In 2007 i bought a 1998 dodge intrepid 2.7 l engine....nonetheless the engine blew. the car had regular oil changes and maintenance. it gave no warning that there were any signs of engine trouble. i paid $6995 for the car, it had 67,000 miles on it.....2yrs later at 87,000 it died....leaving me to pay the rest of the loan of $2200 on a car that just sits in the driveway!!! *tr

I bought this car used with about 100,000 miles for $2,000. it's a beautiful car in and out for the price great condition! i've noticed that when i start if up to let if warm, it war extremely loud, but i didn't think it was a big deal since it's cold out and it needed to warm. tonight i was driving on a busy highway when i stopped at a red light and when it went silent, and stalled in the middle of a !@#$% highway at a red light too. no lights came on to indicate a problem. i finally got it started after a few minutes of harassing drivers and got it to a parking lot when it stalled again right when i pulled in. started it again and parked it. checked the oil and it was bone dry. i bought and put plenty of oil in it let it run drove a little and it worked great. drove home when it happened again. its now sitting in town until i have it towed tomorrow. nice car inside and out!!!! dangerously shotty american motor. *tr

I own a 1998 dodge intrepid, it has 128,000 miles on it...oil has been changed every 3,000 miles....i was sitting at a stop light when the engine shut off...it was towed to the dealership where i was told that i needed a new engine...my husband is a auto mechanic, so i had the car towed to my house where my husband checked it out and told me that the timing chain went out, which had bent the intake valves...upon inspection of the block he noticed a defect in the block...the oil return holes are to small and become clogged, which in turn causes engine failure....and engine failure can cause accidents, if it fails at the wrong time and place. *tr

Transmission failure for 1998 dodge intrepid es at 103,000 miles. rebuilt one put in and lasted 30,000 miles. put in rebuilt engine again at 130,000 miles. engine starting to act up again only after 5 months of driving. temperature control not working properly and engine starting to act up again. all this in less than three years. seems to be a major defect in transmissions. *jb

I bought this 1998 dodge intrepid on 1-13-05 from a car lot and within 5 days many problems arise which of coarse resulted in costly repairs. it was under warranty which hardly covered anything so it was out of my pocket a new engine, map sensor, cat converter, major electrical problems and more. i am a single mom and a full time nursing student. this was my first new nice car i kept up with routine maintenance, made payments on time and consistent i have a few payments left but my car is all messed up and in the garage. i don;t have the money for this can somebody please get back to me just to let me know if there is help and to see if somebody received this. *nm

No warning engine blew at 40,000 miles, sitting on railroad tracks with child, had towed. oil change every 3000 miles. problem oil sludge. paid 500.00 chrysler insurance deductible and replaced engine. at 80,000 failed again. oil changed every 3000 miles. oil sludge. replaced timing cleaned out engine and oil pan paid 750.00. started using fully synthetic oil and changed oil every 1000 miles and at 100,000 (60,000 on replaced new motor) engine failed again. cheapest used engine is $2400.00 not including labor. i have had to rent and borrow vehicles while work has been done. will not replace with another 2.7 engine because it will blow because of oil sludge also. someone needs to make this large problem right!!*jb

My wife was on a trip to arkansas with her parents when the camshaft sensor was replaced and had to stay in a motel due to the fact the parts house sent the wrong part. after getting the car fixed and on her way, father in law was driving when all of a sudden the 2.7 engine dropped a rod through the oil pan.. this engine has been maintained by me when it comes to oil changes and maintenance... 3000 miles or 3 months faithfully since i have had this car for 8 months now. bought in october of 2003...the car has 79,000 miles on it and this should not have happened.. i havbe been told by a reputable mechanic in jackson, tennessee where the car is and he has told me that this will be the 5th 2.7 engine he has replaced in the last 6-7 months.. now i am out of one vehicle and probably won't have the money to pay for the repair of replacing the engine with another 2.7 crap engine... i need some help from someone... who do i need to turn to for this????*ak

My 1998 dodge intrepid has had problems from the moment i bought the car. it first started with engine problems and had to have a crank shaft put in the car just so that it would run. i have tried so many times to get rid of the car but i can't because i am upside down in my loan and no one will give me a dime for the car. ever since the first engine problem i have had numerous problems since then. the oil pump went out and i have to change the oil in the car every 2000 miles because it drinks oil so badly. and from every dealership that my mechanic has had to order parts from they say the engines in those cars a so bad. this is the 2nd engine my car has had and it has also had 1 crank shaft. i have 4 children and can't afford to get another car and i can't trade it in. is there anything you can do. *ak

The engine failure is what i'm sick about. we paid the car off in dec. 2002, and we were happy with a relatively new, low mileage car. however, in january, 2003 the oil light started to blink. checked oil - fine. in february had oil changed. pro team told us oil dirty - they did a flush. oil light still blinking! end of march into april car started to blow a little black smoke, progressed to stuttering and stalling. took car to chrysler dealer (five star) first they said something with carburator was gone - fixed $1,l00!took car home, no change(?)back to dealer, then they told us engine (2.7 liter) was shot. needed transportation. had new engine done. paid $5,500 - credit card - no other way. being angry and sick about it ever since.

Engine failure: i had the car for 7 months. it suddenly made a high pitch squeeling noise. i pulled over, popped the hood to see if i could find what was causing the noise. the noise stopped so i drove to my destination another 11 miles. i watched the temp. gauge and the engine never overheated. i parked at my destination and noticed a trail of water and antifreeze. i never started it again. i towed it to the repair shop and they told me that the engine was blown, unrepairable, cost could be close to $5,000 for a new engine. window: the back right passenger window will go down but will not come back up unless you turn the car on and off 5 or 6 times and keep trying the window. i didn't have the money to get it fixed. i figured i could live with it if i didn't roll the window down.

On the air conditioning problem, the bearings in the tension pulley went bad and it shreaded the serpentine belt which we had just replaced along with the entire new engine. about the transmission. a sensor went bad and the car would not shift out of first gear unless the car was stopped and the ignition turned off. after that, as soon as we brought the car to a stop it would again fail to shift out of first when re-accelerating. the engine is the big problem. the oil light came on. my wife pulled over immediately. but the engine quit before she could even get the car stopped. had it towed to a chrysler dealership. the said it had no oil. we changed oil in this car like clockwork. every 3000 miles and we have receipts to prove it. there was no oil leaking. and no blue exhaust smoke indicating it was burning up inside the motor. we suspected build up of engine sludge but dealership disposed of old motor before we could see it. chrysler corporations customer service center treated us terribly. very rude and disrespectful. they said engine failure due to lack of maintenance. we had similar problem with our previous vehicle. a dodge ram that was building up sludge. it was under warranty and we received a new engine. after doing extensive on-line research, i have discovered that this is a very typical problem. and chrysler maintains a cavalier attitude about it. they seem to be telling everyone that it is not a big problem and that each case is isolated. this cost us over $4000.00. and now we can't sell the car. i'm wondering when the new motor will go. it now has 63000 miles. sorry for the long letter, but, i wanted to give you as many details as possible. thank you. ronald w. ault. 989 435-9941.  Engine began sharp rapping while vehicle was operating on the highway. mechanics say the engine is known for sludge problems and needs replaced or repaired by complete overhaul. expense of either is in the neighborhood of $3600 and up for repairs. several salvage yards stated they are glad to get in these cars as salvage because there is such a high incident for this motor to fail. these engines are known for these failures, yet chrysler has done nothing to make this problem right with the consumers. this auto is now useless for me without an expensive repair.

I have found an excellent and informative website against dailmler chrysler at www.daimlerchryslervehicleproblems.com for anyone who would like more information mainly in regard to intrepid, 300m, concorde, lhs premature engine, steering, transmission and other common failures. i have experienced many of these problems myself and dailmer chrysler simply does not care, i could have even been killed in one instance. after owning another vehicle and putting nearly 30,000 miles on it i have not had any of the ridiculous problems experienced with chrysler's dodge brand of vehicles. there is a lot of information consumers need to know that dailmer chrysler does not want you to know about these vehicles and their common problems chrysler ignores, some of which are potential safety concerns such as the defective seat belt design chrysler continues to use and defective steering design and or components that can cause sudden looseness or change of response in steering, which can lead to a serious accident. these guys have been receiving complaints daily about these problems and have been referring consumers to the nhtsa, i hope that in turn the nhtsa will add this to the list of their complaints so others will also know about this. thank you very much for your time. *nlm

I just took my 98 intrepid (35,000 miles) into the shop today due to the oil pressure light coming on at idle. it turns out that the shop owner has seen 2 other intrepid's in the last month with the same problem. after he called the dodge dealership, he let me know that it is a very common problem they are having with these engines building up sludge. my mechanic informed me that the buildup in my engine is significant and that it is in danger of complete failure very soon. the only remedy that can be offered is to have the engine completely replaced at a cost of around $6,000 and is not covered under the dodge/chrysler warranty. this engine is less than 5 years old and only has 35,000 miles on it. i have had regular oil changes every 3,000 miles and have the receipts to prove it. i do not understand how they can expect this to be my problem to fix and after researching it further online i am not the only one in this situation. please let me know if there is any additional info on this topic that is available. *nlm

I bought a dodge intrepid in april 08. it had 53,000 miles, in great condition and spotless carfax. the car started making problems at 57000 miles. it overheated, so we got the radiator fixed which solved my problem for a week or so. after that week, while driving on the long island expressway my engine quit on me, and started steaming when trying to turn it back on. there was no warning of that happening whatsoever. no lights on, no engine overheating, nothing. i had to get the car towed to a mechanic, who told me the engine was broken beyond repair, and we donated the car. *tr

1999 i bought a 98 dodge intrepid. 2000, engine blown from oil sludge at 42,000. i was taking kids to school and car stopped with no warning on railroad tracks and had to be towed. paid $500.00 deductibles at dealership and they replaced engine. had proof of oil changes. 2002 broke down again. the timing chain broke and broke other parts. this cost $800.00. also, i have replace all window motors at least once and twice again on two more. and relay switches. at this point because i paid $21,000 for this car also all the money in repairs. too much invested to just let it go. i started using fully synthetic oil and changes oil every 1000 miles. this was also expensive. i had to try something to save this car. well that didn't work either. 2005 the engine blew again, oil sludge. i has set at the garage until 12/06. i had to borrow a car for the past year until i could fix the intrepid again. now i have paid another $2000.00 to switch the engine with at 3.2 liter engine. i get it back today!! i can not find even a junkyard salvage yard that will that the engine and transmission. that is sad!! i have been told be every mechanic and salvage company i have contacted, that everyone is aware of the 2.7 problems and will not touch one. *nm

I purchased in november 2003 a 1998 dodge intrepid for my daughter. within 18 months this car was in the shop 10 times for engine problems. oil changes were followed according to the manufacturers schedule. at 94,000 miles my daughter was driving with her two small children when the cars engine stopped. thank goodness it was in a parking lot and not on a busy highway. after several calls to different mechanics the consensus was that this is a typical problem due to a design flaw. dodge/chrysler will not replace this faulty engine. this is a safety issue, what if she had been driving on a busy highway and it stopped in the middle of the road before she could get off the highway. i dread to think of what may have happened. finally i had to spend $3600 dollars for a replacement engine and am now being told it could happen again. not only an i out of pocket for repairs but i still owe on this car. *ak

I made a short drive home at approx. 5:45 am when my engine oil warning light illuminated and there was a sudden lost of power and a hard knock sound. i was in the process of turning into my community at the time of the incident. i restarted the car, it repeatedly knocked loudly the next 100 yards to my home. i then had it towed and was told that the engine was totaled. the warning light began to come on the previous day when the car was idling, with plenty of oil in the engine. so i had already made an appointment when this sudden engine failure came to be. there were no signs of this problem until it happened and the only repair needed on the car was a minor oil leak which should not of caused such a drastic problem like this. *jb

We (husband and i) own a 1998 dodge intrepid with a 2.7l engine. we were driving down the road and the engine locked up and the car died. there were no warning signs, no lights came on, no unusual sounds. we have taken care of this car, with oil change receipts and all of that good stuff. we were driving down a main road in the town we live in when this happened and were going around a curve. luckily the two cars beside us were paying attention, because since the engine locked up, the power steering went out, and i wasn't strong enough to steer out of the way, the other two cars did manage to honk their horns and swerve, nearly going off of the road. (i have read and been told by tons of mechanics the 2.7l engines in these cars are horrible). *la

Repairs were done to the engine on 3 occasions, rotors 2 occasions, brakes 1 occasion, control arms (suspension) 1 occasion, steering 1 occasion, & electrical. although i only have 54,000 miles on my car and the engine has been replaced, the dealership refuses to fix the ongoing engine problems. the dealership manager, rod harris, admits it a lifter ticking but insists that it is normal. chrysler gave me an added care service contract that is good through 6/26/04 and to 75,000 miles. plan code is ad675h. they refuse to fix my car. this is the second time, after the first three attempts to fix it, i have been to the dealership. i filed a complaint with chrysler on 1/12/04. also note they still have my vehicle today 1/12/04 because the transmission failed. it's been in service for 5 days. transmission failed while i was driving on 1/7/04. i am concerned with the safety of the vehicle and the engine failing now with my 10 month old daughter. *la

My 1998 dodge intrepid, 2.7 liter engine, with 53,000 miles was making a funny engine noise (no prior warning what so ever). i took it to the dealership, and was told i needed a new engine because of engine sludge. the cost was $6,990.00 and i still owed over $4,000.00 on the vehicle!! unless i could prove i got regular oil changes, there was no recourse. and then they told me because i bought the vehicle used (1 year old) - even that was pointless, because there was no proof the previous owner got regular oil changes!! the more i search, there are so many others out there with this exact same problem. it is an outrage that dodge isn't acknowledging this. there aren't many families that can take a financial hit of $7,000.00! *la

While driving my 1998 dodge intrepid, my oil light came on and approx. fifteen minutes later my car stopped in the middle of the road during rush hour. because the car would not start, i called the police to have them stop traffic so i could cruise my car backwards into the emergency lane. i had the car towed to a mechanic to fix what i thought was a bad starter or alternator. the mechanic determined that the engine had seized up and that i had plently of oil and antifreeze. he said that the oil pump located inside the engine may have stopped working and therefore caused my engine to lock up. *ak

I have a 1998 dodge intrepid with a blown engine due to buildup of sludge. even after providing maintenance records of oil changes every 3000 miles, consumer car care, from whom i purchased an extended warranty, refused my claim. the engine in these cars are known to be defective, yet all cases of sludge are blamed on the consumer. i find it hard to believe that all owners of 1998 through 2000 model year intrepids an concorde did not change their oil, but that is what we are being told by chrysler corp. any good mechanic will confirm the problems in these cars and many service stations will not work on them because of these problems. it is time to make chrysler take responsibility for these defective vehicles. *jb
