Dt: the consumer owns a 2001 dodge ram 1500 quad cab. upon deceleration the consumer heard a roaring sound coming from the rear end of the vehicle. when he accelerated the roaring sound went away. when the consumer let off of the accelerator the second time he heard an explosion sound, and the rear end locked. upon inspection it was determined that the nut on the pinion gear had come aloose and caused the rear end to come apart. the drive shaft punctured the quad cab's interior floorboard. the service dealer referred him to the manufacturer's customer service department. the manufacturer stated this was a mechanical failure and not a defect within the vehicle. *ak (11/22/05) components affected are: rear differential assembly, transmission, transfer case and driveshaft. *sc

I own a 2001 dodge ram truck. i bought the truck used from a dealership with 40,000 miles on it. one week later the transmission blew. i had to pay $1500 to get it fixed. this has been an ongoing problem with the truck since i bought it. no body can figure out what is wrong with it. im out all this money and the truck is worthless to me. everyone i talk to that owns one of these trucks has transmission problems everyone. i think the chrysler corp. should have a recall on these transmissions! *tr

I have replaced 4 46re transmissions in my 01 dodge ram sport 4x4. the 46re is a terrible transmission and they are known for being bad. they even have that as a reputation. chrysler needs to do a recall on these transmissions for what has happened to many consumers. i have been through 4 transmission from 46,000miles to 109,000 miles, and i need to replace the one that is in it now. it has failed out of nowhere without any warning and has almost caused accidents. it costs atleast 2000 to replace the transmission and i've had to pay for 1 of them because they aren't covered under any warranty. chrysler should be held accountable. *tr

Purchased truck new in 2001. in 2004 truck started shifting hard into 4th. also after sitting overnight in high humidity would start rough or not start at all. would only start after engine warmed or dried out. problem could not be found after running diagnostics on either problem. 2007; throttle sensor went out. nov 2007, truck would start out in 2nd gear, would not shift down into 1st. three days later transmission would shift at all, had to drive home a top speed of 25 mph at 2,000 rpm's. it's now getting a new transmission. *tr

My 2001 dodge ram 1500 quad cab automatic transmission with only 84600 miles just died without warning or slipping of the tranny,i took it to get repaired. it got a tranny flush but still didn't want to shift so i took it back in and in the investigation ,we realized that it needed a new tranny.theres no way a transmission should go out with only 84000 miles and with all the complaints i researched , i believe as well as all the complainants, that dodge should be liable and make a national recall for this continuing problem. *tr

2001 dodge ram, the dash is cracked and rotten all the way across. this new of a vehicle should not look like trash on the inside, and there is a real safety concern with all the dash components working correctly. there is a serious issue going on here, if every dodge dash is cracking. dodge transmission- normal highway use and the transmission is already junk, all other brands are still going fine on their first transmission and theirs are a lot older than mine. transmission just quit and nearly caused me to crash, this needs to be dealt with in a serious manner. *jb

With no warning, the transmission on our 2001 dodge ram 1500 quad cab pick up failed. it was during a turn in an intersection and power was lost and then surged. fortunately, on-coming traffic was able to avoid a collision. the vehicle had to be towed to the dealer where we were informed that no recalls were issued and that it was only covered under a 36,000 mile warranty (our vehicle had 56,000 miles). the entire transmission had to be rebuilt and the mechanic informed us that it was caused by a pump failure. the cost was $3200. we contacted daimler chrysler and were told that they didn't see a transmission failure as a safety concern. *jb

My dodge ram 1500 sport 4x4 went from park to drive without pressing the brake pedal while the ignition was off. my 3 year old pulled the shifter while standing in the front seat. the truck was parked on an incline and rolled down the hill and crashed into trees. causing approx. $5000.00 worth of damage. have been told that it should not do this by the dodge dealership. have heard several other complaints from other dodge owners about this same type of problem. fortunately, there were no injuries this time. but, this type of problem could have very easily caused major injury or death to my child. *nm

I am about to put 4th transmission in 2001-1500-dodge ram-4x4 i have never pulled a thing and have had it in 4x4 less than 10 times. my dashboard has cracked in several places and i understand this is a common problem with a dodge. the transmission problem is common in these trucks. the first transmission i had replaced was done by a dealer. the mechanic told me that the part that caused the problem was a part that dodge had redesigned. so basically dodge knew there was a problem and did not offer to pay for what they knew was a failure. *ak

I was going home from work, traffic real heavy stopped for traffic, started to go truck would not move, could not drive it out of the traffic or on the shoulder of the road. i had it towed found out the transmission was gone in it. had it fixed, very high priced. i know there has been a lot of complaints about the transmission, shouldn't it be a recall on this. it could have cost me my life or others. there was no other signs, other than it would not move. this year truck models has been a nightmare. first the dash spit in many places ,then the air condition went out and then the transmission. when it started it was only 3 years old, its not paid for. i will never buy a dodge again, unless the dodge company shows me that they are a bit concern. none of these things were fixed by them or a recall. i have been talking to a lot of the truck owners and they are having these same problems. there should at least be a recall on the transmission, thank god that it wasn't anyone hurt but it was very much dangerous. please look into this model, its not what i am paying for. thank you. *jb

I purchased a 2001 dodge ram 1500 quad cab, vin # 1b7hc13761j577007, from fowler dodge in oklahoma city. the vehicle was sold as is with engine problems. upon taking the vehicle to a mechanic, i was told that it will need over $2000 in repairs in order to be safe and reliable. the problems are as follows: #1 engine cylinder has burnt valve, not creating adequate cylinder pressure #5 cylinder has burnt valve, not creating adequate pressure #8 cylinder has burnt valve, not creating any pressure brakes rotors require replacement transmission slipping between 1st and 2nd gear headlights operate in full high beam only, all the time. faulty headlght switch the mechanic i took the vehicle to has reccommended that i get a lawyer, write to you and chrysler and give fowler dodge a chance to make the repairs under good faith. the mechanic also stated that on numerous dodge ram maintenance forums, this is a common problem. i have seen these first hand and it is true. i have seen posts with people stating that their dealer told them there was a problem with the cylinder heads which lead to burnt valves, requiring cylinder head replacement.

I own a dodge ram 1500 sport 4x4 which has 6700 miles on it. at 3800 miles the transmission went out. mark thomas motors in albany said they will replace the transmission because there isn't a reason for it to have gone out, at no cost to me. at 67k miles both the engine heads were cracked from running to lean and advanced timing. that cost me $1000 and mark thomas motors again adjusted the cost. althought i have been treated extremely well from this dealership i should not have experienced these problems this soon. various forums discuss these topics in great detail. dodge has known of these issues and has never addressed the problems. i'm now waiting for my f250 to be delivered, i'm done with dodge for now.*ak

I purchased my truck in sept 2000. after six weeks and 1100 miles i brought the truck back to the dealer stating that there was something wrong with the transmission. (it made noises and shifted very harshly.) the dealer said that they checked it, and that there was nothing wrong. at 36,000 miles the transmission blew. there were no gears at all - no forward no reverse. thankfully it happened close to home on a quiet road so no one was hurt or involved in an accident. the dealer re-built my transmission. when i drove it after that a grinding/chattering noise was occuring - i brought it back to the dealer. i left it there for a day (never got a call from the dealer) when i called them i was told that there was nothing wrong with the trans.. they had taken it for a ride and heard no noise. i returned to the dealer to take one of their technicians for a ride and they in fact heard the noise i was referring to. they have now had my car more than twenty three days. (not in a row. i have had to bring it to them on four different occasions, and again take the technician for yet another ride) i am writing this now because i believe i am entitled to a new transmission and the dealer says no and keeps trying to rebuid the old one.*ak

Is a 2001 dodge ram 1500 susposed to come out of park without touching the brake pedal? the truck came out of gear from park to reverse and caused $2500 worth of damage. the engine was running in this case. however, my 3 year old granddaughter was able to take the truck from park to reverse while standing on the seat. the truck was parked at that time on a inclining driveway so it rolled only to the street. chevrolet products, i know, have a safety feature which requires the break pedal to be pressed in order for the vehicle to come out of park. *ak

Re:service issue upon purchase, was told by dealer no codes, yet recieved constant engine warning light. another dealer in s.c. addy dodge, charged $270 to fix, while on vacation there which made the problem worse by illuminating more dash lights. addy dodge then stated i needed a torge convertor for $2200. the '01 ram had 32k miles and ran fine with no shift problem however i was sold a convertor on the premise it would not make it home after the first repair the day before. i drove out to the dealer to see for myself and the truck was completed in record time, left in front of the dealer who could not provied the old parts. i paid for the unit and had addy dodge deliver it to my vacation condo. 2 hours later it was stolen from the 5th floor of the condo. no other stolen vehicle history at that address, one way in and out and many other bikes and trucks on floors 1-5. i suspect the entire episode related to the dealer and cannot get help from chrysler as the vehicle was out of warranty in time yet lustine dodge of woodbridge could not find this issue from point of sale to repair at another dealer.

On 9/1/2003 at approximately 8:40 p.m. my son was driving our 2001 dodge ram pick-up on us 23 south between omer, michigan and standish, michigan. i was in the passenger seat in the front and my husband was in the back seat. all of a sudden there was a loud screeching noise and we went into the oncoming lane of northbound traffic. my son kept saying he could not control the truck. he was able to get the truck back in the southbound lanes and the truck kept fishtailing. all of a sudden the truck took a very hard right and we went through the ditch with coattails into the farm field and rolled the truck. when we stopped moving and we were all out of the truck some people who stopped, we asked them what happened and they said all they saw was headlights flying in the air and it looked like we lost a tire. with the police there he asked my son if he had fallen asleep my son said no that all of a sudden he could not control the truck. the police then thought we had a flat tire but upon looking for the tire in the farm field it was discovered that the back drivers side wheel had broke at the axle right at the spindle. all lug nuts and brake pads were still intact inside of the wheel and it was not flat. also where the axle broke off the wheel the metal was shining and crackling. none of us, luckily, were seriously injured scraps, bruises, and a lot of pulled muscles. none of us went to the hospital. we do felt lucky that it happened where it did since 10 more minutes up the road we would have been on i-75 south in holiday traffic and things i am sure would have been different. we do feel and with anyone we have talked with that this was a manufacturer defect of poor metal not being heat treated correctly. *la

Per dealer service advisor, my trucks wheel sub-assembly was damaged from an over-torqued center nut (during manufacture assembly). this condition caused the bearings to seize and superheat, they have been cutting into the axle and the heat expansion caused the brakes to fail (locked on, but steering has not been pulling). parts needing replacement include: axle; caliper; hub and bearings; rotor; center nut; center cap.

Dear sir/mam, i purchased a 2001 dodge ram new. after approximately 10,000 miles i heard abnormal squealing as i turned onto other streets at a low speed. i also noticed uneven tire wear. i was advised by the dodge dealership that the vehicle had no defects and to seek out the tire manufacturer. in february 2007 with approximately 58,400 miles on the truck i was traveling through town and heard a clunking noise coming from my rear end. i located a mechanic that opened up my differential pan and found metal pieces laying in the pan. my truck has a limited slip differential with 4:10 gears. this layout of gears is part of the heavy duty off road package dodge offered with their trucks at the time of my purchase. my mechanics diagnosis was that the posi- traction spacers had exploded as they had appeared to have stuck together. the pieces of metal then eventually tried to travel through the ring and gear causing chipping. the end result is to having the rear differential completely repaired at a cost with parts and labor exceeding $1300.00. i recalled back to my original complaint with dodge of the excessive tire squealing and uneven tire wear at 10,000 miles and based upon my knowledge believe that the tires were squealing while turning onto other streets as the rear end was locked up in the posi traction mode. i contacted dodge several times and spoke with their chief customer representative by the name of pat. dodge stated at the end of each conversation that they could not assist me in this issue even after i advised them of this safety issue in their dodge trucks. i have spoke and located four other dodge owners in my town that have had to repair their dodge truck rear ends. after observing the metal pieces in the differential and from some personnel experience from a previous incident in a friends truck years ago i made the following determination, the pieces that explode in the differential will make a clunking noice in the differential. *jb
