 On march 9, 2006 odi upgraded preliminatry evaluation pe05-056 to engineerning analysis ea06-004 to investigate allegations of loose or missing steering shaft coupling bolts and steering column retaining bolts in model year (my) 2004 through 2006 dodge durango sport utility vehicles and my 2005 through 2006 dodge dakota pickup trucks.either condition could result in a loss of steering control.although odi identified some quality issues in the manufacturing processes for the dakota and durango vehicles, the data do not indicate that a safety defect trend is present in either population.the failure rates are low for each condition and trend analyses indicate that problems with the subject bolts were isolated to a few units affected by assembly error that were detected either pre-sale or occurred early in vehicle service.further use of agency resources in this matter does not appear to be warranted.the agency will continue to monitor complaints and other information relating to the alleged defect in the sugject vehicles and will take furhter action inthe the future if warranted.for more information see the attached closing report.

 The vehicle stalls while making turning maneuvers at low speeds which disables the power steering and brakes. this has occured on numerous occasions but the dealer is unable to duplicate the prolem and has not been able to correct this issue. this has always occur during decelerations, such as braking for a stop sign or traffic signal. when it happen i must immidiately put the vehicle in park and restart it, but luckily this has not let to an accident yet.

 Was driving down the road then came to my neighborhood --- the road was clear but the turn light up ahead had just changed --- so i had time to make my turn into my neighborhood but when i attempted to turn the vehicle just shut off the -- there were two oncoming cars the one in lead began blowing but the car could not be steered or anything. luckily the cars had time to stop --- so, i quickly put the vehicle in park and attempted to restart the vehicle. thankfully it started and i was able to continue to pull into my neighborhood. my 10-year old daughter was in the front passenger side and began to scream when she heard the horns blowing --- this could have been tragic---what is the problem and why are these vehicles still able to be sold. i just purchased this vehicle on saturday. then while in my neighborhood i called a friend we test drove the vehicle -- the haul/tow light was on then off -- the right rear light was off the on the way back to be park it came on again-- the passenger air bag light was on then a few minutes later it was off. in addition the vehicle shut off again twice while turning the corner onto another street in the neighborhood.

 Tl- the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that whenever it would rain or snow, water would enter the steering column and cause the steering wheel to seize sporadically. the contact was able to regain steering control after several minutes. in addition, the failure would cause the vehicle to stall without warning. the failure would also occur when the contact was driving in reverse however, the vehicle would independently restart. the vehicle was taken to several mechanics but none were able to diagnose the failure. the manufacture was not notified of the issue. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was unavailable. the failure mileage was 150,000. kmj

 The vehicle will automatically engage itself into 4-wheel drive mode. the incidents usually happen at low speeds. although, the incident can, has, and will happen at higher speeds. when it occurs at low speeds, the vehicle will accelerate slowly and refuse to turn. when the incident happens at higher speeds, the vehicle will seemingly lock the tires and if not handled correctly the driver can lose complete control of the suv. this particular defect seems to be a common issue among dodge durango 2nd generation owners. many say the dodge dealerships are skeptical on what exact repair is necessary to fix the apparent safety issue. durango owners experiences with technicians show many times they reportedly point the finger at various high dollar repairs. some have had success with replacing the transfer case motor but some who have pursued this repair have again reported the same issue after the repair was completed. originally, the safety concern was extremely rare. recently, the problem has become more consistent. it is a definite safety hazard as it can cause complete loss of control of the large vehicle. *tr

 I have a 2005 durango and lately it has been dying with no type of any warning. it usually will happen if i am turning a corner, coming to a stop and then trying to accelerate, or going through parking lots. saturday i had a car full of kids leaving a baseball game and i stopped at a stop sign to cross a busy hwy in my hometown and when i went to accelerate to go across the intersection of the hwy my durango died right there with oncoming traffic headed toward us...i couldn't steer and had to stop in the middle of the hwy with the kids in my car and put the car in park and frantically try to start the car hoping this would help (which thankfully it did this time). this has happened more than once and each time is getting more and more scarier. i am afraid to drive the car for fear one of these times my family and i won't be so lucky and will end up being killed due to the defect in the vehicle. i have reviewed many forums online and see many complaints in the forums where this has been brought to dodge's attention and even complaints on this site with nothing done to resolve this issue. this is very dangerous for everyone involved because of the stalling of the vehicle. please listen to the consumers and help resolve this issue. thank you.

 I was making a u turn and the truck just shut off on me. i had put it on park and restart the engine. i experienced the issue numerous times and have taken it back to car max and they are unable to locate why the vehicle was just cutting off. i recently experienced where the car would start and turn off. just today i was trying to park the vehicle and the engine just cut off.

 I was in nyc last week. i was making a turn in the city the truck cut off. a tracker trailer and several cars were behind me. i was able to put the car in park and re-start it. however, if someone behind was not paying attention that accident could have been terrible. prior to that i was driving on the fdr and truck cut off on me again, while in traffic. again i had to put the truck in park and start it up again. i know good and well chrysler knows about this problem because i see to many durango owners with the same problem. please create a recall we and our families lives are depending on it!!!!

 This has been an ongoing issue with our durango. the first time it happened was about one month after i bought it used with approx 60k miles on it. it is totally at random. i'm always able to pop it into neutral and start it back up again as if nothing ever happened. the biggest problem with this is not only that the engine totally shuts off(as if that isn't a huge issue initself), but that the power steering/power brakes go out as well making the possibility of an accident a huge issue. it has always had a stutter when driving. after taking it to the dealer, being told they couldn't replicate the problem or pull any codes. in order for them to find the problem i would have to pay them to locate their defect. at this point dodge needs to resolve this since i am not the only one experiencing this huge safety issue. i urge everyone to also submit this problem to the nhtsa.

 When negotiating a right turn through an intersection, my 2005 dodge durango would not turn in the expected direction of travel; thereby the vehicle proceeded into a ditch. no injuries to driver. no damage to property or other vehicles. after review of the vehicle for damage, the right front tire appeared to be severely misaligned and broken from the tie rod assembly. as of the date of this complaint, there severity of the damage to the vehicle has yet to be determined, and is still under review with the insurance company. *tr

 Tl*the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. when the vehicle reaches 60 mph, it feels as if it will flip over and the wheels are uncontrollable. the contact stated that the vehicle does not need to be aligned; however, they pull the vehicle in the opposite direction. the vehicle also clunks and clinks during acceleration and the engine light remains illuminated. the sensors were changed and the engine light dimmed; however, it illuminated again the following day and still remains lit. the vehicle has new brakes and when the brake pedal is depressed, the vehicle jumps before it stops. the contact must turn the steering wheel in order to avoid a crash. nhtsa campaign id number's 05v460000 (power train:automatic transmission) and 07v092000 (electrical system: instrument panel) were referenced. the current mileage was 82,000 and failure mileage was 62,000.

 We purchased a 2005 dodge durango used march 11, 2006 with 16,568, miles on it. on march 13th two days after we purchased it and 16,614 miles later (48 miles later) the truck broke down on the highway! we had the truck towed in to earnhardts dodge, find out the ring gear and pinion set needs replaced, differential side bearings - all axles replace (includes case and side gears if necessary) this is quoted from all my receipts. 2nd time around (july 18,2006) - now has 24,795 miles on it, rear end issues again! again this is the repairs - seal, axle shaft oil - replace all other axles-right. brake pads, disc brake-both sides rear replace due right rear axle seal leaking contaminated pads, rotor has fluid burned into the surface. replaced right axle seal and brakes. also had to replace watts link sway bar, replaced bell crank and links. replaced both rear stabilizer bars again. 3rd time (january 10,2007) - now at 38,051 miles replace seal, axle shaft oil, replace all other axles - replace seal, drive pinion oil replace all others. 4th time, (january 29,2007) now at 39,329 again, replaced bell crank, watts link. 5th time (july 16,2007) - 52,058 failed bearing in rear diff, need to replace ring & pinion and all bearings- cost - $1,474, (why would i want to pay this much when they haven't been able to fix this problem?) told them to put the truck back together, we can't afford to fix it. 6th time - now after researching this vehilce, we found out, earnhardts dodge/hyundai in gilbert arizona (same placed we purchased it at) january 17,2006) (now 6 repairs) noticed the durango had rear differtial leaks, they replaced seal, drive pinion oil and all three parts - then returned the vehicle to stock when it was finished at 16,614 miles! just 48 miles before we purchased the vehicle!! *tr

 The vehicle is making popping noise when turning. i traded my 2003 caravan in for the durango because it was making the same noise that my new durango is making and the dealerships (2 different ones) could not find or fix the problem. now the durango is making the noise and the dealerships cant fix it. i called chrysler and all they could suggested was to take it to a different dealership. if that's all they can do then i will file lemon law after the fourth trip to the dealership and will never buy another dodge/chrysler vehicle... *nm

 I drive a '05' durango. this morning on my way to work i slowed to turn into my parking lot and the vehicle did not turn. the sterring wheel had locked while the vehicle was in drive, still running and moving forward. i immediately locked up the breaks, just prior to going in the ditch. i then put the vehicle in park and the engine stalled. the vehicle did refire and i reached my destination. within 30 minutes i had dropped the vehicle at the dealer. i have since been informed they can find nothing wrong with this vehicle, as expected.

 Leading up to failure: rainy days failure: when driving down wet city roads and pavement is puddled, water is splashed onto the undercarriage, i lose power steering. at first, i thought the durango had lost power, but realized it was the steering i lost. the steering belt screams loudly afterwards as well. you have no warning when this will happen, but you can expect it on rainy days. i perceive this as a problem because if you are turning out onto a busy street, then lose your power steering, it poses a danger to myself and other motorists. we all know how difficult it is to steer without power steering. when we phoned the maintenance shop where we bought it, they were not concerned, quickly dismissed me and told me that it would have to do it for them as well, otherwise there was nothing that could be done. we have since ditched the durango and bought a different vehicle from a different dealership. i am picking a random date for the incident date, since this happens anytime it rains. for number of failures - it's any time it rains and the belt gets wet. they should protect the belt better somehow! and this durango was a 4x4 - you would think it could handle anything, on-road or off-road! *jb

 Ball joint failure on 2005 dodge durango. i find it amazing that a vehicle that 27 months old and driven soley on the streets of new jersey would suffer ball joint and tie rodend failure. the vehicle has only 40k miles and has been dealer service. *tr

 I have a 2005 dodge durango that has been in the shop 3 times for a rough idle and the dealership says they can't feel it, and don't know what it is, although it has died on me several times. also, i just found out i need a new rack and pinion and it isn't covered under warranty. it has 54,000 miles and i have a 70,000 powertrain warranty, but apparently, it isn't covered. *tr
