FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE

3 weeks of owning the vehicle the windshield wipers started to go all by themselves, gauges went to 0, a/c stopped working, horn would beep, windows and locks did not work. this would last for approximately 5 minutes as you would drive down the road. this went on for a few days before i could bring it in. also each and every time i would fill the gas tank it would over flow. obviously the sensor to know when the tank is full doesnt engage properly. the elestrical issue was fixed and was said it was a censor gone bad. this is now happening again. i can not get anyone to say there is an issue, i am afraid that a fire may start or i could be in an accident with my child and possibly other passengers.

When filling gas tank, the hose clicks to say it is full, evertime i pull out gas hose, gas spills everywhere, over vehical and wheels and gas station floor. this happens with no 'topping off' of gas.

As i fill the tank the pump will shut off and after a few seconds it the gas has a large splash back from inside of the tank i consulted a mechanic and he stated that it is the roll over/vent valve inside of the tank and that it does not open and close correctly and that the only fix for it is to replace the enitre fuel tank at my expense this creates a safety hazzard in two ways when fueling the car, ground and the operator should not be covered with gasoline at any time second if the roll over valve fails then it should be a failure of the mfg and should be replaced.

Every time i fill up the gas tank the nozzle never clicks off no matter what pump or gas station i use or go to and gas will just pour out of the tank spout, even after i pull the nozzle out, some gas will still pour out of the tank spout.

My 2008 dodge nitro overflows out of the gas intake after the pump nozzle clicks off and the tank is full. this happened occasionally at first but now happens at every fill up and spills gasoline all over my car and the ground. this is very unsafe and is a known issue with many dodge and jeep owners. this needs to be a factory recall and be addressed. it has been going on with dodge vehicles as far back as 2005 from information i have read on the web.

When fueling the vehicle, the gas tank will spew gasoline out when the tank reaches capacity. this happens regardless of whether you are manually holding the pump or have it set with the little lock feature to automatically fill.

When filling up at a service station, gas will now flow back out causing significant spillage over the side of the car and on the ground. this may be caused by a faulty sensor in the gas tank which regulates overflow and prevents leakage in an overturn accident. initially i thought it was due to cold weather but it is continuing during warm weather. this is a safety risk with gas spillage which may lead to fire and/or other damage.

When filling the gas tank, the gas will spew out as the tank gets full. the gas gets all over the side of the car as well as the ground around that area. this is a well documented problem on nitro forums and the cause is known to be a faulty roll over valve in the tank. the only fix is to have the tank completely replaced. this is a known defect and safety concern and the owner should not be responsible for the replacement. this is not sanitary or good for the car. the exact same problem was recalled on the jeep liberties but not for our nitro's, which have the exact same tank. this is a serious health and safety risk, please help us nitro owners out.

At the time of fueling, the nozzle clicked off about a 1/2 cup of gas came out of the tank all over the side of the truck.

My last 3 or so gas fill ups have resulted in gasoline gushing out of gas tank upon the gas nozzle shutting itself off. the first couple of times i didnt think much of it but this last time i was holding the gas nozzle when this happened and before i knew it i was soaked in gasoline. this seems like a huge concern along the lines of the old gmc gas tanks that would explode upon an accident.

Splash back of gasoline when filling up fuel tank. incident occurs just about every time tank is filled and the consequences are that a large amount of gasoline shoots back out of the filling nozzle all over the painted surface of the vehicle and on to the surface of the area in which parked. in addition to aggravation, environmental damage, paint damage, there are extremely dangerous consequences that could occur if some sort of an ignition source occurred at the time it happened.

The gas tank overflows when filling. the auto shutoff on the gas tank is faulty, this is a problem with the same year jeep libertys with the same tank. the 20 chrome wheels flake and corrode even when kept clean and out of the elements. this must be fixed!

When i fill up my tank at any gas station, i will put the gas nozzle in the gas filler neck, and have it fill up. when the gas tank reaches it's maximum level, the gas nozzle will automatically 'click' off, however, the gas will overflow out the gas filler neck and spray out all over the ground and down the car, i'm thinking that something so flammable as gasoline spraying out and dripping on the ground and down the car is a huge fire risk....am i wrong?

Gas tank overflows during filling process. sometimes the pump shuts off and then overflows, and sometimes the auto shut off doesn't work and the gas spews until shutoff manually.
11/11/201049500
With every fuel fill up i attempt, upon completion when the fuel pump shuts off and stops pumping the vehicle 'spits up' fuel spewing it on the car and ground. i have found no way to avoid this, even pumping slower or attempting to pull the nozzle out at the end quickly or leaving it in to block spewage. it is hazardous, messy, and not to mention annoying. i don't know why there has been no recall for this issue, as i've seen mulitple dodge vehicles and complaints about the exact same thing happening everywhere to everyone.

Every time i fill up my dodge nitro fuel overflows from the tank in upwards to half a gallon. it seems to not matter whether i set the pump on low, high or fill up manually, fuel overflows from the nozzle of the tank, after pump has shut off)...once soaking my pants in gas. the issue has happened multiple times at multiple gas stations. this is an environmental problem, it's a personal danger, and a danger to others. i bought the vehicle used, and have no knowledge that this has been an issue prior to me purchasing, however, based on how many times it has happened to me i can most likely assume it was. when doing research on the issue i have discovered that i am not the only person having this exact problem. seems as though jeeps and dodges are having these issues. a recall needs to be enforced on this.
08/20/201141000
2008 dodge nitro fuel tank overflow problem. pump would click and fueling would stop as normal, but gas would shoot out the side of the gas pump just past the handle at the rubber gasket before the nozzle. this was a consistent thing. cars ahead of me at the pump would have no issues and it didn't matter which pump i went to the result was the same.
10/30/2008
I purchased the nitro in oct. 08, ever since then, when i fill up the gas tank it would explode out of the tank, at first we thought it was the gas pumps, but just decided it was the car at fault, because i have been traveling out of town to get gas, so i called dodge to see if there were any recalls and there were not any recalls ,so they told me to take it to a dealer and they knew exactly what the problem was. we needed to replace the gas tank. so my point is, dodge needs to recall this issue for a defective gas tank. also i found pages of the same problem on the internet.. so please i can not afford to fix the issue myself.

Tl-the contact owns a 2008 dodoge nitro. while attemtping to fuel the vehicle, the contact stated that fuel would spill back out onto the ground. the dealer was unable to duplicate the failure. the manufacturer was aware of the failure. no repairs were performed. the current mileage was 58,700. the approximate failure mileage was 56,000. bw
05/04/201179000
When i fill my gas tank, the gas will shoot out as the tank gets full. the pump will shut off, but the fuel continues to shoot out the tube and all over the side of the car and anyone standing there. this has happened multiple times and is a dangerous problem to have. i do not like being doused with fuel or having fuel spraying onto the ground and surroundings. the jeep liberty had the same issue and it was recalled but for some reason, the dodge nitro has not been, which has the same tank.
04/11/2011
When filling up the gas tank of my 2007 dodge nitro, when reaching full and the pump automatically turns off several cups of fuel come back out the filler location and spray over the side of the car, ground, pump, and anybody standing nearby. it has happened at several gas pumps and stations. upon doing research on the internet it appears that it is a problem with the vent in the gas tank. this is a serious safety hazard, which could lead to both a fire at the gas station, and from what i have read a significant risk of explosion if involved in a rollover accident.
01/01/201132000
Everytime i go to fill up my gasoline tank of the 2008 dodge nitro i just purchased in dec 2010 it overflows all over the side of my car. this is very upsetting and i see this as a major safety issue. in additon to that the finish of the nitro is being ruined everytime i fill up. now i have to put in 40 $'s of gas in each time to avoid overflowing the tank. this is obnoxious. who in the world wants to stop at the gas station more frequently because of a gasoline tank malfunction? which i would have known before buying the thing!
01/10/201143000
Every time fuel tank is filled and the gas pump shuts off, a fair amount of gasoline shoots backwards out of the gas tank. the car was purchased in january, and this has happened each time the tank has been filled.

Splash back of gasoline when filling up fuel tank. incident occurs every time tank is filled and the consequences are that a large amount of gasoline shoots back out of the filling nozzle all over the painted surface of the vehicle and on to the surface of the area in which parked. this is after the pump shuts off or after i relase the lever on the pump when finifhed fueling. in addition to aggravation, environmental damage, paint damage, there are extremely dangerous consequences that could occur if some sort of an ignition source occurred at the time it happened. controlling the flow/speed of gasoline from the gas pump through the nozzle into the tank filler tube does not lessen the problem
03/11/201136500
Every time i fill up my gas tank on my 2008 dodge nitro for the last four months, gas overflows from the tank unless i manually stop the pump before the tank is full. a mechanic looked at it and said that it was either a problem with the filter on the gas line or something wrong with the line itself. this is a serious safety issue as gas runs down the side of my vehicle and also is on the ground at the gas station.

Gas tank overflows every time i refuel 2008 dodge nitro r/t
12/01/201070000
It first starting was pumping gas into my vehicle when the pump clicked off indicating my pump was full, and then spewed gasoline all over my hands, shoes, down the side of my suv, and into a puddle on the ground!!! i was grossed out and embarrassed (thinking i had done something wrong somehow). what i thought was a one time fluke turned into a regular occurrence. now, every time i fill up my gas tank- regardless of gas station, fuel type, city, and flow rate of gas -- the tank squirts back at me. this is huge safety concern. california just did a recall of several automatic gas pump nozzles that would spew out after clicking off. it is very disconcerting that there has not been a recall for this gas pump in what is a known, documented, dangerous, and hazard. i contacted the dealership with my concern wherein they referred me to chrysler. i was extremely disappointed with the service i received. the case manager told me that not only had never heard of this incident before, that without a recall issued by the nhtsa i would be required to pay out of pocket for a diagnosis with little guarantee of any type of compensation possible because my vehicle is past warranty. she showed no concern for the safety hazards associated with this supposedly new issue. this gas tank issue needs to be addressed.
11/17/201035500
Each time i fill up my 08' dodge nitro sxt it spews gas back out onto me and my truck since i purchased it in november of 2010 from carmax. i do not top it off, it's simply from the first fill up using the automatic shutoff. carmax says they can't find a problem and they're looking for it...i know what the problem is, just fix it! they replaced the evaporator canister and that did not fix the problem. now they're looking into replacing the gas tank due my research since they could not find on their own, even after consulting the local dodge dealership asking if they've come across the problem. there is a defect in the valve of the gas tank that is there to prevent an explosion in the event of a rollover accident. therefore, the defect in the valve is causing the gas to spew out on people, their vehicles and all over the ground. chrysler is aware of the problem but they're not doing a recall. why isn't this issue being brought to the nation's attention, this is a huge health and safetry hazard to me and the environment??!!??

I have a 2008 dodge nitro--every time i fill my tank it back splashes out at me --i put paper towels up to stop it from getting on cap and then on my skin to no avail --then i put the soaked towel into the trash at station --thats not good--that could be ignited by someone who empties an ashtray or throws a cigarette into the trash --i make a mess at every station i go to --always a puddle --the car is white and i try to wax it evertime but its ohio and i cant wax it when its 10 outside--the paint is discoloring now and looks yellow--you people need to do something now this isnt just an inconvience its epa and safety issue not to mention my health from contact with gas each time i fill please help me

When filling my 2008 dodge nitro and immediately after the pump shuts off automatically, gasoline suddenly spews out of the filler tube. this has happened repeatedly and multiple gas stations over the last few weeks

Gas overflows when filling tank on my 2008 dodge nitro. i have heard this is most likely caused by a valve in the gas tank that is there to prevent an explosion in the event of a rollover. the valve is defective and thus, the gas spills out.

Every time i fill up my 2008 dodge nitro with gas, it sprays/overflows fuel. i have owned this vehicle for 8 months now, and this has been happening every time i fill up since the beginning. this happens at every gas station and has happened in multiple states. this is a hazard to me, to the people around me, and to the environment. this is a severe fire risk, not to mention the vapors i, and the people around me, inhale each time i need gas. the continued gas spillage has faded the plastic fender flare. this happens if it is filling automatically or if i am holding the handle. the handle clicks off, and after about 1-2 seconds, there is a rush of gas back up toward me. i have been covered on multiple occasions, and there is approximately 2-3 cups of gas spilled onto my vehicle and then onto the ground every time i fill up. this is an extreme hazard which has been caused by faulty manufacturing and should be remedied by the manufacturer either voluntarily or via a recall.

Everytime the gas tank is filled with an automatic pump, it overflows. when the pump turns off automatically, gas continues until it spills out of the tank and onto the ground. this has been happening at every fill-up for the last 3-4 months at various gas stations from il, mo, tx and ar.

2008 dodge nitro fuel tank overflow problem. pump would click and fueling would stop as normal, but gas would shoot out the side of the gas pump just past the handle at the rubber gasket before the nozzle. this was a consistent thing. cars ahead of me at the pump would have no issues and it didn't matter which pump i went to or what station, the result was the same.

The 2008 dodge nitro spews gas all over every time the tank is full without forewarning and of course without forcing the fuel in. it is in the shop right now, and i have been told they are not sure what needs to be done, but after researching through the internet this appears to be a common problem. spilled fuel is a hazard and a threat to the environment.

Currently own a 2008 dodge nitro. the past 3 times i have filled it with gas, the gas comes back spewing out even though the pump has shut off. this happened at 3 different gas stations and different times of the day. each time gas got on me and my clothes. each time my car is covered with gas as well as the ground. this should be considered a recall! this is a pretty serious situation and after doing some research on the internet it has definitely happened to other people with the same car. one little spark could light me and my car on fire as well as a gas station. i have called my dealer and am awaiting resolution.

Currently own a 2008 dodge nitro. the past 4 times i have filled it with gas, the gas comes back spewing out of the filler nosel in the car. it never signals the pump to shut off. this happened at 4 different gas stations and different times of the day. 2 of the times gas got on my and my clothes. all 4 times my car is covered with gas as well as the ground. after that i realize it is something wrong with my car. i called the dealer on friday 10/1/2010 and told them about the problem. the exact words that came out of their mouths were we have heard of this problem before just bring it down when you can i go to the dealership at 8am on 10/4/2010 the dealer says it is out of warranty by 2400 miles. he calls me at 1030 and tells me it is going to be $1100 to replace the gas tank and filler nosel to fix the problem. i am not having this work done because this should be considered a recall. this, in my opinion is a pretty serious situation and after doing some research on the internet has definitely happened to other people with the same car. one little spark could light me and my car on fire as well as a gas station. they said replacing a gas tank and filler nosel will fix the problem. currently i am awaiting a phone call from the national dodge customer service department about this topic and having them cover the costs of replacing the defective parts.

After owning my brand new 2008 dodge nitro for 14 months, every time i fueled it, the gas would spew out, way after the pump clicks off. i have been covered in gasoline 3 times and 2 servcie men have been as well. i have a 2 y/o asthmatic daughter. the odor of gas engulfs the interior compartment as well when the overflow occurs. i have been refused loaners each time the truck has been in. this is a safety issue! but i had been told time and time again, dodge did not feel it was a safety issue. last week my whole tank was finally replaced after the 1st repair didnt work. gased up today and gas back out all over my truck. as well as the gas spewing out covering anyone or anything in its way, my trucks paint is becoming damaged as well. *cn
