After starting my car, i attempted (without success) to shift out of park. the transmission shift interlock lever (as chrysler calls it) had broken and locked the shifter in park. i fortunately had tools in the back and was able to disassemble the center console and get the car moving again. i was told by friends that chrysler had issued a recall for this problem, and was forwarded a copy of chrysler's customer satisfaction notification k39, which describes exactly what had happened to me. i took the car to the dealer for repair, and was told my car was not covered under the recall. i am still trying to get chrysler to cover the repairs, as it is a seemingly very common issue with the lx platform.

Car will not shift out of park. when you depress the break pedal, there is a spring attached to a clip that moves in order for you to be able to shift out of park. the clip usually breaks (about 50-60k miles) and then you cannot shift out of park. you have to manually press a button at the front of the shift box in order to be able to shift out of park. this is a common occurrence on chrysler and dodge cars. i also have a 2008 chrysler pacifica and the same happened. this is a very common occurrence. this should be a recall. it affects various chrysler/ dodge cars different years.

Had complete transmission failure driving on highway at 50 m.p.h. engine light came on followed by loud high pitch noise from engine compartment. car jerked to a full stop. tried to move shift selector to get car to move, no help. disconect battery to reset system. able to get a gear to get car 2 miles to home. have car towed to shop. 7days later, and $3800.00 out of wallet, have new transmission. 63,000 miles and tranny fails? got to be kidding me!!!! this seems to be a problem for dodge. car should be declared a lemon so people can recover some of the out of warrenty cost!!!!!!!!!

I had the exact same experience as documented below - i found this on your web site and decided to add my complaint to the list. my 2005 dodge magnum would not shift out of park. it has 77,854 miles on it. i was stranded in a culver's restaurant drive through, obstructing their business. i could not move my running vehicle. this is a widely known issue, and chrysler even issued a customer satisfaction notification k39 (www.chrysler.com/webselfservice/pdf/k39.pdf) directly related to this exact same problem. i went into the dealer to get the expected repair, and was also told my car didn't fall under the recall and thus wasn't covered. they offered to fix it for $450. i said no. i contacted chrysler's customer assistance hotline, and eventually they offered to fix it if i pay a $100 co-pay. i also rejected this offer. the part that fixes this problem is sold by napa and another online company because the problem is so widespread. forum posts everywhere mention this problem. google pink thingy. it is the part that breaks inside the shifter - called the transmission shift interlock lever. this is a safety concern. once the pink thingy is broken, you have to remove it in order to drive your vehicle. now, the vehicle can be moved out of park without pressing in the brake pedal! this is a horrible safety concern if you have kids! chrysler must expand the recall to cover all the other cars supposedly not covered by the k39 recall! the contact owns a 2005 dodge magnum. the contact stated that the shifter would not shift out of park. as a result, the contact could not operate the vehicle. the contact noticed the recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number 2d (power train:automatic transmission:lever and linkage:column shift). the dealer informed the contact that the model year of the vehicle was not included in the recall.

My car is stuck in park and it appears it will be the same problem as many other folks. the geico customer service person even said many cars were being recalled because of this plastic piece that was being changed to metal. apparently, many are breaking down! i will never by another dodge.

On march 19, 2011, i was cruising with some friends of mine through belton, tx. as we were driving along, the malfunction light came on in my car. i was wondering what was going on. i pulled the car over to the side of the road and turned it off. i waited a few seconds and then started the car again. i placed the car into drive and continued on. as i was driving along, i was lightly pressing the accelerator with my right foot. you can hear the engine revving up but the car wasn't moving. i pulled the car over to the side of the road again and turned it off. i waited a few more seconds and started the car again. when i placed the car in drive and pressed the accelerator the car didn't move at all. i then tried the car in reverse. again the engine was revving up but the car wasn't moving. i called a tow truck and had it towed to a dodge dealership. upon inspection by the mechanics, the torque converter went out and spread metal through the whole transmission. i had this car a little over a month with 56,980 miles on it and now this happens. this is ridiculous!!!!! with the car in the shop i have no car to get back and forth to work. i feel like i have been robbed!!!!!!!

My 2005 dodge magnum's gear shift was stuck in park and would not allow me to operate the vehicle leaving us stranded away from home. it cost over $600 to repair. a check of the internet shows this has happened to many others and thus is probably a manufacturing defect that dodge should correct. *tr

The car stalls on turns. this has happened several times over the course of a month. found out on june 12, 2008 that dodge has a service bulletin out to update the computer to stop the car from stalling! when were they going to tell the customers after we have an accident! i am just lucky that i haven't been hit from this stalling problem. this is the 4 recall of something on this car and i am very sorry that i ever bought this dodge magnum. *tr

Recently bought a 05 dodger magnum on dec. 13, 2005 and have been back dec. 14,22,23,26 for alignment my key transmitters gave out the rear window stopped operating at these times the car was serviced and problems still occur. have been back to the shop jan. 17 and a few more times since then for the same reasons only now my key still won't work but won't go in keyhole either the air bag light comes on while driving. it is in the shop now and has been there since saturday i cannot continue to pay for a car that me and my children are not safe in. i have called the 1800 # for dodge and am waiting for a response i am also making a complaint with the texas attorney general and also the txdot motor vehicle board since the bbb didn't want anything to do with this complaint. these problems are recurring problems that the dealership will not acknowledge i have tried to give them a written complaint but they would not accept it as to there attorney did not write it i am not an attorney just a consumer why wouldn't they accept my letter i have it here along with all work orders and still no help. the letter was written on dec. 26 and was supposed to be taken when the car was put in the shop so they can see i am not going to be pushed over to the side and that's what has happened the car salesman lied from day one come to find out after i made the complaint with bbb he was terminated for drug use. great now we are buying cars from liars and the mangers of this car lot wont acknowledge me or my problem he sends a car salesman to me i don't want to discuss the problem with a salesman i want an owner a manager or even the manufacturer but no they hide. thank you for letting me complain on this website maybe it will help others to not get a magnum they are dangerous and dodge doesn't care at our expense. *nm

2005 dodge magnum with shifting problem will not release from park position.
05/31/2010108029
On 5/31/2010 i drove our 2005 dodge magnum 2.7 engine to the mall with my daughters. upon leaving the mall we entered the vehicle. i then started the vehicle and proceeded to place the vehicle in drive. the vehicle would not shift into drive. i found the override switch and it did not work either. we ended up have to call tow truck and my children and i had to find transportation home. a mechanic was able to look in the gear box and he pointed out the there is a design flaw which allows the shift piece to lock itself in place causing the vehicle to lock itself in the park position. he was able to rig the vehicle so that it can be driven but only if i don't put it in park. which means i must park the car in neutral and make sure the emergency brake is on.

Car would not come out of park without having to playing with brakes, then later escalated to it having to be turned off and on several times. took it into dealer several times and they would adjust something and say it was good. finally after warranty expired i took it in again and they found the problem. solenoid was failing and they charged $350.00 to replace it. this is / was dangerous because it could easily strand you someplace and in my case standard me once at a military check point for 20 minutes. *tr

My 2005 dodge magnum sxt has been in and out of the shop for over the last 50,000 miles. i have gotten all kinds of reasons why my transmission shudders and shifts hard into most gears. on 7/26/08 i couldn't take it anymore, i asked them to just fix the problem that could not be found over the year and a half. it was finally decided that i need a transmission rebuild. the reason for the problem, no one knows. i was also told this is an isolated incident, which is not true based upon all the recent information i have found on the internet. *tr

Vehicle: 2005 dodge magnum r/t with hemi engine with approx. 76,000 miles (car put into service in late spring '04). i was driving on the highway and all of a sudden the car started whining -- like it was in the wrong gear. i pulled over, couldn't hear anything and got back on the road -- everything sound okay. the next morning, after driving for about 1 mile, the same thing occurred -- i was going about 55-60 miles per hour. after i put the vehicle in park and back into drive, everything seemed to be okay. the next day, the engine/transmission light came on for a few minutes and the car again sounded funny, but now if i slowed down or stopped the vehicle (like for a stop light), the car sounded as if it was still in fourth or fifth gear when i put on the gas. i took the car into the dealership immediately and was informed by the dealership that the transmission wiring harness was so burned up that technicians could not get a read out from any of the associated computers to determine what the error codes were relating to my transmission/engine. i was also informed that it could not be determined what caused the harness to melt the wiring. chrysler refuses to explore cause or to pay for repair. i am concerned that this could have been a disaster and i just got lucky before the vehicle caught on fire. *tr

I bought a 2005 dodge magnum on april 9. on april 15 i had to have it towed because the check engine light came on while stopped at red light. when i took off the car was sluggish and would not change gears. the car was stuck in second gear. the dealer had the car from april 15 until april 29. they never did explain what caused the problem. i can't tell you what all they replaced because my car is in the shop now. this happened in june july and august all under the same circumstances. i contacted chrysler and a man named larry mcclain contacted me. he was in touch with the dealer every time they had the car. he always returned my call until this time when i said the car fell under the nc lemon law. each time the dealer has had the car it was something different replaced. i was told the third time that a service bulletin had been issued because moisture could build up in a solenoid in the transmission and cause it to fail. this is what they replaced the third time. this time i have no idea because no one will call me back. all i was told today when i went by there was the part they replaced didn't fix the problem. the dealership is anderson's in waynesville. i bought the car at thomas hll burgin in kodak tn and i have tried to contact the general manager gene morris but he will not return my calls either. no one will help me.*jb

2005 dodge magnum - transmission failure 2 times in 1 week. known issue with dodge - service bulletin issued. transmission was repaired as per bulletin - picked up car from dodge repair, jasper dodge, jasper alabama, drove 115 miles with 3 year old and 7 year old in vehicle and transmission shut down doing 70 mph on hwy 78. could have been fatal. since this was a known issue and since it appears that their service repair failed to resolve problem - i personally feel the vehicle should be recalled before a fatal accident occurs. at 70 mph vehichle just lost all power. had i been in a major metropolitan area, i may not have been so lucky.

Repeated failures of the wiring harness related to the interior tempature controls, the wiring continues to melt within 5 miles of each repair. the vehicle is now waiting for the fourth service appointment to again attempt to repair or replace this wiring harness, i am fearful of having a fire start in the interior of this vehicle. i have also been seeing airbag failure warning lights, i do not know if these items are related, i do not know if this can cause unexpected deployment of the airbag system. the vehicle also has harsh and or premature shifting while driving.*ak
