ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
PE07027CHRYSLER GROUP LLC05/29/200708/02/2007ENGINE STALLING & ELECTRIC POWER LOSS07V291000
On july 3, 2007, daimlerchrysler corporation (dcc) submitted a defect information report to nhtsa describing a defect that could result in engine stall while driving in approximately 80,894 model year (my) 2007 jeep wrangler and dodge nitro vehicles manufactured between january 30, 2006 and january 22, 2007 (nhtsa recall 07v-291, dcc recall g25).according to dcc, the totally integrated power module (tipm) in these vehicles was programmed with software that may allow the engine to stall under certain conditions.dcc will reprogram the tipm in the recalled vehicles with revised software. odi opened pe07-027 on may 29, 2007, based on 53 complaints alleging engine stall and/or loss of electrical power in my 2007 jeep wrangler vehicles.odi was also monitoring similar complaints in my 2007 dodge nitro vehicles.dcc's analysis of complaints to dcc and nhtsa found that many described events with a momentary loss of electrical power inside the vehicle and a corresponding loss of engine power.many of the reports also indicated that the instrument cluster telltale lamps momentarily illuminated during the event. dcc's engineering analysis determined that the tipm could initiate an internal reset cycle lasting approximately 75 ms in response to error messages on the communication bus.the key on signal from the tipm to the powertrain control module (pcm) is lost during a tipm reset.if the pcm loses the key on signal for longer than 40 ms, it interprets it as the vehicle ignition being turned off and begins a power down routine.after the tipm reset, the key on signal is restored and the pcm powers back up.if the rotating components of the engine contain sufficient inertia, the vehicle may restart with no input from the operator as reported in some of the complaints.if the engine does not restart in this manner, it can be restarted by the operator.a revision to the tipm software on january 22, 2007 changed the tipm reset time to 17 ms, removing the potential for pcm power down and engine stall. odi has received 178 complaints potentially related to the alleged defect in my 2007 jeep wrangler vehicles and 52 complaints involving my 2007 dodge nitro vehicles.two of the nitro complaints allege that a crash resulted from an engine stall incident, one of which caused minor injuries to a passenger.as of june 1, 2007, dcc identified 151 wrangler complaints and 128 nitro complaints. this investigation has been closed with dcc's recall.

Car gave no indication that there was a problem. as i started to accelerate the car just went dead. i had it towed & the shop told me the engine was blown. the pin broke & went through the piston, put a hole in it & cracked it. the shop said it was a known design flaw. *tr

I drove to the nearby mall, parked my dodge nitro, locked it, and went inside to do some shopping at radio shack, i came back out and got into my vehicle, inserted the key and turned the key when i heard a very loud thump from the front of the engine compartment. i had no electrical power. i got out of my nitro and popped open the hood and looked inside and saw that the battery had exploded, both caps had blown off and the top of the battery was cracked wide open with battery acid pouring out. this was a very loud thump when i turned the key. i am so thankful i was not checking my power steering fluid or something like requiring the engine to be started, i could possibly been seriously injured. i call the dodge compliant line and made a complaint. this was a dodge factory installed battery. i have pictures of the battery. i ruined a good shirt and pair of jeans getting the battery out. i replaced the battery and so far the nitro is doing fine. i would like some form of compensation from dodge for clothes that got ruined and for replacing the battery. this could be a serious problem and dangerous one. *tr

I am writing to you to express my concerns and also complaints regarding daytona dodge. my husband and i purchased a 2007 dodge nitro on july 7, 2008. we brought it back the very next day, because it wasn't running correctly, and also a check engine light was on. between july 8th and january 1, 2009, that vehicle has been in the service department of daytona dodge 11 or 12 times. they have had to drop the transmission on this vehicle 3 times; they brought in a corporate representative from dodge over in orlando. he test drove the vehicle with us, and did identify that there was a problem. however, after inducting the vehicle back in for service, the problem was still not fixed. i was finally told by the service manager that daytona dodges service department has done everything they were told to do, and that the vehicle is just suppose to run that way. i find it very difficult to believe that any corporation would manufacture a vehicle to run the way this nitro does. i have done some investigating, and found that there are various problems that have been associated with the dodge nitro. the nitro i have both shudders at around 40 mph and also has a problem idling, it tries to shut off periodically whilst at a red light. i feel that this is a terrible way to treat customers. please understand that i am writing to you in the hopes that perhaps you can get someone to address the issue. *tr updated 03/06/09.*jb

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 dodge nitro slt. since its purchase in february o 2007 the vehicle has been in the shop several times for random stalling. after the first couple of occurrences the vehicle was taken to the shop. the mechanics were unable to diagnose the cause of failure. when the vehicle was taken to the shop for failure again the contact told the mechanics to test drive the vehicle for a day in hopes that they could duplicate the failure. the mechanic obeyed , and called the contact the next day. the mechanic stated that the cause of failure was determined, adjusted, and repaired. two to three days after the repair was performed all of the instrument panel lights illuminated, the vehicle jerked and stalled, and finally shut off. after approximately 40 seconds she was able to restart the vehicle. the vehicle returned to the shop two days later where it currently remained. the contact met with the general manager of the dealer and made him aware of the failure. the current mileage is 4,200, and failure mileage was 560. *ak

With only 4,500 miles on my 2007 dodge nitro, the entire engine stalled, died, while i was driving to work, going about 45 miles per hour. power loss was complete, no radio, no engine, all lights on the instrument panel came on. the outage lasted about , i guess 30 secs to 1 minute, then the engine came back on as did the radio. i was in heavy traffic, on the inside lane and had it not restarted, i was in a wreck for sure as a big truck was behind me, another car next to me in the outside lane. i have taken it to the dealer which says it could be the ignition switch, but after reading for hours on the dodge nitro forum, i find that many have experienced this same issue and not one dealer has been able to find a fix. i have had this vehicle in the shop 7 times since i bought it. all of the problems are a problem for me as this is my only vehicle and being single, i have no other transportation to my teaching job. but this stalling issue, if not fixed, will lead to a major accident any day. chrysler need to be actively pursuing a fix or a recall for this problem before someone is killed. *tr
