| The agency, particularly in recent months, has been informed of incidents involving allegations of personal injury and death claimed to have been caused by safety defects and failures to conform to minimum federal motor vehicle safety standards (fmvss) on rental car vehicles for which a safety recall to remedy the safety defect or noncompliance had allegedly not been performed prior to the rental car company's lease of the vehicle.nhtsa understands that there is presently a petition before the federal trade commission (ftc) seeking to prohibit at least one rental car company from renting vehicles on which safety recall campaign remedies remain outstanding.the purpose of this audit query (aq) is to investigate recall remedy completion by rental car companies on the above-listed safety recall campaigns.these campaigns were chosen due to their inclusion of vehicles used in the rental market.this information is expected to provide the agency an indication of how completely and how quickly rental car fleets, in general or individually, perform necessary recall-related repairs or other remedies on the vehicles owned and then leased for use on the roadways.this aq is opened. | ||||||

| I received a letter recently from my local dodge dealer indicating my 2005 dodge durango would require repair for something causing the fuel to spill out during fill up. this has happened to me several times in the past as i was unaware that there was a recall for this. after receiving this letter a few weeks ago i inspected the quarter panel underneath the gas tank more closely noticing bubbling of the paint with chipping starting. pressing on the paint it sounded corrosive like rust. as i began to chip some of the paint away i discovered rust and two holes that were completely through. looking through the holes i could see rust behind the body. after reviewing several car and dodge forums i see that this has happened to several people in the same area of the drive quarter panel. i can only assume there is a correlation between the fuel problem and the rust that appears to have come inside out to the body of the car. there is no other rust on this car and has been well maintained. i contacted my local dealer who informed me that the recall on the inlet valve is still valid however rust would not be. it concerns me that chrysler doesn't feel responsible for the damage caused by their defective item. how could i have know that this was happening since i just received notification i'm concerned the rust damage is more great than i can actually see. of course i'm additionally concerned with possible fire etc which is what the recall specifically indicates. i will make appointment with the dealership for repair of the fuel inlet valve.i would like chrysler to also pay for the damage that was caused by their defective part. i have 99,200 miles currently. i don't want my concerns to be dismissed as i feel i'm not the only one that this has happened to. i only received a letter recently for this problem so i feel all parts of the problem should be addressed. | |||

| Was driving down the road then came to my neighborhood --- the road was clear but the turn light up ahead had just changed --- so i had time to make my turn into my neighborhood but when i attempted to turn the vehicle just shut off the -- there were two oncoming cars the one in lead began blowing but the car could not be steered or anything. luckily the cars had time to stop --- so, i quickly put the vehicle in park and attempted to restart the vehicle. thankfully it started and i was able to continue to pull into my neighborhood. my 10-year old daughter was in the front passenger side and began to scream when she heard the horns blowing --- this could have been tragic---what is the problem and why are these vehicles still able to be sold. i just purchased this vehicle on saturday. then while in my neighborhood i called a friend we test drove the vehicle -- the haul/tow light was on then off -- the right rear light was off the on the way back to be park it came on again-- the passenger air bag light was on then a few minutes later it was off. in addition the vehicle shut off again twice while turning the corner onto another street in the neighborhood. | |||

| This car has stalled multiple of times, with no lights, no warning of it going to happen. this is very dangerous and i have taken it to bob boyd dealership where i bought the car 6 years ago. it now has around 80000 miles on it and in the last few months, it has started to get worse. i took it to the dealership and they told me that they cant do anything with it until the can replicate the problem. the first time i took it there, it was 1 year after i bought it, they replaced the battery as they said that was the problem. was till the year and now the problem is back again. this time more frequent. i have taken the car to them twice now and they give me the same answer, that they cant fix it till it breaks, they have to replicate the problem to make sure they can fix it, meanwhile, i have a car thats not working right and very dangerous. they had the car for two days the first time, and then took it back to them after it stalled driving it home from the dealership. the second time, they kept it for over a week, still, they say they cant fix it cause they dont know what the problem is. you can google this problem and it is wide spread across this country, other dodge products are doing the same thing and the dealerships arent doing anything to fix it. please contact these people and give us consumers a fighting chance in getting this fixed. i will never buy another dodge product after this. thanks for reading this, and if you decide to do something about this, thank you dearly for doing so. sincerely, webster stump | |||

| First incident happened at a low speed coming into a turn. i did some research online and found that most durango owners had luck with fuel system cleaning and/or egr valve replacements. i did both, and the vehicle ran fine up until today (2 months later). there were previous investigations for recall services a few years back, but they were closed out. i hope dodge decides to open an investigation again.. i do not want to be paying $200 every 2 months for fuel cleaning services. this is ridiculous. | |||

| The bolts used on the manifold are defective and break off into the head of the engine causing damage. due to this, the manifold is not tight and secure and causes exhaust fumes to be released. | |||

| I have owned this vehicle for approximately four years now. it has a persistent and very unsettling problem of stalling for no apparent reason with no corresponding warning lights etc. it just dies and the power steering and brakes fail resulting in significant loss of steering and braking effectiveness. this problem has occurred intermittently with no pattern of origin evident several times over the past few years. on several occasions, it has occurred while pulling out into busy traffic lanes across intersections. i have been able to put it into neutral and immediately restart it to avoid a collision. i have utilized fuel cleaners and changed the spark plugs etc. in a effort to resolve the issue. it happened again today at low speed in a parking lot fortunately..just died without warning. i researched this online and found that this is a common engine problem complaint with the durango. today, this occurred with over 3/4 tank of fresh fuel in the tank. this problem constitutes an immediate safety hazard to owners of these vehicles and i am requesting that nhsta initiates an investigation into it's cause ( s ) - thank you - related website link re: common problem - http://www.carcomplaints.com/dodge/durango/2005/engine/stalling_without_warning.shtml | |||

| I just purchased this vehicle used from a certified chrysler dealership. before finalizing purchase, the dealership filled the gas tank for us. the sales manager noted that he needed to clean up the side of the vehicle--that the gas pump had overflowed. 2 days later when i went to fill up the tank, i had the same issue--the gas tank overflowed. i have looked this issue up online and it seems there was a recall for only a select set of vin numbers. according to chrysler, my vehicle was not a part of the recall. clearly, my vehicle should have been included. it appears the fix to this issue is to replace the gas tank. also, it is now clear to me that the 2 small rust bubbles near the gas tank are being caused by gas overflowing every time somebody fills up the vehicle. this is a safety issue and should be fixed by the chrysler corporation. | |||

| Everytime i go to the gas station to pump gas i get a huge splash of gas all over me and my vehicle. i was doing some research and i think its covered as a recall but dodge said it was not when i called. i am going to print out the recall notice and bring it in. how can you help me get this dangerous problem resolved as many other people have the same problem. especially when you get it on your work clothes and smell like gasoline all day and left gas spill on the car, gas station concrete etc. not so pleasant. its been ongoing for i would say over a year and the over flow is getting worse and squirting everywhere. so scared to pump gas and stand far away so splash does not hit me and clean up as best as i can everytime i pump gas. | |||

| Bought car in 2007 had to replace one key because of electronics at 180 dollars each, 2009 changed car battery had to reset keys at 80 dollars, 2011 keys need replaced again at 130 dollars each. bad design so they can keep fleasing you for money. also had fuel tank replaced, brake lines rubbed together causing hole in line and loss of brakes, dust cover on drivers seat belt broke off, screws in back tail gate keep loosening and falling out. | |||

| 2005 dodge durango limited, 5.7l hemi v8 stalls while backing up. first time it happened the truck started right back up immediately. the second time on 11/28/11, it took 3 times to restart the vehicle. this has only happened while in reverse. apparently this is a common problem with the hemis and there is a tsb #0802404 to reflash the engine and update the software. the forums state that this is a fix for some vehicles, but not all. i am scared to be in this car with my kids now-what if we stall on the highway and get into a wreck? please fix this issue! our safety is my number one concern, and should be yours as well, dodge! | |||

| My 2002 dodge durango shuts off while driving, this happens everytime i drive this verhicle, therefore will not take it on any highways or were there is alot of traffic, once it shuts off i have no steering or brakes and have been very close to being in accidents. this is going to kill someone and i hope and pray to god this is not what it is going to take for dodge to do a recall. it is just totally unbelievable that dodge would not look into this and risk a lawsuit from somebody being seriously being injured or even killed. i have had my vehicle to a dodge dealer, to several other mechanics and noone can tell me what the problem is. please help!!! | |||

| 2005 dodge durango 5.7 liter hemi. on freeway, engine started pulling and missing and shut off. 75 mph freeway speed, extremely dangerous situation. had a car load of kids. was able to put car in neutral, and start the engine (doesnt start immediately). ran fine for about 50 miles afterwards. happens about every 50 miles of driving. has been going on for 6 months. gives no codes as to what it can be. cleaned throttle, worked a for about a week, then problem continued today. its getting harder to get it started once it gives out. egr replaced ($500.00), battery (200.00), spark plugs (150.00), replaced fuel pump last week (220.00 with labor)...i'm basically tired of this!!!!!!! checked dodge forum and there is a lot of people having the same problem. no accidents have occured as of yet, but whats to say someone isnt going to be killed by this happening! please, please, please look into this problem. i'm all out of ideas, as are the dodge dealers and mechanics i've dealt with. for your sake, this needs to be taken care of before the lawsuits start coming. | |||

| 2005 dodge durango stalls while driving without warning. had the dodge dealership service center in local area diagnose it, and they reflashed the pcm and gave it a tune-up. there aren't any codes coming up during diagnostics. $400 and an hour later it was still stalling. it stalls on average three times a day without warning, sometimes while stopping or turning. it is extremely dangerous and i don't want my children in the vehicle; however, i need to drive to get to work. | |||

| My 05 durango 5.7 hemi stalled without warning twice in my driveway and once as i was turning left. no power steering,no power brakes,no check engine lights came on, it was very sudden and find this to be dangerous. i have found that other durango owners are having the same issues. i think it's time dodge figures out what to do before something terrible happens. i transport my grandchildren and also like to travel alot and i am afraid to drive now. lets's hope this problem is acknowledged soon enough. thank you | |||

| I have a 2005 dodge durango 5.7 hemi that my husband and i purchased at the end of may 2010. i have only had 5 months and after the first month it stalled on me. the first time it happened i was in a parking lot and went to start it and it wouldn't start. took 3 times until it did start and stay started. a month later it happend again only this time it shut off while i was driving with my husband and 3 kids. luckly i was on a back road and was only going 10 mph. so i was able to stop and restart it. it started up fine that time. the third time i was in another parking lot and it wouldn't stay started when i tried to start it. took another 3 times before it did. the last time it happend was today, october 22, 2010. i was on my way home from taking my kids to school and tried to turn to go up the hill to my street when i realized i couldn't turn or stop cause my vehicle cut off again and i lost complete control since i had no power steering or brakes. i almost went into the ditch but luckly was able to stop since i wasn't going very fast. this was my last straw since if i do wreck it will be my fault and i will have to pay for it since there is no recall out on this situation. i have had it looked at and no one knows what it wrong and thinks i am crazy since it can't be recreated. after seeing how this has been reported since 2005, as long as the gas tank has been reported and got recalled, that this isn't recalled. this is completely dangerous!!!! i have 3 kids and this can cause an accident and hurt someone or even possible kill someone!!! i don't want my kids to die before something gets done. i have reported this and called chrysler and reported it and i suggest everyone do the same! call 18009921997. if we can report this enough, maybe it will raise attention to someone to do something. i am fearful to drive this truck and even more fearful for my kids to be in it and it is suppose to be our family car. if i get in a wreck i will get a lawyer and i will sue them | |||

| I have a 2005 dodge durango that was purchased from cars plus in lenoir, nc in march 2010. starting about three weeks ago the vehicle began to lose all power while it was being driven if you start aroun a turn or hit the breaks. this does not occur every time you take a turn or hit the brakes. in the past three weeks it has happened 8 times. when this happens the vehicle looses all power. you have no brakes and no power steering. there are no warnings this is going to happen. we have had it to the local dodge dealer twice and someone else once. nothing pulls up on the computer and they can't find anything wrong. dodge has told me this is my problem, even though there are about 800 complaints about this problem in the 2005 durangos on the computer, because my warranty is out. i am affraid to drive this vehicle because i don't want to be in an accident. i don't want any injury to come to my children or someone else's children. i am paying payments on a vehicle i can't drive and don't want to trade it in and someone else get stuck with this vehicle and possibly get injured driving it. i don't have any more options and would like to know what to do. my insurance company has told me i would be responsible for any accident in this vehicle because they can't find a deffect. i don't want to trade my vehicle in to the dealership and just pass the problem along, but i need a depedable vehicle. please advise me what to do with this safety issue. | |||

| I have already filed this complaint but never got any resolution and the problem is getting worse. the engine stalls at low speeds. it sounds just like your what is described in your investigation ea05018. it is now at the mechanic and they have been unable to diagnose a problem so far. i am concerned about driving this vehicle and if this is a known defect i want to know why chrysler/dodge or the odi cannot offer a fix immediately before safety is further compromised? | |||

| My 2005 dodge durango keeps shutting off while i'm driving. i am usually turning and going less than 20 mph when it shuts off. my radio stays when this occurs. i have to put it in park and turn it back on. it has done this since 2006 shortly after i purchased it. i have taken it to the dodge dealership where i purchased twice and have been told that nothing shows up wrong. they suggested the next time it does it, to leave it be and have it towed. umm, kinda difficult when i am in the road when it shuts off. | |||

| I bought my 05 durango with the 5.7 hemi v8 had no problems then a few months went by an started to notice the stalling problem took it to shops no problems so i went online to further ivestigate and i found similiar compalints well today drew the straw was driving down the interstate 75mph an the dam thin shut off no power no steering no nothing had my kids in the back seat as well... when is this company going to realize they have a major problem somewhere that is very very dangerous especially if it shuts off with no notice and has no power to slow the vehicle down an get out of harms way... and of course it cranks right back up but then shuts off again happens sometimes then weeks months can go by and it just does it again | |||

| I was driving our 2005 dodge durango with our 2 young children in it. made a left turn, traveling at approx. 5-10 miles per hour when vehicle stalled without warning. no steering...no power braking...nothing. truck was able to restart immediately following the event. we took it to our mechanic who could find nothing wrong with the truck. after reading everyone else's complaints. i'm not surprised. i am terrified to drive this vehicle and will not put our children in it. current mileage is 66,000. what if this happens when i am in an intersection or merging onto the interstate? | |||

| Whenever i am stopped or idlling, my car will shut off by itself. the rpm gauge will jump up and down and the engine will rev by itself, while my foot is on the brake. the dashboard lights will flicker, then the car shuts off. the interior electrical is off but the running/outside lights are still on. the steering tightens up,but the brakes work. the car is able to be put in park, shut off and started right back up, so far. it normally only happens when going at slower speeds, or stopping and being idle. this has been happening for a few months, normally once a week, but this past weekend it has happened three times. we now dont leave town with this vehicle and i am actually scared to drive it just around town. i have kids and dont want something to happen while im driving at accelerated speed. according to all of the 100's of other complaints i have found, no one is able to figure out what is wrong, dealerships cant find a problem or codes. which has been my issue. plus, dodge doesnt want to do anything to help. i was told i shouldnt look on the internet for complaints. | |||

| My 2005 dodge durango v8 hemi, several months back, started losing all power while driving including power steering and power brakes. i would have to try and coast to a stop without being involved in or causing an accident. the durango would then restart and run fine. this has been increasing in frequency over the past couple of months with it occuring twice yesterday, march 29,2010. this is becoming a serious safety hazard and will undoubtedly cause an accident. it has occured while turning, slowing down for traffic, and while accelerating through an interesction. i have called dodge on several occasions with no answer as to what the problem is or that they would fix it, as it is an obvious safety concern. there are many sites with other owners voicing this same thing happening to them and also list that this was brought to dodge's attention in the past and they didnt feel that it was important enough for them to issue a recall to get the problem fixed. i only hope it doesn't cost soimeone's life for them to admit that it is of concern to them | |||

| Our 2005 dodge durango with a 5.7 hemi engine shut itself off out of the blue while driving home. it is the third time it has happened in the last 3 months. driving speed was around 35 mph. it happened as we let up on the throttle. it does restart but it is very hard to stop and control when it happens. | |||

| Tl-the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact was driving approximately 25 mph on normal road conditions. the opposing vehicle informed the driver flames were erupting from the vehicle. the driver pulled over to the side of the road and exited the vehicle. immediately, the vehicle fully engulfed into flames. the fire department was called to the scene. there were no personal injuries. the vehicle was completely destroyed. the insurance company was notified of the incident. the cause of failure has not been determined at this time. the contact had concern of the safety risk involved. the failure and current mileages were 60,000. js | |||
