Defect SummaryVehicle description: passenger vehicles built with 3.5l engines. the fuel injection delivery system can leak fuel from some of the sealing o-rings or from hair line cracks in the thermoset fuel injection rail.
Consequence SummaryFuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source can result in a fire.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace the fuel rail o-rings and reinforce the outlet (passenger) side fuel rail. vehicles showing fuel leakage on the outlet fuel rail must have the outlet rail replaced which includes changing the upper and lower injector o-rings. however, if a vehicle is leaking fuel from the o-rings or from a cracked fuel line, the vehicle should be taken into a dealer to have this repaired as soon as possible.
NotesOwner notification began during january 1999. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact chrysler at 1-800-992-1997.also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236).

On september 5, 2004, mr. robert galenty of iselin, nj, petitioned the agency to conduct defect investigations of certain model year (my) 1993-1997 vehicles produced by daimlerchrysler corporation.his petition identified three issues of concern: 1) fuel leaking from the fuel injector rails; 2) brake fluid contamination resulting in brake failure; and 3) susceptibility of the vehicle frame to damage while the vehicle is being towed.mr. galanty alleged that his 1996 dodge intrepid had each of these three problems.concerning fuel rail leakage, daimlerchrysler commenced a recall (98v-184) of approximately 722,600 vehicles to address engine fuel rail leaks that could lead to a fire, including those vehicles cited in the petition and the petitioner's 1996 dodge intrepid.on october 7, 1998, nhtsa opened a recall query investigation (rq98-018) to evaluate the adequacy of the recall remedy.that investigation was closed on july 8, 2002 without requiring further action by daimlerchrysler.very recently, on june 9, 2004, nhtsa denied a petition (rp04-001) to reopen rq98-018 after finding that there was no new information that would indicate any basis for reopening it.this is still the current position of nhtsa on this issue.concerning brake fluid contamination and frame alignment, a review of nhtsa's database shows no other complaints on either one of these issues on the vehicles cited in the petition.

Fuel line corroded through near engine. according to dealer this failure is unreasonable on vehicles of this age as the part supposed to be corrosion resistant. vehicle posed great fire hazard as the leak developed right by the engine. other fuel line also shows signs of corrosion although it has not leaked. chance of part failure is impossible to predict and failure occurs at any speed or without the vehicle being used. fuel lines are expensive parts and replacement is labor intensive. owner's cost in this case was $614. manufacturer has been contacted with a copy of the repair invoice from dealer. ts

After starting car on the morning december 8,1999 i could smell gas fumes. i immediately shut car off and examined the engine. i noticed fuel leakage near the fuel injector rail. i proceeded to dealership (central dodge in raynham) and purchased 6 new fuel injectors, assuming that was the problem and the least expensive. i replaced injectors that evening and still had fuel leaking. i had my wife come out and assist me by turning the key so i could see where leak was coming from. almost immediately after stariting the car i saw fuel streaming from the left side of the fuel rail. a fire started and i immediately put it out. after going to same dealership to purchase fuel rail i was told about the recall. they towed the vehicle into their dealership and replaced entire fuel rail assembly at no cost to me. then came the bad news; they contacted me and told me the engine was gone and they are claiming no responsibility because they said i cannot prove the fuel rail leak was the cause of the fire. so i am currently paying someone $3800. to replace the engine and i was hoping for your assistance in this matter. where does the manufacturers responsibility end when it comes to a life safety issue such as this one? *ak

The fuel riser on my 1995 intrepid leaks gasoline onto the engine. consumer checked the internet and found other owners as far back as 1993 having the same problem. it is definitely a design defect and a safety hazard. yet, the manufacturer is not doing a recall and is charging 300-400 to repair the problem. a fire is inevidble so you don't have an option but to get it repaired or stop driving the car until you do so. i think the manufacturer needs to do a recall on this part and repair it for free before someone dies if it hasn't happened already.

My fuel injectors began leaking in november. the smell of gas is so bad that the car can only be driven with the windows down. it is a fire waiting to happen. i have taken it to the dealer twice with no satisfaction. i was told last week and again this week that the problem will be fixed under recall. the problem is that the dealers are unable to order the entire fuel rail to fix the problem. instead they are to wait on a kit that can be used to fix fuel injectors. this kit is undoubtedly far cheaper for chrysler. two dealers told me today that if they even order the fuel rail, the oder will be denied. they have no idea when the kit will be available. so, i'm stuck with a potential bomb and no way to get it fixed. i realize that nhtsa is not an arbitration board, but thought you should be aware at how poorly chrysler is responding to the recall. as you can tell from the mileage on my car, i rely on it for work. i am stuck with rental car charges until chrysler decides to send the parts to the dealer.

Since owning the 1995 dodge intrepid we purchased brand new, these are the problems experienced since owning and the problems being experienced now. we have had steering problems which required the power steering pump to be replaced, also some arm had to be replaced due to the right front wheel wobbling. our electric locks have engaged as if holding the switch for a couple of seconds on the passenger side and the driver side. never was fixed due to dealer not duplicating. our ac/heat electronic controls stuck and would not respond to any commands and constantly was blowing hot air, pulling fuse was only remedy. electronic gauges will not always show correct information ie. fuel level, temp, fuel used, compass, ..etc, turning car on/off will usually correct it. our fuel rails has been replaced under warranty recall, but i still will smell fuel inside. our passenger side air bag is warped. our headlights will not come on at times and even go out while driving. flashing high/low beam steering column switch will usually make them come on. our most recent problem and the state our vehicle is in right now is smoke is coming from the steering column and it is very hot and i believe a fire is trying to start. the car is parked at the location this started at and is not being driven. *jb
