Defect SummaryVehicle description: passenger vehicles built with 3.5l engines. the fuel injection delivery system can leak fuel from some of the sealing o-rings or from hair line cracks in the thermoset fuel injection rail.
Consequence SummaryFuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source can result in a fire.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace the fuel rail o-rings and reinforce the outlet (passenger) side fuel rail. vehicles showing fuel leakage on the outlet fuel rail must have the outlet rail replaced which includes changing the upper and lower injector o-rings. however, if a vehicle is leaking fuel from the o-rings or from a cracked fuel line, the vehicle should be taken into a dealer to have this repaired as soon as possible.
NotesOwner notification began during january 1999. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact chrysler at 1-800-992-1997.also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236).

On september 5, 2004, mr. robert galenty of iselin, nj, petitioned the agency to conduct defect investigations of certain model year (my) 1993-1997 vehicles produced by daimlerchrysler corporation.his petition identified three issues of concern: 1) fuel leaking from the fuel injector rails; 2) brake fluid contamination resulting in brake failure; and 3) susceptibility of the vehicle frame to damage while the vehicle is being towed.mr. galanty alleged that his 1996 dodge intrepid had each of these three problems.concerning fuel rail leakage, daimlerchrysler commenced a recall (98v-184) of approximately 722,600 vehicles to address engine fuel rail leaks that could lead to a fire, including those vehicles cited in the petition and the petitioner's 1996 dodge intrepid.on october 7, 1998, nhtsa opened a recall query investigation (rq98-018) to evaluate the adequacy of the recall remedy.that investigation was closed on july 8, 2002 without requiring further action by daimlerchrysler.very recently, on june 9, 2004, nhtsa denied a petition (rp04-001) to reopen rq98-018 after finding that there was no new information that would indicate any basis for reopening it.this is still the current position of nhtsa on this issue.concerning brake fluid contamination and frame alignment, a review of nhtsa's database shows no other complaints on either one of these issues on the vehicles cited in the petition.

I own a 1994 dodge intrepid es that has had a series of fuel leaks at the fuel rail/ injector area. the o-rings were replaced twice in prior years. last week 4 injectors and their seals were replace (at my expense) and once again tonight there is a strong smell of raw gasoline. this is a serious fire potential problem and seems relate to the switch to different gasoline formulations required here for summer driving. the car is again going back to the dealership for repairs. *nlm

11/16/1998204/01/1994
My wife and i own a 1994 dodge intrepid 3.5 liter 24-valve vehicle. my wife drives this car every day to transport my son to school. she informed me that gasoline fumes were very stong inside the passenger compartment. i further investigated under the hood of my 1994 intrepid and found that the unsupported front steel crossover tube and the two rear tubes connected to the two siemens fuel injection rails were leaking profusely, depositing fuel all over the engine and puddles on the garage floor. being a mechanical design engineer, (profession), and automotive mechanic, (unprofessional), i commented to my wife barbara, while visually looking at the fuel lines and the clips holding the fuel lines to the fuel rails; i hope there is not just 'o' rings sealing this connection and also the only means of support for the steel cross-over line. i was wrong, this was the only part sealing up the lines to the injection rails. in my opinion, this is a very poor design and extremely dangerous. i went to buy the o-rings at a local auto parts store. i was told that they were unavailable for the 3.5 liter. i then went to my local dodge dealer to purchase the o-rings. they told me you have to buy the entire injection rail @ $189.00 each. to get all 4 o-rings which means i have to spend around $375.00 just to get these four o-rings. when asked why the parts department said that is the only way chrysler will sell the o-rings, which to me is a consumer rip-off to begin with. i took the o-rings to a vendor i use at my place of employment. he matched them up for me and i replaced them. the problem is two fold. #1) the cross-over line is dangling out there only supported by o-rings bouncing up and down with the car every mile you drive. right now with the engine running and the system pressurized you can wiggle the cross-over tube slightly and fuel will leak out of each of the two cross-over tube o-rings. i even installed viton rings to minimize damage due to exposure

This is the third failure in four years. the first repair was done by an independent shop. the second time it was fixed by a dodge dealer. both repairs were done before the recall was issued. when is was issued i was told i did't need to have it fixed again . i was just to send my paper work and bills to daimler chrysler for re-imbursement .which they did. this third time i didn't think it was the same problem. i took my car to my regular mechanic and was surprised to find out that the fuel injector rail had failed once again. i had the work done by him rather than taking it to dodge.they didn't fix it right the last time and we have had several problems with our closest dodge dealer . we have had to take our repairs back because they were not done right the first time. also we have been faced with rude employees and a service manager that told us maybe if we did more business with them we would better service. daimler chrysler has told me that they will not re-imburse me this time because i didn't use a dodge dealer for the repair. do i have any recourse? is this problem with the fuel rail failure on going? will i once again in two years have to have it fixed?*ak
