Excessive steering play. at times vehicle will go on its own in the direction that i previoulsy turned. it wonders all over the road and it is impossible to steer safely then it takes an extra second for steering to respond. it steers like a boat. no injuries vechile parked in driveway afraid to drive.

I was driving my 1999 intrepid to a doctors appointment. i was trying to park in the parking deck, all of a sudden i heard a loud click. from that point on the car would not steer right nor left. the car would only go forward or back. my mechanic said the steering broke. all my 34 years of driving i have never had this happen before. yes the car is old but i have had older cars than this and nothing happened this bad. *tr

While driving on highway at 75 mph felt loose play in steering and began moving over to the slow lane and as i did the steering completely failed. after i stopped and in the presence of a highway patrol i turned the wheel and you could see that the wheels did not turn at all. complete failure. luckily since i was moving right prior to the failure my car was pointed toward the shoulder and i was able to stop the car safely on the shoulder. car was towed to dodge dealer where i was told the rack and pinion had sheared off. cost of repair was $1600. *ak

Several problems with my 1999 2.7 liter intrepid. first, problems with transmission shifting hard. sent to dealer and diagnostics came back 'within parameters'. told it must be how we drive it. since then, transmission would not shift between 2/3 gears. left me stranded out of town. had to replace the control module twice ($35.00 part). keep a spare in the glove box just in case. second problem, a clunking sound and ticking noise when turning steering wheel in either direction. took to an independent repair shop, they wouldn't touch it. have not had this problem corrected or seen by dealer. however, i have seen many tsb's on your website concerning this issue. third, engine starting making a banging sound at about 126k. had to have the engine replaced (bought a remanufactured engine) at a cost of $5000.00, was told something in the bottom end went. couldn't afford to buy new car and have car payment. only had 6 more payments to go. was also told that this was common with these engines. why is this engine still on the market if it has soooo many problems? *jb

While operating my 1999 dodge intrepid w.bound on a city street in philadelphia i was making a left turn when my steering wheel stuck forcing me into the north bound lane. i could not move the steering wheel until i came to a complete stop. fortunatley there was no traffic in that north bound lanes or i am certain i would have been involved in an accident. i contacted the dealer i purchsed the vehicle from, since the car has only 37,000 miles on it. i was informed that my warranty was up and there is nothing they could do. i would have to have the car towed to the dealer. since i am retired and could not yet afford to get the vehicle fixed it is still in my driveway. my wife who was in the auto at the time, refuses to get back into the car.

In the fall of 2001, we bought a certified used car from continental auto mall. it is a 1999 dodge intrepid. a service agreement on the car was also purchased. the following has thereafter taken place: the timing chain idler broke in march of 2002. continental fixed the car under service agreement. 67 miles later, the car died with my daughter and wife 7 miles from home. it had to be towed back to continental auto mall. we asked what happened and were told that the oil pump screen was plugged up. we asked from what and they said from the fibers from the timing chain idler. from my father's limited experience in mechanic work, the oil pump screen being clogged from fibers from the chain idler meant that the engine was not flushed. so for 67 miles after the timing chain was repaired, these fibers were going through the engine eventually clogging the oil pump screen. the oil pressure must have become so low that a safety switch shut off the engine. we were told that the safety switch shut the engine off so that the low pressure wouldn?t further damage the engine. repairs were again made by continentals shop. until these two incidents, we were very happy with the car. after we got the car back after the engine shut off, this is what we noticed: 1. the engine didn?t seem as quiet when running. 2. it needed a quart of oil the first week. 3. between oil changes, we had to add oil 2-3 times. before it had never used any oil. other than adding oil, we didn?t have any problems until the power steering belt idler broke the 2nd week in august of 2003. our mechanic, john rickman of john?s auto in girard, showed us the bracket from the idler. the bracket is a five-bolt bracket, which had only two bolts in it, and you can see where those two bolts have been working. on august 20, 2003, i parked the car at a flower shop in girard. i came back to the car to go home and the car wouldn?t start.

I was the owner of a 1999 dodge intrepid, that was completely wrecked at 36,000 miles after experiencing sudden loss of steering control prior to the wreck, my dealer assured me over and over that there was nothing wrong with the vehicle although i was very concerned and pretended to know nothing about steering problems with these vehicles. prior to the total vehicle loss, the engine blew up with a rod knock at about 33,000 miles and had to be replaced, the transmission had to be overhauled after it failed, the input and output speed sensors both failed and much more. this is just 1 of 2 defective daimler chrysler vehicles i have owned and daimler chrysler accepts no responsibility. many of these vehicles are defective and do not hold up reasonably. i have never had any of these problems with a 15 year old vehicle with over 220,000 miles on it. i would like to inform consumers that my website against chrysler for ongoing premature dodge, chrysler engine, steering, transmission failures and more is now www.daimlerchryslervehicleproblems.com. we have referred many to the nhtsa and we hope that the nhtsa will post this to refer others to our site who have not yet seen our site. at this website you will see accident pictures and complaints from consumers after sudden loss of steering control. we also have pictures of the common chrysler engine internal oil sludge buildup and damage from timing chains that have broke through these engines after tensioner failures. we also have many premature transmission failure complaints. if you have evidence of these problems, pictures or a complaint to be posted please also visit www.daimlerchryslervehicleproblems.com and find out what daimlerchrysler does not want you to know. *jb

1999 dodge inrepid es: steering is extremely loose, flimsy feeling and over sensitive. steering seems to have far too much play. vehicle usually jerks or sways when changing lanes because of this. steering will also usually jerk when driving over bumps, accelerating or braking. vehicle usually steers and pulls to the lowest side of uneven roads. steering assembly feels like it violently jerks all over the place when driving over railroad tracks or heavily bumpy areas. vehicle is sometimes difficult to control due to really loose, flimsy feeling steering that moves way too freely. front wheels sometimes seem to slide, slip or loose traction around some slight turns at 30+ mph. the vehicle has traction control, not sure if problem is related. vehicle has 17 standard aluminum starblade wheels and standard goodyear tires. steering lock for when vehicle is parked is defective, never works or is not present. i had never had these problems with my old 1995 dodge intrepid and i do not beleive that they are normal. i took the 1999 dodge intrepid es into the five star dealership where i purchased it, had technician drive it, i was told that it handled fine and that some vehicles have sensitive steering and that it was normal and nothing was wrong. it has been dangerous at times, i have to usually keep both hands tightly on the wheel being prepared to slow down when it starts loosing control or i feel the front wheels slipping or sliding.*ak

I purchased my 1999 dodge intrepid w/28,840 miles. from there it had unreasonably been a lemon and into the five star chrysler dealer at least 8 times. the vehicle had persistant steering issues and abnormalities, wandering, play, abnormal change in sensitivity while driving, noise, tire wear. dealer could never duplicate the problems'. the engine blew up at 33,000 miles, had to have replaced. transmission failed shortly after, had to be rebuilt. input/output speed sensors failed twice. abs allowed brakes to lock up twice. tcm and pcm needed updating due to flawed previous revisions. power window failed, front bumper, grill paint wearing. obviously this vehicle was a lemon. the vehicle was finally wrecked after sudden poor steering control after trying to get the dealer to do something many times. daimlerchrysler denies any manufacturing responsibility. i do not see how they can get away with this. there are many others experiencing similar premature problems that should not be occuring as such. i have started a website against daimlerchrysler corporation - http://intrepid.clan-510.org - email address is intrepidproblems@clan-510.org - address: po box 2021 san leandro, ca 94577-2021

1999 dodge intrepid es 34000 miles: steering intermittently is very loose and awkward, steering sometimes is tight like it should be. steering wheel has limped to the left several times while stopped or driving slow and steering feels really strange. when steering wheel is moved back and fourth quickly only from left to center when vehicle is stopped there is slight knock or bump sound in steering. steering wheel jerks to the right during medium to hard or hard acceleration sometimes in automatic usually in autostick. when steering wheel did not function and return as usual a couple times i almost wound up in an accident. vehicle sometimes also sways funny when steering is acting up. the steering's sensitivity and attitude intermittently changes. sometimes there is a slight vibration felt in steering when braking or driving. there is sometimes excessive movements in steering. brought vehicle into hayward auto chrysler-jeep dealership where purchased several times. dealership found missing left strut washer, replaced. dealership seems to never be able to duplicate or find problem. technician (supposed shop foreman) did admit he felt the slight vibration in steering when braking while on test drive but did nothing about it and couldn't really explain it. dealership said they'd put it on alignment machine and check for anything loose when i brought it back for spk replacement. they just told me it was fine with no data from supposed alignment. the car has had many problems since purchasing it with 28000 miles and i feel they are sick or seeing it. i strongly beleive they did not put the vehicle on the alignment machine or check for anything loose since they are sick of seeing it and beleive there is no problem. i have had others drive my vehicle when the steering is awkward and they all verify that it does not feel right. i have test driven two similar dodge intrepids and both of them do not drive or steer like this. i am taking the vehicle to another dealership soon.

As of 02/18/2005 i started to feel a slight binding in the steering when trying to return wheel to center from a turn. it got progressively worse to the point where i occasionally had to wrestle the steering wheel back to the center position. it also feels loose, suspension rattles and i've got 4 inches of play at center. i took it to the dealer and was informed it would cost $1300 to fix. i've never experienced this type of failure in all of the years i've owned cars and think this is just a poor design that chrysler is keeping mute about. i bought this vehicle new and have babyed it ever since. it has less that 60,000 miles on it; i've own other manufacturers that have lasted for a lot longer. this should not be happening to a car that has been as well taken care of as this. iif chrysler fails to act on this problem it will be the last time they get my business. *ak

I had to replace the steering rack on my 1999 intrepid after only 27,000 miles. the steering wheel had excessive play in it, and several times would not go in the direction in which i was turning.the mechanic said that there was nothing i could have done to cause this, or to prevent it. he has repaced racks at 80,000 to 100,000 miles, but never as low as 27,000 miles. he said the internal gears were all worn out. i was concerned for the safety of myself and any passengers in a car that loses it' steering. chrysler did want to assist in any way. they said the warranty was up.they only regreted i had a problem .i cannot believe the lack of concern for such a potentially dangerous situation that is beyond any type of normal maintainence control. this gives me great concern when considering another chrysler product. it cost over $1300.00 to repair.

Steering: i started to feel a slight binding in the steering when trying to return wheel to center from a turn. it got progressively worse to the point where i occasionally had to wrestle the steering wheel back to center position. it also feels loose, suspension rattles and i've got 4 inches of play at center. took it to the dealer and was informed it would cost $1200 to fix. service rep tried to explain that this was pretty common nowadays with the sealed racks and not just dodge. i've never experienced this type of failure in all of the years i've owned cars and think this is just a poor design that dodge is keeping mum about. the vehicle is only 3 years old with mostly highway driving. i'm purchasing a used rack from a salvage yard and having dodge install it for $380 and then i'm selling it. this car is quickly falling apart. air conditioning: started hearing a hissing type sound from behind the dash. soon after a/c did not blow cold air. control module display also stopped working. dodge said in order to fix the a/c they had to repair the module. cost: about $600. i bough a module from a salvage yard and did it myself, saved $500. then dodge recharged the system only to have it leak out over the next several days. brought it back to dodge where they found a crack in the evaporator. replacement cost: $500. power window motor: right front power window started failing intermittently, then stopped working altogether. dealer said that the window sometimes gets stuck in the tight weatherstripping due to dirt and grime on the window and i simply need to coax it by my palm pressing down on it while actuating the button. what a bunch of @*$%! rear right window motor was replaced under warranty, this must be a common problem. dealer wants $200+ to repair. what a racket! i've never had so many major repairs on a relatively new car in my life, and don't plan to ever again if dodge knows what i mean!!*ak

Car started making a noise in the front end. it would only start after driving the vehicle for more that 45 minutes. noise was so bad at times that it sounded as if the front end was going to fall out. shortly after, the steering got extremely loose from left and right. steering is so bad, you can't keep the car in between the lines on the road. took to dealer and they diagnosed it as the rack and pinion steering. there are problems with other intrepids and tie-rod end bushings, however, that is not the case with mine. i got a second opinion from another reputable technician and he came to the same conclusion. i have had several techs tell me they have never seen a rack wear out under normal conditions unless the part was manufacturers defect. i have contacted dodge and they will not stand behind it because the 3 year warranty is out. if the part is defective, how can they not stand behind they product or be held responsible? the cost of the repair is $1200.00. because of safety for myself and my children, i can not drive the car until i have the money for repairs. just a note, i financed the car for three years and it won't even be paid for until december of this year. it's ashame that something like this can happen on a car that only has 50,000 miles and less than three years old. thank you in advance for any help you can give me.*ak

The first time we took the car into the dealer, they could find nothing wrong. the second time we took it in, and only up david's insistence, were they then able to diagnosis the problem. it took them 45 minutes of drive time to ascertain the problem. then, despite a drought of 30 days, they had to wait to fully diagnose the problem as it had begun to rain, and apparently the final diagnostic test had to be done in the dry weather. then only the first part of the problem was diagnosed. at this time, david provided them with numbers of the technical notices that they then provided us. no safety defect. *ak

1999 dodge intrepid es: 11/07/01: while driving vehicle down city street and after slowing down to about 10mph while preparing to make a turn, easing hands off steering wheel while waiting for traffic, steering wheel went limp to the left. steering control became extremely poor. brought vehicle home for further inspection, when steering wheel is turned quarter turn to left, left wheel remained straight. steering became very awkward and difficult to control. vehicle previously brought in, technician could not duplicate however found missing bolt or washer from lower left suspension control arm and replaced. steering control improved after. after driving vehicle as normal for only about one week before, this second steering related failure occurred. vehicle steering never felt right in first place even prior to both failures. steering has always felt loose and flimsy. i have always been concerned. technician drove vehicle at time and stated it was normal. my vehicle is again at the dealer overnight. service adviser asked me did you hit something? when i brought it in 11/08/01. absolutely not. i feel that they think i am causing these problems somehow or something. i am very careful and i am a good driver. i am once again greatly inconvenienced and without my vehicle. i am almost having to bring my vehicle in to the dealer for some type of repair service every two weeks. at 33685, my engine blew up and has been replaced, transmission failed and overhauled, tourque converter replaced, more transmission problems, speed sensors replaced, speakers failed and replaced, speakers failing again, component fell off left lower suspension control arm, steering failure, steering failure again. again, just 33685 miles. isn't there a lemon law? update: as of 11/08/01 1:15 dealership told me that they could not duplicate the steering problem. the technician sounds very defensive and i could here him in the background yelling that there is nothing wrong with that vehicle.*ak

While driving excessive movements occur within steering wheel and column. also, after vehicle is parked steering wheel does not lock up. *ak within first 2 months of ownership, engine light illuminated. every hose and wire under the hood had tape on them, dealer stated that every vehicle came from the manufacturer like that. consumer questioned why the steering wheel panel would not snap or stay in place, dealer could not answer that question. *slc
