The fuel pump problem was diagnosed on 11-27-96, however, the van had been towed into dodge dealerships on two prior occassions, beginning 11-11-96. initially no problem could be found. the van had died while driving on the interstate. about two weeks later, the van died again in city traffic. spark plug wires were replaced. the next day the van died again in city traffic. ultimately, the fuel pump and filter were replaced. each time the van needed towing to the nearest dealership. on 10-14-99, the van made a popping noise while being driven at 40 mph on a country road. i stopped the van and discovered transmission fuid leaking from under the engine. i called a tow truck and had it taken to the dealership. there had been no warning prior to the pop and subsequent leakage. the dealer reported that the transmission needed replacing. there were no obstacles on the road that may have resulted in the problem.

Had dealer complete recall # 99v216000 in early 2000, upon driving home and filling the fuel tank noticed large amount of fuel leaking under vehicle. dealer towed vehilce back to dealership (their expense), and replaced cracked attaching nut from recall work. drove home (70 miles) and discovered small quantity of fuel still leaking from tank fittings. returned vehicle to dealer (my expense). shop advised they tightened loose attaching nut from previous recall. still noticed odor of fuel consistantly but could not see any leaks as previous. due to concerns about fire safety (i'm the fire chief in homer) i took vehicle to local garage (my expense). they found this same attaching nut and fuel pump module assemble leaking and referred me back to the dealership. returned vehicle to dealership on november 27, 2001 and picked it up on december 5 after they replaced sealing o-ring and attaching nut from previous recall (almost $100.00 of my expense). filled fuel tank on dec. 6 and discovered large quantity of fuel leaking from same area under vehicle. reported problem to dealship and they advised to return vehicle to them for further repair, with them recommending and ordering replacement fuel tank. i suspect a combination of poor quality work and possible design flaws with the tank and fuel pump module assembly, nut and o-ring.*ak

When parking on a steep incline two weeks ago, i noticed the smell of gas. i looked at the gas tank and saw significant leakage. i took the vehicle to the chrysler dealer where i have my service done. i was told by bob leland that the cause of the lead was the rollover valve on top of the tank, and that the only remedy was a complete gas tank replacement at a cost of $809, plus tax. he said there is another rollover valve on this vehicle that was subject to a recall, but that this is a different rollover valve. i contacted two persons at daimler-chrysler customer service (using the number that bob leland gave me). both person, ryan and jule at 800 992 1997 indicated that the part was not subject to recall, was not under warranty, and therefore they would not pay for repair--or contribute to the expense of repair. i was told by bob leland that there was no good reason for the rollover valve to crack, i.e. there was no sign of any trauma to vehicle or any indications of an accident. i had the vehicle inspected by renton chrysler before i purchased it from the orignal owner, and they confirmed that it had never been in a wreck. i have had no wrecks since owning the vehicle. i took the vehicle to a goodyear service center in town (new concepts auto at 509.747.2164). they pulled up the technical service bulletin, showing numerous problems with the fuel tank, rollover valve, and fuel lines. they were unsure whether the tsb referred specifically to the top valve. because they had a lower estimate to repair ($720 including tax), i gave them the go ahead to repair today. i cannot drive the van with a fuel leak, especially with my infant and toddler iusing car seats. this is a serious hazard, and i believe that chrysler should pay for the repair. i have instructed the goodyear shop to inspect for any trauma to the tank and car, and i am sure they will find none. i will also have them keep the tank so that it can be inspected asap. leland aware of 2 similar cases.

This is a followup on odi 757393 submitted on 1/24/2002 and amended 1/27/2002. upon towed return of vehicle to service agent repair shop, service agent investigated visible gasoline leak. upon careful examination of the replacement vent assembly, service agent reported that while the part looked like the right part; it indeed was an incorrect part. the service agent said the part was previously packaged and shipped in a box with the correct part number; however in conversations with daimlerchrysler, it was only then determined to be an incorrect part. they could only distinquish the part by its vendor manufacturer's casting number cast into the assembly. chrysler verified that this was indeed an incorrect part; and a replacement vent assembly was ordered and replaced. this alleviated the prevous leak. service agent reports his technician could not distinguish the incorrect part from the real part, and felt it was securely tightened, but the apparent clearances and slight size differences allowed the gasoline leak to develop. no leak was further noted with the complete fill-up of the gas tank by the owner. it is noted that the service agent had no special procedure for testing the gas-tightness of the gas tank as he had not previously filled the tank to overflow to check same. this appears to be a deficiency in tank replacement procedure, as it was only when the owner subsequently filled the tank that the original leak was ever detected.*ak

Owner reported raw fuel odor after filling fuel tank. previous tsb #845 recall (o-ring) was performed 04/21/2000 and verified ok. service agent reports vent assembly on gas tank defective and leaking. fix involved complete replacement of gas tank with new model, as present vent assembly is no longer manufactured nor compatible with original tank. dodge post warranty participated for 50% of matl cost of tank only. dissatisfied owner made to incur $302 matl/$100 labor + tax to incur fix. owner requested defective part; dodge service agent refused citing not applicable to extended post warranty offer and need for service rep to account for same. would only release part if owner fully paid for fix. (sounded like a ruse.) owner was forced to accept offer in light of safety concerns. suggest investigation of defective part, as currently held by service agent and why original part is no longer available to accommodate repair making the fix to manufacturer's new designs(desires)? owner has expressed his total dissatisfaction to service agent with no results, short of suggested withdrawal of offer. service manager suggested if owner did not wish to participate in the fix he would suggest that the owner not completely fill up the gas tank. owner notes an extremely close proximitiy of the defective original (and replaced) plastic vent assembly to rear muffler assembly. the replacement tank is also plastic. the original gas tank was reported to be good at time of recall, and at time of replacement. service manager alluded to free replacement of tanks shown to buckle or bow at time of recall #845. similar offer was not extended at present time of replacement of gas tank.*ak

Gasoline leakage from fuel tank. when the tank was full, parked on an incline, or upon braking a steady stream of gasoline would run out of the vehicle. i took the van to the dealer, and despite several recalls for fuel system problems with the vans, i was told my problem was the bleeder value, which was not a recall item. the fuel tank would have to be replaced for $930. naturally, i had to have the problem corrected. has this been a common problem? could this have actually been one of the recall problems? do i have any recourse? thank you.

A crack was found in the top of the gas tank by the dealer when i brought the vehicle in for correction of a fuel system related recall. either they cracked the tank during the repair or it was already cracked. it makes no sense that a gas tank should crack. i have had no accident with this vehicle and it is driven carefully. i asked the dealer if this was a recall item and they said no. however, after having the tank replaced i found out that a new tank has been designed for replacement. why would dodge need to redesign the tank if it was designed properly in the first place? if other tanks have this problem of cracking, there is certainly a major safety problem for owners of these vehicles. please investigate the ocurrence of this problem with these vans. thanks.*ak

This defect in my opinion represents a serious possibility of causing a fire. gasoline is leaking on to the road surface below the car especially when the tank is over half full. chrysler yesterday declined to replace the gasoline tank due they said to the vehicle's high mileage. a fire could easily start by a spark or a thrown cigarette. the local dealer said the the cost to replace would be around $450.00. i don't think i should pay for this as i have done nothing to cause it. the failed part is located on top of the fuel tank such that it is protected from road rocks, debris, or just about any conceivable hazard that would be encountered in normal or even harsh driving conditions. this car is never taken off the hard road. thank you. *ak

I question the need for a new fuel tank i paid for - 594.31 parts and labor. the tank only leaked when it was full, and when i questioned the service rep, he replied that the tank is made of plastic and can crack just from the sloshing of fuel. not a good reason. and now i have a recall for the same problem i described to the service rep. i thought the known problem with the windshield wipers was fixed when the dealer replaced a windshield that had been scratched by impulsive wipers. not so. they still misbehave and i'm told it will be $280 to repair, out of warranty. three rack and pinions right off the bat. i am told that this vehicle qualifies as a lemon - but i like it and just want to be treated fairly as to need for repairs and their cost.

I purchased this vehicle october of 1995, in march of 96 the fuse block had to be replaced along with a multi function switch because the wipers would come on by themselves while i was driving, a contact and plunger kit because the right sliding door would not always unlock when using the unlock button, the fuel tank was replaced because it only held 12 gallons of gas when it was supposed to hold 18 - 20, the tank was installed so that the tank was bowed in the middle and the front door panel was reattached to the door and the left sliding door was repaired because it would not unlock with the key. in august of 1997 the switch for the interior lights was replaced because the lights would flicker, the left side sliding door lock was replaced again along with the rear door latch. in sept. 0f 97 a gear was replaced for the power steering, the left sliding door had moulding replaced because the clips were broken. in august of 98 the stereo was replaced because the treble would fade, the vehicle shut off while i was driving no one could explain this phenomenon, the relay switch was replaced and the rack and pinion was replaced also the multi-function switch was replaced again. in sept. of 98 the car was back in the shop because the air bag light came on. evidently when they replaced the relay switch just 7 days earlier things in the dash started working that had not worked up til that point for instance i was not aware that the chime would go off if the blinker was left on for over a mile. it took 7 days to get my car back because they found out that there were never any screws holding the air bag in the module so as far as i know for the two years that my husband and i were driving this car there was no protection by and air bag. this past week july 1, we were on vacation and we had to replace the transmission to the tune of $l771. the car is back in the shop today (7/6) because it appears that the transmission continues to slip and run at high rpm.please help!!

Chrysler corp notified me to return my dodge van for fuel filler tube recall service. i made an appointment with arrigo dodge, an authorized dodge dealer, to perform the service. after three months waiting, mark norman scheduled my recall service. mechanic number 269 performed the recall service on 6/7/2000. i received my van on 6/7/2000 and proceded to fill up an empty fuel tank. when the pump's auto shutoff engaged, heavy fuel overflowed under my van. i looked under and saw fuel spilling from a juncture of the fuel tube and two connecting lines from the fuel tube to the main gas tank. this has never happened before during my ownership. i immediately returned to arrigo dodge's mark norman to complain. he allabied with ...let everthing seat into place. drive it for several tanks of gas. the leaking never corrected itself and the fumes radiating from the fuel filler valve continued. excuses have continued for 17-months. i have been passed back and forth between arrigo dodge and chryler corp's customer relations for months after i realized arrigo dodge was stonewalling. arrigo dodge also fired my first service writer, mark norman. i went and paid for an independent chrysler dealer to locate the problem area, just to have confirmation where the leak was originating. i have dates & summaries of my honest efforts to resolve this service fault. on 11/8/2001, i was blatantly lied to by service manager, orlando ferrer, and decided to use other alternatives to correct this service blunder.*ak
