I have owned several first generation (1995-1999) dodge and plymouth neons. without exception, all of them have/had corrosion on the fuel filler pipe that was so bad that gasoline spilled on the ground when they were filled. i believe this is a safety hazard and is not, in my experience, normal.

Gas tank leak (very slow and gradual). noticed only while parked, left drops on garage floor. car also had bad head gaskets, parking brake, and automatic transmission. *tr

Peeling paint on my 1995 dodge neon. i am on my third transmission, replaced air conditioner because of smoke under hood, brakes, rotors, fuel leaking, valve cover gasket, head gasket, no oil in engine had it towed. i also in the time i own my neon i have had all kinds of problems. after replacing all this i only had one recall sent to me on the steering coupler. i had that fixed at the dealer. but, i haven't had any other recalls sent to me. 2 transmissions and alot of money spent on a lemon. *tr

Neoprene cover over fuel drain nipple cracked, causing fuel leak. part likely costs $2. hill kelly dodge (dealer) insisted the only means to correct was to replace entire fuel pump for $365. they allowed me to leave with the leak after i refused to pay $365, and dealer failed to replace safety shield over the area where fuel pump/ filter/wires, and tubes were located, thus allowing for possibility of object impact with fuel assembly. *ak

Fuel pump (20a) fuse randomly blows. 30a fuses used and also randomly blow causing vehicle to stall. no indication of problem with fuel pump itself. o2 sensor and egr valve has been replaced. mechanics have been unable to isolate the cause but have found different variations of circuit/wiring diagrams for this '95 neon sport model vehicle. mechanics have also received varying advice from dodge dealerships on the cause and remedy. result is safety hazard to vehicle driver and occupants if the system fails in traffic.*ak

Fuel pump - has extra port that is capped with a non-reenforced rubber cap. the rubber cap appears to have exploded on the end of the cap while the car was sitting in a parking lot. the rupture of the cap allowed gasoline to drip about 1 drop per second. on this car the exhaust pipes are close to the fuel tank. gas fumes were highly noticeable in the passenger compartment. thank goodness for nonsmoker, no sparks, and a guardian angel...my daugther drove the car 7 miles home. this reminds me of the ford pinto fire possibilities. mopar parts does not stock the rubber cap (maybe $1) but will sell the entire fuel pump for just under $300 plus installation. 2) engine - engine failed on cylinder 4 with lost power, etc. had warranty and most of part/labor covered. called chrysler hotline several times and was assured there were no problems being reported with this car (same story at dealer). 3) brakes/air conditioner - failure occurred after car 1 yr old, warranty covered most of costs 4) the failure of the fuel pump component is the most startling of the problems with this car. i sincerely hope that no other neon owner ever experiences this part failure. *ak

The clamp on the fuel injector line came off/loose on two different occasions. when it did, gas spewed on the engine (hot from running) and the car died, obviously, since it was not getting any fuel into the engine. the first time, i had to be towed since i didn't know what it was. the second time, i still had to be towed, but they were able to reattach the clamp. the clamp did not break, it just came loose both times. the part was replaced the first time, not the second. i have not had any other problems with this since, but i always wonder if it will happen again. i'm concerned that if it does, there's a possibility of the engine catching on fire or exploding. i don't know that much about it, but i wanted to let you know in case anyone else had this problem. of course, they may not have survived to tell about it. :( thank you.

Head gasket failure causing car to overheat. don't know yet if damage to head. car has several electrical glitches that don't affect safety. has also failed twice before - fuel tank sensor caused car to never register less than 1/4 tank so ran out of gas. also another type of fuel sensor caused car to lose power - gave impression that car was losing injectors.*ak

I discovered that the fuel tank filler pipe had corroded and separated from the fuel filler door assembly (pipe from fuel filler door to fuel tank). fuel tank filler pipe was found loose and dangling within the right rear fender behind the right rear wheel. fortunately, no apparent loss of gasoline was detected at the point of discovery. contact the local chrysler/dodge service rep indicated that they had no knowledge of this type of safety defect and no recall on record. i am proceed with the repair of this safety defect at my own expense.*ak
