Peeling paint on my 1995 dodge neon. i am on my third transmission, replaced air conditioner because of smoke under hood, brakes, rotors, fuel leaking, valve cover gasket, head gasket, no oil in engine had it towed. i also in the time i own my neon i have had all kinds of problems. after replacing all this i only had one recall sent to me on the steering coupler. i had that fixed at the dealer. but, i haven't had any other recalls sent to me. 2 transmissions and alot of money spent on a lemon. *tr

The brakes on the car are just terrible. i bought the car in 2002, it was a 1995 neon dodge(best i could buy back then). but in less than a year since i've had the car i've had to have the air conditioner fixed one time, the paint is basically peeling off by itself, but the worst part are the brakes, i've had them changed three times in less than eight months. once i almost got in car accident because they failed on me. since i bought it in a small local dealer shop much could not be done, but i am looking foward to getting a better car with better safety features.
02/15/200362000
The car leaks water from somewhere. when it rains the backseat floor fills up with water. there are no water trails running down from the windows so i don't know where the leak is coming from. the air conditioning has finally died completely - it has been smelling musty for quite some time. the windows roll down by themselves. if you go over a bumpy road or just drive for any length of time the windows start creeping down. after every drive i have to go around the car and make sure the windows are rolled up tight.

I am really concerned with the way chrysler corp. is handling the head gasket problems on the 95-98 neon's. so far my head gasket has been blown. most of the dodge neon 95 -99 have head gasket problems resulting in oil lick and burn of fuel. i have to replace the head gasket, which will gost me about $1500.00. i also have noticed the poor crash results on the neon 95. which can result in a very seroius injuries.

2 weeks prior to reported incident vehicle had a coolant leak. garage found that the coolant resevoir had split and replaced it. on the 9th march my wife drove the car and dropped a college of to pick up his car at a garage. when she restarted the vehicle and proceeded to drive it she noticed that the engine did not sound right. shortly after the car started to wobble, the engine check light came on and the temperture gauge started to climb higher. she arrived home, i rang the garage, told them of the symptoms and was told to bring the car in. on starting it up i noticed a lot of blue grey smoke come out of the exhaust. the vehicle drove with no problems to the garage. subsequent inspection of the engine showed a coolant leak, when the head gasket was taken off there were 2 cracks on the engine block. the estimated cost of a temporary repair is $1000, but there is no guarantee how long the repair would last. the only other option was a new engine which is out of the question. i cannot understand how this problem could occur with only 76k on the clock. the vehicle was purchased used with 45k on the clock in september 1997. since then it has been serviced according to the manufacturers instruction, with an oil and filter change every 3 months.*ak

Engine began hesitating while traveling 60mph, check engine light illuminated & then engine stalled. took vehicle in to dealership. engine disassembled & revealed head gasket failure due to excessive pitting on head and block water jacket port. informed by dealer this is a common problem, and i visually saw two other engines open on their workbench with the exact same pitting. dealer stated recall should be issued for this problem. complete engine replaced along with throttle body, control module, battery, ignition cables. received vehicle after two month wait. after driving 23 miles, while on freeway, check engine light illuminated followed by engine hessitation and stalling. vehicle brought back to dealer and is still in the shop (3 weeks). dealer reports unknown cause for problem. attempting to replace catylictic converter.

Vechicle overheated , was towed to nearest chrysler service center, replaced thermostat. 6 wks later overheated again towed to dealership again, was told it had a cracked head gasket they repalced it. six wks later car stalled while driving 55 mph on interstate again towed dealership could not find a reason for this. 3 wks later same problem again towed this time they said a coil wire was loose.no other problem was found same day i picked up the car it again stalled and had to be towed this time they said some idle steps were out of sync they should have already known this since i just got the car back that day. every time the car was in the shop they could find nothing wrong so they say, i left the car for several days so that a computer co-pilot could be installed and the mechanics could monitor the problem as it happens. this produced no info . the car has run all winter but now that warm weather is here the problem has started again. the car had to be again towed on 3/8/00 still no satisfaction as to why this is happening. have spokken to several representatives from chrysler warranty and manufacturing divisions concerning this and they have on numerous occassions been very rude. the last straw occurred on april 14,2000 while driving to find the exact location of a very important job interview the car broke down 2, i was no where near a phone and could not call for help. i sat in the car for 1 hr tried to restart the car it started but i couldn't trust the vehicle to continue the trip. i had to turn around and head back home , i was driving back home and it stalled again i waited another 1/2 hour it started and i prayed all the way home i would make it safely. each time i have had the car towed i have had to pay $50 as my deductible on my extended warranty and each time they said they couldn't find the problem. i feel very upset and disappointed to think i am paying for such an unreliable car. i will never buy another chrysler product. *ak

My car has had a problem with overheating since i had it; but the service department at the dealership wpuld always say it was the thermostat when it wasn't. i changed the thermostat three times with the same problem. when the warranty ran out, i was told all these problems with the car that was existing before it ran out that would have been covered. the car has been leaking oil and smoking under the hood ( not exhaust valves) but i am told the head gasket blew out, and that this happened with alot of neons. also the rear main seal leaks right around 60k miles which is when i started having oil problems. my car overheats in warm weather ,mostly when i am stopped at a light or in traffic and i have to cut the heat on until i start moving. i thought it was a fan malfunctioning, but again, the service department said it was the thermostat, which it wasn't. this has been happening since i had the car. if this happens with alot of neons i think this should be remedied by the manufacturer. *ak

Vehicle drives from approx 8 miles before check engine light comes on. then after that the engine sputters and stalls while driving down the road. after several minutes of waiting the vehicle can be driven for a few miles then stalls again. after sitting all night vehicle can be driven for a short distance. oedb2 code reader said cylinder 1 misfire.. replaces spark plugs, wires, fuel filter, checked coil. everything seams to be working fine. vehicle can be ran at idle for very long time with no complications. pcm is bad.... their is a recall in effect but my vin doesn't match up. see recall 94v-033.. been going on for quite some time now. and after ruling everything out it is the pcm... i believe the recall should be re opened to include last 8 vin code st356500. *nm

I own a 1995 dodge neon and it has a major headgasket oil leak that a mechanic diagnosed. the headgasket leak has been getting worse and this is a major problem because i am adding a quart of oil every three days. the entire bottom of the engine is covered in oil. i checked the nhtsa defect investigation reports and many consumers have complained about this serious problem. every time i drive there is a strong smell of burned oil. on 12-15-2003 smoke started to come from the engine. i am very worried that this might start an engine fire if the car gets very hot. i have checked various automotive websites and in one site a dodge owner mentions that his mechanic told him that a customers dodge neon had an engine fire. i contacted a local dodge dealer and they said that they could do nothing about it. this is an obvious design defect that is also a safety risk not only of engine fires but also engine stalls due to low oil levels. there is also a problem with the brakes making strange sounds. *la

This problem with the head gasket appears to be widespread in the neons. although dc has not admitted to a faulty part they have sent out several technicial bulletins on how to install a new gasket and have paid for the repairs in cars under 50000 miles. on my car the head was so pitted that dealer could not replace the gasket and expect it to seal properly. i do not think this is the fault of the dealer but a manufatures defect in the head itself which lead to the gasket leaking. although my dealership offered to pick up the cost of the head on a goodwill warrenty i believe the entire cost should be picked by dc since they are aware of this defect. as it stands now, after calling dc customer services they have not made a final decission on what amount to pick up for the repairs. i have diligently maintained my car since purchasing it and do not feel they are justified in asking me to pick up any of the cost on something clearly the fault of the material and the manufacturer. *ak

2nd failure of head gasket. 1st failure occurred at 19k miles in 1996, repaired under warranty. recent failure at 71k, repair cost $600. car driven 5k to 10k miles/yr. past 2 years. seems obvious to many (including mechanics) that the original head gasket is defective and that's why it was redesigned in '1998 or '1999. our car now has the redesigned gasket. i'm not sure i would be submitting this complaint if this was the 1st time the gasket failed or if the car was driven hard and had high mileage. why are consumers continuing to get stuck with high repair bills on a defective part? it's troubling that the dot has not been more active on this problem, but i realize there are other issues that pose greater threats to driver safety.*ak

Since the purchase of my neon in may '95, i have had nothing but costly problems. this past year, alone, the repair, towing, and car rental expenses have exceeded $5000.00. this car is costing me a fortune to maintain, as these are major components that are malfunctioning. the items i have registered complaints on are just a few of the items i am having problems with. in just over a year, i have had to have a head gasket replaced, my air compressor seized, almost resulting in a fire, my throttle body had to be replaced, they still can't determine why my brakes squeal constantly. although i have heard that this, among other things, is a very common and dangerous problem with the '95 neons. my my engine controller had to be supposedly updated, my engine skips, but the dealer says nothing is wrong with it. my warning lights don't work, with these problems, you would think that you would have some kind of warning. and now, i have had to replace gear shift cables, and as of yesterday, i had a clutch cable snap which may have caused transmission damage. i have been told that the clutch cable has been updated 3 times for the '95 neon because of problems with it, i will be investigating this further. my air compressor has malfunctioned twice since i have had the car, as well as the evaporator. for what it has cost me to repair this car, because chrysler refuses to admit fault, although it is obvious that this model and year is a lemon, i could be driving a mercedes benz!! i have never been so disappointed in a vehicle as i am with this neon! and obviously i am certainly not the only person with constant problems and astronomical repair costs being incurred. it is quite obvious by this database that there are many other people who are in the same boat i am in. chrysler has made not only a poor product, but also a dangerous product. i can't believe that they would knowingly sell a vehicle to so many people with the problems that the neon has had. thieves!

In may of 1995 i purchased a new neon sport coup, on october of 1998 my head gasket was leaking oil. i asked them if this should be happening to a car as new as mine and they told me no. chrysler agreed to pay half of the cost for a new head gasket on my car. i also asked if i would be back in another 2 years to replace the new head gasket that they had replaced and they syated no. i am now back a yea and a half later with the same problem. i called chrysler again and they agreeed to pay half again. now it is 3 weeks after i have had my head gasket replaced and i now have oil coming out of my radiator and they are not sure what is wrong so they are keeping my car over the weekend to try to figure it out. i also have had this car in for a bad cig. liter, weather striping on my left door, loose window (twice and it is still not right), and other problems. i feel like i am stck with a lemon. i have already put out over $3,000 in repares on this car. *ak

As i was driving my 1995 neon home from work, i noticed that the oil light came on. i became concerned and pulled into the nearest service station which was less that 1/2 mile away. i asked the service tech to look at the car and he said that there was an oil leak. he suggested that i have the oil changed and see if there were any loose fittings from my previous oil change a few weeks earlier. the oil was changed and the car started only to continue to leak oil again. i was told not to drive it and had it towed to my dealership the following day. the dealership diagnosed that the cam seal/plug had cracked off and caused damage to the engine. as a result, i would need a new short block installed in my 5yr old car at a price of $3500.00. i feel that the cam seal/plug is defective and that is why it cracked off. i have spoken to other people in the auto industry/repair industry and it is a known problem with the neon car. i cannot imagine that i should be held to pay for the replacement of the engine when i did everything i was supposed to do by stopping the car immediately. i spoke to chrysler directly and within minutes of contacting the dealer, they (chrysler) agreed to pay half of the repair only if i had the service done at a dodge dealership. i appreciated this gesture but i am still looking at paying $1700.00 out of pocket for the damage. i feel that chrysler is aware of the problem with this defective part. i have read complaints on your website and would greatly appreciate a phone call to see if i can get any help in resolving this issue. as you can imagine, i am extremely upset at this point. i have contacted my dealer and wrote a letter to the general manager. i did receive a call from the svc mgr, who will admit no fault. at this point i am waiting to hear from the svc mgr with a firm repair price but as of yet, he has not returned by call. i feel that i am being unfairly treated and being penalized because i did not buy the extended warranty.

One week after purchase, all oil was gone from car. dealer first replaced the oil pressure sending unit, kept leaking, then replaced the valve cover gasket, kept leaking, then replaced the cam seals. dealer assured me that it was not the head gasket. still leaking oil. took it to personal mechanic and it is the head gasket leaking. dealer has refused to refund purchase price or replace vehicle. this has been over a 2 month period. the vehicle also has very noisy brakes, especially when it has sat for an extended period of time (overnight). the car has a shaking and rattling in the steering column when going over bumps, especially at slow speeds. the dash board reflects on the windshield when it is sunny and the glare makes it very difficult to see at times.

*ak

Well, i'm not sure if this is considered a safety issue, but i guess if the head gasket on your car blows while you're driving you could get into an accident?? anyway, about a month ago i notice small amounts of oil leaking from my car. i took it to a local mechanic who thought that perhaps i had a slight crack in my head gasket. he said just to keep an eye on it since to fix if would be an expense. in the meantime a friend of mine told me about a friend of theirs who had a neon and they experienced the same problem. they contact chrysler and someone at chrysler stated they knew there was a problem and would fix it with no cost incurred by the owner. i've tried to located chrysler's customer service email and i have no luck, so i'm not sure if you'll be able to help me or not. i appreciate your time regarding this matter.

I had the head gasket go out on my neon within one year of owning it. i know have the head gasket leaking again, and i'm told that i have not driven over 35,000 miles since the first replacemen.t i should call and complain. when i did i find out from a chrysler dealership here in kansas city that they have seen alot of neon's come in for this problem. i refuse to put out this kind of money on a car that i'm still paying on, especially when this was replaced a short time ago. i feel neon's are a piece of junk!! i have nothing good to say about dodge ,and i hope i can discourage anyone from buying one. i also found out that this should be a recalled part because of the high demand of replacements. i work very hard to make my monthly payments so that should tell you that i do not have spare change sitting around for expensive repairs. i found out from my mechanic that it will cost about $150 in parts and $685 dollars in labor to have this fixed. i called and complained to chrysler, and they gave me a file number of 5515266. i now have to take my car to another place, and wait for the dealership to come back and tell me exactly what my mechanic told me today in order to get help. i was so mad that i was visibly shaken while on the phone to chrysler. i hope that there are people out there that are in my situation, and together we can tell the world to stay away from dodge neons!!!!! *ak

'ive had my car since 9/94 and now with 123,000 miles. i like the shape and the color and comfort of the car. i was told by several dealers to drive it to the end. i will never get what i paid for a trade-in. as of now, ive use my exetended warranty, cant afford to put in shop, 2/98 made a call to holzauers and asked about my skruntched in bits pieces rotor. they checked for squeeks and didnt tell me about a bad rotor. squealing and no brakes. a new brake system was done and still squeaking. now back brakes are bad. ive had lots of bad things happen. but ive had lots of compliments ofthe color. one week after i got it a car spun rocks & scratched the hood paint. the paint job is not good. im getting rusty spots now. water leaked inside and holzauers rigged it to stop. when it get 90/100' hot weather, air bag light stays on, heat/air fan dont work til car cools. i use phillips 66 gas w/93 oct most of the time. 10% ethonol is bad. it will flutter w/low oct water based gas. in reverse gear it grinds and wont go into gear. ive tolerated most of these things til it wont move or start. im glad to have a car. at the price then 13,000$ is not fair. my rights as a consumer w/anew car have not been met. arbitration turned me down over my windows and doors out of adjustment. said my mileage was too high. but for months w/low mileage i was ignored. chrysler just wanted money. i did recommend a newer neon to my aunt. she purchased one. i love my car. but without defects. my window still leaks, my left turn sig. dont go off, brakes squeek, engine light stays on, coil wire loosens, my car shocks my boyfriend, ignition is lose, suspension is bad, car hops around bumpy corners at 30 mph. paint is chipping, i ve had 3 sets of new tires, 2 new batteries, a new fuel pump, airconditioning unit, oil pump is weak, engine makes crakling sound when accelarating. ok!

Fuel pump (20a) fuse randomly blows. 30a fuses used and also randomly blow causing vehicle to stall. no indication of problem with fuel pump itself. o2 sensor and egr valve has been replaced. mechanics have been unable to isolate the cause but have found different variations of circuit/wiring diagrams for this '95 neon sport model vehicle. mechanics have also received varying advice from dodge dealerships on the cause and remedy. result is safety hazard to vehicle driver and occupants if the system fails in traffic.*ak
