 The agency opened this investigation based on 30 complaints alleging that the hoods on model year (my) 2000 and 2001 dodge ram pickup trucks flew up and blocked the driver's vision.these vehicles have a primary hood latch and a secondary (backup) hood latch.the secondary latch is designed to secure the hood if the primary hood latch is not properly closed or otherwise malfunctions.in these complaints, the secondary hood latch malfunctioned, apparently due to corrosion, and did not latch.dodge conducted recall 01v-040 in 1999 to address similar problems on model year 1994-1997 dodge ram pickup trucks.the information chrysler provided in response to odi's information request letter indicated that the my 2000 and 2001 vehicles were equipped with secondary hood latches with stainless steel return springs, as opposed to the earlier recalled trucks that had zinc coated carbon steel return springs.the recalled components were susceptible to corrosion-induced failure due to the type of material used, whereas the corrosion failures in the newer models appear to be due to lubrication loss over time (regular application of grease is advised per instructions in the owners' manual). odi's review of chrysler's warranty, complaint, and injury data for the 2000 and 2001 vehicles indicates that the rates for subject vehicles are low and are declining.a potential defect trend has not been identified.this investigation is closed.

 We purchased our new ram truck feb 23rd, 2001 & have kept it garaged when not in use, serviced as required by dodge, washed & waxed as needed & used the best vinyl protectant available on the interior to keep our truck looking new. suddenly a crack appeared on the passenger side of the dash that makes a very distracting rubbing crunching noise when the vehicle is in motion. we feel dodge is aware of using inferior materials in the dash of ours and others trucks & that a recall should be made to correct this defect. this is such an awful, ugly defect that it lessens the selling & trade in value of these vehicles & the owners should not have to take this hit due to the decision of dodge to use inferior materials in the manufature of these trucks. *tr

 Since approximately, nov 2009, the entire dash of this vehicle has been slowly cracking and deteriorating, several pieces have fallen inside the dash which make retrieveing the broken pieces impossible. there are holes in the dash as well as numerous cracks, my concern is this ongoing issue will lead to a major collapse of the dash driving down a road, and or the unretrievable pieces rubbing on wires and causing a short resulting in a fire. i have tried to reason with daimler chrysler corp, but all i get is there is nothing we can do. i have never had such a issue with the dash cracking and deteriorating that this is a concern as well as a safety hazard for myself as well as other dodge owners. (the area i am trying to describe is from the top of the dashboard clear to the windshield ) all i would like to do is get the dash replaced, so i can pass this vehicle on to one of my kids without worries of any further incidents thanks for your time, i look forward to discussing this matter with you. *tr

 The dashboard had one crack in it when it had about 38,000 miles, then at about 40,000 miles the dash started cracking worse and now at 52,000 miles it has cracked so bad there are large pieces of the dash broken completely out of it. this is a very common problem with 98-06 dodge ram's and dodge knows about the problem. my main concern is with the large pieces being broken out. if you get into an accident large pieces of the dash could go flying and injure someone or when and if the airbag deploys the force of that could cause these pieces to go flying or more pieces to break off and go flying, which could be very dangerous in a collision. *tr

 The dash of my 2001 dodge ram 1500 is cracked and broken so badly that it is a serious safety concern in a crash. during airbag deployment, or the forces incurred during a crash, shards of plastic from the dash can strike the occupants causing serious injury or death. this is a widespread problem among dodge ram trucks of this date range. it is such a widespread problem, in the interest of occupant safety, dodge should recall and replace the dashes.

 The dash continues to fall apart, the dash bezel surrounding the gauges is falling down on to the steering wheel. the dash went from a few minor cracks, to holes in the dash, to a full collapse. every bump on the road another piece falls off. i am worried about the broken pieces flying toward my passengers or myself in the event of a motor vehicle accident or other driving hazards. this is obviously a safety issue and needs to be addressed. nothing has been done yet to correct the failure yet, i have been using an alternate vehicle. dodge needs to take responsibility for this defect and fix it.

 Dashboard started to crack near defrost vents. eventually they worked their way up. driver side is cracked and there is a hole in the middle of the dash. passenger side is cracked all the way up to the top of the airbag housing. there is also a hole on that side as well. i feel this is a saftey issue that if the airbag goes off on the passenger side. the plastic pieces fill fly around inside the cab causing injury

 My company owns a 2001 dodge ram 1500 pickup truck. purchased it used approximately 3 years ago and within a short time dashboard started cracking and caving in. i thought mine was an isolated problem, but i did research and found many complaints about the dodge pick trucks doing this. it is not under warranty by dodge but it should, with so many complaints with the same problem.some of the complaints said wiring were severed and electrical problems from the cave ins. my is now very serious and i am afraid the same problems will occur from this. dodge is aware of this problem but has no recall. i want dodge to replace this as soon as possible at their expense. they should take responsiblity for the safety hazards from their vehicles. thank you lora serviss

 Tl- the contact owns a 2001 dodge ram 1500. the contact was driving approximately 45 mph and noticed the passenger side dashboard exhibited several large cracks. in addition, the air conditioner leaked coolant. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for inspection. the air conditioner coil needed to be replaced. the technician advised that the dashboard must be removed during the air conditioner service repair. however, due to the severe defects of the dashboard a new replacement was required before the repair could be performed. the vehicle had not been repaired at the time of the complaint. the failure mileage was unknown.

 We own a 2001 dodge ram club cab. my husband bought this truck used but in great condition february 2006. when purchased it had a tiny crack in the dash up near the windshield nothing worth making a big deal of. over the last four years so many cracks have appeared you cant tell it used to be one piece! one time i was driving and heard a noise, turning off the radio and stopping the truck i looked up to find the dash literally breaking apart before my eyes. these cracks are the entire width of the truck. driver side to passenger side. dodge needs to take responsibility for their product. since when are they exempt from having to own up to their failures. it is a shame that they are ruining their own name by turning their heads to this obvious problem. they make some great trucks, so why would they want to ruin their own reputation by not taking care of this? *tr

 I have a 2001 dodge ram 1500, when it was only 4 years old the dash started cracking. since then, the entire top of the dash is collapsed and cracks are appearing in the frame as well as the lower dash. shards of plastic from the dash went into the blower for the ac and came out of the vents. if i didn't wear glasses anyway the shards could have damaged my eyes. i had to replace the fan's squirrel cage due to the damage from pieces of dash. since then the glove compartment fell out of the lower dash and landed on my sons foot. no serious injury but cuts and a bruise. dodge needs to step up to the plate and fix these instead of pretending that this is not a problem. i love my truck but if they don't fix this issue, next time i'll buy a ford. *tr

 I bought a used 2001 dodge ram 1500 ext. cab 1/2 ton pick-up truck in december of 2008 and my dash boards had no cracks in it at that time ,but my dash board is now cracking and collapsing. as far as i know dodge does not have a recall at this time. but there is alot of problems with the dash boards cracking and collapsing onto the electrical wiring causing shorts. from either exposure to sun light or the parts of the dash boards falling onto the electrical components is causing problems due to inferior products being used to make the dash boards. is there anyway to make dodge fix this problem? *tr

 Like many others, the dash fell apart...you aren't doing a thing about it until what? someone dies? 2001 dodge ram 1500 truck. everyone i talk to knows someone whose truck did the same thing. if we are in a wreck and the airbag doesn't deploy due to the support system being missing....falling apart totally....then if we die, will something be done to make chrysler stand good for the repairs? i have contacted them and they want us to pay 800 for our part. no...it is their widespread defect and we will not pay a penny. we have had a fire in the dash as everything is open to the elements now....we had to stop on the side of the road and crawl up under and find the wires burning. whenever you turned on the key, it smoked and burned. finally, after the truck was towed home, he traced the wire to the heated mirrors and removed it. waiting for the next fire, i guess. what a shame for chrysler to take bailout money and not help customers and ensure their safety. will someone please step up????? *tr

 I own a 2001 dodge ram 1500 club cab. i bought the vehicle used with only 2,000 miles on it. with in approx. 3 years the dash started to crack, these cracks have become holes, to the point that my whole dash has collapsed. the frame around the front of the dash has also cracked to the point that only one area at the bottom is holding it on the vehicle. i am very concerned that this will cause a serious accident one day, and am asking that you look into having chrysler create a recall on this situation. thank you for your time! *tr

 The dashboard of my 2001 ram 1500 pickup recently started cracking for no apparent reason. the cracks were straight line cracks from the screw holes on the passenger side and not the spiderweb type that result from exposure. yesterday a piece broke off over the ventilation intake and fell into the dash and suddenly black smoke began pouring out of the vents. a travel fire extinguisher had to be emptied into the vent system to keep the cab from becoming engulfed. chrysler says there is no recall even though i have found hundreds of complaints about this same problem. if one of my friends did not have the extinguisher in their car this might have ended with loss-of-life - mine. the vehicle smells like smoke whenever it is started and i am concerned that it will catch fire again if i attempt to drive it. *tr

 I have a 2001 dodger ram 1500 that i bought used around nov. 2005. when i bought it i didn't really notice anything wrong with the dash, but then a few months later around 50,000 miles, i noticed a couple of cracks near the windshield going across the defrost vents. since then my dash has about 12-15 cracks in it all going from the windshield all the way to the instrument bezel and the area near the passenger airbag. i contacted chrysler about the situation about a year ago when it started to get real bad and they told me to take it to an authorized dealer and have a diagnostic ran on it (it is a plastic dash, what are you going to run). after having a certified chrysler mechanic inspect the dash and tell me yep, its cracked and told me that it is a very common problem due to bad plastic, i then called chrysler back and they said that there was not a recall on that item, the vehicle is too old and too many miles for them to replace it and that now i know that i have to replace the dash. the dealer then told me that the dash was on back order for about 2 years. the very sharp pieces of the dash now stick up and out toward the passengers in certain areas and weather conditions. it also started cracking the instrument bezel too. i am just waiting for the whole dash to fall apart on day. obviously this is a major problem with 2001 dodge rams and i think that chrysler should take responsibility for their poor craftsmanship. *tr

 I purchased a used 2001 dodge ram 1500 slt laramie 2x4 in may 2005 from cutter dodge in hawaii with 32,000 miles.. the truck was flawless. in the beginning of 2007 my dashboard began to crack. i have taken excellent care of the truck as far as maintenance and protective measures to prolong the truck. i contacted the dealership and they said i would have to pay for a new dashboard with parts and labor it was quoted at $2100.00. i've researched online and through networking that everyone who owns a 2000-2003 dodge ram has a bad dashboard. it seems to be a safety issue, being the majority of the cracks are above the passenger side airbag. i have purchased a dashmat to try and prolong what is left of the dashboard, and at the same time upset that dodge will not replace the dashboards, that are faulty. i've owned older trucks that didn't have dashboards that cracked or fell apart. could someone look into this? *tr

 I now have two ram 1500 trucks with dash top failures here in texas. i was hit from the rear in my 2000 ram 1500 and plastic pieces from the already cracked and cracking dash hit me in the face as it exploded on impact causing many minor facial cuts but none in my eyes. being blinded caused me to loose control of my vehicle. i then hit a telephone pole. air bag deployment occurred that cut both air bags on both sides with more shards of the dash. my 2001 ram 1500 also has a severely cracked dash and is getting much worse. this occurred within 6 months of purchase. chrysler corp. refuses to respond and the dealership will not respond with any help claiming they are not responsible plus they have no parts or any way to fix the problem. they claim there are no plans for the parts to be manufactured either. this problem has become an epidemic to ram owners and will someday become and cause serious and potentially fatality problems. accident reports are not showing the dash as a problem. they indicate the cracked dash was caused by the accident and is a result. insurance companies claim it is a manufactures problems. the owner takes the hit unless he can convince the insurance adjuster to total the vehicle. the present political situation nation wide is stopping my pleas to my representative on my complaints and pleas for assistance to fall on dead ears. dodge dealers are hiding the fact that a cracked dash ram 1500 trade ins are being junked to hide this major issue. thusly it is not getting the proper attention. at local auto auctions the dodge ram 1500's do not sell. as a note: there is also a major transmission problem as noted by most transmission shops all over the country. to my knowledge, nothing is being done to correct many and most of dodge ram 1500's problems because of the dashes. get them off the road at the owners expense is chrysler corporations plan as per the factory representative when he was cornered. i have bought my last dodge. *tr

 I, like countless others, own a 2001 dodge ram pick up in which the dashboard is disintegrating. chrysler/dodge refuses any responsibility although they know there is a problem. full cost to repair is over $1,000.00. i have been told a variety of excuses such as parked in the sun or having used interior surface protectors. through my own research i've found that the most likely named culprit is the use of non-virgin or recycled plastic or polymers as a certain percentage of forming material. my dash started as a small crack between the windshield and defroster vent, and has now begun spreading towards the passenger side seat, currently 8 inches. this is not just a cosmetic issue but also a safety issue as well. imagine what shards of plastic can do during a small fender bender or to wiring and equipment behind the dash. from what i've been reading about other's experiences i can soon expect the entire dash cover to continue cracking and ultimately fall apart. it's obvious that chrysler/dodge simply expects to wait everyone out as they trade in or sell their trucks, especially in this day of unstable fuel prices. however, many of us rely on our trucks for daily life, buy with the intent of keeping them for many years in good running shape and appearance and expect the manufacturer to be responsible to the owners of their vehicles. i feel that chrysler/dodge is just dodging the issue. *tr

 After reading this link: http://www.local6.com/news/13227601/detail. html i realized that i was not alone in dealing with problems with the dashboard. at 11:45 am may 15, 2007, i contacted daimler-chrysler's consumer line. i was told that i would have to pay a dodge dealership between $50 and $60 just to have my dash looked at, and then if a defect of materials was determined, daimler-chrysler would offer assistance in having the dash replaced. if there was a manufacturing defect, i feel it should be the responsibility of the manufacturer to correct any such defects. as of right now, i personally have yet to experience any safety issues regarding this problem. but after reading the article i linked earlier, it has become a concern.*ak

 This summer the dash on my 2001 dodge ram 1500 truck cracked while driving the truck. the truck had only about 35,000 miles on it when the dash cracked. the crack is from the windshield to the end of the dash. i have read on the internet that is is a problem whit these dodge trucks. *nm

 I have a 2001 dodge ram purchased used in 2006. it had 1 or 2 small cracks in the dash at the time of purchase. i wasn't too concerned about them, but then within a year or 2 the cracks multiplied. i then began to have issues with large pieces of the dash completely breaking and falling out. i now have multiple giant holes in the dash. i didn't realize this was an actual issue with other dodge rams until i searched out to replace it. i have discovered that 1000's of people are having the same issue, far from being labeled isolated. this issue should have been handled via a recall years ago.

 I was driving home on the tollway from the airport in my 2001 dodge ram when the hood flipped up and smashed into my windshield. i had to slow down in traffic and get to the side without being able to see in front of me. now my hood is damaged, my windshield shattered, and damage to my roof. i investigated of past concerns and found numerous reports of this happening to 2000 and 2001 dodge ram trucks, a report was even done by the nhtsa but was found not that important apparently. this could have been a serious incident and was very lucky to get out of it unharmed.

 Purchased a 2001 dodge ram from local dealer, and didn't have it 6 months and noticed the dash cracked and came apart. took it to the local dealer several times and asked to fix. they refused, stating it was not a recall and it was due to sun. i tried to tell them that the windows are tinted and it is garage kept when not in motion, but they refused to answer. now it is on several automotive blogs and sites all over the us with hundreds of people with the same issue with the same year truck package. it is now broken so badly its causing failure to defrost the front windshield and several electrical issues including the headlights going out while driving, speakers cutting off and interior lights going out randomly. it has now cracked so that the heat and air is no longer routed correctly and is causing poor driving conditions. my wife backed into another vehicle because of this... they want 1000 dollars to fix and parts are hard to find.

 Dash started cracking about four years ago with a mileage of 55000. dash was replaced at owners expense two years ago when dash had colapsed. one year later the dash began to crack once again and i learned of many other poeple with the same problem. i was reluctant to spen 1000 dollars to replace it again. since then the dash has colapsed again but this time spall peices cut some wires under the dash causing the headlights not to work. this is an extreme safety issue and dont know what would have happened had i been on the highway doing 65-70 mph when the lights went out. reading the number of complaints i feel the dash is defective and a safety concern. chrysler shoud recall vehicles to correct problem. *cn

 Last november on my way to school, i was involved in a rollover accident while getting onto the highway. the roads were bad and extremely icy. however, i lost control of the truck while getting onto the highway, put it into 4x4 and corrected myself, then the 4x4 went out (which commonly happened), lost control, hit the median sideways, and rolled the truck. the problem was during the rollover, 1. i had to push myself back into the seat to engage my seatbelt, and 2. the back two in roof roll guards broke. i was only going about 20 - 25mph when i rolled and the back window smashed down several inches. the collapsing of the roof should not have happened as bad. the median had over 6 of snow in it. if a person was sitting in the back seat, he/she would have been seriously injured. truck is considered totaled. model is a 2001 dodge 1500 4x4 quad cab short box slt/laramie w/the 5.2l magnum v8. *tr

 Left rear of quad cab not welded completely. quad cab door and drivers' side door do not close completely. you can hear them rattle when driving. this was reported to two separate dealers and the factory representative and chrysler corporation. they offered $500.00 for the defect. this is a safety defect as well as a value defect. we fear the drivers' side door may open, as well as the quad cab door, in an accident.

 The consumer noticed a deep groove cut into each front tire near the inside of the rim caused by the lower a frame contacting the tire when turning. the mechanical turn stops did not reach their mark before the tire reached the a frame. the consumer found the same problem in two other dodges of the same year. (the 2003 models had a different design) the consumer may do more hard turns around on field roads, but this may be a hidden problem waiting to blow out in low speed turns. *ak *scc *jb
