My abs lights came on over the course of the last year 5 different times and went out without repair work. the lights finnally came on and would not go out. i replaced the abs controller without issue, however i am the curious type. i opened the controller box to examine (post mortem if you will) and found a classic case of non-lead solder tin whisker groth shorting out several points on the board. the links below are several pictures of the tin whiskers that are classic in non-lead solder. the links below the pics are some details on tin whisker info. http://i403.photobucket.com/albums/pp120/bigjim195944/dsc02608.jpg http://i403.photobucket.com/albums/pp120/bigjim195944/dsc02609.jpg http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/xplore/login.jsp?url=http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/iel5/4147209/4141004/04147278.pdf%3fisnumber%3d4141004%26prod%3dcnf%26arnumber%3d4147278%26arst%3d398%26ared%3d403%26arauthor%3dsosiati%252c%2bh.%253b%2bkuwano%252c%2bn.%253b%2bhata%252c%2bs.%253b%2biwane%252c%2by.%253b%2bmorizono%252c%2by.%253b%2bohno%252c%2by.&authdecision=-203 http://mae.pennnet.com/articles/article_display.cfm?section=artcl&article_id=238657&version_num=2&p=32

The safety brake interlock that is part of the shifter broke, as i found out from tow truck operator and 2 dodge service writers this is a very common problem, and when this safety part brakes you are stranded for it wont shift out of park. *tr

 1. vehicle began to exhibit symptoms of gradual brake failure, vibrations/shimmies during braking, strange noises while braking, extended stopping time, and the abs light would come on sporadically. the vehicle has approximately 42000 miles, is 3 years old, and is still under warranty. 2. took vehicle to repair shop, advised braking system is not covered by warranty, but that rear rotors were ground down to point of no return and that front rotors were rusted/corroded beyond repair. mechanics advised that all brake system components needed replacement due to possibility of system failure. over $600 in replacement/repairs to a system that at most should have only needed routine brake pad replacement. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 dodge magnum. while driving approximately 30 mph, the steering wheel loosened and the interior lighting became very dim. on occasion, the contact smelled a burning odor inside the passenger compartment. there were no warning indicators prior to the failures because the warning light indicators have never worked since the vehicle was purchased. the vehicle would start roughly from time to time. when the contact depressed the brake pedal, the contact heard a loud noise underneath the vehicle. in addition, the vehicle shutters when proceeding to turn, the air conditioning unit is not working properly, and the transmission hesitates intermittently. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer and they stated that the steering failure was related to the front suspension. the mechanic replaced two control arms and tie rods. a diagnostic was performed and the mechanic stated that there was nothing wrong with the vehicle. the failure mileage was 20,000 and current mileage was 23,000. updated 07/08/08. *bf there was a loud clicking noise when braking. the vehicle was hard to start and when it start it would stall. the transmission make a shuttering noise. updated

Dt*: the contact stated that after 200 to 300 miles of freeway driving, the vehicle appeared to be shutting down but would not allow the contact to accelerate. when the contact drove the vehicle on the freeway about 2 to 3 months later, the vehicle also idled up and would not allowing the vehicle to accelerate. this only occurred during highway driving. the vehicle has been driven to work daily without incident. the speed difference was 75 mph on the freeway versus 45 mph to go to work. the contact expressed that the problem may be caused by the difference in speed or the increased in mileage. both incidences occurred after 200 miles of driving. the dealer test drove the vehicle for 20 miles and ran a diagnostic test but could not find the problem. the contact expressed concerns for safety. the vehicle's brakes were also a concern. since the vehicle was purchased, the brake warning light has been illuminating. when the emergency is released, the brake warning light turns off, even though the emergency brake was not previously engaged. there was also a terrible squealed when the brake pedal was depressed. this has occurred since the vehicle was purchased. the dealership was alerted of all of these problems but they have offered no resolution.*ak

Consumer complained about brake problems. when applying the brakes they will make a grinding noise, and will not stop the vehicle adequately. when taken to be serviced it was determined that the cause of the failure was due to the brake pads slipping on the rotors.*ak *nm
