2004 dodge 2500 truck. consumer states problem with lift pump *tgw the consumer was informed by a mechanic that the lift pumps fail with 50,000-60,000 miles because they were mounted on the port side of the engine by the fuel filter by the heat motor. when the pump failed, the engine had no way to get fuel up from the fuel tank. the consumer stated the vehicle had to be towed. *jb

 Fuel lift pump failure
07/01/201054008
While exiting a highway off ramp at highway speeds (60-65mph) truck died with no warning or alarms in a curve. i lost all power steering and most braking. as i approached near edge of embankment with no steering or rapid braking, i was able to refire motor for about 5 seconds which gave me power steering back and i was able to avert going off of a steep embankment, and avoided accident. after towing to local dealership it was determined that my fuel lift pump had failed. dodge has been aware of these problems for sometime with these trucks. repair was over 700 dollars. truck had around 54k miles.

There was no symptoms that there was going to be a failure. fuel lift pump stopped working and truck cut off while going 55mph leaving a 6000lb truck with no power steering or power brakes. happened with 62326 miles on truck. had this pump failed 30 seconds later my truck would have been going through a red light because i would not have been able to stop. dodge and cummins do not supply a pump in this location for 2003-2004 dodge ram trucks anymore. when they did supply it was approximately $350.00, they have retrofitted a new pump in the fuel tank that cost $1000.00. there are many complaints on diesel truck forums about the same problem with this truck. dodge will not put old factory style fuel pump on these trucks anymore for a reason. *tr

I own a 2004 dodge 2500 with cummins engine and it stalled and would not restart. dealership said the diesel fuel transfer pump went bad which they said was a very common problem. service department said it was a design flaw and have to put a kit on it to fix the problem (totally relocate the fuel transfer pump from the engine to the fuel tank). also said it was a possibility that it ruined the injector pump because it was not receiving fuel from the transfer pump. this is a very common problem and service departments admit it and is widely documented on the internet, why has a recall not been issued.*jb

Dt*: the contact stated while the vehicle is parked on an incline and there is less than one third tank of fuel, the vehicle will not restart. the dealership determined this was how the vehicle was manufactured.

I own a 2004.5 dodge cummins diesel. at 7000 miles the truck burned up 6 fuel injectors. dodge claimed it was contaminated fuel. i only buy fuel in one place so i had az dept. of weights and measures check the station. their fuel was fine. i later ($5000.00 dollars later)found that the top of the fuel tank has a recess that fills with water and has an air inlet that is lower that the water line. when driving in the rain the fuel tank will pull water in as fast as you burn fuel which in turn will burn up the injectors. dodge knows about this problem and lies to customers about the fuel being contaminated. this is costing hundreds of truck owners thousands of dollars! dodge needs to take responsibility for this problem. the sad part is that .25 cents of rubber hose will fix the problem. any help would be greatly appreciated. *jb

Tl-the contact owns a 2004 dodge ram 2500. the contact stated that while driving approximately 65 mph the vehicle suddenly stalled when trying to exit. the emissions warning light illuminated on the instrumental panel after the stall. the vehicle was unable to restart and they had it towed to a dealer. the dealer inspected the vehicle and informed the contact that they needed to replace the circuit in the fuel pump. the vehicle was repaired for the circuit in the fuel pump. the failure mileage was 38,000. tb

Problems with transmission on 2004 dodge truck. *mr there were cooling line concerns as well. the consumer was concerned with the fuel odor and when the vehicle was placed in park, it felt as if it did not lock into place. on one occasion, the consumer parked the vehicle, went into a store, and the vehicle jumped out of park into reverse, and hit a dump truck. *sc *jb see also 10121524. *dsy

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 dodge ram 2500 quad st/slt. the contact stated that the front end of the vehicle shakes violently while driving approximately 70 mph. he took the vehicle to the dealer and they replaced the front stabilizer rod at the cost of $1,000. the failure recurred and the vehicle was taken back to the dealer. the dealer stated that the tires needed to be replaced. the failure mileage was 109,500 and current mileage was 109,900. updated 10/06/09. *lj the consumer stated the tires were worn out on the outside only. even when the vehicle had an alignment and the tires rotated the problem still remained the same. the fuel pump module was replaced. updated 10/09/09.*jb

The fuel pump on my dodge diesel failed on me while driving with my wife and 2 month old daughter during one of the worst snow/ice storms of the season. we were in rural central missouri about 7 miles from the nearest town. fortunately we were in an area where we had cell phone service and were able to call a friend to come and get us. what makes me furious is that i later found out this type of malfunction is very common and dodge has actually discontinued the original under hood fuel pump because of it's poor history and i had to pay almost $900 to have an in tank fuel pump installed. i feel this should be a recall item because i don't feel i should have to pay for their poor engineering. *tr

While driving on freeway engine stalled immediately without warning due to failure of the fuel lift pump. had to purchase a dealer manufactured retrofit kit, which included a newly designed fuel lift pump and wiring harness. *ak

2004 dodge ram 2500 diesel pickup all six injectors have went out twice and chrysler has refused t do anything about it. the first time they went out the pickup naturally died and the power steering went out at 75 mph on a curve in north dakota causing a near accident . as a result when the injectors went out it filled my crankcase with fuel which poses a possible explosion factor. chryser blamed it on my chip but it happened again with out the chip leading me to believe there is an obvious design flaw that could lead to the possible death of the operator. *jb

I have a 2004 dodge ram cummins turbo diesel truck. around aug 14 2006 i had a fuel injector fail. the result is a crankcase full of fuel which exits the engine out of the overflow at the rear of the engine, this in turn causes fuel to cover the rear of the engine and underside of the truck. again last weekend sept 17th i had another failure. i believe that the combination of fuel and hot exhaust is a fire waiting to happen. the dealer other than a warranty repair denies that there is a problem but on various web sites i keep hearing about others having the same problem. i think this is a time bomb waiting to happen that could kill or severely hurt someone from a resulting fire. *nm
