I am in the process of compiling all information on the repairs we have done on the neon. i have decided to wait until i have all the facts, from the first time we had the air conditioning repaired to the recent $900+ repair of the computer and the two-week-old problem with the sheets of peeling paint. the unbelievable paint peeling is inexcusable and was also the last straw. i will be filing a lengthy complaint shortly

While driving to work one morning i checked my temperature gauge and realized my temp was extremely hot. then there was a cloud of smoke rolling from under my hood. being 50 miles from home and knowing this area too well i was very happy to see a county sheriff pull up behind me and offer me a ride to work. my car stayed on the side of the highway for 12 hours until i could get some one trust to come and tow it the 50 miles back home. the car sat for a while until i could save the money to bet it repaired. it was not easy to continue to pay a monthly loan payment on a car that was not drivable. finally when we got the money i called a local and cheap mechanic to see what the problem was. a blown head gasket that in return caused oil to contaminate the radiator. it was only after speaking to my cousin who is a claims adjustor for a national extended warranty co. did i realized that i could get assistance through chrysler to fix my car. i had to fight tooth and nail to get them to agree that this was an ongoing problem with this car. finally eight months later my car is in the dealership getting repaired at only 50% of the cost at my expense. if you have this problem, contact the chrysler corporation office in michigan and tell them you want a district rep to come to your dealership and determine how much assistance they will provide you. do not take no for an answer. they will pay for partial repairs. *nlm

The 1998 dodge neon is notorious for faulty head gaskets. the problem is first noticed by an oil leak and the vehicle overheating. the head gaskets are expensive to replace. after the car gets hot, it stalls at every intersection and every time the vehicle starts to slow down or is placed in neutral (manual transmission). my car stalled in the middle of a busy intersection where traffic was getting on and off of the freeway and would not start again. i had to get out of my car and push it to the side of the freeway entrance because it was the only available place to move my car to. it was fortunate that this incident did not cause an accident or result in me getting injured. chrysler is well aware of the problem and has issued an improved gasket replacement kit, (which is costly) but refuses to take responsibility for the problem by issuing a recall. my car needs new head gaskets and i have been quoted $900 for parts and labor. i don't have that much money, so now my car sits parked in the street and i now have to take the city bus, which closest stop to my house is 1.5 miles, or walk places with my 3 children in 100 degree weather. i don't know what i will do when winter comes. chrysler needs to be forced to issue a recall for this problem. there are hundreds of complaints for the exact same issue on website such as mycarstats.com and many forums. most of the blown head gaskets happened on low mileage vehicles. my car only has 89,000 miles on it. if you do a google search for 1998 dodge neon blown head gaskets, you will get over 80,000 listing of forums, discussions and articles relating to the same problem. *tr

Car overheated eventhough there were plenty of coolant. thick smoke coming out of the hood so i shut off the engine and cruised to a stop. i did not want the engine to catch fire. mechanic said that it was a blown head gasket and that it was a common problem with the neon. why was there not a recall. does someone have to get injured before there is one. i called chrysler and they nicely said that my warranty had expired. if this was defective to start with, the warranty should cover the cost of repairs. thank you for listening. bc

Brought car in for repair of severe oil leak at engine rear. dodge dealer advises that it was a leaking head gasket (blown head gasket) on 1998 neon with approximately 46,463 miles on the odometer. could not reach chrysler customer service at 1-800-922-1997 (stays busy); dealer refused to warrant work even though cause of problem was apparently a design/latent defect in the aluminum head. vehicle purchased new 5/21/98. internet reveals numerous other people have had similar problems. fortunately, the car didn't break down and cause injuries, fataliites or property damage. a manufacturer and dealers should stand by their products. it cost me $636.94 to repair something that the dealer would not warrant because of apparent design/latent defect (damage allegedly required purchase and installation of new cylinder head to properly repair (at my expense) and i told them no way; its their problem, not mine).*ak

Head gastket is blown, needs to be replaced. mechanic said there's oil and coolant everywhere. this car has only 39,000 miles! i've contacted 7 repair shops, average cost to fix is $700. three mechanics told me that this problem is so common, they can't believe there hasn't been a recall yet. one mechanic said that he does these at least once a week. after much research on the internet, i have found that this is a very common problem--i alone have found nearly 100 reports of the same thing happening. as for the sunroof...it broke and was repaired in august 2000. now, just over a year later (no more warranty) the same problem has happened again. there have been tsb's issued on both of these problems. a recall is needed immediately.*ak

On 6/14/1999 i took my car to the dealer for warranty work.(35,784 miles) busted front motor mount,, rattling when changing gears, water in tail pipe when it rained and high rpm, even when idling. they told me there was nothing wrong with the motor mount, the high rpm was normal, they could find no rattle and no problem with exhaust pipe. i demanded a refusal in writing on the motor mount. they asked to keep the car another day and recheck the motor mount and it was now raining, they'd recheck the exhaust pipe noise. they said they replaced the motor mount, but i could find no evidence that they had actually replaced it. being female, we are regarded as mechanically ignorant and mechanics will not listen to us in ms. having our own repair shop for many years, i probably fixed more engines in my teenage years than they do in their career. i had no experience with these new fuel injected vehicles. they refused to listen and i couldn't win against a so-called specialist. after a few months, i found the rattle in reverse. it was a bolt above the drive shaft that was unscrewing itself and banging against the drive shaft. i tightened several times over the next few months and then my friend put silicon on it and it has never unscrewed itself since. the water in the tail pipe is an exhaust manifold leak at the motor and possibly a busted head gasket. the excessive heat has caused my rear main seal to start leaking and i am now getting oil in 2 of my spark plug and it has burnt a valve in my engine. it now has 108000 miles. paid off in 2 years. this was my first car. dealer said i couldn't get extended warraty cause my credit wasn't good enough. i paid full price, 13000 and it already had 127 miles on it. they said they lied to chrysler about my income to get me financed and no problem i've had was fixed. i'm single mom, live in country. i'm disabled since 2/2000. the dealer took advantage of me, now my car needs 1000's in repairs caused by original complaint. i can't fix.

Our problem is with the neons headgasket leaking. as many neon are owned why doesn't dodge do something about these cars leaking. i run a garage and we have done about 25 head gasket jobs on these cars. this is crazy! these cars have low mileage for a car but are out of warranty. i know that dodge redesigned these gaskets. but why don't they recall them. it is crazy to have a car with less than 40,000 miles on it & have to replace the head gasket. these same cars are the same as the talons, eclispes, and other with the same engine problems just different names. problem with the lifters also. dodge has remade lifters because so many problems with the old design. take a car with less than 50,000 on it & it needs a valves replaced. old valves will not close properly. just went through this with a talon. got valves from 2 different dealers 1 set new style other set old style. they do not interchange if using new style have to change the crank and the cam shaft so they can work together. this needs to be checked into. guess dodge is trying to keep this quiet. thank god for 1 honest parts man. it seems all 2.0 suffer from this. then the consumer or in our case the garage has to fork out 1000.00 of $$$$$to fix problem that is dodges problem. *ak

Upon investigation of an oil leak under the hood of my 1998 dodge neon i was informed that the problem was a defective head gasket and sending unit. when i called the local dodge dealership, marietta dodge, inc., 701 cobb parkway south, marietta, ga 30062, (770-424-6601) i was told that this was a common problem and since my auto was not over 80,000 miles the part would be replaced. however, when i arrived for service i was told that the 36,000 mile warrantee was expired so the part could not be replaced free of charge. i feel that the part is a manufacture defect and should be covered regardless of the 36,000 mile warrantee, especially since it did not show up until that particular warrantee was already expired. i see that this problem has been addressed in service bulletin # 090899 and 090997. i feel there should be a recall on these parts since the failure of such cuts down on compression and gas milage making the neon an undesirable automobile. i was informed by the technician that found the source of the leak that his company sees two to three automobiles with this same problem per week. he is the one that advised me to check on a recall since it seems to be a common problem. i have also experienced problems with defective seals that were replaced free of charge after my rear floorboard was getting soaked everytime there was a heavy rain. air conditioner odor which was addressed and treated but not depleated (service bulletin #241197). i also am experiencing brake squeal and groans (service bulletin #051097). i would like to know what my recourse is? where do i go, what do i say, how do i get these problems taken care of before i run out of time? *ak

Being that this is a new car i did not expect that the head gasket would go. upon talking to service repair advisors at my local dealer they informed me that this has been common for the neons. they have seen defective gaskets, but the chrysler corp. has not yet notified or sent out a recall notice for this. my car also experienced several elecrtical anomolies as i was told. the check engine light came on repeatedly and no codes were found that signified a problem so the service man just kept reseting the light. this of course was not acceptable for me, so i had them replace the sending unit to the light(computer control unit). unfortunetly the problem persists(4 attempts at repairs have been made). i have found no resolve for my problem, thus i contact you. hoping for any advice or help this may provide.

Noticed small oil leak while changing oil, looked over engine but due to limited visibility could not locate leak.a month or so later noticed oil puddle under where car was parked.made a few calls around about the problem but found out nothing.kept regular checks on oil level and at first car used about 1 qt of oil every 2 or 3 thousand miles.but it steadily got worse so i got a friend of mine who is a mechanic to come by and check it for me.he came by and gave it a good looking over.according to him the problem appeared to be the head gasket.suggested i contact a dealer to see if this was a common problem or not.well i decided to check the internet for bulletins or recalls on this problem.frankly i was astonished at the # of complaints i found with the same problem.it appears to be a manufacturing defect.(a bad head gasket was used)there is a lot of these complaints posted but you have to fight with the dealer to get it fixed.even though daimler/ chrysler ordered a new head gasket set made for this car the consumer has to foot the bill for the labor on the repair.of course i realize that unless forced to make the repairs, daimler / chrysler is going to stick the consumer with as much as they can.fine, but i will no longer even consider them when i purchase another vehicle.they are now on my s_ _ t list.i will truthfully tell anyone about this and that they should seriously consider customer service when buying a new vehicle.this was a manufacturing defect and should have been taken care of by the company.i am not at all happy about this and a lot of other people feel the same. in my opinion, daimler/ chrysler hurt themselves much more in terms of future sales than they would have lost by doing the right thing. but we as consumers have come to expect this from large companies.profit margin at any given time is the bottom line.shame , shame n

The dealer is trying to blame excessive carbon buildup in an eight month old engine on poor gas. their proposed a fix is running engine cleaner through the combustion system. it hardly seems practical to assume that the combustion system will have to be cleaned every 12,000 miles on a modern automobile running on gasoline from national companies such as amoco and shell. the dealer claims that this is a common problem with all cars nowadays.

My wife bought her 1998 dodge neon in august of 2000. we recently passed 60,000 miles on the car and it began to leak oil. the leak was gradual at first and i assumed that the oil pan bolt had been put in incorrectly by the servicemen at the lube shop. however, on further review, the car was found to have a head gasket leak (approx. an $800 repair). further research has led me to find that this problem is common to all dodge vehicles using this engine. the dealer, in conjunction with dodge, has offered to cover the repair, minus a $250 deductible and a $105 fee for a coolant flush/oil change that they say is necessary when dealing with a head gasket repair. so, in review, dodge's product is faulty and they know it. nevertheless they will not assume full responsibility for a flawed design that they conceived. this practice of selling a product with known flaws, and subsequently refusing to assume responsibility is, at best, dishonest.

Intermittently vehicle stalled while driving. vehicle was taken to the dealer, and they determined that the intake manifold was cracked and caused coolant to leak inside the engine. consumer indicated three years ago they replaced the intake manifold at consumer's expense of $3,000. currently, problem recurred, and will cost consumer about $5,000. *ak

We have purchased a 1998 dodge neon for our son who is in college. the car only has 24,000 miles on it currently. the head gasket is gone and oil is leaking everywhere. the repair for this will be between $700 and $800. i have made contact to chrysler who stated that because the 36,000/3 year warranty was up they would not do anything about. i asked them if that was the best that their engines could do (head gasket going at 24,000 miles). from what i have read and been told by a dealership, chrylser knew they had a problem in 1998 with head gaskets and rectified it during the same year but never recalled the cars there were manufactured early in the production. i have seen so many complaints with the head gasket on this particular model so i don't understand what it takes to get a recall on this part.*ak

Consumer states his auto has been leaking oil for months. he finally took it to the dealership and was told that he had a bad head gasket. he thinks that this is a bad motor, because it only has 24,000 miles on it. ts

On the morning of 06/27/00,while driving to work. as i accelerated to 70 from 65, the donut on the exhaust manifold (flange gasket) gave out. the car began to sound like a lawnmower. i toke it to midas. they told me to check with dodge for federal repairs for exhaust. dodge said no, it wasn't covered, only catylitic converters and brain of elect. i didn't beleive the rep. he proved no proof. the brake system, had the rotors resurfaced and pads replaced at 36244. is this normal? the drums had to be recerfaced also.
