Defect Summary	On certain passenger vehicles, the floor shifter ignition-park interlock may fail and allow the shifter to be moved out of the park position with the key removed. an inoperative interlock may also allow the key to be removed when the shifter has not been placed in the park position.
Consequence Summary	Either circumstance may result in the vehicle rolling away without warning.
Corrective Summary	Dealers will install a new load-limiting push rod into the floor shifter lever of the affected vehicles. owner notification began on june 14, 2004. owners should contact daimlerchrysler at 1-800-853-1403.

	I have a 94 intrepid that has a lurch when coming to a stop and has problems going into gear when it gets cold. i was told that the seals installed at the factory were faulty and the tsb instructs that new updated ones be installed with the overhaul. also that the tcm (transmission control module) be update from a dealer to correct the cold engagement issue, the one i have now can not be updated and i need a new one. i was hoping to avoid the $2000+ overhaul. i have over a dozen e-mails from others with the same problem and have been on many web sites where others have had the same problems with dodge transmissions. i have not had the car repaird yet because i can not afford the repair yet and have been shifting into nutral before coming to a stop to avoid the lurch. i feel this is a factory defect and have call the factory but they are unwilling to do anything unless thousands call and complain. lmk if you can help.

	Speedometer needle does not move at high or low speeds. dealer says it needs an electrician. please provide more details. *ak

	Speedometer/odometer will nose dive to 0 for 20 to thirty seconds will shut cruise control if on. the headlights will go off. to get them to come back on turn switch on off then back on. *ak

	Dt: the caller received a recall notice concerning the floor shifter. she said that for the last two months she has had to leave the keys in the ignition because the vehicle will not go into park. she parked on level ground and she knew the vehicle will not roll away. when she took vehicle to the dealer they said she might have dropped something in the shifter, and they will not look at it for free, even though she had a recall letter. dealer told her it would be 5 to 7 days before they would look at vehicle. manufacturer has not been contacted yet. *ak

	I am looking for some guidance. my story involves 2 cars. i contacted the daimler chrysler corp. and was blown off. i contacted the wisconsin lemon law. they told me to try and contact the local bbb, local attorney generals office and the office of consumer affairs. the attorney general told me to contact you. i bought a used 1995 dodge intrepid in 1998. in 1999 i had to put a rebuilt transmission into it. that tranny was still going strong when i sold the car in 2004. i liked the car so much that i bought another used one from a friend. she purchased a 1994 intrepid brand new. in 1998 the tranny went out in her car. the car only had 9834 miles on it at that time. she put in a rebuilt. the car was impeccably kept up so i knew it was a good buy to purchase it from her. so i did in 2004. the tranny went out recently. i could not afford a car payment so i opted to put in yet another rebuilt transmission. my problem is that with my first car, the new factory transmission that cam with the new car lasted only 4 years. 'the rebuilt lasted at least 5 years. with the 2nd car, the new tranny that came with the new car only lasted 4 years and the first rebuilt lasted 7 years. how is it that a 10 year old car with only 76,000 miles on it has to have 3 transmissions? this in on average, only 3.3 years per tranny. i feel i should get some compensation for the 2 transmissions that i invested in owning these vehicles. is there any recourse that i can take to help recover some of my expenses or am i out of gas? thank you for your time. karen mitok. jb nm

	The key was not inside of the ignition at the time of this incident. vehicle jumped out of gear, rolled down the street, and crashed into parked vehicle. it was towed to the dealer for inspection. however, the cause could not be determined at this time. *ak

	Multiple transmission failures on the 42le mopar transmission. in this case, a 94 dodge intrepid es. failed at intervals of 60,000 miles. dodge denies any defect. *ak additionally, the steering on this vehicle had multiple issues. the tie rods and other linkages totaled $700+ in repairs.

	On september of 2000 i purchased a vehicle for my wife martha banuelos. the previous owner told me and gave receipts from the dealer where she purchased the car and repaired the transmission twice. the first time on 9/19/1999 with 45,888. the car will stall and will not stay running. the second time on 8/25/1999 with 45,932 m. the car won't shift when cold. a third time i took the car to the same dealer on 11/7/2000 with 51, 627 m. problem, it did not shift when hot. the dealer corrected the problem by changing the solenoid pack. a fourth time the car was taken to the same dealer on 4/4/2002 with 68,147 m. problem, the transmission makes a buzz noise when accelerating, the dealer did not make repairs at this time because on road test no sound or slips were felt according to them. ****dims 11 ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut-over to artemis**** 770789. ak jb

	I purchased my car as a new vehicle on august 14, 1994. on july 24, 1997, when the mileage on my intrepid was 60,715, the transmission failed and was replaced. on february 12, 1999, when the car had 95,964 miles, the transmission was again replaced. the technician indicated that there seemed to be a common problem with chrysler transmissions. this time, a cooler was added to the transmission system in an effort to prevent any further transmission failures. the costs of these repairs were $1,483.11 and $1,430.88 respectively. the total for both is $2,913.99.*ak

	Cruise control light goes on in dash and car just suddenly stalls. this usually happens at all speeds and lately has stalled on highway at speeds in excess of 60 mph. this happens for no known reason. i've had this problem checked by a mechanic and he cannot find any reading on the computer that would indicate any problems. this car was manufactured after a similar recall on this car back in 1993 for a transmission harness failure. i'm wondering if there is anyone out there that is encountering the same problems with this particular model vehicle. it's extremely dangerous to stall in the middle of a freeway while traveling in excess of 65mph, especially at night.*ak

	Transmission froze at 55 mph 1998 replaced still problems???, electronic control module went while in drive at 35mph, front tie rods replaced 2 times within a year, airconditioner went within 4 years, cooling system replaced within 4 years from manufactured date, abs module failed during driving on highway and again in city limits after dealer stressed that nothing was wrong with anti lock brakes i have had this car in the shop for major not minor repairs since the manufactured date at least 15 times and can prove each time. i am appauled that america can manufactur such a vehicle with all the major issues at hand, transmission, suspension,electrical,braking systems,fuel,airbags,structural, i wish there was someone who could address these issues with the manufacturer and get us all restitution. if it means legally or consumer agencies i am interested. i drive with 2 children and during the transmission, electrical and the abs failures they were in the car. i would like some type of a reply from them if at all possible. thank you for the website and the opportunity to be heard.

	The problem is that the transmission downshifts very roughly. the previous owner experienced the same problem and had to have the transmission rebuilt. again it has started and is slowly getting worse as was the situation with the previous owner. i have taken it in twice to be fixed. the first time they said the clutch failed and they fixed it. the second time, they said that the machine showed no fault codes. however, i am still experiencing the problem and it is slowly getting worse.*ak

	This is the second time a dodge transmission has had to be replaced by us. the first time was a dodge caravan-v6, probably a 1990 but i am not sure. mileage was just over 60,000. this time it is a 1994 dodge intrepid, perhaps the same type of transmission at 87,000 miles. my feeling is that dodge has known about transmission problems for over 10 years now and they continue to make cars with transmissions that fail at what i consider unacceptable mileage. to have to pay $1,790 to rebuild a transmission on a '94 car is unacceptable. the person who rebuilt the transmission told us that he does a lot of dodge's and that if they put in a different shift kit this would not happen. *ak (tiresize: 15)( dot number: tire size: 15 )

	It amazes me that there is thirteen or more internal service bulletins and 150 or more complaints about this vehicle's transmission on this site and you have not enforced a recall for the dodge intrepid. i was just told that now that my vehicle is out of warranty and that i must now replace transmission at a cost of $2,500.00. the transmission has been worked on a number of times while it was under warranty. i think you should make the chrysler corporation recall these vehicles and repair or replace the transmissions at their cost. it is a terrible injustice that the consumer must inherit this cost due to poor workmanship. *ak

	2nd transmission failure under 95,000 miles - i would like the nhtsa to get involved with the problem on intrepid transmission failures - i counted 140 complaints since 1995 on your web site alone - other complaints are spread in many discussion forums throughout the internet on the poor workmanship of the powertrain - even the dealer has admitted to me and i see to others in your complaints that there is a problem - while not causing fatalities, this does cause major financial hardship to replace a $3000 transmission evry two years. please get involved and investigate the possibility of a recall! *ak

	The transmission had been replaced approx. a year before we bought it. we had the car approx. 2 yrs. and had to replace the transmission. the car was only 6 yrs. old and had 2 transmissions go bad. both were replaced at a dodge dealer with original parts. we only put approx. 27000 miles on the car shouldn't a transmission last longer than that? since then i have talked to others with the same make and model and they have had to replace their transmission also. what's going on. the dodge people told me there is nothing they can do for me. i feel cheated, transmissions cost a fortune and they should last alot longer than they have. is there any thing i can do to be compansated for this problem?

	Car direction uncontrollable during acceleration, replaced tie rods. vehicle make clunking noise, during braking and steering, dealer recomends sway bar link replacement in front end. transmission shifting eratic, vehicle slow to shift on entering highways causing dangerous situation. transmission also causes vehicle to lurch during acceleration. shiftinh is delayed, but when it does shift there is sudden acceleration. cruise control shuts off intermitently, accelerates or decelerates up to 5mph when set. hood has shut and several other people many times. has not caused injury but is very dangerous. no visibility at night due to horible head lights.

	Transmission skips and jumps, sometimes vehicle won't go anywhere, and loss of power.ak consumer had recall (99v-215) completed on 12-may-2000, recall indicates the possibility of transmission problems that can occur due to defect in the lower control arm. consumer feels the transmission failure is directly related to the recall component failure. the vehicle is experiencing transmission problems after recall repair and would like it repaired at no additonal cost. yh

	Problem occurs when slowing down to stop at a stop sign, car downshifts and jolts the car. when starting up from a stop sign stop, the car lurches forward. this transmission has been downshifting and up shifting prematurely and cause a serious whip lash effect to drivers and passengers. i had reported this problem many times to my dealer and they could not (would not) find the problem. they have just now admitted that there is a problem with the transmission. i had purchased the extended 7 year, 70000 mile warranty package. this package was in effect the many times i complained about the problem. now they tell me the car is out of warranty with too many miles for them to consider fixing the transmission. my argument is that i had reported this proble,m many times while it was under the warranty package and they did not fix it then because they couldnn't find the problem. the same problem has existed for most of the years that i owned this vehicle, and i had complained about this prloblem numerous times. when i talked to chrysler customer relation, they refuse to fix the problem. *ak

	In january, my 6-year-old intrepid (with only 26,000 miles) began lurching when i braked. the dealer initially thought it was the brakes, but then said it was worn seals and gaskets in the transmission. i was told the work would cost $1400. when i complained, the work was done for $700 because of the low mileage. i then received the transmission recall notice, but was told that this was for different work. when i had the car in today and the tires were rotated, i was told that there was a safety problem with the steering - that parts were cracked and worn and had to be replaced. this would cost $600. i had a newspaper clipping from nov. 1999 that described steering problems in my model car and the nhtsa investigation. when i read it to the service advisor, he said that was the problem. i asked why i had to pay for a repair when chrysler knew there was a safety issue, and he said i had to be charged until there actually was a recall notice. i do not blame the dealer, but this is grossly unfair and irresponsible on the part of chrysler. i now will have spent more than $1200 on safety repairs on a car that has been driven very few miles. this is my first and last chrysler. please do the steering recall soon so i can get my money back. thanks. *ak

	Transmission failures (2) since 1994, rebuilt in 1996. air conditioner failures (2) since 1994 compressor replaced 1999. engine removed so the firewall crack(s) could be welded from defective original welding, apparently was affecting the rack n pinion steering.

	Abs module failed at 48,000 miles. also, transmission was unable to shift into 1st. & 2nd. gears, and intermittently would stick in 2nd gar. if this occurred, would have to stop vehicle, and turn engine off to relief. dealer/manufacturer were not contacted at this time. *ak

	Transmission needed to be completely replaced; power steering pump has been replaced twice, steering column has been replaced as well as chips in computer system that relate to steering, abs light will not turn off even though equipment has been thoroughly inspected; when car is started, a buzz comes from passenger area that lasts for 10 seconds; if vent is truned completely off, the buzzing returns; air conditioner compressor failed and all the hoses and vlaves need replaced;

	Front end of vehicle would shake when applying brakes, rattling noise under hood, all four door hinges would sqeak and drop when opening the doors this was returned several times to dealer,and still back doors do not work properly. engine mounts went out, rubber moulding around inside of drivers door fell off 3 times finally they glued it on again. engine check light kept coming on they replaced the sensor even though they didn't know what was wrong, the brakes and rotors gave out chrysler was contacted and they refused to replace rotors because it was not covered under warranty. transmission still slips when applying gas to pedal.vehicle sits and then surges.vehicle is in shop again for loud thumping noise in front end of vehicle possibly engine cradle . contacted chrysler about lemmon law at beginning of ownership of veh and they said it did not apply.

	Vehicle has been experiencing following problems: abs sensor light would come on and go out intermittently/cruise control would not work or engage properly/ check engine light would come on intermittently/brakes would lock up intermittently when applied/ faulty rotors causing excessive wear of brake pads, and vehicle would jerk into gear when applying accelerator pedal. dealer notiied. feel free to provide any other details. *ak

	The 1994 dodge intrepid is a poorly designed car. our car has failed the a/c evaporator, power steering hose, timing belt tensioner, water pump, pulley, timing belt, the electronic climate control does not work - no air from any vents, transmission will not go in reverse when cold, transmission will not downshift to first when cold, transmission will not upshift to 3rd when cold, fuel leaked from the fuel rail, engine is hard to start when cold

	Transmission fails to shift out of second gear, occasionally will not shift into first. dealers all acknowledge it is a common problem with intrepids made in 93, 94 and 95. i am lucky. most failures happen around 40, 000 miles. this is a $2000.00 repair bill. every mechanic i have talked to tells me if you buy an intrepid from those years your are guaranteed to replace the transmission. it is an obvious defect that chrysler is aware of and shou;ld require an immediate recall before even more people get ripped off!!

	Air conditioning blowing hot air. needed to replace freon. air conditioner works for 2 months and now is blowing hot air again! transmission is jerking when coming to a stop and then quickly accelerating. i replaced the head gaskets at a cost of $700 on a car that had only 48,000 miles on it. the gaskets were completely rotted.

	Transmission failed - continually went into limp mode - after repair the shifting is sluggish and unable to be repaired by dealer after three visits. dealer keeps referring to driveability problems suggesting that spark plug wires, spark plugs, catalytic converter, and sensors be replaced. all these items were replaced at considerable expense and the car still shifts poorly with poor acceleration. this is on a car that has been literaly babied with only having 70,000 miles on it in 6 years. transmission problems on the intrepids, concordes, and eagle talons are well known. why haven't these been recalled?!! there are numerous technical service bulletins concerning the poor transmission quality and problems. also a review of dodge's service records would show the high rate of failures on transmissions in these cars.

	I have found many complaints listed for this exact failure on the 1994 intrepids. this to me is a very very dangerous failure, as i was on a main highway when the failure occurred causing immediate loss of power. this could have easily occurred on the capital beltway that i was approaching, where vehicles routinely travel 55+ mph. i am very concerned for my own safety and that of my spouse/children should this failure happen again, and of course i am concerned about the welfare of others. in several e-mail messages that i have viewed service representatives have been quoted that chrysler is aware of a problem. i can make the e-mails and quotes available to you if you so choose. i just had this trans replaced today at a cost to me of $2,000.00. this seems to be the average price according to e-mails. i had no choice but to have the repair done as i depend on my vehicle for daily commutes/transport of children etc. i appreciate your prompt assistance, as i will be contacting local officials regarding this hazard. w. michael purdon, vp, purdon associates inc.

	The original transmission was rebuilt once under warranty at about 26,000 miles. it was rebuilt at 78,000 miles and repairs for manufacturer original parts failure at 82,000, 89,000 and again at 111,000 miles. all mechanics have stated it was a design flaw and poor materials used by chrysler corp.

	The transmission on this car malfunctions after the car is driven over 50 miles non-stop. after the vehicle is allowed to cool it functions normally. the car first starts shifting roughly, then it doesn't shift at all. finally it will not move. i have heard that many people have had transmission problems with this type of car. there should be a recall. i called a service person to discuss the problem/solution. the service person said thath usual solution is to replace the transmission. i talked with a mechanic about the problem. the mechanic thinks that it is either the throttle body or the pump which both can fail after the transmission is hot and has been operating for a long time.

	Low/reverse clutch piston cover gasket is defective, and shrinks. causes rough shifting into neutral when stopping vehicle, and rough engagement to drive from stop. also, on cold days, car will not go into reverse gear until transmission is thoroughly warmed up (10-20 minutes). remedy requires very expensive transmission overhaul. manufacturer is aware of problem (as are most transmission shops), but will not publically acknowledge, to avoid expensive recall. *ak
