Defect SummaryOn certain passenger and sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks equipped with automatic transmissions, the software programmed into the powertrain control module can cause a momentary lock up of the drive wheels if the vehicle is traveling over 40 mph and the operator shifts from drive to neutral and back to drive.
Consequence SummaryIf the drive wheels locked up, loss of vehicle control could occur increasing the risk of a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will reprogram the powertrain control module free of charge. the recall began on october 2, 2006. owners may contact daimlerchrysler at 1-800-853-1403.

On july 3, 2007, daimlerchrysler corporation (dcc) submitted a defect information report to nhtsa describing a defect that could result in engine stall while driving in approximately 80,894 model year (my) 2007 jeep wrangler and dodge nitro vehicles manufactured between january 30, 2006 and january 22, 2007 (nhtsa recall 07v-291, dcc recall g25).according to dcc, the totally integrated power module (tipm) in these vehicles was programmed with software that may allow the engine to stall under certain conditions.dcc will reprogram the tipm in the recalled vehicles with revised software. odi opened pe07-027 on may 29, 2007, based on 53 complaints alleging engine stall and/or loss of electrical power in my 2007 jeep wrangler vehicles.odi was also monitoring similar complaints in my 2007 dodge nitro vehicles.dcc's analysis of complaints to dcc and nhtsa found that many described events with a momentary loss of electrical power inside the vehicle and a corresponding loss of engine power.many of the reports also indicated that the instrument cluster telltale lamps momentarily illuminated during the event. dcc's engineering analysis determined that the tipm could initiate an internal reset cycle lasting approximately 75 ms in response to error messages on the communication bus.the key on signal from the tipm to the powertrain control module (pcm) is lost during a tipm reset.if the pcm loses the key on signal for longer than 40 ms, it interprets it as the vehicle ignition being turned off and begins a power down routine.after the tipm reset, the key on signal is restored and the pcm powers back up.if the rotating components of the engine contain sufficient inertia, the vehicle may restart with no input from the operator as reported in some of the complaints.if the engine does not restart in this manner, it can be restarted by the operator.a revision to the tipm software on january 22, 2007 changed the tipm reset time to 17 ms, removing the potential for pcm power down and engine stall. odi has received 178 complaints potentially related to the alleged defect in my 2007 jeep wrangler vehicles and 52 complaints involving my 2007 dodge nitro vehicles.two of the nitro complaints allege that a crash resulted from an engine stall incident, one of which caused minor injuries to a passenger.as of june 1, 2007, dcc identified 151 wrangler complaints and 128 nitro complaints. this investigation has been closed with dcc's recall.

On december 06, 2012 was stopped at a red light. light turned green and i proceeded to accelerate, i then hear a loud thump and veh shut down. i looked under the veh only to find that my drive shaft had exploded and broke in two, falling to the roadway. looked like a bomb went off under my veh. see that this is s recurring problem with this model. why is their no recall??? if i were going at st higher rate of speed could of resulted in injury or lost of life. why is dodge not taking responsibility?? *tr

I was driving at 45ph and all of a sudden my cars wheeled locked up and i came to a sudden stop with my wheels laying down rubber but i did not crash. when my car was towed to the garage the conclusion was that the rearend seal was leaking and all the fluid came out of the rearend and the gears locked up. *tr

About three weeks ago on 05 december 2011, i was driving my 2007 dodge nitro 4x2 until i came to a stop at a red traffic light. i had my blinker on and was ready to make a right turn as soon as the light turned green. when the light turned green i lightly stepped on the acceletator when a loud explosion was heard and felt in the vehicle undercarriage. the vehicle's drive shaft had exploded upwards, hitting the undercarriage and then dropping to the floor. the vehicle lost complete power and stopped immediately after the driveline fell off. my daughter and niece felt the hit in greater magnitude as they were sitting in the back seat. my insurance covered the wrecker and transported the vehicle to the nearest dodge dealership. the dealership diagnosed the problem as a faulty heatshield that fell off the undercarriage and was rubbing against the aluminum driveshaft. since the heatshield is made of aluminum and fiberglass, the rubbing of aluminum against aluminum has a cutting effect that caused the driveshaft to cut open and then explode cutting it in half. luckly, i was making a turn going no more than 10 to 15 miles an hour. had i been driving on a highway this issue would have likely caused a fatal and catastrophic accident. there is no recall that i know of. my extended warranty does not cover the repair as it is not covered under the policy. my car insurance does not cover the repairs as it is considered a mechanical failure and not a collision. dodge should conduct an investigation on the cause of the heatshield coming off from the undercarriage, and recall vehicles to prevent any future catastrophic events.

Vehicle shutters or surges between 38-50 mph. i have taken to two dealerships and neither had repaired it. i have had the torque converter replaced and computer reprogrammed and nothing has worked. it is still at the second dealership for them to try to figure out what is wrong with it. they were going to put a recording device on the vehicle to see if they could detect the problem. *tr

POWER TRAIN - AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
08/19/2008293001
The vehicle when in drive at any speed does a jerking motion forward as if it is slipping gears or losing power to the transmission. the sensation is worse, physically moving my body forward, when driving at higher speeds, 60-70. i know the problem was not due to bad gas because the car was idling relatively well. it was not electrical due to the fact that you could release your foot from the gas and coast and the sensation stopped. i followed up with chrysler to confirm no other recalls had been issued on the car. when i brought the car to the dealer i told them i thought it was the torque converter. this first time they had the car for about 3 days. when i picked it up they said nothing was wrong with the torque converter, they simply updated the transmission via the computer. the first time i drove the car which was on the freeway- assuming it was fixed, the problem occurred immediately but more severe, causing my body to hit the steering wheel. it went back to the garage again, this time magically it was the torque converter and a seal. i got the car back, first time i drove it.. still is doing the same thing. i cant drive my kids it, its not safe to drive on the freeway. it is an accident waiting to happen. twice i was almost rear ended. i am forced to drive it to maintain my job but will only drive in the slow lane so that i have some kind of out it is now at the garage for the third time. the dealer is finally paying for the loaner. even if they say they fixed it there is no way i can trust the vehicle. i have contacted chrysler but have received no communication from them regarding this hazardous condition. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 dodge nitro 4x2. while driving between 60-65 mph, the transmission pulls, stutters, vibrates, and shakes. the vehicle jerks when the contact depresses the accelerator pedal. the vehicle also has difficulty shifting into the correct gear. the vehicle has been taken to the dealer more than ten times for the transmission. the o-ring has been replaced, the computer has been adjusted, and finally the torque converter was replaced; however, the failures persist. daimler chrysler stated that nothing could be done. the cable cord inside the rear passenger side door snapped when the window was rolled down. the contact was informed that the window could not be replaced until after the holidays. while driving between 25-30 mph, the luggage rack holder on the driver side snapped off. the current mileage is 16,595 and failure mileage was 400. updated 01-29-08. *kb

2007 dodge nitro with serious electrical problems. consumer states that the vehicle is having problems with the transmission and has stalled due to electrical problems. they want a full refund for the vehicle. *kb the consumer stated while driving, the vehicle lost voltage. the instruments dropped down unreasonably once the warning lights illuminated. the headlights started dying out. the gear shift had to be wiggled to get it to move, there was a knocking noise while going from first to second gear. the dealer informed the consumer an internal short had occurred with the 12 volt battery. the consumer also stated the steering would drift, there was abnormal traction and the doors would lock up. the abs was not working correctly because the vehicle would drift while driving. the consumer stated the dealerships were using 2006 jeep liberty software to troubleshoot the problems with his vehicle. the manufacturer did not send the specific software to update his vehicle.*jb the manufacturer agreed to a settlement rather than continuing the arbitration process. updated 05/20/08. *jb

This is a follow up on the complaint i made in may. my nitro is still not fixed. it still has serious shifting problems, now steering problems. it doesn't shift right, the motor bogs down, it has even gotten stuck between 1-2 gears under a red light at a very busy intersection. i've taken my truck to two different dealerships and now it's showing unperformed recalls and customer satisfaction notifications but dealership says they were instructed by chrysler not to work on my truck because i filed a lemon law complaint. these are safety issues and i don't think it's right i have to drive a car that is not safe and put my life, the lives of my family and others at risk. one dealership says they did the recall, the other says my truck doesn't need it. meanwhile it still shows on vin search that it's unperformed. i have been informed by nitroforum.com that it is a computer software problem. i think that this should be investigated before someone gets killed. *tr

Approximately 2 weeks after i purchased my new vehicle it began to run poorly. it feels as though it is missing out, transmission slipping or losing power??? i am not sure exactly what the problem is and the service people are not sure exactly what is wrong and they do not know what to do to correct the problem. my vehicle is a 2007 and should not run as poorly as it does. they have reprogrammed something on the computer twice i think from what they tell me. the problem seems to be okay for a few days and it starts running poorly again. there is a recall on my vehicle, it is recall number g25 to reprogram tipm engine stalling, this may help the problem but i am not sure yet. i feel that dodge should stand behind their vehicles. i paid too much for a new vehicle for it to not run properly. i also had a service tech tell me that they were just not as sensitive to the problem that i am having. i hope you will be able to help with this problem. i have also noticed that sometimes when i start the vehicle it does not start properly. it starts but idles roughly and this has done this when it is not cold outside. *jb

I purchased a dodge nitro in october of 2006. since then i have had it stall out on me, on the highway, twice and re-start automatically. it's pretty unsafe to be driving a car at 80mph on the interstate and have it stall out and restart on you for no apparent reason. i know i am not the only nitro owner who has had this issue. when i explained to the service department at the dealership about this they said since they cannot recreate the problem they cannot diagnose it. i have not called chrysler yet, but i am about to. i don't want to die, or cause the death of others, because my car is malfunctioning beyond my control. something needs to be done about this.

Between first and second gear, there is a shudder in either the transmission or torque converter. this is a clunking noise that most prevalently appears in stop-and-go traffic. i have argued with my dealer and with dodge for a remedy to this, and they both refuse to acknowledge this problem. it first appeared around january of 2007 and continues. also, i have previously contacted your office regarding the stalling issue of my nitro. on at least two occasions, my nitro has stalled while traveling between 50 and 60 mph. the car loses all power and all lights illuminate on the dashboard. i have received a safety recall for this item, but i have no confidence in the repairs performed by dodge. i believe this vehicle is an unreasonably dangerous product. *jb

I was at a stop light and when the light turn green i was about to go when i heard a loud bang and the side air bags deployed. my truck never moved.the drive shaft completly broke in half ,it looks like when i was about to take off the drive shaft broke , shot up and hit the floor board and that caused the air bags to deploy. the drive shaft looks like it twisted. i havent fixed the vehicle yet and im hoping dodge will cover the expenses. luckily i wasnt in the highway because it could have caused my truck to flip.

I was taking a left turn at an intersection traveling approximately 5mph. at the completion of the turn i heard a loud bang and the side impact airbags deployed. upon inspecting the vehicle it was found that the drive shaft had twisted and fallen out of the transmission. the casing along the top of the nitro cracked, and caused damage to the interior headliner and windshield. the car would not go into drive or park indicating damage to the transmission as well. upon inspection by two separate body shops (one being a dealership) it was determined that there was damage to the drive shaft that resulted in the incident. at this time the warranty is in the process of replacing the drive shaft.
