 Dode transmission on intrepids, caravans, and neons have a history of failing and needing to be replaced or rebuilt. my vehicle only has 55800 miles on it all original. even though the car is 15 years old it has always been maintained since it was purchased from the dealer brand new in 1995. i believe that if dodge is not held responsible for the problems then someone can seriously get injured from them. whether it be from the transmission failing on the highway and causing accidents or something breaking while just driving and causing serious injury.

 The vehicle had the usual filter, and fluid changes and began to slip and now the transmission is out. the fluid in it is still clean. can't understand why it would just go out like that. this isn't the first problem i have had. also had to replace the rack-n-pinion on it. the bolt holding it together came out while driving it. *tr

 Dt: the caller had recall 2c45182 work done on august 17, 2005. two days later while driving the vehicle it shifted itself into reverse and stalled in traffic. dealer said she will have to pay to have it towed and repaired. dealer said they wont even look at it until she paid.. she said she had no trouble before the recall work was done. manufacturer said to take it back to the dealer. *ak

 While switching lanes lost control of steering momentarily. consumer had to use force to get vehicle under control. took vehicle to two mechanics, and they said that rack and pinion steering had manufacturing design flaw. *ak 2 independent mechanics stated that the bushings on the steering rack were worn and needed to be replaced, also stated that there was too much play or movement in the entire steering mechanism, however replacement of the bushings would not fix the problem since the play or movement in the steering box will continue to causing wear on the bushing, this problem occurs whenever stopping and turning in or out of a driveway, parking lot, etc, or accelerating after a stop, consumer can hear sounds and it feels like something is kicked out or slips from under vehicle's front end, consumer has complained to dealer on 4 occasions. transmission hesitates when making shift from 2nd to 3rd, dealer stated operating as designed. left front splash shield rubbing on tire making a noise, dealer repositioned splash shield. *slc

 3 months ago it needed both inner and outer tie rod ends replaced. today we went around a corner and the rack and pinion failed. no steering and almost hit a parked car. vechile towed to repair shop and i am waiting to get a estimate. front end problems and steering problems since we bought it. transmission is starting to go and we have had the air conditioner worked on 3 years in a row. we are going to trade it in asap.

 I bought this car in 1995.......it has been in the garage for major repairs so many times i can't count them...but i do have documentation....i called the nys lemon law number but was 2 weeks past the statute of limitations...they told me to get a lawyer......since the statute has run out....fox chrysler has had the car for at least 3 weeks in the last year & has given me a rental car (under my extended warranty) ...i feel forced to sell this car because the warranty will run out may 31, 2001....it has had the transmission rebuilt, the a/c replaced, the rotors were replaced at 13982 miles & the replacements are bad again....they were just turned at 30000 miles...the turn signals, door locks, headlamps (had moisture in them), airbag cover on passenger side was raised & curled from day 1...the tie rods were replaced in 1999 at my cost because fox said that they were not covered under my warranty .....i am looking for an attorney to get this vechile replaced under the ny lemon law....and would like to know if there is any other recource i can take....this is a partial list of the problems with this car that i purchased new . *ak

 The rear seat of my car was smoldering and giving off a lot of smoke and fumes with the exhaust problem. i was very alarmed since the back seat is very close to the gas tank. on the transmission and air conditioner both systems have had to be replced 3 or 4 times and usually about every 50k.

 I purchased this vehicle with the intent on having last through the pay-off. i am very concerned about this happening. at 30,000 mile the air-conditioning system went out completely and had to be replaced. at 50,000 the transmission went out and had to be replaced. a transmission was replaced at a dodge dealer but i was only given 12,000 mile warranty. at 70,000 miles the front-end struts, strut plates, inner tie rods, and other was replace. this front end is still not right as it drifts and has too much play in the steering. many others with the exact same repairs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 There were 3 problems relating to automatic transmission; 1) while stopping at an intersection and then proceding to cross, the car wouldn't go forward. the transmission line had come off and all the transmission fluid had sprayed across the driver's side of the car. the transmission line was fixed at a dodge dealership. 2) two weeks later, while driving 65mph on a highway, the car started to shake and the engine was racing out of control. the transmission kept surging in and out of gear and we pulled the car off the shoulder right before the car wouldn't shift at all. again the transmission line had come off and all the transmission fluid had spilled out. we had another dodge dealership install a new transmission line. 3) a week later, the transmission would not shift into reverse unless the car was shifted into drive then back to reverse several times. while driving the car, it would shug along in and out of gear until it decided to shift into the correct gear. we ended up getting the transmission rebuilt. several transmission shops that we went to for estimates said that they see an unusually high number of chrysler products (even 1998 models) that required the transmission to be rebuilt. we spent $1,500 in having the transmission rebuilt and in time and $ lost to fixing the first two transmission problems. we have taken excellent care of this car and believe that the transmission should last the life of the car . this problem should be investigated, as there are design engineering problems in the chrysler transmissions. *ak

 Transmission shuddered (felt like car was going over alot of little bumps). the symtoms were intermittent during the weekend of the 15th. also noticed that transmission was leaking fluid . took car to dealer and they said transmission needed to be rebuilt at a cost of approximately 1500 dollars. i contacted diamler chrysler after viewing your website and told them of all the other transmission problems documented on the site and diamler offered to split the bill with us. i still think that tey are getting away with murder because it is cheaper to settle individual cases than to admit wrong and recall all the chrysler vehicles with these transmissions. also it is documented in consumers report that a couple from puttstown pa. proved chryslers knowledge of this problem, and got them to put in a new transmission and the couple only paid 371 dollars in labor. i really think chrysler should be made to recall these cars. how much is enough. *ak

 After owning this car for only 9 monthes , it has been a nightmare. after i bought the car i started to hear all kinds of comments from previous intrepid owners as to how unsafe and what a lemon these cars were. this car was constantly failing. on the road, on the interstate, on my way home late at night. all the problems started just one month after i purchased the car. it was on going, never stoppped. unfortunantly there had to be an end to the trouble and amount of money that was dumped into this peice of junk car. the only response i have gotten from chrysler was, sorry. i allowed chrysler to repo it only because i had my back against the wall. i only hope to grab somebodys attention so that futher investigation will follow into these cars. interpids are poorly designed cars and are not safe to be out on the road!

 In your database, i saw approximately 40 odi ids relating to automatic transmission failures in the dodge intrepid, and some vehicles have been repaired more than once. if i had scanned the records for the chrysler concorde and the eagle vision (which are the same as the dodge intrepid), i am sure that i would have seen similar numbers of related odi ids. my transmission was just completely rebuilt at a cost of $1,700 due to automatic transmission torque converter failure. consumers union has noted the automatic transmission as a serious sore spot in their consumer reports publications on this vehicle. the dealer had the complete transmission rebuild kits in stock - indicating frequent need for these parts. i recommend that the nhtsa finally act on this issue to the extent that chrysler corporation be directed to issue a formal recall, and also reimburse customers for previous repairs.

 Hood supports do not hold hood open and it drops down on your head when your working on the engine. torque converter shutter while travelling at highway speeds. they have replaced the torque converter 3 times and the whole transmission once. this is a design defect in the torque converter and has never been corrected or improved by dodge.

 Over several weeks i noticed an intermittent problem with my automatic transmission. it would lunge forward and then default to the limp home mode (3rd gear). the problem became more serious a few days ago, when it reset into 1st gear or neutral while driving. given the more urgent and possibly dangerous situation i took it to my dodge dealer. the transmission must be overhauled. chyrsler is willing to pay for the parts ($950), however i am stuck with the labor ($1000). investigation at another internet site suggests that many owners of '94 and '95 intrepids have experienced a similar problem. i believe that this defect may warrant a recall. it is interesting that chysler is willing to pay for the parts, this suggests to me some admission of a system defect. if it is a known and widespread defect, why am i still required to pay the labor costs to correct it? *ak

 Transmission has broken twice in my 1 1/2 years owning a dodge intrepid. on the first occasion, in the summer of 1998, car began to idle very high but moved extremely slowly when pushing the accelerator. on the second occasion, jan. 1999, the car would begin to move extremely slow when pushing the accelerator. however, it did not idle high. after a few seconds, there would be a forceful kick from the back. the car would then accelerate normally. also, the car would sometimes slip out from the drive gear into the reverse gear without notice. furthermore, headlight switch became stuck and unable to turn into the on position. *ak

 The transmissions in these cars are crap. the seals being used are undersized causing the transmissions to fail. at first you dont even notice the problem but at about 50,000 miles the transmissions start to have trouble shifting into gear, up shifting and down shifting when cold. chrysler is aware of this problem proven by the well written tech. bullitens. cars shouldn't have transmission problems at such low miles. if it was an isolated inccident i could accept it but its not and i'm having troublr believing that i'm expected to pay for shoddy work.

 I have read of many 4 speed cc transmission failures and that fact has also been confirmed with my dealership. my unit is no longer under factory warranty. my unit has meticulously been maintained in hopes of avoiding problems..to no avail. there is a real problem with these 4spd transmission units.they should be recalled! as well as the trans cooling lines and seals leaking! $1370.00 out the window!

 Transmission would not engage right away on cold mornings. took the car to a dealership and was advised that the car needed a new transmission. contacted dodge consumer affairs to complain about the infant failure of the transmission but they did not care and would not work with me. as a result of this i will no longer buy chrysler products and will advise anyone i know looking for a new car to avoid chrysler.

 The trans only works when at low speeds, too much gas and then it starts to slip or has no gear at all. this has caused problems when trying to cross an intercetion and the trans, will kick out when i'm in the middle with oncomeing traffic. the air only worked for a little while after i got the car. now it just blows hot air, and has a funny smell to it. it also every now and then will look like frost or fog is coming out the vents, had to replace an 02 senser, was told there is also one more in the car, and its probley bad have bad gas miliage and smells of gas in the main cab.

 Transmission shudder. engine computer intermitenly will not allow transmission into gear. transmission serviced by dealer. problem got worse. transmission was rebuilt at 21,345 miles, now needs to be rebuilt again at 82,800. chrysler states that the warrantee has expired and they are not responsible. my position is that a transmission should last longer then 60k miles after rebuild. the correct maintainance was done including using the right transmission fluid.
