Defect SummaryVehicle description: passenger vehicles built with 3.5l engines. the fuel injection delivery system can leak fuel from some of the sealing o-rings or from hair line cracks in the thermoset fuel injection rail.
Consequence SummaryFuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source can result in a fire.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace the fuel rail o-rings and reinforce the outlet (passenger) side fuel rail. vehicles showing fuel leakage on the outlet fuel rail must have the outlet rail replaced which includes changing the upper and lower injector o-rings. however, if a vehicle is leaking fuel from the o-rings or from a cracked fuel line, the vehicle should be taken into a dealer to have this repaired as soon as possible.
NotesOwner notification began during january 1999. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact chrysler at 1-800-992-1997.also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236).

The petitioner, philip mcbroom, alleges that there was a fuel leak in the fuel rail, and or fuel o-rings, which caused an engine compartment fire.this event occurred after the recall (98v-184) remedy was performed on his vehicle.he has petitioned the nhtsa to investigate the remedy adequacy of safety recall 98v-184.on august 10, 1998, daimlerchrysler notified the agency that it would recall approximately 722,600 vehicles built with3.5l v6 engines, including the 1997 intrepid.daimlerchrysler reported that a fuel leak could result from deteriorated o-rings or hairline cracks in the plastic fuel rails.follow-up investigatons, rq98-018 and rp00-001, established that post repair leakage complaints would level off to approximately 20 per year and most are not related to the recall remedy.since these investigations, there has been no new information that would indicate any basis for initiating a new investigation.for the foregoing reasons, further expenditure of the agency's investigative resources on the issues raised by the petition does not appear to be warranted and the petition is denied. for details, see federal register, vol. 69, no. 111 (june 9, 2004).

On september 5, 2004, mr. robert galenty of iselin, nj, petitioned the agency to conduct defect investigations of certain model year (my) 1993-1997 vehicles produced by daimlerchrysler corporation.his petition identified three issues of concern: 1) fuel leaking from the fuel injector rails; 2) brake fluid contamination resulting in brake failure; and 3) susceptibility of the vehicle frame to damage while the vehicle is being towed.mr. galanty alleged that his 1996 dodge intrepid had each of these three problems.concerning fuel rail leakage, daimlerchrysler commenced a recall (98v-184) of approximately 722,600 vehicles to address engine fuel rail leaks that could lead to a fire, including those vehicles cited in the petition and the petitioner's 1996 dodge intrepid.on october 7, 1998, nhtsa opened a recall query investigation (rq98-018) to evaluate the adequacy of the recall remedy.that investigation was closed on july 8, 2002 without requiring further action by daimlerchrysler.very recently, on june 9, 2004, nhtsa denied a petition (rp04-001) to reopen rq98-018 after finding that there was no new information that would indicate any basis for reopening it.this is still the current position of nhtsa on this issue.concerning brake fluid contamination and frame alignment, a review of nhtsa's database shows no other complaints on either one of these issues on the vehicles cited in the petition.

I noticed that the dodge intrepid 3.5l engines are being recalled per the nhtsa campaign id# 98v184000. i took a copy of the recall to my dodge dealer because my car has a fuel leak on the fuel rail. i had replaced a fuel injector on the rail in december for a fuel leak, and it ends up the rail is leaking too. the dodge dealer took the car in, with this recall number and told me on 1/7/99 that they do not have any record of a recall, and will charge me to fix the car. the recall was announced on the radio, and i have this nhtsa recall printed out as well. the part they need is on national backorder as well, basically i have a car that if i drive it, i can get hurt due to the fact that they can't fix it due to no parts available and they refused to give me a rental car free while they fix my defective car. i don't understand why it was recalled and the dealer will not take care of it. i sure am not satisfied with dodge's concern for having my car on the road with a fuel leak. please respond to me about what i can do to get them to fix this car per the recall instead of me having to pay hundreds of dollars to fix it. the problem as well is the part is on national backorder and they told me it will take 2weeks to 2 months to get the parts. should a car manufacturer have responsibility to provide a vehicle due to their safety hazard. i can't believe i have to pay a car payment for a car i can't drive, and they can't even fix the recall.

We started noticing a strong gas smell in our car and bad fuel economy. the smell was so strong that it was making us sick after being in the car for more than 15-20 minutes. i took the car to a shop and they told me that it the fuel rail is leaking and the fuel injection o-rings need to be replaced also. the shop cannot get the parts due to a shortage. they said that the parts are only being used for safety issues for dealers first. so nothing is being done to fix the problem. we need our car and it could possibly catch on fire due to this problem and we cannot get it fixed. *jb

My name is myra bahr and i own a 1997 dodge intrepid w/86k miles. i have well cared for this vehicle. this past weekend, i have experienced the engine seized/quit issue while driving 75 mph on the expressway with my two kids. i figured it was the heat; so i let it cool down. started back on our road trip.. which it happened again 10 miles later. mind you; there was a full tank of gas from shell, recent oil change and fuel filter change. one year earlier, i have replaced the thermostat/injection rail for the same problem. i have called customer service at chrysler-dodge but the recall for this year is only with the 3.5 engine; not the 3.3 engine-so they will not pay for the repair at the dealership. thank god my older mother wasn't driving the car; for she wouldn't be able to handle the manual steering and able to get the car safely to the shoulder without causing a severe accident. i just wanted to be heard and share my story w/you.

Dodge intrepid 1997, fuel leak in the fuel rail. *bf the consumer did some research and discovered there was a recall on the o-rings, however when the consumer entered her vin into the database the information came back as the recall already being taken care of. 8-10 months later the engine light illuminated, however the dealer told the consumer the vehicle just needed a tune-up. after a few days the consumer began to smell a strong smell of gas, upon inspecting the vehicle, the mechanic stated the o-rings were leaking. the consumer had no idea it was the same recall she had researched about earlier. the consumer then realized it was and tried to get a refund, however the request was denied because the manufacturer stated the consumer knew about the recall and did not get it fixed. the consumer stated this is the third time she is having problems with the leaking. *jb

This car belonged originally to my brother-in-law as his company car. he sold it to his mother, who, for 2 years, drove it only 1000 miles. she had told me several times that she kept smelling fuel. and, her air conditioner leaked and had to be recharged several times during this period. upon her death in march, i acquired the car. on 7/09/04 i took the 1997 dodge intrepid to dodgeland of columbia to check for a fuel leak. at the time of check-in for the vehicle i sited the recall 98v-184 and the odi resume summary for investigation rq98-018. this car had been repaired in the recall, however the odi resume states there is no time limit for subsequent failures. dodgeland checked the car and stated that the fuel leak was not due to the fuel rail or the o-rings, they said i had a bad fuel injector. i told the service technician at that time that if the fuel injector was bad, i should be having performance problems, and i was not. however, they continued to deny this fuel leak had anything to do with the recall. they quoted a $425.00 estimate for the repair, and stated i should not drive it anywhere. i took the car home and took it to an independent mechanic for repair. this shop found just what i expected that they would find: the o-ring was leaking, the fuel injector was not faulty. i would like the $40 amount i paid dodge to diagnosis this problem refunded, as well as the 375.00 repair bill i paid to an independent mechanic. *ak

I originally received a manufacturer recall- 98v18400 -beginning of 1999 in may of 1999 i took car to king auto dealership to have recall completed. i recently had car towed to the only certified dealer ship on the island . discovered fuel o-rings were leaking to some degree from all injectors. strong fuel smell coming from air conditioner and heater unit. this is my wife 's car and my kids car. this is a safety related defect which substantantially impairs resale value risk of fire plus a health risk to occupants. the service manager before even having a technician analize the problem told me that he had talked to district manager in honolulu that defect is not covered by recall. this 790/ recall was not successfully completed by king auto center. my investigation indicates this is a widespread pattern that should be covered by the manufacture under secret warranties .have discovered that king auto center still to this day does not have the new parts no. for fuel rail assembly. dt

A dealership replaced this recalled part in march 1999, however this same part was defective and i replaced it in december 2000. my question, if this part was defective enough for a national recall and the replacement part failed, wouldn't that cost be the responsiblity of the maker? (chrysler) i bought this car because of the warranty, but after only three years.....it's not turned out to be a very good investment. i'm a single mom, i don't know about cars. i do have routine maintainance done, but that's at the hands of others who are suppose to know what they are doing. i had difficult with allen samuel dealership, here in houston and needed someone i felt i could trust to do these repairs. plus the mechanic i chose came highly recommended and could do the work at night. this vehicle is my only source of transportation to work. no safety defect found in summary. *ak

Please refer to nhtsa campaign id #98v184000. my car was serviced under the resulting recall; fuel rail assembly was replaced in 1999. now for the past several days i have smelled gas. two independent garages stated that the fuel rail is leaking. i went to huffines chrysler-plymouth in plano, tx, who said the fuel injector o-rings were leaking and were not covered by the recall. your online notice about the recall states that both the fuel rail and injector o-rings should be replaced free to vehicle owner. huffines refused such service. this complaint is not only about safety but about a dealership who gave bad service and misled the customer. thank you for your attention.

Recall work completed by manufacturer in april of 99. approximately mid sept. 99 noticed minor gasoline fumes, thought possibly spilling of fuel when refueling vehicle. oct. 3 starting felling nausea and headaches, thought was the flu. by oct. 10th extremely heavy fumes from vehicle even when not on. took to manufacturer, and o-rings replaced n/c. problem is how do i know if this is happening again. i have lost faith in the repair, and am concerned over health of my family with fumes, and possible ignition of gas. how do i know it is really fixed? is there anyway of testing for emission of fumes periodically to ensure that they aren't leaking again. if i take to the manufacturer will they tell me, how bad it really is, or should i go to an independent testing facility? concerned!

*ak

I have 1997 dodge intrepid (3.5 l engine). passenger side fuel rail has developed leak. problem is not o-ring, but appears to be crack. dealer and dodge customer service say this is no problem, is simple wear and tear item. i believe this is a defect issue with the fuel rail and a serious safety issue and should be a recall item. est cost of repair (including diagnosis , multiple accesses to rail) $600.00 (one side only). *nlm
