As i was exiting a highway, my 2006 dodge durango suddenly stalled out. the engine light came on after it stalled. i lost control of steering and was unable to brake. i nearly crashed into the car in front of me, and was barely able to turn the steering wheel enough to run into the curb to stop my vehicle! i was not able to re-start it and had to be towed. while waiting for police to arrive, i was nearly rear-ended multiple times. it was towed to a shop and the mechanic was able to start it up with no problem the next morning. he checked everything, and ran all diagnostic tests - all came back showing no problems. there is clearly a problem - and there are man, many, many complaints about it all over the internet. if i had been on the highway when this happened, i could have been in a very serious accident and could have been killed, or killed someone else, since i lost complete control of the vehicle and was unable to steer or brake. is it going to take a fatality before this is recalled and fixed?????? i am scared to death to drive it now! *tr

I first noticed a problem when leaving work by simply unlocking my 06 durango (all wheel drive/ 4 wheel drive) with the key fob the transfer case control motor starts shifting the truck in and out from awd to 4wd and i haven't even opened the door!! as the weeks pass it does this several more times but what is more unnerving is that as i am driving at hwy speeds, 60 to 70 mph, or any speed really, my 4 wheel low light on the dash will start to flicker as if it is trying to shift into 4 wheel low un-commanded. after searching several forums i find this to be a common chronic electrical problem with durangos and a huge safety risk. please understand that max speed for a 4 wheel drive vehicle that is in 4 wheel low is about 10 to 15 mph, the gear ratio is extremely low and intended for maximum traction when off road. if this vehicle shifts into 4 wheel low at 70 mph all 4 wheels will come to a stop and the driver will most likely loose total control. at that speed this is a dangerous combination. i have read of this happening to durangos with serious damage and huge expense for the owner. this very scenario happened to a co-workers wife with his kids in their 06 durango, luckily she was only traveling at about 30 to 35 mph and no accident occurred. now my key fob wont even open the door, it acts as if its dead or broken. i have to use the key to unlock the truck manually which sets off the alarm every time i unlock the door. the same electrical problem i started with is tied to the 4 wheel drive electrically, another common chronic problem. my local dodge dealer denies having any knowledge of this problem or a fix and from what i have read dodge denies it as well. is it going to take a family's death from one of these vehicles for dodge to own up to this and recognize they have a very wide spread problem over several years manufacturing! *tr

We were driving our 2006 dodge durango for about 5 minutes when all of a sudden the dash board lights started flashing. my husband was able to veer off the road on a side street and coast down into a parking lot. by this point the car was completely unresponsive. smoke started to come out of the vehicle vents on the dashboard. we thought maybe a part broke at first. my husband opened the hood and there was no visible fires and not a lot of smoke. smoke started coming more and more quickly out of the vents. we got our 3 children out of the car. by this point smoke was billowing out. my husband ran into a building and called for help. the business gave us a fire extinguisher and called the fire department. as my husband ran back to the durango flames he saw the dashboard start to collapse. next thing we knew flames were flying up the front window. he used the fire extinguisher on it. the fireman arrived and helped make sure the fire was completely out. *tr

Upon turning into parking lot of local store, car shut down and system locked up. no power steering and no engine light came on. was able to steer car to parking space, stop and restart vehicle. this is the second occurence in 2 weeks. same scenario, going slow in parking lot and vehicle shuts down. another problem has come up now when after i start the vehicle in the morning, it surges from 1000 rpm to 2000 back and forth for about 10-15 seconds. my questions for the durango makers is when will their be a total recall on these suv's?

2006 dodge durango with multifunction switch issues. the windshield wipers work only on a slow intermittent speed. only the right turn signal works, and will activate when the turn signal lever is pushed to make a left turn (the right signal only will blink). this switch was also replaced in 2008 because of the same problem. there was 40000 miles on the vehicle at that point. there is now 75000 miles.

We have a 2006 dodge durango and we have several issues with it. the instrument cluster stopped working along with the radio, a/c, wipers, windows and everything in the interior. the instrument cluster was fixed during a recall. we called chrysler and they told us that it was fixed once for the recall and they would not replace it again. the dealership want to replace the cluster again to fix the issue, but i'm concerned about it happening again while my wife and children are on the road again with no lights!!!!

We have a 2006 dodge durango. when you turn the key to the on position the vehicle would start by itself without going to the start position. this happens every time you do this. the dealership replace the ignition switch which cost us $300.

We own a 2006 dodge durango and over the summer while driving my radio started and stopped working, my navigation system starting blinking, and then finally my car stopped working altogether. we found both of the relays to the electrical system on our durang full of water but when i called the dealership they denied ever hearing of this issue and started that there was no warranty. we shook out the relays, left them unplugged overnight, and used a hair dryer to dry any remaining moisture. as long as i keep my vehicle parked in the garage and unplug the relay after we wash the car we don't have any problems. however, the air bag light was the only warning light that we could not get to go out. over the weekend i heard on headline news that the 2008 dodge caravans are being recalled for moisture getting into the airbags. i called and explained my issue with our 2006 dodge durango and they told me that it was not under recall. interesting to note is that the dealership inquires about the mileage on your vehicle. i was told by their representative that low mileage vehicles can have a chance at goodwill repairs but not high mileage vehicles. i'm not sure if 75,000 miles is considered low or high but what is at issue is that dodge knows that there is an issue but they are not correcting it on all of the defective vehicles only on their 2008s.

It all started when i took my 2006 dodge durango in to change a fuse. ( was under warranty). about 1 month later the following started. headlights flash on & off while driving day or night, turn signal will go on & off, dome lights will go on& off, wipers with wash will go on & off, & the radio will change channels. this happens all the time day or night no matter the temps. lately seems like the heat & cool air don't blow for the floor. it was at the shop numerous times & no answers. i did contact dodge itself & now they may have a fix for $500 for me but not totally sure that will fix the problem. *tr

2006 dodge durango has had multiple engine & electrical problems within 6 month period. first car lost all power while driving at 35 mph, took all strength to get car to shoulder of the road w/o power steering & locked steering column. local mechanic said that computer was fried & covered under emissions warranty. towed to dodge dealership who said there was not a computer problem, just cam shaft needed replacing & recall on instrument panel cluster. after $450 repair for cam shaft & tow, a week later car started having electrical problems. aprox every other time i would start car, the radio & electrical display (clock) on radio would not work--appeared to not get power. six weeks later, check engine light came on again. by this time, original dodge dealership had been closed, so went to another dodge dealer for service. they found another wiring problem with engine. could not identify problem with audio/clock. check engine light went on about 2 months later. this time local mechanic advised it was a fuel pump problem. replaced fuel pump, checked fuse & still could not identify problem with audio/display. 9 days later went to start car in the am, and electrical seemed to sputter (lights, instrument pane, wipers, radio) but car would not start. starter does not appear to be engaging the engine at all. diagnosed as started motor problem, starter motor replaced, but car still not fixed. then told battery terminals & cables needed to be replaced. car now starts, but audio/display issue still unresolved. concern that there is a larger problem with the electrical system of this vehicle, which is the root cause of all recent problems. getting scared to drive this car on interstate or in any level of traffic for fear that it will stall out or lose power during operation again. the car only has 42,000 miles on it. first problem started with 37,000 miles on vehicle. i hate this car!!!!! *tr

When my fuel tank is empty and i refill the tank, after the pump clicks off gas pours out of the tank. this has been happening for about 7 weeks. also sometimes when starting the vehicle it doesn't start but continues to turn itself over and over even after the key is shut off. this happens sporadically and dodge refuses to fix either one although the vehicle is still under warranty, because it cannot be duplicated at the shop. *tr

Hi, my name is kevin moore, and i need some help. january 9th 2007 i purchased a 2006 dodge durango from buddy jones ford in greenwood mississippi. on may 31st 2008, the truck burn to the ground. this occurred while my girlfriend was driving it; she barely made it out of the truck in time. needless to say i was at a lost of understanding how this could have happen. so i immediately started surf the internet to find information about this brand of vehicle. i discovered that this particular suv had an instrument panel cluster that would overheat and sometimes ignite into flames. i also discovered that there were many other consumers that had experienced they're dodge durango's burning to ground, while just sitting in the garage. so i then contacted chrysler to plead my case. at this time they told me about the recall, and that my vehicle was one of the vehicles in question. then they agreed to send a local contracted inspector to check out my vehicle. the conclusion of his inspection was that the truck burned through no fault of chrysler

My 2006 dodge durango caught on fire four weeks ago while my girlfriend was driving it. the truck had only been running a total of tens. it appeared to have started on the driver side of the truck. once i discovered the recall on the truck for the instrument panel overheating, i contacted chrysler, and they sent a local contracted inspector out to take picture. then a week later they sent me a letter stating that they were not at fault, and there was nothing they could do for me. *tr

Purchased 2006 dodge durango june, 2007 august, 2007-vehicle started violently jerking -engine light came on-was told it was the cam sensor. instrument cluster also defective and replaced. electrical problem, causing door locks to malfunction replaced. december 6, 2007, car jerking again-engine light came on - drove it to the dealership - was told it was the transmission- front pump and torque converter replaced. december 18, 2007 mileage not reading accurately-told that the instrument cluster that was installed in august was ?faulty?. replaced again. january 2, 2008, vehicle violently jerking again- dying in the road, if over 40mph. engine light on-dealer replaced the cam sensor. -very hesitant that my car was become a threat. february 22, 2008, vehicle jerking, then died on the road at 45mph -able to start it, drove to the dealer-was told it was the pcm. pcm replaced -cam sensor also. complained to chrysler, trying to get answers for this ?lemon?. was told this time that they were 100% they fixed the problem. dealer gave me written ?good will? extended warranty on my vehicle for 5,000 extra miles. april 15, 2008. traveling 45mph- car started violently jerking again and died in the middle of the highway. power steering gone- struggled to veer of and slow down, losing control. this time, a bus was behind me and swerved, laid on the horn and avoided hitting me. was able to make it to the shoulder of the road-called the dealership. towed my car. have had enough of this vehicle -will not put my family in danger one more time!!!! . need to be free and clear of all financial responsibility of this car. dealer now tells me that they are ?hard-wiring? the pcm directly to the cam sensor. they told me that there is a ?glitch? within the wiring that they will simply bypass by putting in a direct connection, thus manipulating original wiring codes.. i will not put myself and 3 children in this situation again, and refuse to pick up my vehicle! *tr

During times of low temperatures (below 40 degrees) the following occurs intermittently. the radio controls on the steering wheel do not work properly, the radio volume spontaneously goes down, the headlights and dash lights flash off and on, the windshield wipers will come on, the indicator lights for the airbag indicate the airbag is not activated. i am sure there are more glitches; however these are the ones that stand out. this morning, however, the cruise control would not stop accelerating the vehicle. the outside temperature is approximately 22 degrees. i set the cruise for 75, when i reviewed the speed, the vehicle had accelerated to 95 and the cruise would not shut off either by the cruise control controls or by braking. in fact the brakes had difficulty slowing the vehicle down to 75 and when released the vehicle would again accelerate. when placed into neutral, the vehicle continued revving and when placed in drive it again accelerated. when i was finally able to slow the vehicle by placing it in neutral and continue to push hard on the brakes, i maneuvered the vehicle to the side of the road and turned the vehicle off. it then would not re-start. the ignition wouldn't turn over for approximately 5 minutes. once restarted the vehicle appears to be working fine. i reported this to the dealer this morning. they were already aware of the previous irregularities and advised they would be talking to the support center today. they have already replaced the clock spring in the vehicle and that did not correct the problem. they have advised that they are aware there is a problem but they do not know how to fix it.*jb

Air conditioning not cooling properly. tested vent temperatures in identical conditions using an infrared temperature probe and a normal analog temperature probe. used 1997 mercury mountaineer in test with my new 2006 dodge durango. tested initial left center vent temp and the temp after 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 minutes using the dash vents only and max cool and max fan. the nine year old mountaineer vent temp was 9 or 10 degrees cooler after 5 minutes. the older vehicle cooled faster and provided colder air temps. this testing was done after noticing the durango wasn't cooling as well as my old mountaineer. *jb
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM - IGNITION

Intermittent and spontaneous activation of the windshield wipers and washers during operation of the steering wheel under normal driving conditions. steering wheel sound system controls work erratically or in reverse of normal function. ignition remains engaged until switch is recycled. seems to be low temperature related( happens more often in the cooler am). vehicle has been to the dealer multiple times for repair attempts. clock spring, multifunction switch, individual audio controls, and the front control module have been replaced under warranty by the dealer with out correcting the problem. dealer states that chrysler will not authorize additional diagnosis. i am concerned that this is an electrical short in the steering column that may result in air bag deployment, or a vehicle fire, and injuries to my family. chrysler reps will not address the problem when i have repeatedly attempted to contact them via their hotline at 1-800-992-1997. *nm

*tr
