my vehicle has yet to be repaired. *tr

Engine stalls randomly and in different driving conditions but mostly when coming to a stop rpm will drop off all the sudden then engine dies it also looses power when accelerating and surges pretty hard when this happens this has happened twice since i bought the vehicle on 2/25/09 first time was on 3/11/09 and the second time was 3/21/09. *tr

Engine just turns off with no warning. stalls first time this happened i had just passed a vehicle on the highway. if felt like i had run out of gas though i knew i had plenty. i coasted to the side and was able to immediately restart and ran fine. next occurrence was driving slowly through a wildlife zoo, stopped to back up and vehicle shut off. third: had just stopped for stop sign, shut off as i accelerated to cross intersection. fourth: taking my children to school! turned at a busy intersection and engine quit, thankfully was able to coast through and pull to side of road. fifth: happened today while in stop and go traffic picking kids up at school. i worry this could happen on busy interstate or in a dangerous area where i am not able to quickly get the car of the road to restart. very frustrating and scary!! *tr

2 different problems with 2005 dodge durango transmission. first problem. car slips into reverse from drive if the car is bumped slightly by opening door or is on a hill. i was pinned between my car and a wall while trying to get out of the car while it was in park because it slipped into reverse after i got out of the car. 2nd problem, transmission coil rusted after 2 years and the car started sputtering like it was about to die. had to have it towed to dealer and paid $900.00 to have the coils and seals changed and the whole transmission tuned up for it to run. *tr

I purchased my durango in feb. 08 and the first incident was about one week later. i was taking my 3 children to school making a right hand turn into the parking lot when i suddenly could not hardly turn my steering wheel , i looked at the dash and realized that my engine had stalled. then i restarted the car and continued on my way. i called the car dealership to report it. the following week i took it the dealership to get the breaks worked on and mentioned the problem again and they said without an engine light on they would not be able to detect the problem. after my break work was completed i left the dealership to go home and on my way up a hill behind a semi truck going slow about 15 mph my durango stalled again and i was almost rear ended by a van. i turned around to head back to the dealership to have it looked at and they said the same thing about the dash light being on. so i preceded to go home. about a week or so later again making a right hand turn into a parking lot my durango stalled again. happened a couple more times over the next few weeks and i took it to the dealership again 180 miles round trip. i spent 6 hours waiting for them to fix it and they could not so they sent me on my way and about 3 miles down the road my engine light finally came on and my durango stalled again when i slowed down to return to the dealership to show them know the light is on. they hooked it up to the computer and fixed the problem and i returned home. i thought the problem had been solved but about 2 weeks later i had my three children in the durango and i was making a left hand turn off the highway on to a side street when it stalled as on coming traffic was coming at me and i almost got hit . i know do not let my children ride in this vehicle because it is not safe. again the dealership i bought it from does not know how to fix it and cannot help me. *tr

I have a 2005 dodge durango that has been in the shop 3 times for a rough idle and the dealership says they can't feel it, and don't know what it is, although it has died on me several times. also, i just found out i need a new rack and pinion and it isn't covered under warranty. it has 54,000 miles and i have a 70,000 powertrain warranty, but apparently, it isn't covered. *tr

As vehicle was put into drive to leave mostly empty new parking lot which was almost completed except landscaping by new major store chain, engine revved up and down on its own. about 5 to 10 seconds later, engine accelerated to full throttle on its own. pushing full down on brakes couldn't stop or even slow down vehicle. from start of incident, vehicle accelerated from 5 to about 30 mph before final impact. 2005 dodge durango struck/went over two 8 curbs of parking lot islands, went over pile of 75 20' pvc pipes and 15 pieces of 20' metal framing materials, hit and smashed through 2 pplates of 12x12x2 concrete paving blocks, causing 3 workers to dive out of path, and then finally smashed into l rear wheel of industrial size cherry picker smashing full front end, breaking l axle, bending frame of vehicle, and causing driver air bag to deploy, before it came to a complete stop. *ak

I purchased a 2005 dodge durango brand new,and since i had this vehicle it has been given me problems. there were recalls on this vehicle. the vehicle idled very hard, and it shut off when it idled hard, while sitting at a traffic light or when turning to go around a ramp. when shutting off the wheel locked, and i could not control the car. recently, the care shut off on the new jersey turnpike and a tractor trailer truck was behind me. luckily, i was in the outer lane and managed to steer the car to the shoulder before the truck could hit me and my family. this was very dangerous. last incident happened on une 10, 2007. every time i took the car to the dealer they determined there was no problem. *ak

Suv stalls with i make a turn or just slow down. i almost hit someone making a turn because the car stalled. my car has been in the shop about 3 times for this problem. they looked at it and the dodge people and could not fix it. then they gave me a computer that would collect data about the car when the problem happened. i drove with the computer in the car for about 2 weeks. they did not find any information that would help them fix the car. then they replaced the ignition switch. the problem did not happen for a long time. but it has happened about 3 times after they did that. *jb

I purchased my 2005 dodge durango last march and in june it started stalling while i was driving! it would happen while driving in town and i noticed it a lot when i made right turns. there was no warning...didn't make any sounds, no lights came on...i would just try to push the gas and there was nothing. it was all i could do to get it pulled off the road and avoid getting hit! this happened about 5 times within a two week period before i thought it was fixed. the first time it occurred i took it straight to the dealership and they could find nothing wrong. the computer did not pick up any errors and there was nothing they could do for me. then after it happened a few more times i took it straight there again and they found a software update. this seemed to have fixed it. so i thought until now. last week it started again...1 time while making a right turn. i came very close to getting hit and now i have a 3 month old baby riding in the car to worry about also. so, i thought great here we go again. i waited for it to happen once more before i took it back to the dealership and a few days later it happened again while making a right turn in town. again, they are saying there are no errors in the computer and they have no idea how to fix the problem or that it is even really happening! so in other words i am making this up! this time i was not taking my car back until i could be absolutely sure that it is safe to drive. it took me an hour of going round and round with them before they broke down and gave me a rental. they are going to have one of their mechanics test it for a few days and try to get it to happen while he is driving it. in the mean time, i am filing for the lemon law which could take up to four weeks and i know they are not going to let me keep a rental for that long! so i have no idea what i am going to do for now. hopefully it happens while the mechanic is driving it and they can come up with a solution. *jb

I have a 2005 dodge durango approximately 5000 miles. there have been several occasions (six incidents) where i was driving the vehicle and i had problems accelarating, the accelarator was reving up and i could not go faster than 20 mph. i felt as though the transmission would not shift, the rpm gauge would not go past 1. on another occasion, i was going on the freeway 65mph, and the incident occured again, this time my car slowed down to 40mph and i could not pickup speed, i panicked because i was on the freeway with my kids and i was afraid someone was going to hit me from behind. i immediately exited the freeway and took the car to the dealership. the car was driven by a service tech and the same thing happened to him. when he put it on the computer nothing would happen. so i got my car back, on the 2nd day after the incident occured again. i went back to the dealership and again they said nothing was wrong. the service dept would not do anything because nothing showed up on the computer. we contacted daimler chrysler and the vehicle was at the dealer for the 3rd time. they said it might have been an electrical component or that the transmission needed to be tightened (whatever that means) they drove it for a week and they stated nothing happened while they were driving it. they said that the computer adjust to each driver differently and because i may be a slow accelarator (meaning i gently touch the gas pedal that maybe this was happening to me i stated that this incident had not only happened to me, but my husband as well. i got the vehicle thinking maybe it would be fine, but yesterday as i was driving my kids the incident occured again, and i could not accelarate past 20mph on a 45mph lane. the engine was reving up as though i had the car on neutral and it would not move. i don't know what to do anymore, please help.

On the new 2005 dodge durangos v6 there could be the possibilty of a roll back on a hill or incline the car does not want to take the gas when being accelerated and it fells as if it would roll backwards at any time i returned my new one and had to take a big loss on my purchase and then i got a v8 instead they did not even acknowleged the car as having a problem because they said it was to knew to make any adjustment yet and had to wait and see if the manufacturer makes a ajustment or a recall. i just want someone to make note of this problem in case some was to get hurt because of this problem with the durango i was afraid and scared when i went up a hill and it did not respond right when it was suppose to take the gas and it wouldnt and i was not even on big hill and i would hate to have to drive it around any mountain resorts it could be dangerous in my opion, but my dealership acted as if it had no problem and that was very upsetting to me they acted as if it was something i was doing wroung but i have never had any kind of problem or every experienced any problems like this before. so please make note of this i may help someone in the future because i talked to chrysler reps and they acted like it was no big deal and that was very wrong to be brushed off like i was now i know why people do get hurt because of people not wanting to deal with it because they dont want to admit there is a problem so i took a big loss in my purchase because i could not find any one to help me with this problem or fix it and i did not want to get hurt they would not help me . *ak

My 2005 dodge durango stalls while driving & the steering wheel will lock in position. the first time this happened (approx aug, 2006), i was turning into a shopping center & almost hit a car coming out of the shopping center b/c my truck stalled & the steering wheel locked & would not allow me to turn in any direction anymore! the second time this happened (just this week, april 2007), i had just backed out of a parking spot, put it in drive & started to go forward while turning (both times this happened i was turning to the right) ... i moved forward slightly & then it stalled out ... again, the steering wheel locked up. when the vehicle stalls, everything shuts off ... all electronics, everything ... and the steering wheel will lock in place. the local dealership wants me to pay $100! just to tell me what is wrong, if they can find anything on the trucks computer! i purchased the truck in feb, 2006 in pittsburgh, pa. i drove it down to key west & had a problem with an oil sensor during the trip. my biggest concern is the fact that when it stalls, everything turns off & the steering wheel locks up. i have to hope other drivers are as cautious as i am & that my brakes don't fail on me too! *tr

Bought 2005 dodge durango slt on 10/21/05. on 10/25/05 it idled down and cut off but no service light came on took to dealer and they said couldn't find anything. i have called or been to the dealer 46 times from 10/05 -11/06. no panel lights came on so they stated they couldn't fix it, but the durango will idle down and cut off in park or at low speeds. october 2006 dealer changed the cluster and problem stopped for a week. then started again either at idle or in park. 12/06 i took back due to it started to cut off while driving. but still no panel lights and nothing showing on computer. in january 2007 was driving and cut off in the middle of crossing traffic and another car had to swerve around took back to dealer. the dealer added 1 qt of transmission fluid and problem stopped for 3 days. then idle down and cutting off again. then did a transmission flush due to technical support recommendations. drove for 4 days and it cut off when turning and lost power had to slam brakes to miss a pole. next day driving down rd and cut off had to hit brakes to stay out of the ditch because i was on a curve. i have children and this is a safety issue. first incident date was 10/25/05-present(1/21/07) *jb

Unexpected and immediate engine stall at highway speed caused complete loss of power, including loss of power steering and power brakes. i was able to coast to the side of the road, place the truck in park, and restart. this was a very dangerous situation that could have produced grave consequences. took the truck to a dodge dealer would could find nothing wrong. warranty work six months prior included changing the fluid return filter on the transmission. this service work was a result of sluggish power to the transmission. truck has also died while driving in slow traffic. *nm

Engine surge causes vehicle to lurch. first instance was on march 10th 2006. the vehicle was running, i entered the vehicle put it into reverse and the tachometer jumped to almost 2000 rpms and vehicle lurched backwards then stopped. the second instance was on march 28th 2006 my wife was entering a parking space facing a store and reported stepping on the brake and the vehicle lurched forward jumping the concrete parking block with all 4 wheels, hitting the building then stopping. i believe this really is a problem as i now realize that during the first incident i needed to have the brake depressed to move the gear lever from park to reverse. maybe related to nhtsa odi id#s 10112496,10125643, 10141521, and 10152704. *jb
