| The agency opened this investigation based on 30 complaints alleging that the hoods on model year (my) 2000 and 2001 dodge ram pickup trucks flew up and blocked the driver's vision.these vehicles have a primary hood latch and a secondary (backup) hood latch.the secondary latch is designed to secure the hood if the primary hood latch is not properly closed or otherwise malfunctions.in these complaints, the secondary hood latch malfunctioned, apparently due to corrosion, and did not latch.dodge conducted recall 01v-040 in 1999 to address similar problems on model year 1994-1997 dodge ram pickup trucks.the information chrysler provided in response to odi's information request letter indicated that the my 2000 and 2001 vehicles were equipped with secondary hood latches with stainless steel return springs, as opposed to the earlier recalled trucks that had zinc coated carbon steel return springs.the recalled components were susceptible to corrosion-induced failure due to the type of material used, whereas the corrosion failures in the newer models appear to be due to lubrication loss over time (regular application of grease is advised per instructions in the owners' manual). odi's review of chrysler's warranty, complaint, and injury data for the 2000 and 2001 vehicles indicates that the rates for subject vehicles are low and are declining.a potential defect trend has not been identified.this investigation is closed. | ||||||

| I have owned this truck about 3 years. the vehicle has approx. 39,000 miles on it. i noticed small cracks in the dashboard. over the last 3 years, the cracks have gotten larger. i was traveling on interstate 81 and going across a bridge joint. the bridge joint dips down and the shock of the bridge joint caused the dashboard to completely shatter into pieces. these pieces are very sharp and brittle. these pieces flew up onto the seat. during an impact, these pieces could impale a person sitting in either the driver or passenger side. these pieces also fell down into the electrical system on the vehicle. it could impact the air bags or the computer on the vehicle. when i got home, i called dodge to see if there was any vehicle assistance program or recalls. they said there weren't any. i have all the pieces off the dash if someone would like to look at them. i did remove the dash from the vehicle in fear that someone would be hurt by these sharp pieces. i've read many stories about the dashboards on dodge ram trucks. i cannot believe that this is in the best interest of the consumer. from what i've read, the dashes on all dodge rams between 1998 and 2004 have been defective. i can't believe that there has been no recall on these dashes. if you have any questions, please e-mail me or call. | Tl-the contact owns a 2001 dodge ram 2500. while the vehicle was parked and cleaning it she notice the dashboard was cracked severely. she stated as she was cleaning the dashboard it got worst and she got cut on the hand. she stated the cut was minor. the contact stated the dashboard was very brittle. she called the manufacture and was advised to file a formal complaint and someone would call her back. the vehicle has not been repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 92,000 and the current mileage was 93,005. vwb | |||

| We have a 2001 dodge 2500 the dash is falling apart and has become a safety issue for my family. it has been garage kept and only has 68000 miles on it, and even had the plastic cover over the sun visor from the factory. we use this truck in our towing business and some times we haul passenger and some are children who's fingers could be cut due to the sharp edge where the dash is cracked and even one place has fall out now to where a child can put it whole hand down in and there is a lot of electrical wire that could possible cause serious harm. please help i have tried all i can to get something done but no help from dodge. i went ahead and bought a new dash for our truck but having it put in will be my next issue. i think this is a major problem and dodge needs to stand up and fix this problem. after this many complaints someone can be held liable. *tr | |||

| I own a 2001 dodge ram 2500 that i bought new. it has 115,753 miles to this date. the truck is kept under a shed 90% of the time and still looks great on the outside. i recently noticed a crack in the dash bezel and now have large cracks all over the top of the dash. i have read and seen many dodge trucks with this same problem. the cracks turn into large holes with sharp edges. as many complaints as i have seen just on the internet, this has got to be a manufacturing defect. i have only been searching on the computer for less than an hour and have found hundreds of complaints. i know that this is a 7 year old truck, but it has been taken care of. i have had many small problems with my truck since it was new, but nothing that i thought was a widespread problem. i usually just have fixed what is broke, but from what i have read this problem will just come back again. i should not be responsible for repairing something that broke on its on over and over again. if i knew that a new dash would fix the problem, i would not any problem going out and buying one. but many people have done this exact thing and are still in the same situation. dodge needs to be held responsible for their mistakes and fix them. if they came out with a new dash and told me that they would stand behind it, i would go out and buy it. but that is not the case. thank you for your time. *tr | |||

| 2001 dodge ram 2500 cummins diesel dash board cracking and breaking apart. i spent a lot of money on this vehicle for it to start falling apart on its own. it seems to be a widespread problem across the dodge ram cummins arena i have seen it in 17 different dodge rams with the cummins in fayetteville north carolina alone. looking around on the internet for answers to my problem only indicates that this problem is very common in this vehicle equipped with the cummins engine. the only recourse is to buy a stock replacement for about 1,000.00 dollars or buy a cap to cover the old one. *tr | |||

| I have a 2001 dodge ram 2500, and my dash is falling in. my dash started cracking several months ago and has recently started falling to pieces which are being lost inside the dash. when i googled a replacement dash i found countless others who are having the exact same problem. local 6 news out of florida did a story on this problem and even has a report of the falling debris cutting into the wiring causing the headlights to turn off while driving at night. i have not contacted dodge directly. i did go to the dealership and all they offered was to sell me a new dash at appx. $500. when i googled this problem, several of the people who had complained to dodge were given the same form letter telling them in short that this was not a common problem resulting in a recall and that there was nothing that they could do. i am only one of several people across the country who are looking for dodge to correct a problem they have given us that is not only cosmetic. i find it hard to believe this is being overlooked and viewed as cosmetic. there is a safety issue of broken pieces of dash board falling in and cutting wires, exposed jagged edges of plastic, brittle plastic parts flying around in the cab of the truck during the event of an accident, and also pieces being propelled at the driver and all passengers in the event of an air bag deployment. we are looking for dodge to rectify this problem and admit that there is an issue with them purchasing sub-par materials. *tr | |||
