Defect SummaryOn certain pickup trucks, the transfer case to transmission attaching fasteners may not be tightened correctly. this could cause the transmission adapter or transfer case housing to crack and leak fluid.
Consequence SummaryContinued operation can result in propeller shaft separation and damage to fuel system components, which could lead to a fuel leak. fluid and/or fuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source can cause an underbody fire.
Corrective SummaryDealers will retighten the transfer case to transmission fasteners. owner notification began on december 22, 2003. owners should contact daimlerchrysler at 1-800-992-1997.

Analysis of the complaint, field report and warranty data shows that the majority of stalling incidents in the subject vehicles appear to be related to the engine calibration concerns that daimlerchrysler addressed with service bulletins releasing revised pcm software.analysis of the complaints and odi's survey of owners of vehicles that received engine management software updates under tsb #18-013-05 show that these stalling incidents have the following characteristics: - they occur at low speeds, often during parking lot ordriveway maneuvers; - they occur during decelerations, such as braking for a stop sign or traffic signal; and - the operator is almost always able to immediately restart the vehicle.when compared with other safety defect investigations and recalls of conditions that result in stalling during low-speed deceleration with immediate engine restart possible, the failure rate in the subject vehicles is low.analyses of complaint and warranty data also show a declining trend.accordingly, this investigation is closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist.the agency will continue to monitor complaints and other information relating to the alleged defect in the subject vehicles and take further action in the future if warranted.see document file for additional information regarding this resume.

On may 16, 2005,odi opened preliminary evaluation pe05-027 to investigate complaints of engine stalling in model year 2004-05 dodge durango suvs and ram 1500 series pickups equipped with the 5.7l v8 engine.information provided by daimlerchrysler during pe05-027 indicated that a large percentage of the complaints are related to an idle undershoot condition that may cause the engine to stall during turning maneuvers.in february 2005, daimlerchrysler revised the powertrain control module software in production vehicles and issued a technical service bulletin (tsb 18-013-05) releasing the new software as a service remedy for the idle undershoot condition.the bulletin was superceded by tsb 18-013-05a in april 2005.daimlerchrysler believes that the failure rate for stalling while driving due to the idle undershoot condition is low and that the bulletin has adequately addressed the problem. since pe05-027 was opened, odi has continued to receive complaints from owners of the subject vehicles who allege experiencing engine stall incidents under all types of driving conditions.in some instances the stalling has continued after the vehicle received the service bulletin repairs.this investigation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea05-018) to further assess the scope, frequency, and safety consequences of the alleged defect in dodge durango and ram 1500/2500/3500 series pickup trucks.

I was driving at freeway speed, around 70 mph. suddenly, i heard a noise from the rear of the truck and i noticed my speedometer went to zero. i was still moving at the same speed. the fault code identified a failure in the speed sensor in the rear differential. i was out of warranty, so i pulled the differential cover off and found what was left of the speed sensor in the bottom of the housing. i also found pieces of what was later identified as c clips from my lsd clutch assembly. the inductive portion of the speed sensor protrudes into the differential housing and was hit by the flying pieces of c clips. the carrier bearing also had a grove cut into it by these clips as they worked their way out. i am told that if i had not caught this, it would have resulted in carrier bearing failure and lock up of my rear axle. i removed all of the metal c clip pieces and removed the remaining c clips that had not yet fallen out. i don't know if there is any connection, but my left rear leaf spring cracked in half on the lower main leaf. i had to replace the spring assembly at my cost. i now have a permanent whine at low speeds and currently have 125,000 miles on my truck. i am certainly glad that i found these metal pieces when i did! there appears to be many complaints regarding this failure in my truck model, ranging from model years 2003 through 2006 ram 1500 equipped with the 5.7 hemi. at this time, chrysler has not acknowledged the patterned failures in these rear differentials. *tr

While driving on the interstate, i heard a pop and saw smoke coming out of my truck. waiting for the tow, i noticed that the transfer case housing had cracked and had spewed oil all over the bottom of the truck causing the smoke. after some research i found that the 2004 dodge ram 1500 4x4 (my truck) had been recalled because the transfer case on a possible 500+ vehicles had not been torqued properly. the nhtsa summary states this could cause the transmission adapter or transfer case housing to crack and leak fluid. the campaign id number is 03v503000. according to chrysler the range of vins involved is 4j116316 through 4j174991. my vehicle, being 4956, is inside this range, but was not was not listed by chrysler (i'm assuming because it was one of the vehicles that had already been inspected or repaired). it seems more than coincidence to me that my truck was made in the same plant, in the same lot and inside the same vin range, and exhibited the same symptoms (a cracked transfer case housing), but chrysler customer service maintains that my vin is not included in the recall. i am currently facing more than $2k in repairs for a pickup truck with only 44k miles on it and it is a direct result of chrysler allowing this vehicle to slip through the cracks with safety recall no. c39. my vehicle has obviously not been inspected or repaired, and chrysler needs to make it right.

2004 ram 1500 5.7 hemi stalls at low engine speeds, often at stop signs, traffic lights, or parking lot maneuvers. will usually start immediately back up, sometimes requires slight accelerator pressure when cranking in order to obtain self-sustaining engine speed. during decelerations, engine rpm is erratic and will often encounter a drop in rpms to approximately 400 rpm before engine dies. issue seems to be more common when engine is cold, but has occured under all conditions. this has been a persistent problem for about 1.5 years, happening anywhere from once a day to a dozen times. multiple dealerships and mechanics have looked at this, without result. the computer has been updated, the sensors, egr valve, and intake manifold cleaned, and the throttle body has been replaced. still not fixed. vehicle has been well maintained . this is an expensive, dangerous, and frustrating condition. having 3 kids in the car at any given time also adds to my frustration.

Engine stalled while braking to turn left in a busy intersection. lost power steering and brakes. narrowly missed crashing into a light pole. the engine stalling occurred for the first time about three weeks ago. at that time it occurred twice in one week. took the car to shop where spark plugs were replaced but the problem was not corrected. engine stalled three times in thirty minutes today.

Truck started stalling a few weeks ago for my wife. i finally had the chance to drive it and it fell flat on its face. my entire family was almost put into a telephone pole at 45 mph since the truck lost all power. this time it didn't stall it just ran with no acceleration and held at 4,000 rpms. extensive attempts for cooperation by dealership and daimler chrysler have led me to believe i bought a really expensive coffin. i established the tsb codes w/ both and was left hansen high and dry. i got that sure we'll help, here' s a new truck but we can't pay off yours even though we sold it to you. and the we're not responsible for this even though we acknowledge the problem is our fault. i will not purchase a dodge vehicle again. shame on dodge!!!! i don't really blame the dealership, but they themselves should have checked all this with the truck before selling it to me. daimler chrysler representatives who decided this isn't a problem should be made should be punished by law to drive these faulty vehicles until they are injured or killed. maybe then these problems will be repaired. *nm

I have a 2004 dodge ram 1500 with 5.7 hemi i've owned since new. the truck will stall without warning at slow speeds and while turning it has always restarted. on some stalls with the lack of power steering and brakes it has been all i could do to not hit other cars. over the years my dodge dealer has offered no help since this doesn't produce a service code. now i see that this is a wide spread problem and a service bulletin (tsd 18-013-05) was issued that sounds like it may or may not correct the problem. a driver without the strength to handle the truck without power steering and brakes would be in real danger.

2004 ram 1500 quad cab 5.7l hemi. engine suddenly stalls when it reaches temperature if the vehicle is decelerating (stop or turn). the engine appears to fail to switch correctly from high to low idle and goes right to zero. this results in immediate loss of steering and significant safety hazard. this has continued to occur more frequently with time and by the online descriptions is getting to be fairly common. *tr

Engine stalling by 2004 dodge ram 1500-5.7l v8 engine. this has been a recurring issue and directly led to an accident causing over $10,000 in damage and near fatal injuries. further, this vehicle (and others i have become aware of) have been serviced at the dealership on time/schedule but this issue has never been addressed nor have they been recalled or repaired despite numerous complaints. fortunately the repairs were covered by insurance but the vehicle still has the same problem for which neither the local dealer nor chrysler-dodge et, al. has addressed this issue (although reading the files it is clear they spent hundreds of thousands of dollars and man hours to refute/dismiss this matter. *tr

Engine light came. didn't notice anything wrong with the truck. had a friend put it on the machine to find out what the code was. the code was p0404, egr something. the about a week later, while im driving, im going about 30 mph i let my foot off the gas and my truck stalls. a couple of days after that i was turning into a parking lot and my truck stalls again. each this happens i am able to put my truck into neutral and start it right up. i noticed that if i am stopped at a light or if i am starting my truck for the first time in the day when i begin to accelerate it it seems to run a little sluggish until i give it some more gas. no accidents have occurred and have not done anything to replace anyparts as of yet. i have a 7 year, 70,000 mile power train warranty and am not sure if this malfunction is covered. i noticed that when i looked up the defects under the investigations that what was happening to my truck was the same thing being investigated. thank you *tr

Failure of front wheel bearings on my 2004 dodge ram 1500 at 29,400 miles. resulted in loss of brakes almost causing an accident. wheel bearings were replaced, i do still have the old ones. the left front was so bad it was ready to seperate from the hub. i'm told by the dealer that this is a common problem although chrysler has not addressed it.*cn

Driving down road and felt and heard a loud bang under truck . emergency brake and abs lites came on and speedometer stopped working. immediatly went to the garage to have it checked. mechanic told me that the speed senser was broken and gear oil was leaking from the senser. when he removed the speed senser he noticed that the under side was distroyed. he then removed the differential cover and found that the retaining clips had come out and destroyed the differential unit. the differential unit and bearings were replaced with new dodge parts.

Driving at approximately 20 miles per hour across railroad tracks and heard a loud noise and my truck stopped. i had to have it towed and the garage said that the entire rear end is completely torn to shreds. *tr

Bought a 2004 dodge ram 1500 with 19,000 miles by 36,000 miles the abs light comes on thought it was a sensor dirty or bad, but took it to a garage and they said there was metal shavings on the sensor. none the less need to say is that the rear end is slowly going out. i put my faith in dodge never again! i will go and buy a ford. *tr

Mileage: 43,520 dealer performing service: vals summit dodge i have a 2004 dodge ram 1500. approximately 2 months ago i had to have both u-joints replaced due to squeaking. then today, i had to have the drive shaft replaced. the service manager informed me that the shaft was twisted and could not provide a reason for the twisting other than to explain that the drive shaft is made from a very light aluminum tube and this happens. there was no dings or damage. he also informed me that this is a very common problem with this truck and that he replaces 4-5 drive shafts per week. i was charged $108 as part of the deductible for the replacement for the drive shaft. this appears to be an obvious issue with the quality of the component. i spoke with chrysler customer service who could not assist me other than to tell me to send everything to the customer assistance center and they would see what they can do. *tr

Informed by dealer service advisor that rear axle needs to have clutches replaced. failure to have this service completed may result in catastrophic failure of rear end axle shafts which may cause axle shafts to fall out of housing resulting in possible injury and repairs amounting to several thousand dollars. this condition was reported to me while my vehicle was in for an oil change. my vehicle only has 32,000 miles on it but dealer said that this was a problem affecting my vehicle type. i feel that dodge should repair this problem immediately as it is appears that this is a defective serious condition. *tr

For the past couple weeks, my wife claimed to hear a strange sound from '04 ram 1500 quad cab. yesterday, while traveling on the turnpike with my children, she started to smell something burning, then heard a strange noise, finally some vibrations. she promptly began to pull off of the road, at this point the rear-end locked up, snapped the drive shaft, and a fire broke out beneath the truck. i'm not religious, but thank god the drive shaft broke from the rear end and not the transmission. i think we all know what could have happened then. *nm

Clutch pack retainer clips in 2004 dodge ram 1500. these clips failed in my rear differential leaving large pieces of metal in the housing.the dealership fixed it under warranty but i'm concerned it will happen again.my main worry is that if they fail at highway speeds it could lead to rear end lock up without warning.i belong to a dodge enthusiast group online and about 80% of people who own the 1500 with a limited slip differential have had clip failure, sometimes completely destroying the rear end. i really feel like something needs to be done about this as chrysler has chosen to turn their backs on the problem. *tr

Subj: rear differential failure dear sir or madame, several months ago, i purchased a used 2004 dodge ram 1500 that was out of the warranty period. on dec. 7, 2006 i had my rear differential serviced by an ase certified facility after reading numerous postings on several online forums discussing rear differential failures for this vehicle and after i experienced a loss in general performance of the truck. as suspected and as documented by other owners, the clutch retainer clips of the rear differential fell apart in the differential housing causing the entire rear end to fail. i am in process of having all moving parts in the housing to be rebuilt by a drivetrain specialist and will cost in excess of $1000. i was also told by the technician servicing the vehicle that it is quite possible that this problem if not caught in early stages, can create a catastrophic failure of the rear end eventually leading to lock up. in speeds in excess of 50 miles per hour this can cause vehicle roll overs and total loss of total vehicle. the fact that daimler-chrysler has yet to issue a service bulletin for this issue is aggravating and shows their lack of sympathy for their owners and as well as other drivers on the road. thank you, kenneth mosley . *nm

On all 2002-2005, and maybe 2006, dodge ram 1500s equipped with the 9.25 rear limited slip differential. the retaining clips on the lsd fail and begin grinding a ring into the housing. when enough grinding has occurred the clips can become free destroying the rear differential. in some cases it cans cause the rear differential to lock up. if this occurs at a high rate of speed you can imagine what it would be like to have your rear tires lock up going 75 mph down the freeway. myself and many others have called into dodge to complain about their faulty lsd's. since no one has died i guess they don't care. i know it is cheaper to only fix the ones that get caught within the warranty, then it is to fix every single 9.25 lsd on the road today but it is wrong. i asked the dodge representative on the phone if dodge would cover the differential again if it fails out side of the warranty since it was a known problem on my vehicle and had to be replaced. i was told no. i would have to call in a see if they could do a good will coverage. this is a major issue and it is a wonder, and pure luck, that no one has died from having their rear-end locking up on them doing 75 mph down the freeway. i have pictures of the beginning stages of this problem if you would like to see them. i also know a large number of people who have been stuck with a bill to replace the failed unit themselves only a few thousand miles after the warranty. even if dodge does repair it the same junk lsd goes right back in. this is a very simple problem to identify during scheduled maintenance if the dealerships were told to look and dodge had a better item to replace them with. i hope you can do something before someone does get injured or killed by dodge. *jb

At approximately 10,000 miles our 2004 dodge ram 1500 began pulling hard to the right. at highway speeds, the vehicle will cross 4 lanes of traffic within seconds if the driver is not pulling to the left in order to compensate for the right pull. we have had the vehicle aligned several times by different dealerships as well as at alignment shops, and the issue persists. daimler chrysler claimed the issue was tire related, and we had the tire dealer move tires around repeatedly trying to make the problem go away. we have also replaced tires with no change in the pull. recently, we noticed the pull is far worse when the vehicle has a full tank of gas, which leads me to suspect weight or weight distribution is a factor. we had steering rack and differential failure at approximately 25,000 miles. both were replaced and the problem continues to exist. also, alignment numbers go from within specification to wildly out of specification each time the truck is placed on a rack. this vehicle control issue is 100% repeatable. *jb

Ram 1550 with 19 tires has experience 2 successive rear-end failures. replacement parts include case, bearings and ring/pinion. failures occurred at slow speed. had they occurred at high speed and the differential locked up the vehicle would most likely roll over and injure/kill the occupants. there is anecdotal reports of such failures in internet user groups and elsewhere. i have suffered 2 failures in 2 000 miles (30 000 and 32 000 miles) and i am surprise to seee no action on this topic. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated while driving 25mph, the driveshaft broke without warning and ruptured the fuel tank causing a fire at the rear of the vehicle. no one was injured, but there was extensive damage to the vehicle. the fire department was contacted to extinguish the flames, a report was taken. a manufacturer representative inspected the vehicle and confirmed the source of the fire as the broken driveshaft.
