My truck stalls as i come to a stop. this happens probably about 4 times a month since the date above. the dealership hasn't been able to find the problem. i have read on forums online that a ton of other people are having the same problem. some say it has to do with erg valve and it should be recalled. they said they replace the egr valve and the problem is fixed.

Engine stalls randomly for no reason
02/16/201162500
My 2004 dodge ram 1500 pick up with a 5.7 liter engine began to stall upon braking and coming to a stop. the engine would lose rpm and die (stall) leaving me with no brakes or steering. it would restart easily but occur again frequently. took the vehicle to a repair shop and after extensive and expensive diagnosis was found to have a failing throttle body and associated electrical failure. a new throttle body was obtained from dodge (different part number from original) and installed. total cost for the work was approximately $2,500.00. my research shows that this problem is extensive in this model and is dangerous.

2004 ram 1500 5.7 hemi stalls at low engine speeds, often at stop signs, traffic lights, or parking lot maneuvers. will usually start immediately back up, sometimes requires slight accelerator pressure when cranking in order to obtain self-sustaining engine speed. during decelerations, engine rpm is erratic and will often encounter a drop in rpms to approximately 400 rpm before engine dies. issue seems to be more common when engine is cold, but has occured under all conditions. this has been a persistent problem for about 1.5 years, happening anywhere from once a day to a dozen times. multiple dealerships and mechanics have looked at this, without result. the computer has been updated, the sensors, egr valve, and intake manifold cleaned, and the throttle body has been replaced. still not fixed. vehicle has been well maintained . this is an expensive, dangerous, and frustrating condition. having 3 kids in the car at any given time also adds to my frustration.

Recently my ram 1500 has begun to stall for no reason. no check engine light will come on and no sputtering. just stalls when i slow down for a light or making a turn. it will usually starts right up and act like nothing happened. other times it will take about a minute to start. thankfully i have not been rear ended, yet.

Truck shuts off while driving - i had to stand on the brakes and steering was almost impossible. this happened while attempting to merge onto early morning traffic in i95 in ft lauderdale where everybody is going 70-75 mph. if that truck had hit me, i and several others around me would have died. we were just plain lucky. i had it towed to the dealer and they found nothing wrong. this happened about a dozen times and i kept fixing things which were not broken before i did a little research and found out this truck is famous for this problem. 2 dealers will not even return my calls when i start to discuss this problem. they either know about this problem and do not want to get involved or realize this cannot be fixed. i have to drive this vehicle across florida to bring it back to where i purchased it. my brother is flying down from boston to follow me in case i have trouble. if delaer gives me a negative response i am planning on suing chrysler and the dealer as i really believe they knew about this problem when they sold me the truck there are hundreds of others with the same exact issue with the same exact truck. why has nhtsa not done something? *cn

Since 2004 my 2004 ram 1500 hemi has died numerous times (have dated, weather, time, and intersections). it is impossible to tell you how often because this engine has a mind of it's own. i have had my computer chip flashed by dodge dealerships at least twice and currently it is at tom matson dodge in auburn wa 98002 because in the last month has died four times. they called with a report today, did not die on us, come back and pick it up. *tr

Engine failure. on several occasions the engine would stall upon acceleration. my 2004 dodge ram 1500 stalled on me after driving onto a patch of ice causing my steering wheel to become difficult to steer and the truck started sliding down an icy street, off the road and down a mountain until it came to a stop on a tree. since the truck stalled and i was not able to restart it in time. the truck is now a total loss. the frame bent in the front drivers area of the truck, the steering became lose and the back passenger quarter panel is damaged which will not allow the tail gate to come down. *tr

I own a 2004 dodge 1500 quad cab. at about 35,000 miles when i came to a stop my truck would just die. there would be no check engine lights or anything to make you think something was wrong. i took it and had a diagnostic ran on it there would never be any code. to this date my truck is still doing the same thing. i have searched the web and found that i am not alone. dodge knows that this problem exists. i have called to be told that they would have to have a diagnosis before they would fix the problem. that is impossible since no code will show up. please help. this is a very dangerous situation. *jb

Before the occurrences, my 5.7l ram 1500 would sputter on idle and when first put into gear, and the check engine light would come on for about 25 miles and then go back off. when the code was checked for the light, the forward passenger-side oxygen sensor was showing voltage high. i replaced the sensor, cleared the codes and everything was fine for a while. the first event happened when i was making a left turn on a small road-when i turned, the truck died. i didn't notice that the truck had died until i felt the power steering go out, and then i realized i was stuck in the middle of the road. i then had to crank the engine 5 or 6 times before it started again, and, when it did, the check engine light was back on. the same problem happened 2 more times that day. when taken to the dealer, an engine diagnostic was run, and the same code was showing up. the mechanics put about 45 miles on it trying to duplicate the problem, but were unable to. the problem stopped for about 2 weeks, and then it started sputtering again. when taken again to the dealer, 4 cylinders were showing a mis-fire, and the same oxygen sensor was showing voltage high. the mechanic informed me that the cylinders were mis-firing due to bad spark plugs (which were not due for service yet). i have changed the spark plugs, and my truck has died twice since then. this has become more than frustrating because i bought the truck used with 39,000 miles (roughly) on it. the mechanic charged me for my last visit because different codes showed up, so it was a different problem-even though the truck was in the shop for the same conditions. if some actions aren't taken, i am ready to file for lemon laws. *jb

I own a 2004 dodge ram with the 5.7 hemi engine. the engine in my truck has stalled on numerous occasions when slowing down and going into a turn. once on the freeway at 65 mph! this happens most when turning on city streets or pulling into a parking lot. the dealer has flashed the pcm 3 times and it still has the problem. the last time it was in for this problem the dealer screwed with the timing, fuel air mixture and idle all in poor attempt to keep it from stalling. the results are poorer fuel mileage, occasional black smoke from exhaust, stalls at idle, the engine stumbles and soot build-up in the exhaust pipes. oh, it stills stalls while turning sometimes. the dealer and the regional dodge rep are both dragging their feet. the truck is unsafe to drive. it has 20 tires and wheels(factory)which make it even harder to steer when the engine dies and you also lose the power brakes too. real waker upper. *jb

Dt: the consumer stated that the vehicle stalled unexpectedly. this happened while sitting still and just recently while driving at a speed of 15 mph. there was no prior warning before stalling, and no dashboard lights came on to indicate a problem. no lights on the dashboard came on after stalling. the vehicle will immediately start right back up. this happened for six months at least. the idle was jumping. the consumer thought that the idling and stalling problems were related. the vehicle had idle problems since january 21, 2004. the vehicle had been to the dealership three times, and was on the way back to the dealership. the dealership could not find any problem with the truck because it was intermittent. the manufacturer was contacted, and referred the customer back to the dealership. also, the manufacturer told the consumer that this problem belonged to the dealer. *ak (11/08/05) *sc

Dodge ram 1500 w/5.7 hemi stalls. this incident has occurred dozens of times, and appears to occur most frequently during no or light throttle conditions such as driving through intersections or down a long grade. stalls have also occurred when switching from drive to reverse (in parking lots) and during the first start-up of the day if the vehicle is shifted into reverse immediately after starting. ninety-five percent of the time, there is no warning (ie, stumbe) that the engine is experiencing a problem. we have attempted to have this problem diagnosed at many dealerships, none of whom were able to retrieve any codes. due to our persistence and concern, two local dealerships have since refused to work on our truck. thus far, dodge dealers have attempted to blame this problem on a poorly connected battery and have supposedly adjusted the throttle body blade to allow more air into the engine during light/no throttle conditions. i am quite familiar with electronic engine controls and find this repair rather disturbing. it is not yet known if this repair has affected vehicle emissions. in light of pe05-027, i will be forwarding relevant paperwork and correspondence to the attention of stephen speth.

2004 dodge ram 4.7l automatic transmission. the design of the radiators with the plastic sides on the aluminum radiator core is defective. during the winter the radiator leaks on the passenger side near the coupling of the plastic to the aluminum. i think this is a safety concern since vehicles can overheat without proper anti-freeze levels, and leave owners stranded on the side of highways, and roads. let alone it's not good for the environment nor animals that enjoy the taste of anti-freeze. this is the second time this has happened to me with this truck. i replaced the radiator with the same type a year ago, and now it's doing the same thing as before. this is an o.e.m. radiator.

I have the 2004 dodge ram 1500 with the 5.7 hemi. the truck inconsistently stalls for no reason. sometimes after fueling up the motor will surge and sputter before stalling. most of the time the motor starts right back up only to stall again just a short time later. other times the motor will not restart for several minutes and attempts. it only stalls when traveling below 25mph and sitting at idle. i noticed it normally idles around 700rpm, but just before a stall it will dip to 500rpm and feel as it there is a slight miss in the motor. nothing i have tried has fixed this issue and the repair shops have failed to duplicate or diagnose this problem. after checking around i have noticed this seems to be a common problem and i think dodge should do something to fix this. whenever the engine fails i lose steering and brakes. last week it stalled on the interstate with no pull off room and it would not restart for several minutes nearly causing a rear end collision between a big rig and myself. this is a serious safety issue. *tr

My husband bought our 2004 dodge ram 1500 (hemi) in jan 2004 and has about 130,000 miles now. we had problems with the breaks and rotors just like every one else on here in march of 2005 when driving down the highway with cruise on and the truck lost all power. the rpm went to zero but the truck was still running . to get the rpm to come back on we would have to turn off the truck and restart the truck. every time the electrical light would come on, all while in traffic at 65-70 mph. this went on from march 2005- jan 2007. we have been to the dealer many times and they couldn't get any codes to come up. then in january 07 we got off the highway to stop at a store and had to make a left turn into the store. the truck made a loud pop noise and died. when my husband started the truck back up it was sputtering and wouldn't stay running without keeping the truck above 2000 rpms. i took the truck to my dad who is a robertson tire repair tech. he couldn't get any codes to come up. then about 45 min after letting the truck sit he ran the codes again and got about fifteen codes. we replaced all the sensors and it didn't help so went to the dealer again. they couldn't get any codes and couldn't tell us what was wrong. why it wouldn't stay running. so i just thought i would file my complaint and let everyone know what happens after its done stalling what happens next. i will not buy another dodge. *nm

Truck started stalling a few weeks ago for my wife. i finally had the chance to drive it and it fell flat on its face. my entire family was almost put into a telephone pole at 45 mph since the truck lost all power. this time it didn't stall it just ran with no acceleration and held at 4,000 rpms. extensive attempts for cooperation by dealership and daimler chrysler have led me to believe i bought a really expensive coffin. i established the tsb codes w/ both and was left hansen high and dry. i got that sure we'll help, here' s a new truck but we can't pay off yours even though we sold it to you. and the we're not responsible for this even though we acknowledge the problem is our fault. i will not purchase a dodge vehicle again. shame on dodge!!!! i don't really blame the dealership, but they themselves should have checked all this with the truck before selling it to me. daimler chrysler representatives who decided this isn't a problem should be made should be punished by law to drive these faulty vehicles until they are injured or killed. maybe then these problems will be repaired. *nm

Originally had a problem with the egr position sensor and the dealership re programmed this with new software this took place 02/07/06. seemed to take care of original stalling issue. *nm then on 12/2/06 i was exiting the freeway and my truck was shaking bad. i could tell that the engine was misfiring. if the engine went down to an idle it would stall, which it did several times, leaving all system components powerless (no steering or brakes etc). i had my pregnant wife in the truck with me at the time. putting her in danger this way left me less than thrilled. we took it to a dealership right away. they told us that cylinder #4 was not firing (no compression) and two other cylinders had limited compression. they ended up calling some dodge tech. line. since the dealership said that they couldn't find a tsb regarding this problem. turned out there is one in existence #02021 from 11/4/2002. the tech line said it sounds like one or more valve springs could be broken. the dealership in fact took the valve covers off and sure enough there is a broken valve spring. they told us several others seem weak. i have 71,500 miles on the truck and you guessed it surprise the warranty expired at 70,000. this is going to cost around $1200.00 out of pocket!!! i want dodge to back this problem. there are alot of discussion boards with innocent people that have the same problem. a broken valve spring is an obvious error on the engineers end of things...bad design.....faulty metal. this is not a wear and tear issue. i have heard that dodge is on their 3rd design on the valve springs for these trucks. obviously they are aware of the problem. if they have to keep re-manufacturing. but that puts the rest of us that have the original design in harms way. it is a very scary feeling to have you truck quit on you in the middle of rush hour traffic. thank god that nothing happened to me or my wife. *nm

Traveling at 40 mph truck started to shake. it then stalled out on a slow-braking turn. had to limp home and then to garage using one foot on brake and one on gas to keep the rpms up. initial diagnosis was a stuck air valve that made the fuel mixture too rich. several cylinders were missing. it turned out that two valve springs were broken. apparently this is pretty common. a lot of valve springs are being sold in the area. the truck had 73k miles on it and of course the warranty ran out at 70k. defective valve springs costing a couple of bucks cost me over $1000 in repairs. i was lucky that the block wasn't damaged. for a while we thought we needed a new engine. *jb

I was driving my 2004 dodge ram 5.7 liter hemi pick-up truck home from work on 03-02-06 and was making a right hand turn i was probably going about 20 miles per hr. and the truck just stalled out i almost hit the car in the opposing lane because there was no power so the brakes were at a loss and so was the steering i'm glad i wasn't going any faster than that. *nm

At less than 300 miles, shifted into 4 wheel drive while doing 65 mph on the interstate. taken to dealership and was told a wire was left loose and wrapped around another part causing the problem. also complained the truck was dying while driving. also told this was a wiring problem. at 19000 the tires needed replaced and at 80000 miles the oil pressure gauge dropped to 0. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated while driving under normal conditions and at any speed, the vehicle stalled. the vehicle was taken to the dealer on 6 occasions for this problem. the first 3 times the vehicle was inspected, the problem could not be duplicated. on the fourth time the pcm, map sensor and the ngc controller were replaced. this corrected the problem for only a short period of time. the stalling returned and the vehicle was taken back for inspection two more times however, no repairs were made. there is also a problem with the transmission, it has been overhauled 2 times and the vehicle is still having engine hesitation problems. the vehicle was taken to the dealer 5 times due to the abs. when the brakes were applied the rear end of the vehicle pulsates. no repairs were made to the abs and the manufacturer was alerted.

Stalling 2004 dodge hemi sport---stalls upon breaking or coasting at an intersection. brakes make high pitch ringing noise everytime but dealer says it has nothing to do with the other. been in 4 times for repair, co-pilot installed to try to retrieve alternative pictures of system since no codes were sent during shut down. dealer could not repeat stalling, nor could they retrieve any info with co-pilot. now chrysler has informed the dealer they are not to touch my vehicle any more for this issue since they can not repeat the stalling themselves. now i'm waiting to meet with the regional manager of chrysler to discuss buy back.

I was approaching a road that i was going to make a right turn on, after traveling on a highway at approximately 60 mph. when i had slowed enough to start to make my turn, the truck stalled without warning and i had to complete the turn without power steering to avoid hitting a car waiting to turn at the light. i am a fairly big guy and made the turn without incident but had to really pull on the steering wheel to turn it. if my wife had been driving she would not have been able to make the turn. this happened when the truck had approximately 500 to 1000 miles on it. it never stalled again since then. the truck now has 12000 miles on it.*ak

Dt*: the contact stated while driving 10 mph through the woods, the underbody skid plate collected massive amounts of road debris which caused a fire underneath the vehicle. this was determined after the contact observed large amounts of smoke and flames from underneath both sides of the underbody. the vehicle was driven to a nearby water hose where the fire was extinguished. there were no injuries were sustained. there was minor fire damage sustained to the remaining underbody and shield. after an extended period of time, the vehicle was driven to the dealer for further inspection who determined the original equipment skid plate on the vehicle was designed by another manufacturer for another type of vehicle. the manufacturer was alerted. a diagnostic test showed a fault with the evaporative emission system. updated 09/05/06. *jb

I have a 2004 dodge ram 1500 5.7 liter with 48k miles that has had numerous problems (e.g. erg valve replaced, power steering reservoir (currently being replaced), and engine stalling at an idle, while turning, while backing up, or coasting. the stalling occurs out of the blue as if someone flipped a switch causing the engine to die. the electrical stays on, just the engine dies. most of the time it starts right back up but sometimes it takes awhile. the stalling has happened numerous times and is very unpredictable. the stalling began about three - four months ago. i currently have it in for repairs at lee's summit dodge, lee's summit missouri. *tr

Second complaint - 2004 dodge ram 1500 quad cab hemi with 700 miles (i only had for 2 weeks) began stalling so i brought to the dealer for service. they said it was the egr valve and that they would need to order this part on national backorder. they retained my vehicle and have had it for 3 days. i keep calling and they say that they cannot get the part. i have called chrysler customer service and they cannot help. the delaer refuses to swap the part from his inventory because he does not want his inventory disabled, but it is fine with him if my car that i already paid 40k for is disabled. will write more when i know more. *ak
