Defect SummaryVehicle description: passenger vehicles built with 3.3l engines. the 'o-rings' used to seal the interface of the fuel injector rail supply, return and cross over tubes are not as robust as those used in later model years. deterioration of the 'o-rings' can cause fuel leakage.
Consequence SummaryIn the presence of an ignition source, fuel leakage in the engine compartment could result in a fire.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace the engine fuel rail.
NotesOwner notification began october 26, 1998. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact chrysler at 1-800-992-1997. also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236).

Defect SummaryVehicle description: passenger vehicles built with 3.5l engines. the fuel injection delivery system can leak fuel from some of the sealing o-rings or from hair line cracks in the thermoset fuel injection rail.
Consequence SummaryFuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source can result in a fire.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace the fuel rail o-rings and reinforce the outlet (passenger) side fuel rail. vehicles showing fuel leakage on the outlet fuel rail must have the outlet rail replaced which includes changing the upper and lower injector o-rings. however, if a vehicle is leaking fuel from the o-rings or from a cracked fuel line, the vehicle should be taken into a dealer to have this repaired as soon as possible.

On september 5, 2004, mr. robert galenty of iselin, nj, petitioned the agency to conduct defect investigations of certain model year (my) 1993-1997 vehicles produced by daimlerchrysler corporation.his petition identified three issues of concern: 1) fuel leaking from the fuel injector rails; 2) brake fluid contamination resulting in brake failure; and 3) susceptibility of the vehicle frame to damage while the vehicle is being towed.mr. galanty alleged that his 1996 dodge intrepid had each of these three problems.concerning fuel rail leakage, daimlerchrysler commenced a recall (98v-184) of approximately 722,600 vehicles to address engine fuel rail leaks that could lead to a fire, including those vehicles cited in the petition and the petitioner's 1996 dodge intrepid.on october 7, 1998, nhtsa opened a recall query investigation (rq98-018) to evaluate the adequacy of the recall remedy.that investigation was closed on july 8, 2002 without requiring further action by daimlerchrysler.very recently, on june 9, 2004, nhtsa denied a petition (rp04-001) to reopen rq98-018 after finding that there was no new information that would indicate any basis for reopening it.this is still the current position of nhtsa on this issue.concerning brake fluid contamination and frame alignment, a review of nhtsa's database shows no other complaints on either one of these issues on the vehicles cited in the petition.

Tl- the contact owns a 1993 dodge intrepid. while driving at approximately 25 mph the contact noticed a heavy fuel smell in the vehicle. after stopping the vehicle, the contact opened the hood and noticed fuel leaking from the the o-rings on the drivers side of the vehicle. the vehicle was included in a recall under nhtsa campaign id number: 98v184000 (fuel system, gasoline:fuel injection system). the vehicle was towed to the dealer for diagnostics. the technicians stated the vehicle was included in the recall but only the passenger side o-rings were covered by the recall not the drivers side o-rings. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not available. the approximate failure mileage was 67,000. ds

The quick connect/disconnect that connects the fuel lines to the fuel rail is not holding and is allowing raw gas to leak into the engine compartment, gas fumes can be smelled inside the car, dealer says the only fix is to replace fuel line between fuel filter and fuel rail, i susspect that the quick connect idea is not a good choice for fuel system components since the connector is plastic and gasoline would tend to deteriorate the plastic over time and replacing these fuel lines is a costly $$$ proposition, i will replace the faulty fuel line sections with standard high pressure neoprene/rubber fuel line which should work quite well. *ak

First failure, around october 1997, was leak in fuel supply rail on starboard side of engine. this leak covers the two items from your list, as you have no specific item for fuel rail. leak is worst in cold weather, hardly leaks at all in warm weather or after engine reaches operating temp. have contacted two dodge dealers; they say that they are aware of a number of similar failures, but manufacturer does not underwrite repair. manuals do not list fuel rails as a service item and there is no protocol for replacement of the seals, therefore, we feel that the faulty seals are a manufacturing defect. (?) failure number two, the battery cable positive simply rotted out at the termianal end and lost continuity. manufacturer should have used an insulation the would survive better and longer in the engine room environment. obviously, the conbination of a leaky fuel rail and a defective battery cable is not a happy one. thanks for listening.

Falvey's motors of norwich, ct performed recall 790 on my car in april 1999. for the next year, the car smelled of gas and ran rough. i reported the problem to falvey's and they said the coil pack and catalytic converter were bad. i spent the money and replaced both, but the problem persisted. after a year, they finally diagnosed a fuel leak from the fuel rail/injector area. they would look into it further except at my expense. i looked at it myself and found old gasket material still on the fuel rail they installed, which caused fuel to constantly spill onto the engine. they refused the costs of repairs.
