Went to check air pressure in tires. while unscrewing the plastic valve stem cap on one of the front tires, the metal valve stem sheared off in my hand. the point of shearing was about mid way down the metal valve stem. the shearing occurred circumferentially in a smooth even plane. there is no evidence of mechanical/physical damage to the valve stem from hitting a curb, etc. i did not exert lateral pressure on the stem, i just twisted the plastic cap with my fingers. the stem was on a tire sensor unit with label schrader electronics with apparent part number 8cbffcb4. *tr

Tl-the contact owns a 2009 dodge ram 1500 equipped with a schroder electronics valve stem (n/a) model number cb583ab (n/a). the contact stated that while driving approximately 65 mph, the low tire pressure warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel. the vehicle was maneuvered to the side of the road where the contact noticed the rear driver's side tire was completely deflated. the tire was replaced with a spare tire. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for inspection. the vehicle was then taken to a tire center and the technician stated the aluminum valve stem exhibited a hole with severe corrosion. the valve stems were replaced on three different tires. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vin was not available. the approximate failure mileage was 20,000. pmb
